VERLIE J. HARPER
Mrs. Verlie J. Harper, 87 of Panama City, passed away Saturday, July 28, 2001, in a local hospital. Born in Blounstown, Fla., she moved to Gulf County in 1946. After teaching school and selling insurance, Mrs. Harper was a postal clerk at the United States Post office in Port St. Joe. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Wewahitchka. Mrs. Harper is preceded in death by her parents, Stephen and Lydia Johnson; her husband of 56 years, Buell H. Harper Sr.; two sisters, Vida Harrell and Audrey Smith; and one brother, Monroe Johnson. She is survived by three sons, Buell Harper and wife, Janet of Panama City, Jimmy Harper and wife, Carolyn of Wewahitchka, and David Harper and wife, Billie of Panama City; one brother, Walden Johnson and wife, Jenny of Orange Beach, Fla.; one sister, Estelle Chason of Jacksonville, Fla.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. Harper will be conducted Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at 1 p.m. in the Southerland Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The following gentlemen will serve as active pallbearers, Mike Harper, Todd Tindell, Randy Harper, Rodney Johnson, Jack Langham and Kevin Daniel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

JAMES ANDY MANLEY
Mr. James Andy Manley, age 85, of 325 Laureno Place, Panama City Beach, Fla., passed away Saturday, July 28, 2001, at a local nursing home. He had been a resident of Bay County since the 1970s coming here from Pensacola, Fla. Mr. Manley was of the protestant faith, served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a demolishion expert, former Golden Gloves champion, fought in Madison Square Gardens, inducted into Golden Gloves Hall of Fame in 1980, loved to fish, and was a former car dealership owner in Pensacola, Fla. Mr. Manley is survived by his wife, Renate Manley of Panama City Beach, Fla.; two sons, James Gary Manley of California, and Wayne Allen Manley of Sarasota, Fla.; five stepchildren, Ronald Whiting of Marianna, Fla., Travis Whiting of Pensacola, Fla., Helen Whiting of Panama City, Fla., John Whiting of Hamilton, Ohio and David Whiting of Southport, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Mr. Manley was precded in death by a sister, Becky Walden.

MARGIE M. WATSON
Mrs. Margie M. Watson, 74, of 137 W. Church Ave. in Wewahitchka, passed away Saturday, July 28, 2001, at her home. She had been a resident of Gulf County for the past 26 years and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wewahitchka. Survivors include her husband, James Watson of Wewahitchka; one son, Terry Lewis and wife, Judy of Carrollton, GA.; her stepchildren, Dee Williams of Atlanta, Jackie Watson of Tallahassee and James Watson Jr. of Wetumpka, Ala.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother and six sisters. The funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. CDT today, July 30, 2001, at graveside in Roberts Cemetery, conducted by Chaplain R.C. Warren. Interment will follow.

ROBERT E. (BOB) CRISPEN
Colonel (Ret.) Robert E. (Bob) Crispen, Rancho Bernardo, San Diego, Calif., passed away Thursday, July 26, 2001, at Pomerado Hospital in Poway, Calif., after a brief illness. Mr. Crispen was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on May 29, 1916, to Grace and Anson L. Crispen. He served his country beginning in World War II and continued to serve active military and civil service until his retirement from CSS in Panama City, Fla., in 1976. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Betty Crispen of San Diego, Calif., his daughters, Toni Crispen (Robert) Banks, of Panama City and Teri J. Crispen (Warren) Titcomb, of Lancaster, Pa. He is also survived by his beloved stepdaughters, Jeanette (Robert) Bates, Debbie Stolz, Renee (Jim) Votel, Elana Slesnick, all of California; and a beloved stepson, Brian Slesnick of Texas. He is also survived by grandchildren Barbara Ann Banks of Cocoa, Fla., and Robert H. Banks Jr. of Newberry, Fla. Memorialization will be by cremation in California.

