Died: Wednesday, February 11, 2004
Age: 82

Born in Albany, N.Y., she lived in New Jersey and Florida for many years before moving to Ticonderoga, N.Y., where she became a painter and needlecraft artist. She volunteered daily at the Montcalm Manor Nursing Home and did other volunteer work in the community, for which she was given a governor’s commendation from the state of New York. She was preceded in death by her first husband, David H. Vanderwart in 1973, and her second husband, John H. Gaul.

She is survived by daughters Mary (James) Wells of Tarrytown, N.Y., Pam (Dan) Otis of Jacksonville Beach and Nancy (Jim) Grote of New York City; granddaughters Val Gargano and Lee Francis, and one great-grandson. Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, Jacksonville Beach.

Timothy Doyle Johnson Jr.
Died: Monday, February 09, 2004

Johnson was 17 months old. He is survived by his mother, Amanda Meier; brother Jacob Meier; sister Miranda Meier, and grandmother Janet Meier, all of Atlantic Beach, and several aunts and uncles.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. today, Feb. 13, at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 1701 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville Beach, with a funeral at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Ponte Vedra Valley Cemetery.

Frances Carroll Hagler
Died: Thursday, February 05, 2004
Age: 88

A service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, in the chapel of Beach United Methodist Church, Third Street at Seventh Avenue North, Jacksonville Beach.

Naomi Koenig Davis
Died: Thursday, January 29, 2004
Age: 78

Born July 22, 1925, she moved to Jacksonville Beach in 1957 from Chicago. Know by many as “Nonie,” she was active in local civic affairs as a charter member and past president of Baptist Medical Center-Beaches Auxiliary and a founding member and counselor for Jacksonville’s Suicide Prevention Center.

A member of Christ Episcopal Church, Ponte Vedra Beach, she taught confirmation and was a youth sponsor for many years and initiated the first Episcopal Church Woman’s Spring Retreat in 1980, which continues to be an annual event.

She was an artist and musician and played piano regularly at Pablo Towers and Vicar’s Landing. She hosted Bible home fellowships for many years and for the last 17 years had Bible lessons on Wednesdays at St. Mary’s Outreach in Springfield. She also was a member of a Bible study and prayer group at the Beach for the last 14 years. She led many spiritual retreats in the Diocese of Florida and abroad.

She is survived by her husband, Bill; children Carol (Keith), Jamie (Ben), Bill Jr. (Melissa) and Richard (Marcia); grandchildren Sean, Patrick, Danny, Anna, Kristie, Whitney and Palmer, and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, Ponte Vedra Beach, at 11 a.m. Feb. 21. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Community Hospice of Jacksonville. National Cremation Society, Jacksonville.

Frank A. Dobry
Died: Saturday, August 09, 2003
Age: 88

Born in Fort Pierce, Fla., he was a resident of Cisco and East Palatka before moving to Neptune Beach 23 years ago. He was secretary-vice president for the Charter Co.

He served in World War II as a first lieutenant in the Army’s 127th Infantry, 32 Division. He was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was preceded in death by his wife and his daughter.

He is survived by his sister Katheryn Vandillen, Juno Beach; grandchildren John, Chad, Clint, Chelby and Collyn Carraway, and other relatives.

A funeral was held Tuesday at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, with Father Lawrence Mulinda officiating. Interment followed at Beaches Memorial Park. Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, Jacksonville Beach.

Virginia L. Chatman
Died: Saturday, August 09, 2003

Born Dec. 14, 1932, in Dora, Mo., she was a homemaker and lived most of her life in Florida.

She is survived by sons Charles Nevin of Jacksonville Beach, James L. Nevin of Indianapolis, Ind., and Jay Nevin of Jacksonville Beach; daughters Sheri Waite of Melbourne, Fla., and Sharon Nevin of Greenville, S.C..; 10 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. National Cremation Society.

