Mr. Clarence Potter Sr., 79, of 1515 Louisiana Ave., died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, in Bay Medical Center. Funeral service for Mr. Potter will be today, Nov. 14, at 1 p.m. in Church of Christ in Ebro with Brother Xerxes M. Snell officiating. Interment will follow in St. Luke Cemetery. The remains will lie in state at the church one hour prior to service.

JESSIE 'FERN' SCRUGGS
Jessie "Fern" Scruggs, 87, of Panama City went to join the Lord on Nov. 9, 1999, while a resident of Glen Cove Nursing Pavilion. Mrs. Scruggs was born in East Moline, Ill., on Nov. 1, 1912. While a young child her family moved to McAllen Texas , in the valley. But she lived most of her childhood in San Antonio, Texas . She was a resident of Panama City for the last year and a half, coming here from Schertz, Texas . She was of the Baptist faith and had attended First Baptist Church of Panama City upon her arrival here. She had been a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Schertz prior to her relocation in Panama City. During World War II, she served as the staff car driver for the chaplain at Fort Sam Houston, Texas . Then as a military spouse she accompanied her husband on numerous duty assignments around the world including Nuremberg, Germany, during the war trials. Upon returning to San Antonio she worked as a telephone operator for WOAI television station and completed a career as a telephone operator at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas . After retiring from Randolph she lived in Schertz until her health required her to move to Panama City to be closer to family. She was preceded in death by her husband Sledge Scruggs, master sergeant, U.S. Air Force, son James A. Scruggs, sergeant, Air Force, and sister Lou Pfiel of San Antonio. She is survived by her sons Billy E. Scruggs of Lynn Haven, and Tracy C. Scruggs of San Antonio; brother Buddy Duval of Oklahoma City, Okla.; sister Harriett Bennett of Ava, Mo.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. According to her wishes, her body will be donated to the anatomical board of the state of Florida, University of Florida College of Medicine.

ROME WINDHAM JR.
Mr. Rome Windham Jr., 78, of 423 Beach Drive, Panama City, died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, in a local nursing home. Born in Madrid, Ala., Mr. Windham had been a longtime resident of Panama City where he was a member of First United Methodist Church and very active in the men's Bible class. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in World War II and the Korean War. Mr. Windham is survived by his sister Evelyn Carter; a niece, Becky Carter Hill; a nephew, Chester A. Carter Jr. and wife Gail; an aunt, Naomi Skipper, all of Panama City; three great-nieces; one great-nephew; and numerous cousins. Funeral service for Mr. Windham will be conducted Monday, Nov. 15, at 10 a.m. in Southerland Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Doug Newton and Dr. Louie Andrews officiating. Interment will follow in Madrid Cemetery in Madrid. The following gentlemen have been asked to serve as active pallbearers: Register "Cuz" Windham, Zeek Carter, Tommy Easterling, Chris Chrastina, R.R. Riley, Barlow Magee, Bob Davis and Bill Young. Those who wish may make contributions to men's Bible class of First United Methodist Church or Hospice of Northwest Florida in memory of Mr. Windham.

Graveside funeral services for Mrs. Jewell B. Anderson, 90, of Panama City, Fla., who died Saturday morning, Nov. 13, 1999, will be conducted Tuesday morning, Nov. 16 at 11 a.m. in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Grimes, Ala. Mr. Gerald McAllister will be officiating. The family will receive friends this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

ESSIE H. BLANKENSHIP
Mrs. Essie H. Blankenship, age 67, of 6603 Azalea St., Panama City, Fla., died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at her home. She has been a resident of the area since 1948, coming here from Apalachicola, Fla. Mrs. Blankenship was a member of Hiland Park Baptist Church and was a member of the Eastern Star of Panama City. She is survived by her sons: Jerry Wayne Blankenship and his wife Ann, and David Chris Blankenship, both of Panama City, Fla; her sisters: Eunice Dykes, and Earlene Davis both of Apalachicola, Fla., and four grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband: James "Jack" W. Blankenship. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 16 with the Rev. Henry Brittain officiating at the Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Interment will follow. The family will be staying at the home of Jerry Blankenship, 6605 John Pitts Road, Panama City, FL 32404.

