JOHN WILLIAM EMIG
Col. John William Emig, U.S. Air Force, retired, 78, of 7061 Hugh Drive, Panama City, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000 at his home. He has been a resident of the area since 1972. Col. Emig grew up in York, Penn., prior to entering the military in 1942. He was noted for surviving 33 days at sea in the South Pacific during World War II. He also served during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Era. He served as commander of the 73rd Aerospace Surveillance Wing while stationed at Tyndall Air Force Base. Col. Emig served 32 years in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the Parker United Methodist Church, member and past president of the Retired Officers Association, the Daedallions, Masonic Blue Lodge, Scottish Rites, Shaddai Temple, and the Royal Order of Jesters. He is survived by his wife, Margaret "Bebe" Emig of Panama City; a daughter, Sara Jane Moody of Gettsyburg, Penn.; two sons, John W. Emig, Jr. and James N. Emig, both of Panama City; granddaughters, Sara Marie Moody of Gettysburg, Penn., and Ann Emig of Panama City; and grandsons, John Robert Moody of Gettysburg, Penn., and Matthew Emig of Panama City. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000 at the Parker United Methodist Church with the Rev. R.C. Warren officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens with military Honors conducted by Tyndall Air Force Base and Masonic Rites conducted by the Callaway Lodge #369. The Lodge will be open an hour prior to service time. Active pallbearers will include Charter Officers of Shaddai Temple; Roy M. Bobo, Ralph Rich, William Clanton, W. Leland James, Russell A. Cole, Louis L. Roux, Ronald R. Miller and James E. Stone. Honorary pallbearers will include the Daedallions. Mrs. Betty Jean Dailey Harris of Fountain, Fla., died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000 at Bay Medical Center. She moved here in 1986 from Alabama and was retired from Delchamps. She is preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Myrtle Dailey. She is survived by her husband, Dean A. Harris; four sisters; three brothers; four daughters; one son; 11 grandchildren; mother-in-law, Mrs. Doris Emery; and many, many friends. She will be buried in Camden, Ala., today, Jan. 13, 2000.

Mr. Donn Hatchell, 72, of 7333 Talmadge Ave., Southport, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000 at his home. Born in Scranton, S.C., he moved here in 1952 from Phenix City, Ala. He retired from the Naval Coastal Systems Center as a machinist and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Southport, organized the first Boy Scout troop in Southport, organized and was very active in the Southport Little League Baseball Association and was a member of the American Legion Post No. 375. Mr. Hatchell is survived by his wife, Romona C. Hatchell of Southport; two sons, Manley Ross Hatchell and wife Elaine of Callaway, Keith Thomas Hatchell and wife Janet of Ebro; one brother, Marion Hatchell of Augusta, Ga.; three grandchildren, Donna Hatchell, Megan Hatchell and Becca Hatchell; one great-grandchild, Caitlin Morrison. Funeral services will be conducted today, Jan. 13, 2000 at 10 a.m. in the Smith-Southerland Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Scott Whetstone officiating. Interment will follow in Ebro Cemetery. Mr. Hatchell's sons and nephews will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be: all members and players of the Southport Little League Baseball Association, all members of American Legion Post No. 375, Dr. Daffin and Dr. Don Evens. Herman Clinton Lowe, 73, of Panama City, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000 in his home. He had been a resident of Bay County for 25 years, moving here from Fort Myers. He was a retired electrician. He is survived by his wife, Sadie Lowe of Panama City and his sister, Inez Tynes of Camp Hill, Ala. Private graveside services will be held in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Mr. James Thomas "Jim" McDermott, 78, of Warrenton, Mo., died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000 at his residence. McDermott was born in St. Louis, Mo., July 9, 1921. He was retired from the General Adjustment Bureau where he worked as an insurance adjuster. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church of Warrenton, the Grey Foxes and the Knights of Columbus. He served in the U.S. Army from April 16, 1943 to Feb. 16, 1946. He was preceded in death by his parents, R.J. and Mary McDermott. He is survived by his wife, Connie McDermott of Warrenton; a son Thomas Kevin McDermott and wife Dawn, of Panama City Beach; a daughter, Karen Irene McDermott of Eagle River Alaska; and four grandchildren. WILLIAM BROWN
