JAMES RAY POWELL JR.
James Ray Powell Jr., 63, of Sand Hills, Fla., died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, in a local hospital. He was a lifelong resident of Panama City and was a retired boilermaker. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Lynn Haven, the Boilermaker Union, and was an avid Alabama Crimson Tide fan. He was preceded in death by his father, James Ray (Jim) Powell Sr., and a sister, Virginia Spikes. He is survived by his mother, Jewell E. Powell of Sand Hills; sister, Eva Shoemaker and her husband, Floyd of Southport; niece, Crystal Shoemaker; brother, Charles Jeffcoat of Parker; sister, Marguarite Kersey of Cottonwood; two aunts, Elvie Harmon, Betty Powell; devoted neighbors and friends, Lee Stokes, Karen Whitner, Ray and Angie Thompson; and numerous other, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Graveside funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in Millville Cemetery with the Rev. Billy Joe Melvin Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. today. The family will be at the home of Eva Shoemaker, 1402 2nd St., Southport. Active pallbearers are Luke Arrant, Scott Harper, Tommy Davis, Ray Thompson, Billie Joe Melvin and Jason Creamer. The family would like to thank the doctors and nursing staff of the SICU and 2nd Floor Step-down Unit of Bay Medical Center for their concern and compassion .

LOUIS JOSEPH STEINKE
Mr. Louis Joseph Steinke, age 69, of Colby, Kan., passed away on May 7, 2001, in Panama City. He was born in Brush, Kan., on April 2, 1932. He served in the U.S. Army for 20 consecutive years of service. After his retirement, he continued working as an automotive maintenance supervisor for an additional 21 years. He was a veteran of the Vietnam conflict (x2) and the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his wife of 38 wonderful years, Hazel L. Steinke; sons, Robert and Louis; daughter, Brenda; grandchildren, Joseph, Richard, Joseph, Michael, Robert and Jamie. Louis Steinke has touched and left a special place in everyone he met. His dedication to his family is immense, his loyalty to this friends is boundless, and his heart was forever giving for those in time of need. He has taught many of us the value and worth of time, life, and love. But, while teaching these things, he also taught those around him how to spend them. Our father was one of the most devoted parents that any child could ask for. His hobbies included gardening and fishing. His heart and soul was devoted to his wife. His memories will always remain deep inside all of us. God bless you Daddy. You are always with us and us with you. His dedication to the happiness of others shall be cherished because there is only one Daddy. You're loving family ... the Steinke's. Memorial services will be held for Mr. Louis Steinke on May 10 from 5 to 7 p.m. and on May 11 for funeral services starting at 10 a.m. Both services will take place at Southerland Family Funeral Home .

JACK EDWARD BASHAM
Mr. Jack Edward Basham, age 67, of 4574 Cedar St., Panama City, Fla., died Thursday, May 10, 2001, at a local hospital. He had been a resident of the area since 1972, moving here from Dayton, Ohio. Mr. Basham was a member of First Baptist Church of Parker. He also served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Basham is survived by his wife, Christine Basham of Panama City; a son, David Basham and his wife Peggy of Cartersville, Ga.; daughters, Connie Terry and her husband Robert of Panama City and Lisa Stevens and her husband Mark of Mount Olive, N.C.; brothers: Roy Basham Jr. of California, Don Basham of Miami, and Perry Basham of Vinton, Va.; a sister, Mary Thurman of Vinton, Va.; and grandchildren: Keith Basham, Scott Basham, Joshua Stevens, Jordan Stevens, Christopher Terry, and Nicole Terry. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 13, at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Craig Hartzog and the Rev. Donnie Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery. Asked to serve as active pallbearers are: Frank Bright, William Gorey, John Clemons, Houston Taylor, Joe Alexander, and Robert Terry. Honorary pallbearers will include: Deacons of First Baptist Church of Parker and members of Mr. Basham's Sunday School Class. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday, May 12, from 6 to 8 p.m.

