Jose Henao

MAY 29, 1963 -- FEB. 28, 2005

PALM COAST -- Jose Y. Henao, 41, of Whittlesey Lane, a manager in the food service industry, died Monday at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach, from injuries sustained in an accident in Bunnell.

Born in Pereira, Columbia, Mr. Henao moved here in 2003 from Queens, N.Y. He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Daytona Beach. He enjoyed dancing, football, music and soccer.

Survivors include his wife, Amparo; a son, Jonathan, and a daughter, Stephanie Henao, both of Palm Coast; his father, Anibal Henao, Colombia; his mother, Maria Melendes, West Palm Beach; two brothers, Jose, West Palm Beach, and Hernando, New Jersey; and two sisters, Mary Henao and Martha Melendez, both of West Palm Beach. Pinello, Daytona Beach, is in charge.

Jewell Hobby

AUG. 9, 1908 -- FEB. 28, 2005

SOUTH DAYTONA -- Jewell W. Hobby, 96, of Granada Drive, a retired accountant, died Monday at home.

Mrs. Hobby was born in Ochlocknee, Ga., and moved here in 1967 from the Panama Canal Zone. She was a longtime volunteer with the Red Cross and enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include a brother, Roland Waldron, Cairo, Ga.; and a sister, Arlene Musselwhite, Jacksonville. Cardwell & Maloney, Port Orange, is in charge.

Ernest Huber

SEPT. 6, 1931 -- FEB. 27, 2005

DELAND -- Ernest F. Huber, 73, of Eagle Pass, a self-employed machinist, died Sunday at Florida Hospital DeLand.

Mr. Huber, an Air Force veteran of the Korean War, was born in Cape Cod, Mass. He moved to this area in 1999 from Crescent City. He was a member of the DeLand Church of the Nazarene and the Stetson Baptist Church of DeLand.

Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Mary; a son, Scott, Beverly, Mass.; two daughters, Kathleen McMan, Georgetown, Mass., and Donna Strandberg, Tewksbury, Mass.; three brothers, Robert, Merritt Island, Kyle, Cocoa Beach, and David, New Hampshire; two sisters, Virginia Jenkins, Beverly, and Janice Sedlar, Wolfeboro, N.H.; and 13 grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 555 W. Granada Blvd., Suite A-1, Ormond Beach, FL 32174; or to the American Cancer Society, 1620 S. Clyde Morris Blvd., Suite 300, Daytona Beach, FL 32119. Coastal Cremation, Palm Coast, is in charge.

Curtis Hutchings

NOV. 13, 1911 -- FEB. 25, 2005

DELAND -- Curtis H. Hutchings, 93, of Armstrong Avenue, a retired Navy rear admiral, died Friday at Alliance Community Center for Health Care.

Born in Madill, Okla., Mr. Hutchings graduated from DeLand High School in 1929. Also a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, he served in the Pacific and European theaters during World War II and was in charge of detecting any German U-boats entering the Mediterranean Sea. Mr. Hutchings also developed star tables for air navigation in 1946 which are still taught today. After his retirement in 1959, he returned to the area and earned a mathematics degree from Stetson University, where he also taught. Mr. Hutchings also was a teacher at the Naval Academy and Daytona Beach Community College. He was a member of First Baptist Church and Lake Beresford Yacht Club.

Survivors include his wife, Betty; a grandchild; and two great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Boy Scout Troop 725, co First Baptist Church, 725 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand, FL 32724; or to the First Baptist Church, 725 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand, FL 32724. Allen-Summerhill, DeLand, is in charge.

Leola Kempski

APRIL 19, 1923 -- FEB. 28, 2005

SOUTH DAYTONA -- Leola Mae Kempski, 81, of Colfax Avenue, a native of Cleveland, died Monday at home.

Mrs. Kempski, a homemaker, moved here in 1970 from Auburn Corners, Ohio. She enjoyed sewing and gardening.

Survivors include a son, Les, South Daytona; two daughters, Lisa Welch, Port Orange, and Linda Kempski, South Daytona; a sister, Carmel Affeldt, Auburn Corners; and seven grandchildren. Volusia County Cremation, Daytona Beach, is in charge.

Anthony Klar

FEB. 13, 1928 -- FEB. 28, 2005

DEBARY -- Anthony R. "Tony" Klar, 77, of Chateau Circle, a steel roller who retired after 23 years with LTV Steel Co. in Cleveland, died Monday at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial, Orange City.

Mr. Klar, a Navy communications officer and veteran of World War II, moved here from his native Cleveland in 1990. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8093 and attended St. Ann Catholic Church.

Survivors include his companion, Frances Alioto, Orange City. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 555 W. Granada Blvd., Suite A-1, Ormond Beach, FL 32174. Tri-County Cremation, Longwood, is in charge.

