Elsa R. Arroyo

Elsa R. Arroyo, 63, of Davenport, died of heart failure Wednesday, April 6, 2005.
She was a native of Puerto Rico who came to the area from Perth Amboy, N.J., eight years ago. She was a homemaker. She was of the Catholic faith.

She is survived by her son, Edward Arroyo of Davenport.

Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Oak Ridge Funeral Care in Haines City.

Grady Strickland

Grady Strickland, 78, of Haines City, died of heart failure on Sunday, April 10, 2005, in Davenport.
He was a native of Elba, Ala., who came to the area from Opp, Ala., in 1939. He was a house foreman for Haines City Citrus Growers Association. He was a World War Ii veteran serving in the U.S. Army in the Philippines and Japan.

He is survived by his wife, Juanita (Ferrell) Strickland of Haines City; a daughter, Elaina (Strickland) Bringle of Lake Hamilton; a son, Edward Strickland of Cincinnati, Ohio; a brother, Eddie Stricklen of Haines City; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Oak Ridge Funeral Care in Haines City. Funeral services will be on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

Bruce J. Callin

Bruce J. Callin, 74, of Haines City, died of lung cancer on Monday, April 11, 2005.
He was a native of St. Augustine, who came to the area from Jacksonville in 1972. He was a plant manager for General Die and Manufacturing Corp. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict. He was a member of Cypress Gardens Sertoma Club and the Central Florida Air & Power Boat Association.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Callin of Haines City; a son, Brett Callin of Auburndale; two daughters, Vicki Hart of Lake Wales and Karen Hines of Dundee; a brother, Blocker Callin of LaBelle; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Oak Ridge Funeral Care in Haines City.

Memorial donations may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice, 105 Arneson Ave., Auburndale, FL 33823.

Joseph "Anka" Downs,

Joseph "Anka" Downs, 90, of Haines City, died of heart failure on Saturday, April 9, 2005.
He was a native of Rochester, N.Y., who came to the area from Pembroke Pines in 2002. He was a certified public accountant. He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp from 1941 to 1945 where he received seven promotions within a 13 month period.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Downs.

He is survived by three daughters, Linda Jo (Downs) Matthews of Haines City, Maureen Shank of Pembroke Pines, and Karen Reyes of Pembroke Pines; and six grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Oak Ridge Funeral Care in Haines City. Funeral services will be on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church.

Joseph Hyjek

Joseph Hyjek, 75, of Haines City, died of cancer on Monday, April 11, 2005.
He was a native of West Rutland, Vt., who came to the area from Ludlow, Vt., two years ago. He was a machinist for 25 years at Cone-Blanchard Machine Co. He was of the Catholic faith. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Hyjek and a brother, Peter Hyjek.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Patrecia Hyjek of Haines City; three sons, Eugene Hyjek of Ludlow, Vt., Mark Hyjek of Belmont, Vt., and Thomas Hyjek of Mount Holly, Vt.; a daughter, Laura Wyman of Ludlow, Vt.; two brothers, Walter Hyjek of Shaftberry, Vt., and Jacob Hyjek of Rutland, Vt.; a sister, Rose McLaughlin of Proctor, Vt.; and 12 grandchildren.

Services will be held at a later date in Ludlow.

Ralph A. Derosier

Ralph A. Derosier, 77, of Haines City, died of heart failure on Monday, April 11, 2005.
He was a native of Detroit, who came to the area from Leominster, Mass., in 2001. He was the comptroller for E.B. Kingman Co. of Leominster. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a former member of Knights of Columbus in Leominster. He played piano in a band for 30 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Derosier.

He is survived by a daughter, Connie (Derosier) Carter of Davenport; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 9 a.m. at St. Ann's Catholic Church.

Memorial donations may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice, 105 Arneson Ave., Auburndale, FL 33823.

Jesse James Sands Sr.

Jesse James Sands Sr., 81, of Haines City, died of heart failure Friday, May 31, 2002, in Davenport.

A native of Glennville, Ga., he moved to Haines City in 1940. He was a plasterer for Lawrence Garrett. He was a World War II Army veteran, serving with the 187th Ordinance Depot Co. in Normandy, Northern France, Rhine-land, and in the Tank Corps in Central Europe.

He was preceded in death by a son, Gerald Sands.

He is survived by a son, Jesse J. Sands Jr., of Lake Wales; a daughter, Jill E. Sands of Lake Wales; a sister, Redetha Williams of Jacksonville; and one granddaughter.

Graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at Forest Hill Cemetery in Haines City.

Shirley H. Sinopoli

Shirley H. Sinopoli, 79, of Haines City, died of heart failure on Wednesday, May 28, 2003, in Davenport.

She was a native of Haverstraw, N.Y., who moved to the area from Stony Point, N.Y., 11 years ago. She was a homemaker. She was Catholic by faith.

She was preceded in death by a son, Walter Schultz.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph A. Sinopoli of Haines City; four sisters, Jane Brigandi, Edith Cloer, Mary Frank and Rose Jaffee, all of New York; a brother, Jack Reilly of North Carolina; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Sunday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Oak Ridge Funeral Care in Haines City. Funeral services will be on Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church in Haines City.

Jared Earl Wade

Jared Earl Wade, 20, of Haines City, died Saturday, May 31, 2003, from injuries sustained when he was struck by an automobile while walking along U.S. Highway 27 in Lake Hamilton.

A native of Columbus, Ga., he moved to the Haines City in 1987 from Columbus. He worked as a chef at Walt Disney World for the last three years. He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his mother, Wanda Marie McCarty, and step-father, Anthony Babula, both of Haines City; a sister, Gabrielle Swift, of Lakeland, a stepbrother, Kurt Babula, of Haines City; and four uncles, an aunt and several cousins.

Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Rolling Hills Cemetery in Winter Haven.

Richard Warren Hansen

Richard Warren Hansen, 82, of Auburndale, died of heart failure on Saturday, May 31, 2003.

A native of Stockton, Iowa, he came to the Auburndale area 10 years ago from Bettendorf, Iowa. He was a 50-year member of the American Legion in Dixon, Iowa. He was the past volunteer fire chief in Maysville, Iowa. He was a member of Abiding Savior Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Nelda Alberta Hansen, of Auburndale; a son, Dennis Hansen and daughter-in-law, Sharon Hansen, of Ankeny, Iowa; a brother, Robert Hansen, of Clearwater; a grandson, Eric Hansen, of Des Moines, Iowa, and a granddaughter, Erin Witcofski, of Omaha, Neb.

A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Abiding Savior Lutheran Church.

Memorial donations may be made to the Maysville Volunteer Fire Department, c/o Scott Roenseldt, 7450 New Liberty Road, Walcott, Iowa 53773 or Abiding Savior Lutheran Church.
