JAN. 1, 1912 -- SEPT. 21, 2004

ORANGE CITY -- Mary Francis Kidd Hipp, 92, of Veteran's Memorial Parkway, who worked in various Jacksonville dress shops before her retirement, died Tuesday at Majestic Oaks.

Mrs. Hipp was born in Newnan, Ga., and came here in 1992 from Jacksonville. She was a member of Avondale United Methodist Church, Jacksonville, Orange City United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women's Club and the Jacksonville Garden Club.

Survivors include a son, Charles, Green Cove Springs; a daughter, Margie Piacentine, Lake Mary; and four grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Florida Methodist Children's Home, 51 Main Street, Enterprise, FL 32725. Allen-Summerhill, DeLand, is in charge.

Betty Hobson

AUG. 30, 1930 -- SEPT. 21, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- Betty Jean Hobson, 74, of Flagstone Drive, a native of Hamilton, Ohio, died Tuesday at Hospice Care Center, Port Orange.

Mrs. Hobson, a homemaker, moved here in 2001 from London, Ky. She enjoyed flowers, animals and breeding dogs.

Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Homer; two sons, Keith Hobson, Daytona Beach, and Danny Croucher, London; five daughters, Kathy Baker, Daytona Beach, Gail Soles, Andrews, S.C., Brenda Croucher, Franklin, Ohio, Ella Chavis, Hamilton, and Karla Britton, London; three sisters, Nancy Boggs, Wilmore, Ky., Shirley Ladington, Hamilton, and Sue Fox, Ocala; 19 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Newlife Cremation, Ormond Beach, is in charge.

Sofie Kusmider

DEC. 19, 1912 -- SEPT. 19, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- Sofie L. Kusmider, 91, of Cornell Drive, a native of Krakow, Poland, died Sunday at Florida Hospital-Ormond Memorial.

Mrs. Kusmider, a dishwasher before her retirement, moved here in 2003 from Minneapolis. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and its Rosary Committee and the Polish National Association Local 17, all of Minneapolis. She enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Bill; two sons, John, Daytona Beach, and Kasmier, Loganville, Ga.; a daughter, Mary King, Daytona Beach; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the Polish National Association, 6100 Cerio Ave., Chicago, IL 60619. Lohman-Ormond, Ormond Beach, is in charge.

Alfred Nigro

OCT. 16, 1920 -- SEPT. 22, 2004

PALM COAST -- Alfred L. Nigro, 83, of Winterling Place, a retired carpenter, died Wednesday at Grand Oaks Health & Rehabilitation.

Mr. Nigro, a Navy veteran of World War II, moved to this area in 1991 from Glen Cove, N.Y., his birthplace. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, The New York Club and was a lifetime member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed golf, woodworking and travel.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth; a son, Alan, Ronkonkoma, N.Y.; a daughter, Elaine Foster, Jacksonville; two sisters, Ann Jones, Port Orange, and Adeline Shay, Glen Cove; and six grandchildren. Craig-Flagler Palms, Flagler Beach, is in charge.

Caren O'Steen

OCT. 1, 1960 -- SEPT. 17, 2004

FORT PIERCE -- Caren Joyce O'Steen, 43, of Imperial Way, a former resident of New Smyrna Beach, died Friday at Indian River Memorial Hospital, Vero Beach.

Mrs. O'Steen was an assistant director for Lakewood Park Childcare Center, Fort Pierce, for 15 years. She was born in Far Rockaway, N.Y., and was a member of Black Knights Karate Association where she was a 4th Degree Black Belt.

Survivors include two sons, Jeremiah Cordaro, Florida, and Isreal Cordaro, Fort Pierce; two daughters, Rebecca Cordaro, Port St. Lucie, and Jerusha Cordaro, Fort Pierce; her mother, Jean Clemens, Fort Pierce; four brothers, Timothy Jackowski, Fort Pierce, Lance Clemmons, Tennessee, and Scott Jackowski and Ronald Jackowski Jr., both of Bayshore, N.Y.; four sisters, Keri Padonti and Tara Lambert, both of Port St. Lucie, Kimberly Boratrli, Massachusetts, and Denise Jackowski, Bayshore; and two grandchildren. Aycock Funeral Home, Fort Pierce, is in charge.

Lillian Porter

MARCH 26, 1914 -- SEPT. 21, 2004

PALM COAST -- Lillian Marie Porter, 90, a resident since 1998, died Tuesday at Magnolia Manor.

Born in New Rochelle, N.Y., Mrs. Porter, a homemaker, moved here from Hampton Bay, N.Y. She was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and enjoyed reading.

