STEEVES, William Albert (Bill), died July 25, 2002 at home in Port Charlotte. Born in Ontario, Canada on January 22, 1910, he came to Florida with his parents in 1917 where he graduated from Landon High School in Jacksonville. He attended the Boston School of Art, and engaged in commercial are in New York city, including designing and creating a railway miniature for the 1938-39 World's Fair. He subsequently had art studio/galleries in Old Lyme, Conn., Richardson, Texas , and Ybor City in Tampa, operating the Call William Gallery on 7th Avenue for several years. For the past 10 years he has lived in Port Charlotte, Florida where he was active in the art community. He is survived by his brothers, Hartley of Port Charlotte and Richard of Jacksonville; as well as seven nephews and nieces, including Neva Sessums and Karen Morin of Tampa. Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, August 23, at First United Methodist Church of Tampa, 1001 N. Florida Ave., where he was a member of the choir.
VALLES, Jr., Mr. Manuel, 85 years young, passed away of natural causes on Tuesday, August 13, 2002. Mr. Valles was born in Asturias, Spain and arrived in Tampa at the age of 6 with his parents, Manolo and Balbina Valles and brother, Ulysses. Mr. Valles received his Masters Degree from the University of Florida in Political Science. He served for 17 years as consultant to governments through the world for a nonprofit Chicago firm known as Public Administration Service who's objective was to work with governments in improving their administrative systems. Mr. Valles served in that capacity in locations such as Burma, Thailand, Brazil, Venezuela, El Salvador, Canada, as well as The United States and many others, too numerous to mention. Mr. Valles' position placed him in direct contact a nd personal communications with many Heads of State, Diplomats and Presidents. In 1974, upon his return to Tampa, he was appointed as The Executive Director of Civil Service for the City of Tampa, which he served for several years. He was then appointed to the position of Administrator for Hispanic Affairs at the Tampa Police Department and was directly responsible for the accreditation and nation al recognition of the Tampa Police Department. Mr. Valles was presented with a Commendation for this endeavor by then Chief of Police Don Newberger. Throughout his career Mr. Valles philosophy was `As an individual, it is my responsibility to help others develop themselves to the fullest extent.` Mr Valles was an avid golfer and a member of Innisbruck Golf and Country Club and the Temple Terrace G olf and Country Club. He was also a Director with the Egypt Shrine Divot Diggers Golf Club and a Kentucky Colonel. Manuel Valles is survived by his wife of 61 years, Zoila, of Temple Terrace; and brother-in-law, Paul Fernandez of Bethesda, Maryland; his personal friend and confidant, Henry Huerta, along with many other close friends, whom he shared his life with and admired. At Mr. Valles' request , there will be no services. His ashes will be interred at the Centro Asturiano Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made, in his honor, to the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute.

KETCHAM, Victor Herbert, Jr., 76, of Brooksville, Fla., went to be with the Lord Sunday, August 18, 2002 at his home. He is survived by his wife, Merle C. Ketcham of Brooksville, Fla.; one daughter, Susan Chandler; one son, Michael Ketcham; one sister, Sarah Story; four step-children, Myrna Garner, Kenneth Woods, Phillip Woods and Terrence Woods; eight grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; three great-grand children; and 10 step-great-grandchildren. He was born June 26, 1926 on Springdale Farms in Chester, Virginia, and moved to Brooksville four years ago from Zephyrhills, Fla. He was a retired Accountant and a World War II Army Veteran. He was an active and supporting member of the San Antonio Community Church. Funeral services will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Hodges Family Funeral Home in Dade City. She was six years old when she was placed in a Catholic orphanage in Germany. She is survived by her adopted family, mother, Florence Keen; sister, Shelia and husband, Steve Baxley; nephew, Sean Hudson; and nieces, Taylane and Elani Hudson. HALBERT, Kirby, 77, of Tampa since 1960, died at home August 16, 2002 of a brain tumor (a 29 month battle sustained by his faith in God). Born in Lowndes City, Miss., he attended schools in New Hope, Miss. and Carrollton, Ala. and settled in Pensacola, Fla. on discharge from the US Navy in 1945. Mr. Halbert served courageously in World War II as a medic in `A` Medical Co. with the 1st Marine Div. under enemy fire during the combat landing on Willaumez Peninsula, New Britain. He graduated from Gupton Jones College of Mortuary Science in Nashville, Tenn. in 1951; was on the Florida Highway Patrol from 1957 to 1960; served as a State Inspector for the Florida State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors; and was a dedicated licensed Fla. Funeral Director for 50 years, retiring in 2000 from Adams & Jennings Funeral Home. He is survived by his wife, Helen Halbert of Tampa; daughter, Margaret Haitmanek (Robert) of Kunkletown, Pa.; son, James M. Halbert of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two step-daughters, Valerie Murray (Michael) and Kathleen Starling; brother-in-law, Lou Freeman of Tampa; four step-grandchildren, Kaeley and Tristan Murray; Michelle and Christine Haitmanek; three nieces, one nephew and their children in Miss.; cousin, Lewis A. MAYWORTH, Robert H., 80, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, died August 17, 2002 after a long illness. Survived by Erin, his wife of 55 years; daughter, Elizabeth Burke of St. Petersburg; son, Robert H. Jr. of Greensboro, N.C.; brother, John W. Mayworth of Sebring; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and loving family and friends. Robert was predeceased by his son, Paul Wallace and grandson, Adam Robert. He served in the Coast Guard in World War II and was a partner and skilled cabinet maker at Mayworth Showcase Works, the firm established in Tampa by his father. MOORE, Odell T., age 92, of Ft. Pierce, Fla, formerly of Tampa, passed away Wednesday, August 14, 2002. Survivors include her daughter, Frances Turner Cothron and her husband, James of Ft. Mrs. Moore worked for Pioneer Telephone Company, which later became GTE, from 1942 until her retirement in 1975. She was a loyal member of IBEW Local #1285 from 1943 until 1963 when they merged and became Local #841. She remained an active union member until her retirement.