WILLIE BROWN SR.
Mr. Willie Brown Sr., 83, of 603 E. 16th St. died Saturday, May 5, 2001, at his home. Willie Brown was born on Aug. 29, 1916, in Bay County to Sam and Effie Florence. Willie was the youngest of two children. His brother, Heary Brown, preceded him in death. Willie's illness was long term and he departed this life on May 5, 2001, at his loving daughter and son-in-law's home, Henry and Betty Jean Henderson. Willie acknowledged Jesus Christ as his personal savior during his illness. He was joined in holy matrimony to Mildred Slappy and to this union three children were born, Betty, Jean and Alice Faye Ruth. Willie also joined in holy matrimony to Elizabeth Hooks and to this union four children were born: Marie, Willie Jr., Betty Ann and Johnny Mack. Later in life Willie joined in holy matrimony to Lucille and this this union Joann was born. Willie leaves to mourn Betty Jean (Henry) Henderson of Panama City, Alice Faye Ruth of Florella, Ala., Betty Ann McGhee (Freddie) of Los Angeles, Calif., Marie Jackson of Los Angeles, Calif., Joann Brown of Ocala, Willie Brown Jr. of Panama City and Johnny Mack (Annette) Brown. He also leaves fourteen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services for Mr. Brown will be held Saturday, May 12, at 2 p.m. in Second Mt. Moriah Baptist Church with the Rev. Leon Jones, officiating. Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery. Public visitation will begin this afternoon at the funeral home from 1 to 8 p.m. The remains will lie in state one hour prior to services at the church. The family will receive friends at 603 E. 16th St.

ELEANOR CHILDREE
Mrs. Eleanor Childree, age 75, of Panama City, Fla., passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at her residence. She was a native of Shorterville, Ala., and had lived in Panama City for 48 years, coming here from Eufaula, Ala. Mrs. Childree worked seven years for Southern Bell before moving to Panama City. She was retired after many years as the Food Service Manager at Gulf Coast Community College. Mrs. Childree was a member of Central Baptist Church. She is survived by her children: Patricia Lewis and her husband Jerry of Lynn Haven, Michael Childree and his wife Cindi of Bonifay, Ronald M. Childree and Becky Scott of Islandlake, Ill., and Sue Carolan and her husband Jim of Panama City Beach; a brother, John Hayes and his wife Janie of Tampa; a sister, Pearla Mae Hartis of Eufaula, Ala.; nine grandchildren: Erin and Tiffany Lewis, Eddie and Chris Childree, Scott Reid, Amy Huggins, Morgan and Makenzie Carolan, and Dan Scott; and three great-grandchildren: Shelby, Alex, and Lucas Childree. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 12, at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Barton and the Rev. Greg George officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today, May 11, from 6 to 8 p.m.

CHARLES DAVIS
Mr. Charles "Charlie" Davis, 74, of Port St. Joe, Fla., died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, in Tallahassee. Born in Early County, Ga., he moved here in 1947. He was retired from the St. Joe Paper Company and a member of First Baptist Church of Port St. Joe. He was also past president of Local Papermakers Union No. 379. Graveside funeral services will be conducted today, May 11, at 2 p.m. EST in Holly Hills Cemetery with the Rev. Brent Vickery officiating.

ESTHER COOPER KILLINGBECK
Mrs. Esther Cooper Killingbeck, 85 ,of Pace,Fla..(formerly of Lynn Haven) went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, April 9, 2001, in a health care facility in Santa Rosa. She was born in Lynn Haven, Fla., and returned here in 1949 and resided most recently in Pace, Fla. Esther had been a Federal Civil Service employee with the USAF at Warner Robins, Ga., an income tax consultant and a Justice of Peace, Dist.II, Lynn Haven. She was proud to be the daughter of one of the Union Soldiers who established Lynn Haven as a Union town. The Statue of the Union Soldier in Lynn Haven honoring these soldiers, faces north. Esther is preceded in death by her mother and father, beloved husband George W. Killingbeck Jr. who died in 1992 to whom she was married for 40 years, and one brother who died as a child. She is survived by two sons, Robert E. Lea of Fayetteville, Ark., Regal M. Lea of Pensacola, Fla.; two daughters, Roberta L. Dees of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Ramona L. Matchett and husband Jack of Chumuckla,Fla.; half brother, Jesse Cooper; half sister, Della Sloan; 16 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. Graveside funeral services will be held at Lynn Haven Cemetery today, May 12, 2001, with the Rev. J.W. Hunt officiating. Southerland Family Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