Henrietta Carmichael
Died: Thursday, August 07, 2003
Age: 85

She was born March 31, 1918 in Whiggum, Ga., and moved to Jacksonville in 1961. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Melody, and several brothers and sisters.

She was a member of Hogan Baptist Church, the women’s group of the church and the lunch bunch at her former church, Sans Souci Baptist, Jacksonville.

She is survived by her husband, Drew, and children Dee, Roy and Debbie, all of Jacksonville, and Pawnee of Jacksonville Beach.

Viewing will be at George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home, 4140 S. University Blvd., Jacksonville. Services will be held at Hogan Baptist Church, Jacksonville. Arrangements are being finalized.

Robert Wallace Graham
Died: Wednesday, August 06, 2003
Age: 92

Born in Framingham, Mass., Sept. 19, 1911, he was graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1934 and served in World War II in the Pacific Theater, commanding two destroyers. He received numerous military awards recognizing the contributions of his ships and crew.

After the war, he continued his service in the Naval Reserve. Adm. Graham moved to Jacksonville from New York City in the 1960s. He was a real estate developer and builder of homes and apartment complexes in the ’60s and ’70s.

He was a member and past president of the Jacksonville USNA alumni association, a past president of the Jacksonville Apartment Association and was active in Jacksonville civic affairs as a member of numerous local committees and associations.

He was an active member of the tennis and golf communities at Deerwood Country Club and later Queen’s Harbour Yacht & Country Club and was on the golf course as recently as three months before his death. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jesse Clark Graham.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy “Dee” Graham; brother John Graham; sons Robert W. Graham III and Capt. Clark Graham; daughter Missie Graham Sarra LePrell; step-children Lawrence von Seeger, Greg von Seeger, Steve von Seeger and Diana von Seeger;–grandchildren Rob Graham, David Graham, Geoffery Graham, Christopher Graham, Allison Graham Williams, Heather Graham Sarra, Scott Sarra, and great-granddaughter Grace Williams.

A private memorial service was held Aug. 9. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida on Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville. Quinn-Shalz, A Family Funeral Home, Jacksonville Beach.

Frances W. Waldner
Died: Wednesday, August 06, 2003
Age: 79

Born Sept. 17, 1923, in Purdun, Mo., she moved to Jacksonville Beach from California in 1967. She was a member of the Selva Marina Ladies Golf Association and the Beaches Ladies Golf Association.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Clarence “Mike” Waldner; brother Cash Bartimus of Grand Junction, Colo.; sister Pauline (Virgil) Strong of Murrieta, Calif., and numerous nieces and nephews of California and Connecticut.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Community Hospice of Northeast Florida. Quinn-Shalz, A Family Funeral Home, Jacksonville Beach.

Jack Klotz
Died: Monday, August 04, 2003
Age: 54

A 28-year veteran of the Jacksonville Beach Fire Department, he died in his home Monday, the day before he was to turn 55.

Mr. Klotz gave no indication of being in poor health, according to Fire Department employees.

“He was just a quiet, laid-back guy,” fire administrator Teresa Zokl said.

The cause of death is being investigated by the Medical Examiner’s office.

Born Aug. 5, 1948, in Johnstown, Pa., Mr. Klotz served in the Army and was a retired helicopter pilot with the National Guard. He was a veteran of the Vietname War and the Gulf war.

Survivors include his sons Jeff and Chris Klotz of Jacksonville Beach; parents John and Elizabeth Klotz of Johnstown; siblings Joe (Elaine) Klotz of Chesterton, Ind., Kathy Spaid of Johnstown, Libbie Hatmaker of Lancaster, Ohio, Debbie (Joe) Cianflone of Hamden, Conn., Terri (Dennis) Potoka of Sarasota, Fla, Mary Jo (Julian) Serrano of Miami and Mike (Carol) Klotz of Johnstown.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at First Christian Church of the Beaches, with the Rev. Mahlon S. Dixon Jr. officiating. Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, Jacksonville Beach, is in charge of arrangements.
