Virginia Whelchel McLeod, 81, of Jacksonville Beach, died at her home on July 19, 2002. Born Aug. 22, 1920, in Laurens, S.C., she moved to Jacksonville Beach in 1957 from Gaffney, S.C. She retired in 1990 as the options coordinator for Arvida.
She is survived by her husband, James R. McLeod; son John (Gay) Gertz Sr. of Jacksonville Beach; sister Polly Sarratt of Gaffney; grandchildren John Gertz Jr., Michele Gould, Meredith Markle, Michael Gertz and John-Philip Gertz, and one great-granddaughter.
A funeral service is scheduled 10:30 a.m. today, July 24, in the chapel of Quinn-Shalz, A Family Funeral Home, Jacksonville Beach. Interment and graveside services will be conducted Saturday at the Fredrick Memorial Gardens in Gaffney.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida.
Anthony J. 'Tony' Miller
Former Beaches resident
Anthony J. "Tony" Miller, 88, of Roswell, Ga., and formerly of Jacksonville Beach, died July 1, 2002. Born in Beverly, Mass., he first lived at the Beaches while serving in the Army in 1942. He participated in the recovery of money buried during the German saboteurs' landing June 17, 1942, in Ponte Vedra Beach. He went ashore on d-Day, fought in the battle for St. Lo, the liberation of Paris, drove for the Red Ball Express and served under Patton during the Battle of the Bulge. His unit ended World War II in Czechoslovakia. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
He was a past post commander and life member of VFW Post 3270, a life member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a member of St. Paul's By-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Jacksonville Beach.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Genevieve; son Joseph (Bonnie) Miller of Roswell; granddaughter Dana Joyner, and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 9 a.m. Aug. 10 at St. Paul's By-the-Sea Episcopal Church.
Edward 'Ted' John Lawrence Pye
Former NB resident
Edward "Ted" John Lawrence Pye, a 22-year resident of Neptune Beach and Jacksonville, died Friday, July 19, 2002, at Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville of complications from heart and lung illnesses. He was 73.
Born in Middlesex County, London, England, he was separated from his parents during World War II when he was 11 and was evacuated to the coast of England. He left school at age 14 and began working on an air base in the English countryside when he was 15.
He joined the Royal Navy when he was 17, visiting many ports, including Jacksonville in 1949. He returned to civilian life in 1954 and in 1968 began his own steel fabrication and erection company, remaining self-employed until retirement.
In 1980, Mr. Pye moved with his wife and children to Neptune Beach, where he was a soccer coach and referee. He was instrumental in organizing the fields and program for the Beaches Soccer Program.
He enjoyed history, music, philosophy and following the stock market, and he made frequent trips to England during the 1980s and 1990s.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Susan Pye; sons Nicholas of Atlanta, Barrie, Stephen, Duncan and Simon of England and Edward Jr. of Australia; daughter Hayley Bland of Jacksonville, and 16 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Jacksonville Humane Society.
Charles J.O. Wodehouse
Ponte Vedra Beach
Charles J. O. Wodehouse, a retired telephone company executive who was active in the Ponte Vedra Beach community, died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at his home. He was 85.
Born in New York City, he lived in New Jersey until his retirement to Ponte Vedra Beach in 1980. He was graduated from Lafayette College and in 1937 began his career with New Jersey Bell Telephone Co. Over 43 years, interrupted by service in the Army, he held numerous operating and administrative positions with New Jersey Bell and AT&T. His latest position was as senior vice president of rates and regulatory matters and corporate secretary.
He served the the Army's 67th Field Signal Battalion during World War II and supervised field communications both in Europe and the Philippines. He attained the rank of major and was awarded the Bronze Star.
He served as a director of several corporations, among them South Jersey Industries, the Heritage Bancorporation and Broad St. National Bank of Trenton, N.J. He was also a director of the New Jersey Economic Development Council, the NJ Utilities Association and the Greater Newark, Trenton and NJ State Chambers of Commerce.
He was a director of the Newark Urban Coalition, St. Francis Medical Center in Trenton, the Interracial Council for Business Opportunity and the NJ Citizens Transportation Council.
He was a trustee of the National Conference of Christian and Jews, the NJ State Museum and the Greater Trenton Symphony Orchestra.
He was a trustee on the Ponte Vedra Municipal Service District, an elected board, was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church in Ponte Vedra Beach and was cofounder of the Christ Church Foundation, which provides college scholarships for local students and financial support for other church and community activities. In 2000, he was given the "Good Guy" award by the Ponte Vedra Community Association.
He was an avid golfer, a member of the Ponte Vedra and Sawgrass country clubs, was president of the Ponte Vedra Golf Association and organized several charitable golf tournaments at local courses.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marjorie; daughter Priscilla G. Wodehouse; son Charles J.O. Wodehouse Jr.; sisters Evelyn Waterhouse of Bay Head, N.J., and Dorothy Baird of Portland, Maine, and grandchildren John Oakeley Spencer Sullivan, Charles J.O. Wodehouse III and Carey Crocker Wodehouse.