S. J. (MAC) McCABE
Mac McCabe, 64, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, May 9, 2001. He was born November 9, 1936, a son of the late Shirley B. and Florence M. (Krick) McCabe, in Darke County, Ohio. He was in the U.S. Air Force four years (1956-1960). He retired from federal civil service in 1988. Late in life he accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior. Mac became a Christian, was baptized and joined the Baptist church. He was a loving husband and father, and touched the life of all who knew him. He will be sorely missed. Mac is survived by his wife of 23 years, Virginia L. McCabe and son Jason T. Schiefer and his wife Misty; and our grandchildren, Jacob and Madison Schiefer. Mac had requested that family and friends who can, to donate blood to their blood bank of choice in honor of his memory. His wish is to in some small way repay all the strangers who gave blood which enabled him to survive his chemotherapy. We will be eternally grateful. We want to express our heart felt thanks to our nurse, Julia Kearbey, for her extraordinary efforts and faithful support throughout the past year. She's one in a million. Our doctor, Stephen J. Toner, will forever have our gratitude. He has been there for us throughout the long years of Mac's illness. Thank you so much. Margaret L. "Miss Maggie" Schweigel, 76, of Mexico Beach, Fla., died Wednesday at her home. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. CST Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Mexico Beach with burial at Florida National Cemetery at a later date. A native of Englewood, N.J., she lived in Mexico Beach since 1994. She was a former resident of Homasassa Springs, where she was active in the Elks Club. She is survived by three daughters: Lyn Jones of Tallahassee, Patti Schweigel of Hamilton, Ohio, and Laura White of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two brothers, Howard Jungkind of Sun City Center, Fla., and G. Robert Jungkind of Helendale, Calif; one sister, Ruth Ward of Sun City Center; two grandsons, Jeffrey Butterfield and Gabriel Butterfield, both of Hamilton, Ohio, and one granddaughter, Kelly White of Scottsdale Ariz. ENOCH WILLIAMS
Mr. Enoch Williams was born March 28, 1919, to the late Roscoe and Julia Dent Williams in Louisville, Ga. Mr. Williams departed this peaceful life on May 8, 2001. He was a resident of Panama City for 45 years. Mr. Williams was preceded in death by two wives during the late 1970s and one sister in 1984. Mr. Williams was a faithful member of Mt. Zion AME Church. Mr. Enoch Williams leaves to mourn his death six loving children: Gladys (Allen) Johnson of Baltimore, Md., Enoch (Sarah) Williams of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Solomon Williams of Durham, N.C., Vender Rae Williams of Fort Lauderdale, Malchester Williams of Panama City, and Annie (aka Sarah) Smith of Panama City; one sister, Mattie Rachel of Fort Lauderdale; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 14 nephews and nieces; two sisters-in-law, Ethel McCloud and Bernice Walden of Louisville, Ga.; a host of great and great-great nephews and nieces; and many friends from Panama City and Louisville, Ga. Special thanks to the Hospice of the Emerald Coast and Nurse Phyllis Spikes. JAMES N. CHICHESTER
James N. Chichester, beloved father, grandfather, artist, educator and author passed from this earth Friday May, 11, at his home in Lynn Haven, with the company of his loving family. He was 83 years old. Mr. Chichester was born in Brooklyn, New York on April 10, 1918, to Nathaniel James and Elsie Chichester. Mr. Chichester was schooled at CCNY and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. A resident of Lynn Haven for nearly 50 years, Mr. Chichester taught commercial art at Haney Vocational Technical Center for 37 years and taught art privately throughout the local area until 1995. Mr. Chichester was also a very successful artist in his own right, having had his paintings exhibited in all 50 states and several countries around the world. He was very active in the local arts community, having been the first charter president of the Panama Art Association. He exhibited his own work often locally and sold his work from his home studio and through several outlets in the region. Mr. Chichester also wrote and published books regarding biblical history and genealogy. He was a member of Lynn Haven Presbyterian Church. Mr. Chichester was also an avid traveler, having made numerous visits to the British Isles and continental Europe, as well as trips to the Caribbean, South America and Hawaii. He is survived by his loving wife of over 58 years, Arlene; his children, James Chichester of Gainesville, Fla., and Carol Ramos of Panama City; his grandchildren, J. Phillip Anderson of New York, N.Y., James C. Chichester of Gainesville, Whitney Anderson of Pensacola and Michael Ramos of Panama City. He is also survived by his brother, Edward Chichester of Queens, N.Y. Mr. Chichester's family will be receiving friends at his Lynn Haven home. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 14, at Lynn Haven Presbyterian Church.