Peter Klein

JUNE 5, 1915 -- FEB. 27, 2005

DAYTONA BEACH -- Peter L. Klein, 89, of Mason Park Drive, a retired carpenter, died Sunday at Manor on the Green.

Mr. Klein was born in New Brunswick, N.J., and moved to this area in 1956 from New Jersey. He was a member of the Carpenters and Lathers Union Local 184.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Sally; a daughter, Sally Wells, Luray, Va.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Volusia County Cremation is in charge.

Grace Magarino

AUG. 1, 1904 -- FEB. 28, 2005

ORMOND BEACH -- Grace Magarino, 100, of North Center Street, a native of Forest Hills, N.Y., died Monday at Coquina Center.

Survivors include her caregivers, Judith Garthaffner, Huntington, N.Y., and Kathleen Vance, Mulga, Ala. Memorial donations may be made to the Council on Aging, P.O. Box 671, Daytona Beach, FL 32115. Volusia County Cremation, Daytona Beach, is in charge.

Lucila Olivares

JULY 8, 1923 -- FEB. 28, 2005

DELTONA -- Lucila Olivares, 81, of Old Mill Road, a native of Ponce, Puerto Rico, died Monday at home.

A homemaker, Ms. Olivares moved here in 1997 from Brooklyn, N.Y. She was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Community and enjoyed soap operas.

Survivors include a daughter, Lourdes Cruz; a grandchild; and two great-grandchildren. Deltona Memorial, Orange City, is in charge.

Helen O'Roarke

JAN. 13, 1911 -- FEB. 28, 2005

HOLLY HILL -- Helen B. O'Roarke, 94, of Walker Street, who retired in 1976 as a teller for State Bank of Albany, died Monday at Daytona Beach Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. O'Roarke was born in West Eaton, N.Y., and moved here in 1977 from Albany, N.Y. She also worked as an elementary school teacher in New York for nine years in the 1930s. Mrs. O'Roarke attended Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, Port Orange. She enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include a brother, Arnold Smith, New York; and a niece, Jean Campbell, Holly Hill, who provided for her care. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Cardwell & Maloney, Port Orange, is in charge.

Annie Pryor

JULY 5, 1921 -- FEB. 28, 2005

ORMOND BEACH -- Annie B. Pryor, 83, of Hopkins Avenue, a resident since 1994, died Monday at the Bridgeview Center.

Mrs. Pryor, a former custodian, was born in Palmieri, S.C., and moved to this area from Detroit. She was a member of Morning Star Baptist Church, Daytona Beach.

Survivors include two sons, Vernon Suber, Daytona Beach, and Faheeme Suber, Detroit; a daughter, Mary Neal, Ormond Beach; 23 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 111 N. Frederick Ave., Suite 100, Daytona Beach, FL 32114. Lohman Daytona is in charge.

Elvia Sarasty

JULY 24, 1919 -- FEB. 28, 2005

DELTONA -- Elvia Marie Sarasty, 85, of Fifer Drive, a native of Colombia, died Monday at home.

Mrs. Sarasty, a homemaker, moved here in 2003 from Staten Island, N.Y.

Survivors include a son, Carlos Velez, Columbia; two daughters, Yolanda Iza, Deltona, and Fabiola Acevedo, Staten Island; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Baldauff, Orange City, is in charge.

Felix Shiffman

JULY 9, 1925 -- MARCH 1, 2005

ORMOND BEACH -- Felix Shiffman, 79, of Green Forest Drive, a cosmetic surgeon in New York City for 40 years before his retirement, died Tuesday at home.

Dr. Shiffman moved to this area in 2001 from New York City, his birthplace. He was an avid art enthusiast and bridge player and also enjoyed scuba diving.

Survivors include his wife of 18 years, Lillian; a son, Dan, Seattle; a daughter, Orit, Zarrillo, New York City; a stepson, Charles Facciponti, Ormond Beach; three stepdaughters, Mary Jane Facciponti and Joanne Sorenson, both of Ormond Beach, and Susan Wirzman, New Jersey; and four grandchildren. Lohman-Ormond is in charge.

Grace Shoff

MARCH 2, 1916 -- MARCH 1, 2005

DELAND -- Grace W. Shoff, 88, of Chipola Avenue, a retired Pennsylvania school teacher, died Tuesday at Woodland Terrace Extended Care.

Mrs. Shoff was born in Beccaria, Pa., and moved from Madera, Pa., to Deltona in 1989, and relocated to DeLand in 2000. She and her late husband formerly owned the Shoff Funeral Home in Madera. Mrs. Shoff was a member of First United Methodist Church, Deltona, United Methodist Women and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Women's Auxiliary. She enjoyed macrame, sewing and reading.

Survivors include a son, Thomas, Williamsport, Pa.; and four grandchildren. Deltona Memorial, Orange City, is in charge.
