HERBERT ELLIOT PETERSON
Sunrise began to the soul of Bro. Herbert Elliot Peterson on Nov. 26, 1924 in Holford to the late Will and Florence Peterson. Sunset ended on July 27, 2000. Herbert was converted at an early age in Vickburg. After moving to Lynn Haven, he united with Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church serving as a faithful trustee, a steward and a lay leader. He was loved and appreciated by children and adults that learned from this doorkeeper in the house of the Lord. He was a member of empire Bethel No. 202 where he was a dedicated and faithful member. Bro. Peterson served very well in whatever service he was affiliated with until his health failed. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ella Mae Peterson Glenn and father-in-law, Charlie Alexander. He leaves to cherish his memory a very loving and dedicated wife, Mrs. Carrie Peterson; three children: Rubie Peterson Reddings of Panama City, Herbert Peterson and wife Debra and Jimmy Lee Peterson both of Lynn Haven; mother-in-law, Mrs. Tommie Mae Alexander of Shorter, Ala.; sister-in-law, Ms. Adrianne Giles of Shorter; brothers-in-law: Mr. Bobby Alexander and wife Annie of Tuskegee, Ala., Mr. Melvin Alexander and wife Josie of Atlanta, Ga., Mr. Eddie Alexander of Tuscoloosa, Ala., Mr. Ausby Alexander and wife Flora of Atlanta; sisters-in-law: Essie Peterson, Leona Peterson, and Mildred Peterson; grandchildren: Horace Mason of Panama City, Arthur Peterson and wife Evelyn of Virginia, Jimmy Jr., Roniquet, B.J. Sims, Tamara Peterson, Jasmine Peterson, Leshawn Peterson, Michelle Forward all of Lynn Haven, Latisha Reddings of Miami; 18 great-grandchildren and god children; John and Terry Moore, Gwen Smith, Marcus Hall, and the late Carol Sheffield; a host of nieces, nephews and sorrowing friends. Funeral services for Bro. Peterson will be held Tuesday, August 1, at the Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church with the Rev. D. Myrick officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. Visitation will be today at the Gainer Family Funeral Home.

EDNA CAMPBELL BURNS
Edna Campbell Burns, 91, of Panama City, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, in her home. She had been a resident of Panama City for 11/2 years moving here from Waco, Texas. She was a member of the Central Christian Church in Waco, and attended Heritage Bible Church in Panama City. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, H. Amos Burns, and a son, David Burns. She is survived by a daughter, Cynthia Hazard and her husband the Rev. Henry Hazard of Panama City; son, Robert Burns of Victor, Colo.; 8 grandchildren: Pamela Burns, Mike Burns and wife Lanette, Rick Burns and wife Lisa, Jeff Burns and wife Dawn, Linda Kay Burns, Cheryl Allain and husband Paul, Gary Burns and wife Johnice, and Tim Hazard; and 13 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held today at 4 p.m. in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Henry Hazard officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3 to 4 p.m. today. Interment will be in the Waco Memorial Park, Waco, Texas. Those desiring to may make a contribution to the Heritage Bible Church Building Fund, 3380 State Ave., Panama City, Fla. 32405 in memory of Edna Burns.

LEONARD GRAHAM
Leonard Graham, 87, of Panama City, died Saturday, July 29, 2000. He worked for Swift Manufacturing Company in Columbus, Ga., for 22 years before moving to Panama City in 1956. He was the retired owner and operator of the Georgian Terrace Motel and the Leonard Graham Realty on Panama City Beach. He was a member of the Panama City Beach Rotary Club, where he had served as past president and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of the Northside Baptist Church, and was an inactive deacon. He was preceded in death by a sister, Braddis Harden. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Louise Graham of Panama City; daughter, Carmen Hearn of Orlando; brother, James Graham; 4 sisters: Helen Stewart, Mary Hutchison, Grace Coleman and Ruth Jackson, all of Columbus; 3 grandchildren: MSGT Stewart Hearn of Germany, Stanley Hearn of Orlando, Steven Hearn of Tampa; 6 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jerry Moore officiating. Interment will follow in the Forest Lawn Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. today. Those desiring to may make a contribution to the Northside Baptist Church Building Fund or Hospice of Northwest Florida in memory of Leonard Graham.

JOEL AMOS HOWARD SR.
Joel Amos Howard Sr., 91, of 1709 Sherman Ave., Panama City, died Saturday, July 29, 2000, in a local hospital. He had been a resident here since l925, coming here from Slocomb, Ala. He owned and operated Howard Motors and also worked at Nelson Buick Company. He was a member of the Good Sam Club, the Gulf Coast College Foundation Board, was a life member of the DAV and was a charter member of the Hiland Park Baptist Church. Mr. Howard served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Seabees. He was preceded in death by his son, Frank D. Howard; his sister, Mildred Snow; and brother, Milburn Howard. He is survived by his wife, Naomi Parker Howard of Panama City; two sons, Joel A. Howard Jr. of McAlpin Ala., George D. Howard of Pensacola; daughter, Sandra Jo Howard Elliott of DeFuniak Springs; two stepsons, French M. Napper of Wewahitchka, Thomas Mizener of the Panama Canal; two stepdaughters, Norma Beyer of Yulee and Linda Sullivan of Keansburg, N.J.; l4 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, W.T. Howard of Panama City, Hilburn Howard of Bagby Minn. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at l0 a.m. in the Hiland Park Baptist Church with the Rev. Donald Pickerill officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. today. MARY JANE PHILLIPS
Mary Jane Phillips, 73, wife of Robert Frederick Phillips of Panama City, passed away quietly in her home Saturday after a long illness. She was surrounded by her family. Mrs. Phillips is survived by her husband; one sister, Mildred Agnes Smith of Longview, Texas; two daughters, Christene Elizabeth Harvey and Sue Lynn Vaughn, both of Blue Springs, Mo.; stepson, Andrew Cameron Phillips of Crotton, N.Y.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Phillips was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She has attended the LDS Panama City Ward for the past 13 years, where she has shared her musical talents over the years. Previously she has served in youth leadership and other assignments. The deceased was born Mary Jane Sumerow on August 5, 1926, in Knoxville, Tenn., to John Sumerow and Agnes Jane Christopher Sumerow. She moved with her family to Nederland, Texas, around 1935, where she resided most of her life. She was an active member of the Pilot International, where she served as chapter president, as well as in various state and national organization offices. A certified professional secretary (CPT), she retired from Union Oil Company in 1986 before moving to Chattanooga, Tenn., soon afterward, to Panama City. Mr. and Mrs. Phillips were married on June 9, 1987, in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Atlanta, Ga., Temple. Mrs. Phillips was beloved by many and will be missed. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 1, in the Panama City Ward Church, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 3140 State Ave., off Baldwin and Bishop, with Gene Simonds officiating. The family will receive friends at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home from 6 to 8p.m. today, July 31.

ALEX 'JODY' LEAVINS JR.
Mr. Alex "Jody" Leavins Jr., age 73, of 2426 Davids Road, Vernon, Fla., formerly of Panama City, died on Sunday, July 30, at his home, where he resided with his son-in-law, Mark McCoy and granddaughter, Haley Jean McCoy. "Jody," known as "The Alligator Man," was a musician with the Jody Leavins Band at the Playhouse Lounge for many years. He is survived by his son, Jimmy Leavins; daughters, Dianne Leavins, June Scheer, Lauretta Mitchell and Angela McCoy; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; five brothers; three sisters; stepmother; and extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Leavins; a son, Timothy A. "Tater" Leavins; and former wife, Jewel M. Leavins. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2, at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Wheeler officiating.
