Edward Charles Coletta

Jacksonville Beach

Edward Charles Coletta, 57, of Jacksonville Beach, died May 24, 2003. He grew up in St. Johns, Mich., and received degrees from Michigan State University and Ohio University and an MBA from Ball State University. He spent his career working in the glass container industry in sales and manufacturing. For the past three years, he had worked in Jacksonville for Saint-Gobain Containers Corp. with the Bacardi Bottling Corp.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Barbara Dean Coletta; sons Brant (Karen) of New York City and Spencer of Madison, Wis.; his parents, Charles and Velma Coletta of St. Johns; brother Richard (Kathy) of St. Johns, and three nephews.

Honoring his request, there will be no service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. Quinn-Shalz, A Family Funeral Home, Jacksonville Beach.

Harold Lee Craft

Service is Friday

Harold Lee Craft, 70, of Atlantic Beach, died Monday, May 26, 2003. Born April 6, 1933, in Carrollton, Ga., he moved to the Jacksonville area from Atlanta in 1959. He was graduated from Robert E. Lee High School, Thomaston, Ga., received a BS in business administration from Georgia State University and served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was a member of the Arlington United Methodist Church and retired as senior vice president from First Union in 1996.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, JoAnne Craft; daughter, Allison (David) Proehl of Atlantic Beach; sister, Mrs. W. B. Price of Douglasville, Ga., and grandchildren Zachary Proehl and Emily Proehl of Atlantic Beach.

Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 29, in the chapel of Quinn-Shalz, A Family Funeral Home, Jacksonville Beach, with a memorial service in the chapel at 10 a.m., Friday, followed by inurnment in Beaches Memorial Park.

Jane A. Kimmel

Ponte Vedra Beach

Jane A. Kimmel, 82, a four-year resident of Ponte Vedra Beach, died on Sunday, April 27, 2003, after a two-month illness. She was a member of Palms Presbyterian Church, Jacksonville Beach. Her husband, Richard, preceded her in death.

She is survived by her son, Richard E. of Orlando; her daughter, Kathleen Roman of Libertyville, Ill., sister Sally Francisco of Ponte Vedra Beach, and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in Chicago at a date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the University of Wisconsin Cancer Research Center in Madison , Wis.. Quinn-Shalz, A Family Funeral Home, Jacksonville Beach.

Robert Wesley 'Wes' Massengill

Service is today

Robert Wesley "Wes" Massengill, 62, of Jacksonville Beach, died at home on Saturday, May 24, 2003, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born Sept. 19, 1940, in Birmingham, Ala., he moved to Jacksonville Beach from Raleigh, N.C., in 1989. He received mechanical and industrial engineering degrees from Auburn University and New York State University. He served in the Air Force, was president of the NE Florida Antique Arms Collectors, a member of Beaches Railroad Society, PIMA, the Jacksonville Beach Planning Commission and the Beaches Lions Club. He retired from Weavexx Corp. after 31 years.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Nancy Hankins Massengill; daughters Cynthia (Russ) Garrett and Wendy Vincent of Birmingham; mother Christine Bryant Massengill of Jacksonville, and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today, May 28, in Beaches Chapel Church, 610 Florida Blvd.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Quinn-Shalz, A Family Funeral Home, Jacksonville Beach.

Emil 'Joe' Merkel

Service is Thursday

Emil "Joe" Merkel, 95, of Jacksonville Beach died Monday, May 26, 2003. He was a self-taught carpenter and boat builder and built his own home at the age of 75. He also built the first glass-bottom boat for Silver Springs.

He is survived by a son, Robert (Barbara) Merkel of Ponte Vedra Beach; a brother, James (Helen) Merkel of Jacksonville; grandchildren Debbie Hudson, Randy Merkel, Rick Merkel, Johnny Merkel and Chad Merkel, and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, May 28, at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 1701 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville Beach. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday in the chapel at the funeral home. Interment will follow at H. Warren Smith Cemetery, Jacksonville Beach. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society

Donald L. Moore

Fleet Landing resident

Donald L. Moore, 81, died Friday, May 23, 2003, after a brief illness. A resident of Fleet Landing, Atlantic Beach, at the time of his death, he had been a longtime resident of Alexandria, Va., and was a native of Massachusetts.

He was graduated in 1943 from Williams College. Following a 23-year career as Navy officer in various financial assignments, he returned to the service for another 18 years in a senior civilian capacity as budget officer and financial manager for the Navy's funds for fleet maintenance and logistics support. He was involved in numerous local civic and church affairs.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, the former Elizabeth Glasson; sons Donald Jr. and John Moore of Northern Virginia; daughter Victoria Nielson of Savannah, Ga.; sister Jean Husher of Newton Mass.; brother David Moore of East Windsor, N.J., and grandchildren, Heather, Hilary, Lauren and Melissa Moore and Jessica and Erica Nielson.