William Brown, 77 of 301 E. 15th Street, Lynn Haven, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 2000, at his home. Brown was born Nov. 5, 1922, to Beulah Shepard and Wilbert Brown of Dawson, Ga. His uncle and aunt, Bud and Annie Shepard, contributed to his rearing. William married Emma Brown on Nov. 10, 1940. To this union, four daughters were born: Vera Hunter, Beulah Henderson, Betty Floyd and Vivian Brown. Under the ministry of Bro. Early B. Biddings in 1947, he obeyed the gospel at the Church Street Church of Christ in Blakely, Ga. In 1962 he became the minister of the Glenwood Church of Christ where he preached and taught the gospel for 35 years. Under his ministry, many were baptized and countless lives were touched throughout the community. Unfortunately, in 1966 he had to retire due to his health. He leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife; four daughters; two sons-in-law, Richard Henderson Jr., and Vasco Floyd, Sr.; 13 grandchildren: Bishop Jr. and wife Sarah, Wanda and husband Allen, Kenneth and wife Pamela, Yolanda and husband Winston, Gregory and wife Regina, Carlos and wife Gassettia, Terrence and wife Brigitte, Christopher, Vasco Jr., Dewayne and wife Teresa, Melanie, Barbara, and Malcolm; 22 great-grandchildren; Carlotta, Devan, Alexis, Allan James, Alecia, Erica, Kendra, Kenneth James, Shawntia, Richard III, Ebony, Bianca, Cassandra, Antwane, Jamaal, Jazmin, Kiarri, Carma, Ryan, Cameron and Destiny. Brother Brown also leaves three aunts: Mrs. Mattie Nash, Mrs. Carrie Dixon, and Mrs. Annie Shepard; three sisters-in-law: Ms. Edith Lewis, Mrs. Inez Brown, and Mrs. Vera O'Hara; two brothers-in-law, Irenus Brown and Percy O'Hara and a host of cousins and other relatives, and dear friends who will miss him. Funeral Services for Bro. Brown will be held Saturday, Jan. 15 at 1 p.m. in the Jenks Avenue Church of Christ, 3332 Jenks Ave., with Minister Xerxes M. Snell officiating. Interment will follow in the Lynn Haven Community Cemetery. Public visitation for viewing will begin at the funeral home at 1 p.m. today. A wake service will be held this evening in the Glenwood Church of Christ from 6 to 8 p.m. The remains will lie in state one hour prior to services at the church. SALANDA SUNTOLLIOUS 'SAL' CARROLL
Salanda Suntollious "Sal" Carroll, 34 of Panama City, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000. Salanda was born to R.E. And Diane Carroll on Aug. 19, 1965, in Panama City. He confessed Christ at an early age and united with the Tabernacle Baptist Church under the Rev. Butler Jones. He received his formal education in the Bay County School System, graduating from A. Crawford Mosely High School in 1985. Salanda was employed as a cook at Alvin's 007 and Sonny's Barbecue. He was also employed with Early Childhood Services and Tommy Smith Elementary in the maintenance department. In addition, he worked as a driver for C.A.R.E., Boyd Brothers and Cooper's Drugs. Salanda's hobbies included music, basketball and working out. He always tried to help others and bring out the best in them. To cherish his memories he leaves his wife, Danita Carroll; three sons, Antonio Carroll "Tony," Daundre Carroll "Dre," and Devante Carroll, all of Panama City; his mother, Diane Smith; father, R.E. Carroll and wife Dena; one brother, Reco Carroll and wife Sabrina; two sisters, Tony Carroll and Crystal Smith; four stepbrothers: Arelyah Carroll, Johnny Telfare, William Carroll, Roderick Carroll; one stepsister, Jazzmine Carroll; grandmother, Lillian Lewis; mother and father-in-law, Robert and Mable Lee, all of Panama City; four sisters-in-law: Barbarah Brown and husband Beauford of Tampa, Gayle Bouie and husband Calbert, of Deland, Carolyn Thomas and husband John of California, Marilyn Mitchell and husband Arthur of San Antonio, Texas ; a godmother, Hazel Griffin; and goddaughter, Jelysa Peterson of Panama city; and a host of nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts and cousins.
