Mr. James D. Nichols, 76, of 3812 East 8th St., Springfield, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at his home. He had been a resident of the area for 35 years, coming here from Bay Minette, Ala. Mr. Nichols retired from the U.S. Navy, serving his country during WWII, and was a member of the Springfield Community Church. He is survived by his wife, Edna Elizabeth Nichols of Springfield; daughters, Mazie Jean Nestle and her husband Bill of Washington State and Carolyn Holmes and her husband Neal of Grand Bay, Ala.; sons: Edward James Nichols and wife Debbie, Joe David Nichols and his wife Ann, and Jerry Thomas Nichols and wife Lynda, all of Panama City; 21 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 15 at the Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J.W. Hunt officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today, Jan. 14 from 6 until 8 p.m.

MARY ELIZABETH SCOTT
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Scott, 75, of 19828 Brandon Road, Fountain, who died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 14 at the Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Layne and the Rev. Gene Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Scott's nephews and great-nephews will serve as active pallbearers.

WILLIAM BROWN
William Brown, 77, of 301 E. 15th St., Lynn Haven, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at his home. Brown was born Nov. 5, 1922, to Beulah Shepard and Wilbert Brown of Dawson, Ga. His uncle and aunt, Bud and Annie Shepard, contributed to his rearing. William married Emma Brown on Nov. 10, 1940. To this union, four daughters were born: Vera Hunter, Beulah Henderson, Betty Floyd and Vivian Brown. Under the ministry of Bro. Early B. Biddings in 1947, he obeyed the gospel at the Church Street Church of Christ in Blakely, Ga. In 1962 he became the minister of the Glenwood Church of Christ where he preached and taught the gospel for 35 years. Under his ministry, many were baptized and countless lives were touched throughout the community. Unfortunately, in 1996 he had to retire due to his health. He leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife; four daughters; two sons-in-law, Richard Henderson Jr. and Vasco Floyd, Sr.; 13 grandchildren: Bishop Jr. (Sarah), Wanda (Allen), Kenneth (Pamela), Yolanda (Winston), Gregory (Regina), Carlos (Gassettia), Terrence (Brigitte), Christopher, Vasco Jr., Dewayne (Teresa), Melanie, Barbara and Malcolm; 22 great-grandchildren: Carlotta, Devan, Alexis, Allan James, Alecia, Erica, Kendra, Kenneth James, Shawntia, Richard III, Ebony, Bianca, Cassandra, Antwane, Jamaal, Jazmin, Kiarri, Kisharri, Carma, Ryan, Cameron and Destiny. Brother Brown also leaves three aunts: Mrs. Mattie Nash, Mrs. Carrie Dixon and Mrs. Annie Shepard; three sisters-in-law: Ms. Edith Lewis, Mrs. Inez Brown and Mrs. Vera O'Hara; two brothers-in-law, Irenus Brown and Percy O'Hara; and a host of cousins and other relatives, and dear friends who will miss him. Funeral services for Bro. Brown will be held today, Jan. 15, at 1 p.m. in the Jenks Avenue Church of Christ, 3332 Jenks Ave., with Minister Xerxes M. Snell officiating. Interment will follow in the Lynn Haven Community Cemetery. The remains will lie in state one hour prior to services at the church. The family will receive friends at 301 E. 15th St., Lynn Haven.

BOBBY LEE CLAY
Bobby Lee Clay, 56, of Panama City, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000 at his home. He graduated from Itajuki High School in Itajuki, Japan. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Florida State University, majoring in advertising and design. He had been a resident of Panama City since 1979, moving here from Atlanta, Ga., where he worked for Davidson's Department Store as art director and Rich's Department Store in advertising. He is survived by his parents, Albert and Beadie Clay; brothers, John Clay, Richard Clay and his wife Mary; sister, Donna Leonard and her husband Ben; and nephews, Adam Poston and David Poston, all of Panama City. Memorial services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. Those desiring to may make a donation to the American Cancer Society in memory of Bobby Lee Clay.

