CALVIN CARLTON WASHINGTON
The late Calvin Carlton Washington was born Oct. 1, 1909, in Faceville, Ga., to the union of Henry and Bessie Washington. He was the second of four children born to that union. Calvin lived only a short time in Faceville, Ga., before his family moved to Gadsden County, Fla., and then to Panama City, Fla., where he attended the local schools. He accepted Christ at an early age and united with New Bethel Baptist Church. He later joined Macedonia Missionary Church, where he remained for 25 years, before becoming a founding member of Redemption Lutheran Church. At Redemption, he served faithfully for 32 years. He served as lay person, congregation president, superintendent of Sunday School, and in many other capacities. While a student in the public school in Bay County, two of his teachers took an exceptional interest in his dream to continue his education beyond that which was available in Panama City at the time. They encouraged his father to send the young Washington to Tuskegee Institute. With family support and little money, Calvin entered Tuskegee Institute and studied under the late Booker T. Washington and Dr. George Washington Carver. Having stepped out on faith, he worked his way through high school and college. He later received a masters degree in administration from Atlanta University and completed further studies at various universities, including Florida A&M University, University of Minnesota and the University of Texas. After retirement, he attended Gulf Coast Seminary and earned a doctorate degree in religious education. Calvin (Wash) met and married Louella Robinson in December 1938. To this union, a daughter, Jacqueline, was born. C.C., as he was known throughout Bay County, not only excelled as a teacher but later, too, as an educational and civic leader. After graduating from Tuskegee in 1935, he accepted his first teaching position in Panama City and later served as prinicpal in Gadsden County. Seeking greater opportunities, he returned to Panama City in 1944 and accepted the principalship of Rosenwald High School where he spent 20 years, the greater position of his professional life. In 1958 he accepted the position of President of Rosenwald Junior College and served in that post until it merged with Gulf Coast Community College in 1966. He has numerous honors and awards to his credit for meritorious contributions to education and civic affairs. On April 16, 2001, C.C. was called to his eternal rest at 4:10 a.m. He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife of 62 years,; a loving daugher, Jacqueline; three nephews: James A.
