CARVER, Ivette Gonzalez, died at Bayfront Medical Center, on Friday August 30, 2002, following an eight year bout with cancer. She was born in Tampa, April 12, 1942 to Dr. and Mrs. Leo C. Gonzalez. She is predeceased by her father. She attended Plant High School and received a bachelor's degree at the University of Florida and master's degree at the University of South Florida. Initially, she prepared for a career in music, before dedicating her life to nursing in the hospital environment. Accomplished as a pianist and singer, recently, she had the opportunity to conduct the Florida Orchestra at a concert in St. Petersburg.
Ivette dedicated her professional life to helping others. Her contributions to Bayfront Medical Center - and the community it serves - are innumerable. Starting her career in Arcadia, Florida and after associations with South Florida Baptist Hospital in Plant City, Memorial Hospital, Tampa General Hospital and Doctors' Hospital in Tampa, she joined Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, 10 years ago, as director of surgery. She advanced to vice president for patient care services, and a member of the senior executive team, where she demonstrated an unwavering dedication to, and support of, the nurses she led. Under Ivette's leadership, Bayfront's nursing team earned the `Magnet Hospital Recognition Award` from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. This prestigious award, earned by fewer than 25 hospitals, is a vivid recognition of Ivette's unparalleled commitment to excellence in nursing care.
Ivette's devotion to her nurses, and their loyalty to her, is also reflected by the numerous awards Bayfront's nursing staff earned under her direction. Recent accomplishments include: Florida Medical Business Magazine's `Best Nursing Staff in Tampa Bay`, Advance for Nurses `Best Nursing Unit`, and Nursing Spectrum's `Florida Nurse of the Year`. Although Ivette garnered many personal awards as a result of her professionalism, dedication and leadership - including the Florida Organization of Nurse Executives' `Nursing Leadership Award` and Nursing Spectrum's `Special Recognition Award` - she always gave the credit for her success to her nurses. She was most proud of her award received this year, during Nurses Week, from Bayfront Medical Center, for being recognized as `An Inspirational Nursing Leader, Mentor and Coach`. Her nurses quoted, `You are our `Light` that never grows dim. You are Our inspiration`. Also, Ivette played a key leadership role in Bayfront Medical Center earning the hospital industry's most prestigious award: Accreditation with Commendation from the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JC AHO). This award placed Bayfront Medical Center among the top 15% of hospitals in the nation. She was a member of the Tampa Bay Organization of Nursing Executives and the Florida Organization of Nurse Executives, and served as president of both. She was a life-long member of the Delta Delta Delta social fraternity. She was a member of the Krewe of Venus. She was a dedicated Christian and member of the St. John's Episcopal Church in Tampa.
