JOHN BERRY
Mr. John "Jack" Berry, 66, of Panama City Beach, died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at his home. Born in Wilmington, Del., he moved to Panama City Beach in 1984. He was a postal service worker and member of St. Bernadette's Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Sports Park. Mr. Berry is survived by his stepchildren: June Sites and husband Ron, Catherine Duncan and husband Phaethan, Charles Blawn and wife Connie; sister, Catherine M. Walther and sons; five grandchildren: Keisha, Don, Token, Nate and Kyle; two great-grandchildren, Brittani and Victoria. A memorial service will be conducted on Friday, June 30, 2000, at 11 a.m. in St. Bernadette's Catholic Church with Father O'Shea officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Bernadette's Catholic Church in memory of Mr. Berry.

Funeral services for Mrs. Marilyn B. Funderburk, 47, of White City, Fla., will be conducted on Friday, June 30, at 9:30 a.m. EDT in Sycamore Methodist Church in Gadsden County, Fla., with Pastor Lee Cordell officiating. Interment will follow in Sycamore Methodist Church Cemetery. The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Tommy Pitts, Rick Lamberson, James Craig, Craig Seay and Scott Lamberson. Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of Grace Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Northwest Florida, the Gideon's International or American Cancer Society in memory of Mrs. Funderburk.

Mrs. Helen Hammonds, 79, of Springfield, Fla., died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, in a local hospital. Born in New Jersey, she moved here in 1989 from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She was a homemaker and Baptist by faith. Mrs. Hammonds is survived by her husband, Arthur Hammonds of Springfield; one son, Arthur Brian Hammonds and wife Patricia Ann of Springfield; one brother, Daniel Marusik of Bonita Springs, Fla.; one sister, Blanche Russo of Miami; three grandchildren: Kevin K. Bass of Springfield, Justin B. Hammonds of Austin, Texas, and Andrew B. Hammonds of Springfield. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, June 30, at 3 p.m. in Southerland Funeral Home with the Rev. Albert Hodge officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Mickey Fuller, Sonny Breland, Gary Wilkes, Dennis Fuller, Charlie Tucker and Howard Fiser. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening from 6 to 8 p.m.

MALLIE JOE LEWIS
Mr. Mallie Joe Lewis, 62, of Panama City, Fla., died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, in a local hospital. Born in Ozark, Ala., he moved here in 1956 from Andalusia, Ala. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Panama City. His father, F.A. Lewis, precedes Mr. Lewis in death. He is survived by his mother, Catherine Lewis; two daughters, Pamela Lewis and Ashley Lewis; two brothers, Ron Lewis and wife Joanna, Wayne Lewis and wife Anita; four sisters: Bobbie Jean Murphy and husband Royal, Linda Elmore, Freida Dunlap and husband Brian, Cathy Young and husband Matt; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. Graveside funeral services will be held today at 3 p.m. in Forest Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. Larry Curtis officiating.

JOHN STANLEY LINDSAY
Mr. John Stanley Lindsay, age 62, of 6204 Lance St., Callaway, Fla., died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at a local hospital. He was raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., by his loving parents, John and Molly, both deceased, and went on to serve his country as a proud member of the U.S. Air Force for 24 years. Panama City became his home in 1976. He graduated from Florida State University in 1988, and served as a teacher in the Bay County School System for over 10 years. John and his family were loyal members of St. Dominic's Catholic Church, where he served as an eucharistic minister and taught Sunday School classes for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Golden Key Honor Society, and the Garnet Key Honor Society. He was proud of his Scottish heritage, an avid scholar of history, a disciple of Tang Soo Do (1st degree black belt), a skilled archer, and master of hugs. He leaves behind a legion of friends and students touched by his courageous spirit and keen sense of caring, fairness, and unconditional love. John is survived by his loving wife, Virginia Lindsay of Callaway, Fla.; five dear children: Margaret (Peggy) Shepherd and her husband Douglas of Crestview, John Andrew Lindsay and his wife Chongae of Langley, Va., Patricia Green of Panama City, Fla., Natasha Rowe and her husband Tobias of Pensacola, Fla., and James Lindsay of New York City. There are also six grandchildren: Scott and Lindsey Shepherd, Andy Lindsay, and Tanya, TJ and Cory Green; plus beloved sister, Mary Cornell and her husband Richard of Queens, N.Y.; brother-in-law, William Schmith and his fiancee Carol Hutter of Babylon Village, N.Y.; sister-in-law, Linda De Costa of Amity Harbor, N.Y.; spiritual brother, Garrett Salsman and his wife Gail of Panama City, Fla.; plus numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 30, 2000, at St. Dominic's Catholic Church with Msgr. William Crowe and the Rev. Benedict Klucinec officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery. Asked to serve as active pallbearers are: Toby Rowe, Doug Shepherd, Johnny Lindsay, Garry Salsman, Mike Cooper, Townsend Cooper, Edward Hietshew and Joe Anderson. Honorary pallbearers include Dr. Denis Healey, Dr. John Richards, Dr. Matthew Sweetser, William Schmith, Jon Wright, Joe Rosignoli, Craig Kinnermon, Eric Kinnernom, Larry Bolinger, James Hughes, Ron Holman, Eddie Comerford, and John's many colleagues in the Bay County School System. The family will receive friends at the Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home today, June 29, 2000, from 1 to 8 p.m. with a Rosary Service to be held at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in loving memory of John Lindsay to the Bay Education Foundation's EXCEL Scholarship Program, 1311 Balboa Ave., Panama City, Fla. 32401.

HERBERT PATTON SAPP
Mr. Herbert Patton Sapp, born Feb. 28, 1910, died Saturday, June 24, 2000, in a Crystal River, Fla., hospital at the age of 90. Mr. Sapp accompanied his parents, Joshua Mercer Sapp and Ella Mae Patton Sapp, to Panama City in September of 1912. Panama City was home to Mr. Sapp for many years. He graduated from Bay High School in 1927. After graduating from the University of Florida School of Law, he was active in the private practice of law in the local area. One of his more famous cases occurred when he served as defense attorney for the man accused of killing a local hardware store owner, Mr. Van Kleek. He also served as a member and chairman of the local school board, school board attorney for both Bay and Walton counties, and as attorney for Bay County. He served as a gunnery captain in the Merchant Marines during World War II. Mr. Sapp was an active member of First United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday school, both in the adult and youth departments, and served both as a member and chairman of the board of stewards. Mr. Sapp branched into the marina business where he developed, owned and operated Treasure Island Marina on Thomas Drive. For the last 25 years, Mr. Sapp has resided in Fort Lauderdale, Okeechobee and more recently in Gulf Hammock, Fla. He is survived by his wife, O'dell Sapp of Gulf Hammock, Fla.; two children, Herbert P. Sapp Jr. and Dr. Miriam Sapp Bozarth, both of Panama City; three stepchildren: Bill Forester and Pat Pritchard, both of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Carol Soderquist of Vero Beach; six grandchildren: Teresa Kennedy of Katy, Texas, James M. Sapp Jr., Allison Sapp, Troy Sapp and J.P. Bozarth, all of Panama City, Kimberly Smith of St. Louis, Mo.; several stepgrandchildren; his brother, William Howard Sapp of Panama City. A son, James Mercer Sapp, precedes Mr. Sapp in death. Graveside funeral services will be at 10 a.m. in Greenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Si Mathison officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Patronis, Johnny Patronis, Tommy Smith and John Christo Jr.