Mr. Paul Martin Shaffer, 57 of 700 Transmitter Road, Panama City, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000 at his home. He had been a resident of the area since 1990, coming here from Johnston, Ohio. Mr. Shaffer is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Shaffer of Panama City; daughters, Charlene Schrock of Newark, Ohio, Mary Rita Shaffer of Columbus, Ohio, and Sonya Taylor of Youngstown; a son, Raymond Shaffer of Grove City, Ohio; his mother, Thelma Crouch of Pataskala, Ohio; sisters, Ruth Morelli and her husband James of Dillonvale, Ohio, Alberta Vojacek and her husband Andrew of Johnstown, Ohio, and Linda Heuber and her husband Charles of Dillonvale, Ohio; brothers, Albert Shaffer of Hebron, Ohio, Charles Shaffer of Fallston, N.C., and Howard Shaffer of Titusville; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 17, 2000 at the Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Asked to serve as active pallbearers are, Andy Vojacek Sr., Andy Vojacek Jr., Albert Shaffer, Charles Shaffer, Kenneth Crouch, Chuck Heuber, Jeff Schrock and Howard Shaffer. LAURA BELL DOYLE
Mrs. Laura Bell Doyle, 75 of 808 Detroit Ave., Panama City, passed away Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000 in a local hospital. Mrs. Doyle has been a resident of Bay County for most of her life, and a member of the East Side Christian Church. Mrs. Doyle is survived by her husband, Jesse W. Doyle of Panama City; her daughters, Diann Watson and husband Homer of Winston-Salem, N.C., Jeannett Smith and husband Buel, Patricia Bland and husband David, Florence Schaffhauser and husband Ron all of Panama City; her sons, Jesse C. Doyle and wife Gloria of Lexington, N.C., and Robert M. Doyle and fiance Gwen Jones of Panama City; a sister-in-law, Gladys Canady of Charlotte, N.C.; 14 grandchildern: Henry Mishoe, Jerry Mishoe, Andy Watson, Marilyn Reynolds, Clifton Doyle, Steve Moore, Kevin Doyle, Teresa Cummings, Steven Doyle, Clay Doyle, Angie Gonzalez, Daniel Smith, Rachel Schaffhauser and R.J. "Paul" Schaffhauser; 17 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000 at the Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Douglas Brookins officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardnes Cemetery. Asked to serve as active pallbearers are Mrs. Doyle's grandsons, and her great grandsons as honorary pallbearers. JESSIE MAE JOHNSON REED
Mrs. Jessie Mae Johnson Reed was born May 13, 1913 in Fort Gaines to the late Mr. Ed Johnson and Mrs. Clara Johnson Faulk. She departed this life on Jan. 12, 2000. She was a faithful member of The Holy Temple Church of God in Christ at the time of her demise. She received Christ at an early age and was baptized with the Holy Ghost. Mother Reed served faithfully on the Mother's Board and was a licensed missionary in the Western Florida Jurisdiction of The Church of God in Christ. She leaves to cherish her precious memories four daughters: Dorothy M. Reed, Betty Reed, Bernice White (Frank), Martha Williams; three sons: Charles Fuller (Eloise), Roy Lee Reed and Johnel Reed; one sister, Emma Jean Hall of Newark, N.J.; a devoted granddaughter, Bernice Harrington (Morris); grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a host of relatives and friends, including two nephews of Newark, N.J.; an adopted son, Bernie Kemp (Alzie) of Fort Lauderdale; and an adopted daughter, Pequetta Freeman of Springfield. Funeral services for Mother Reed will be held Monday, Jan. 17, 2000 at 11 a.m. at the Holy Temple Church of God in Christ with Elder W.C. Green officiating. Interment will follow at the Garden of Memories. Visitation will be today from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Gainer Family Funeral Home. Family will receive friends at 1205 E. 9tth Court.

ORSON B. SPANN
Orson B. Spann, 87, of Hanceville, Ala., died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000. He was retired from U.S. Steel and the Cullman Flea Market. He also owned and operated the Miracle Strip Package Store in Panama City Beach for 13 years. He is survived by his wife, Doris Spann; children: Gary and Elizabeth Spann, Billy and Gaye Spann, Judy and Ken Harrison, Jeanine and Wayne Hilley, Susan Callahan, Oley and Pam Spann and Barry and Deborah Spann; sisters, Adale Whitehead, Tommie Lou Haskins; a brother, Walter D. Spann and wife Jean; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mr. Spann will be Monday, Jan. 17, 2000 at noon at Brown Service West Chapel. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be today, Jan. 16, 2000 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Brown Service West Chapel.

GEORGE CARLOS COOK
Mr. George Carlos Cook, age 67, of 1008 Wyoming Ave., Lynn Haven, Fla., passed away Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, in a local hospital. Mr. Cook was a native of Bay County, attended local schools, and graduated from Bay High School in 1950, and was a member, a Deacon and treasurer of the Covenant Presbyterian Church. He joyfully served as business manager for the Covenant Presbyterian Church and School from Aug. 28, 1995, to present, was superintendent of Water Treatment Plant of Bay County. He retired from Bay County Utilities Department on Aug. 25, 1995, after 24 years-plus service. Mr. Cook is survived by his loving wife of over 48 years, Mrs. Carol Hayes Cook of Lynn Haven, Fla.; two daughters: Mrs. Elaine Carr & husband Tommy of Demopolis, Ala., & Julie Slatcoff & husband Peter of Niceville, Fla.; two sons: Mr. George C. "Bubba" Cook Jr. & wife Sandra of Pensacola, Fla., & Mr. Tommy Cook & wife Susan of Panama City, Fla.; a brother, Mr. Marvette "Mike" Cook & wife Betty of Baton Rouge, La.; two sisters: Mrs. Virginia Elizabeth Cook Price & husband Bob, & Mrs. Floy Anne Cook McKenzie & husband Bob, both of Panama City, Fla.; six grandchildren: Jay & Kathryn Cook of Pensacola, Fla., Matthew & Erin Carr of Demopolis, Ala., Eric Peaden of Niceville, Fla., and Logan Cook of Panama City, Fla. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18 at the Covenant Presbyterian Church with Jesse Bealor and Arden Jensen officiating. Interment will follow at the Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Asked to serve as active pallbearers are: Jay Cook, Matthew Carr, Eric Peaden, Rick Young, Dr. Tom Randles, and Vordaman Van Bipper.