Harrison Doward Ford
Died: Wednesday, March 31, 2004
Age: 77
He was born March 16, 1927, in Milwaukee to Harrison Franklin Ford and Lucretia Dorward Ford.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He graduated from Colgate University and the University of Wisconsin School of Law. He retired to Naples, Fla., in 1987, following a long career as District Counsel for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. While in Naples, he was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. In June 2003, he moved to the Jacksonville area to be closer to his family.
Family members include his sons, Marshall Harrison Ford of Dunwoody, Ga., James Michael Ford of Winter Springs, Fla.; daughters, Julie Ford Frye of Ponte Vedra Beach, Stephanie Ford Blache of Dallas, Texas ; grandchildren, Lauren and Molly Ford of Winter Springs, McKenzie and Marshall Frye of Ponte Vedra Beach, Anna, Noelle, Sydney and Harrison Ford of Dunwoody. His brother, John Dorward Ford, predeceased him.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 3, in the Christ Episcopal Church of Ponte Vedra Beach with the Rev. Gerry Walston, officiating, followed by a reception in the courtyard. Private family Inurnment will be in the Memorial Garden of Christ Episcopal Church prior to the memorial service.

Thomas Richard Razzani
Died: Tuesday, March 30, 2004
Age: 74
He was born in North Tonawanda, N.Y., and moved to Ponte Vedra Beach in 1992 from Alden, N.Y. He spent 25 years in his own business as a hairstylist and worked in sales while in Jacksonville. He served in the United States Marine Corps and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Association. He was also a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church of Jacksonville Beach.
He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. Family members include his wife of 39 years, Sharon Proefrock Razzani; son, Rick Louis (Darlene) Razzani of San Diego; daughter, Kelly (Paul) Edwards of Jacksonville; brother, Anthony Razzani of Riverside, Calif; sisters, Sylvia Curtis of Rochester, N.Y., Delores Habermehl of Debary, Fla., Alberta Blasz of Eden, N.Y. and Janice Makey of North Tonawanda and grandchildren, Louis Russell Razzani, Ashley Celeste Razzani, Anna Elizabeth Edwards and Kate Lynne Edwards.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, April 2, in the Chapel of Quinn-Shalz Family Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 3 in the Chapel of Quinn-Shalz Family Funeral Home with the Rev. William Kelly as celebrant.

Doris Ruth Green
Died: Monday, March 29, 2004
Age: 80
She was born on April 8, 1923, to Frank and Rose Johnson of Akron, Ohio. She moved with her husband, Elton, of 57 years to Atlantic Beach in 1989. She graduated from Garfield High School and attended Akron University. She was a secretary at Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. She loved her church, flower arranging, animals, helping others, and her family. In Ohio, she was an active volunteer at The Children’s Home, past president of the Woman’s Garden Club, a Girl Scout leader and member of countless PTA’s. In Florida, she was a member of the Selva Marina Country Club, the Red Hat Society, and American Legion Post 129 of Jacksonville Beach.
Family members include her husband, Lawrence Elton Green, D.V.M.; three children, John L. Green, D.V.M., L.P.G.A. professional Judy Dickinson (Palm Beach), and Barbara Green, S.A.V.E. Program teacher; five grandchildren, Michele Green, Tiffany Stevens, Alicia Henderson, and Barron and Spencer Dickinson and two great-grandchildren, Noah and Nicholas Williams; several other relatives and lifelong friends including the dedicated and loving staff of Avante Nursing Home.
Private family services were held. In lieu of flowers, please do a "Random Act of Kindness" as was her true spirit to help others.

Robert T. Stubbs

Age: 72
Born in Savannah, Ga., he attended the University of Georgia and Auburn University before receiving his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Georgia Institute of Technology. He taught at Edward Waters College and the University of North Florida for a number of years. He authored a mathematics textbook that is still used in a number of schools. He had an interest in the sea since childhood and often sailed along the Atlantic Coast.