Funeral services will be held at a later date at graveside in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., with interment to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a favorite charity.

William J. O'Connor

Service is today

William J. O'Connor died on Sunday, May 25, at St. Luke's Hospital, Jacksonville, after suffering a heart attack the previous day. Born in Cincinnati in 1919, he was a graduate of Elder High School and served in the Navy during World War II aboard the aircraft carrier USS Randolph, where he saw considerable action in the Pacific Theater.

Following his discharge, he returned to Cincinnati and began a 37-year career with Johnson & Johnson, during which he lived in Denver, Minneapolis, Atlanta and Convent Station, N.J., where he became director of national accounts at Johnson & Johnson's headquarters in New Brunswick, N.J.

Following his retirement in 1983, he moved to Ponte Vedra Beach, where he pursued his avid interest in golf, lowering his handicap to single digits and frequently shooting his age or better. He also volunteered as a driver with the American Cancer Society.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Edna; children Peggy Kirk of Boston, William II of Billings, Mont., Karen Newman of McLean, Va., Susan McKay of Stamford, Conn., and Timothy of Branchburg, N.J., and grandchildren Nathaniel Kirk, Garrett Kirk, Anne Kirk, Brendan O'Connor, Shannon O'Connor, Quinlin O'Connor, Colin Newman, Patrick Newman, Michael McKay Jr., Caroline McKay, William McKay and Meaghan O'Connor.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, May 28, at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, Ponte Vedra Beach. A funeral mass will be held at a later date in Southgate, Ky.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Franciscan Mission Association, 322 West St., Carey, Ohio, 43316-1415, or to Palmer Catholic Academy, 4889 Palm Valley Road, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., 32082. Quinn-Shalz, A Family Funeral Home, Jacksonville Beach.

Patricia Moore Butler

Service is Thursday

Patricia Moore Butler, 59, died in her home in Atlantic Beach on Saturday, March 29, 2003. She was born on Jan. 9, 1944, in Cincinnati, Ohio.

She is survived by her husband, Clyde J. Butler; children, S. Todd (Amy) Smith and Melanie Miller of Jacksonville Beach; step-sons, Bradley (Claudia) Butler of Lynchburg, Va., Matthew (Diane) Butler of Orlando and Christopher (Alatia) Butler of Birmingham, Ala.; her mother, Frances Moore; brothers Lee (Geraldine) Moore of Lake City, Fla., John (Linda) Moore of Longwood, Fla., and Kenneth (Carolyn) Moore of Gainesville, Fla., and 12 grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 3, at Community Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Gabe Goodman officiating. Private family interment was held at Beaches Memorial Park.

Donna Maxine Butterfield

Donna Maxine Butterfield, 73, died Friday, March 28, 2003, in Jacksonville, where she was battling cancer.

Born April 9, 1929, in Red Rock, Okla., she was a resident of Ponca City, Okla., for 44 years and was a member of Harmony Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William "Mike" L. Butterfield, and and three sisters.

She is survived by sons Johnnie (Linda) of Katy, Texas , Billy (Betty) of Ponca City, Vernon of Dallas and Terry (Gina) of Lindale, Texas ; daughter Rita (Jim) Watson of Jacksonville Beach; 14 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Harmony Missionary Baptist Church, 2230 N. Union, Ponca City, Okla.

Donations can be made in her honor to the American Cancer Society, Oklahoma City Office, 8400 Sliver Crossing, Suite H, Oklahoma City, 73132. Quinn-Shalz, A Family Funeral Home, Jacksonville Beach.

Marylee Kathleen Hampshire

Former NB resident

Marylee Kathleen Hampshire, 74, a former resident of Neptune Beach, died Saturday, March 8, 2003. Born in Enid, Okla., she had recently lived in Columbia, Tenn. She was a member of the Junior League of Oklahoma City, Okla., and was the owner of Hampshire House Carpet & Interiors. She was in the real estate business in Oklahoma and Florida. She was an artist and enjoyed painting and doll sculpture. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Wayne Hampshire.

She is survived by sons Ed Walter (Sherry) Hampshire of St. Augustine and Randall D. (Patricia) Hampshire of Austin, Texas ; daughter Rebecca Sue (Kurt) Drumright of Spring Hill, Tenn.; sisters Jesse Waltina Kelly of Kansas City, Mo., Belva Darlene Kelly of Jones, Okla., and Donna Mae Kelly of Spencer, Okla.; nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held March 16 at Spring Hill Memorial Park and Funeral Home, Spring Hill, Tenn., with Father Patrick Connor officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Memorial Park.