Survivors include a son, Shaun, Palm Coast; a sister, Sister Rosalie Kaley, Mount St. Vincent, N.Y.; a grandchild; and two great-grandchildren. Minnie Smith

OCT. 1, 1926 -- SEPT. 18, 2004

EDGEWATER -- Minnie D. Smith, 77, of South Ridgewood Avenue, a resident since 1961, died Saturday at Saint Catharines General Hospital, Ontario.

Mrs. Smith was born in Stoke-On-Trent, England, and moved to this area from Toronto, where she resided during the summer. She enjoyed crocheting.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Norman; two sons, Daniel, South Daytona, J.D., New Smyrna Beach; two brothers, Tom and George Darlington, both of Canada; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Felicia Villoch

AUG. 29, 1984 -- SEPT. 18, 2004

ORANGE CITY -- Felicia Marie Villoch, 20, of Joe Street, a native of Miami, died Saturday at Central Florida Regional Hospital, Sanford. An autopsy is pending.

Miss Villoch, a caterer, moved here in 1993 from her birthplace. She was a member of Water of Life Fellowship, Deltona, and enjoyed cooking, dancing, singing and the beach.

Survivors include her father, Jose, Astor; her mother, Gayle Villoch, Orange City; and two sisters, Annie Scheffler, Orange City, and Christina Kumpf, Deltona. Pinello, Daytona Beach, is in charge.

Robert Abbott

APRIL 1, 1936 -- OCT. 8, 2004

ORMOND BEACH -- Robert E. "Bob" Abbott, 68, who worked for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority in Boston before he retired, died Friday at home.

A native of Boston, Mr. Abbott moved here in 2000 from Billerica, Mass. He enjoyed sports.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Carol; four sons, Robert Jr., Arlington, Mass., Scott, Billerica, and Christopher and Jason, both of Hudson, N.C.; a daughter, Donna Bernard, Pepperell, Mass.; a brother, Richard, Medford, Mass.; two sisters, Linda Jenkins, Uxbridge, Mass., and Virginia Abbott, Plymouth, Mass.; and eight grandchildren. Julia Bernhardy

JUNE 11, 1915 -- OCT. 7, 2004

EDGEWATER -- Julia Bernhardy, 89, of Kumquat Drive, a resident since 1989, died Thursday at South Georgia Medical Center, Valdosta, Ga.

Mrs. Bernhardy, a homemaker, was born in Gibsonia, Pa., and moved here from Pittsburgh. She enjoyed embroidery, sewing, cats and going to the beach.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Fortney, Edgewater; and three sisters, Louise Bendure, Conneaut, Ohio, Betty Logan, New Kensington, Pa., and Mary McDonald, Kingman, Ariz. Settle-Wilder, New Smyrna Beach, is in charge.

Charles Carpenter

JAN. 28, 1934 -- OCT. 6, 2004

OTTO, N.C. -- Charles Ray Carpenter, 70, of Otto, a former resident of DeBary, died Wednesday at home.

Mr. Carpenter, an Air Force veteran, was born in Oberlin, La., and moved to DeBary in the 1960s. He moved to North Carolina in 1990. Mr. Carpenter worked for Florida Power & Light for 26 years before he retired.

Survivors include his wife, Geneva; a son, Earnest "Jody" Rankin; two daughters, Janice Davis, Otto, and Charlotte Sumner, Oxford, Fla.; two stepsons, Glen Castle, Otto, and Ronnie Castle, Franklin, N.C. two stepdaughters, Shirley Crone, Otto, and Renay Knapp, Horseshoe, N.C.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. PALM COAST -- Sally Daily, 87, of Rosecroft Lane, a native of Spotsylvania, Va., died Saturday at Florida Hospital-Flagler.

Mrs. Daily, a homemaker, moved here in 1989 from Bowie, Md. She was a charter member of Palm Coast United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed volunteering at the church, baking and travel.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Ralph; two daughters, Joan Bell, Springfield, Va., and Sue Loveless, Williamsburg, Va.; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. ORMOND BEACH -- Marjorie G. Haney, 86, owner of Marjorie Haney Child Nursery before her retirement, died Monday at Bridgeview Nursing Home.

Mrs. Haney was born in Ames, Iowa, and moved here in 1964 from Melbourne. She enjoyed singing in the church choir.

Survivors include a son, Neil, Daytona Beach; a brother, Paul Wickham, Melbourne; a sister, Charlotte Miller, Deltona; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