A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. today, Nov. 14 at St. Dominic's Catholic Church with Father Peter Zalewski officiating. A eulogy will be given by Larry and Cheri Clark. MICHAEL KEITH NICHOLS
Michael Keith Nichols, age 26, of 6310 Hwy 2311, Panama City, Fla., died Saturday, November 13, 1999. Michael was a lifelong resident of the area. He was a 1992 graduate of Mosley High School and was a member of the weightlifting team. He was a skilled outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. He was Baptist by faith. He is survived by his parents: Jimmy & Jeanette Nichols of Deer Point Lake; his sister: Melanie Howle and her husband Burtt of Jacksonville, Fla.; his brother: Jason Nichols of Deer Point Lake; his paternal grandfather: Louie Nichols of Panama City; his maternal grandmother: Lydia Lynn of Panama City; a nephew: Byron Howle of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a host of aunts and uncles. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16 at the Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at the Evergreen Memorial Garden Cemetery. Asked to serve as active pallbearers are: John Barfield, Nate Donaldson, Keith Eddins, Wesley Eddins, Johnny Mac Lambert, David Marlow, Stephen Nichols and J.J. Roberson. ANNIE SMITH
Mrs. Annie Smith, 77, of Ebro, Fla., died Nov. 12, 1999, in a Ft. Walton Beach Medical Center. She was a native of Washington County, a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church of Ebro, Fla., and before retiring she, along with her husband, the late Tobe Smith, owned and operated the Tobe Smith Grocery Store in Ebro, Fla. Funeral Services will be at 1 p.m. (CST) Tuesday, Nov. 16 at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Ebro, Fla., with the Rev. Billy Marshall officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Luke Memorial Garden Cemetery in Vernon, Fla., with Cooper Funeral Home of Chipley, Fla., directing. The remains will lie in state at the church two hours prior to the service. Survivors include six daughters and sons-in-law: Elaine and Halie Hogans of Abbeville, Ala., Bonnie and Richard Thompson, Evilla Smith, Ava Smith, all of Tallahassee, Fla., Brenda and Bro. Eli Andrews of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., Miranda and Roger Green of Ebro, Fla.; five sons and daughters-in-law: Larry and Elouise Smith, Bruce and Carolyn Smith, all of Ebro, Fla., Willis and Nettie Smith of Sunny Hills, Fla., Tony and Gina Smith of Chipley, Fla., Walter and Franlisa Smith of Lynn Haven Fla.; two sisters: Helen (Henry) Chambers of Caryville, Fla., and Maggie Jackson of Vernon, Fla.; seven brothers: Willard Jackson of Union Dale, N.Y., Alphonso Jackson of Red Bay, Fla., Carson (Katherleen) Jackson, Thomas (Linda) Jackson, Horace (Elaine) Jackson, Tifford (Elaine) Jackson, Ira (June) Jackson, all of Vernon, Fla. Twenty grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

Michael W. "Muscle Mike" Howell, age 37, of 114 Rowe Avenue, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999. He was a lifelong resident of the area and a 1980 graduate of Rutherford High School. He was an avid water enthusiast and Captain/Pirate of his vessel The Stoned Crow. He is survived by his wife, Teri Howell; son, Drake Howell; parents, Lee and Sandra Howell; sisters: Linda Smith and her husband Steve of Orlando, and Sandy Thompson of Daytona Beach; nieces: Stephanie Gifford of Tampa and Stacy Gifford of Arlington, Ky.; nephews: Shane and Austin Smith of Orlando and numerous family and friends. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 18 at Howard Carlisle Baptist Church, 835 S. Berthe Ave., Callaway. In lieu of flowers donations to Panama City Marine Institute.

Mr. Tommy Lawton Smith Sr., age 65, of 2217 E. 7th St., Panama City, Fla., died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at his home. He had been a resident of the area for 35 years, coming here Screben, Ga. Mr. Smith served his country in the U. S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a mechanic for Cook-Whitehead Ford Co. and was Baptist by faith. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Patricia Smith of Panama City, Fla.; daughters: Virginia Barrentine and her husband Larry of Tallahassee, Fla., and Linda Creel and her husband Clarence of Houston, Texas ; sons: Keith Porter of Panama City, Fla., Robert Smith and his wife Linda of Norfolk, Va., and Tommy L. Smith Jr. and his wife Sherri of Panama City, Fla.; sisters: Teresa Bowen of Oregon and Lois Tutle of Ray City, Ga.; brothers: Laurece Smith of Screben, Ga., Donny Smith of Seattle, Wash., and Ronnie Smith of Brunswick, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 17 at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel. Asked to serve as honorary pallbearers are: Donnie Roberson, Colin Hutchinson, Clyde Hutchinson, Skipper Hutchinson, Jimmy Ray Hutchinson, and Buck Hutchinson. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today, Nov. 16 from 6 to 8 p.m.