NATHAN M. 'DICK' MAULDEN
Mr. Nathan M. "Dick" Maulden, 83, of Lynn Haven, Fla., died Monday morning, July 30, 2001, in a local hospital. Born in Opp, Ala., he moved here in 1955 from Atmore, Fla. He was a heavy equipment mechanic with the city of Panama City and was a member of the Springfield Community Church. Mr. Maulden was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army, was a member of the Bay Masonic Lodge No. 337 and was an avid fisherman. His wife, Ethel Maulden, and one son, Billy Maulden, precede him in death. Mr. Maulden is survived by two sons, Jimmy Maulden and wife Patria of Panama City, Fla., and Ray Maulden and wife Peggy of Lake Charles, La.; two daughters, Sandy Williams and husband Charlie and Sherry Park and husband Taft, all of Panama City, Fla.; two brothers, Jessie Maulden and wife Dessie of Vernon, Fla., and Pete Maulden and wife Jo of Live Oak, Fla.; two sisters, Mary Davis of Davisville, Fla., and Willie Mae Godwin of Fort Morgan, Ala.; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the Southerland Family Home Chapel with the Rev. Carl Curti and the Rev. Andrew Danley officiating. Interment will follow in Garden of Memories. The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers, Curtis Maulden, Chris Maulden, Brad Picard, Charlie Williams, Taft Park and Todd Wolfrom. Honorary pallbearers will be all Master Masons. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Nealon Sr., age 69, of Lynn Haven, Fla.., who passed away Friday, July 27, 2001, will be held at 10 a.m. today, July 31, 2001, at St. Dominic's Catholic Church with Father Peter Zalewski officiating. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. today at Fort Barrancas National Cemetery with full military honors conducted by Eglin Air Force Base Honor Guard.

LILLIAN H. NELSON
Mrs. Lillian H. Nelson, age 81, of Mexico Beach, Fla., passed away Sunday, July 29, 2001. She was a native of Chicago, Ill., and had lived in Mexico Beach for 21 years. She loved reading and enjoyed mystery stories the most. She will be missed and remembered as a loving wife and mother. She is survived by her husband Arthur; a daughter, Sharon; a son Ronald; a sister, Wanda; four grandchildren, Amy, Tania, Chantel and Kyle; and other relatives and friends. The funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at 10 a.m. CDT at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Panama City with the Rev. Wesley Toncre officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. She will lie in state at the Comforter Funeral Home from 6 until 8 p.m. EDT today, July 31.

GRADY PLAYER
Mr. Grady Player, 73, of Port St. Joe died Sunday, July 29, 2001, after a long and complicated illness. Mr. Player had lived in Port St. Joe all but two years of his life. Those two years were spent serving in the Army during the Korean Conflict. After returning home from his tour of duty in the Army he was employed by the St. Joe Paper Company and retired after 43 years. He was a charter member and deacon of the Long Avenue Baptist Church. After retiring from the paper company he found much pleasure in having more time for service in his church and also in the hobby of woodworking. Mr. Player is survived by his wife, Katherine; son, David of Port St. Joe; and daughter, Marsha of Tallahassee; four grandchildren, Greg and Chrisley Conger, Jeff and Becky Player all of Tallahassee; two brothers, Ralph of Port St. Joe and James of Cantonment; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. EDT today, July 31, 2001, at Long Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. John Adkins officiating. Interment will follow at Holly Hill Cemetery. Asked to serve as active pallbearers are Greg and Chrisley Conger, Jeff Player, Chris York, Russell Chason and Willie Ramsey. Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of Long Avenue Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Tallahassee Memorial Extended Care in care of Tallahassee Memorial Hospital Foundation, 1331 E. Sixth Ave., Tallahassee, FL 32308.

Mrs. Florence Burgess, 90, of Bonifay, Fla., passed away Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at Mariner Health Care of Bonifay. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Joel Burgess and brothers, Merle and Aubie Tharpe. She is survived by one daughter, Celedia B. Howell and husband, Frederic L. of Bonifay; two granddaughters, Pamela H. McCullough and husband, Ricky of Chipley and Melinda H. McDaniel of Tallahassee; three great-grandchildren, Blair T. McDaniel of Tallahassee, T.J. and Celedia Emma "Emi" McCullough both of Chipley. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3 in Bonifay City Cemetery with the Rev. Jerry Chumley officiating. The family will receive friends at Peel Funeral Home today, Aug. 2, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Northwest of Florida.
