JOHN D. LEE SR.
Mr. John D. Lee Sr., 80, of Port St. Joe, Fla., passed away on Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, in Gulf Pines Hospital. Born in Spears, Ala., he moved to Port St. Joe in 1947. He worked as millwright for St. Paper Company and was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Port St. Joe. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the machinist's mate union. Mr. Lee is survived by his wife, Jeanette Lee of Port St. Joe, Fla.; one son, John D. Lee Jr. and wife Peggy of White City, Fla.; two daughters, Marieta Simmons and husband Paul of Pensacola, Fla., Joan Tharp and husband Clifford of Telogia, Fla.; four brothers, Olvin Lee, Jackey Lee, Paul Lee and Larry Lee; three sisters, Eloise, Patricia and Johnnie Mae; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at 10 a.m. EDT in the Pentecostal Holiness Church. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. in Shady Grove Cemetery in Jackson County. Mr. Lee's nephews will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. EDT.

DOYLE BURL LASTER SPENCE
Mr. Doyle Burl Laster Spence was born March 22, 1931, and died at his home at 337 Leila Ave. in Callaway, Fla., on Sept. 29, 2001. His mother, Matilda Spence, passed away in 1987 and his father, Bullie Spence, passed away in 1961. Also, his son-in-law, Randall Earl Andrews, passed away in 1994. He is survived by his wife of 471/2 years, Mrs. Lucretia Spence of Panama City; three children, Debra Renee Kelsay and husband Ronald, Doyle Wayne Spence and wife Angie, and Glenda Marie Andrews and her boyfriend Herman L. Self Jr., all of Panama City, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Randall Gordon Andrews, Christopher Earl Andrews, Ronald Doyle, Lewis Kelsay, Justina Marie Kelsay, Austin Christopher, Wayne Spence; stepgrandaughter, Jayne Marie Andrews and stepgrandson Dennis Eugene Hennessee; one sister; Voncile J.Stephens; brother-in-law; James H. Campbell; and two wonderful nieces, Pam Morrison and husband Richard and Linda Dasher and husband Sam. Doyle loved helping people. He also loved fishing, hunting and spending his time reading his Bible. Doyle worked for 37 years for the papermill until his retirement. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army serving two years. He will be missed by his family and friends very much. Funeral services for Mr. Spence will be held today, Oct. 2, 2001 at 10 a.m. in the Red Bay Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Randall Kuhn officiating. Interment will follow in the Red Bay Cemetery. military honors will be accorded at graveside. The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Randall Gordon Andrews, Christopher Earl Andrews, Ronald Doyle Lewis Kelsay, Austin Christopher Wayne Spence, James C.Adkison and Ramon McDonald. The family would like to thank Hospice of the Emerald Coast for all the wonderful care and Dr. William Dent, and to all our caring friends during his illness.

LEON BRAXTON (BRAGG) SPIRES
Leon Braxton (Bragg) Spires, 75, of 334 S. Palo Alto Ave., Panama City, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at his home. He had been a resident of Bay County since 1949 moving here from Barbour County, Ala. He was a retired terminal manager for Motor Fuel Carriers. He was a deacon of First Bapist Church of Panama City and a Sunday School member of the Ed Grant Sunday School Class, a charter member of the Civitan Club and a charter member of the St. Andrew Bay Center. Mr. Spires is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Beaty Spires of Panama City; two sons, Leon Beaty Spires of Panama City, Paul P. Spires and his wife Judy of Panama City Beach; a daughter, Diane Maurice Luckenbach and her husband Don; granddaughter, Olivia Diane Luedecke and her husband Jeff, all of Atlanta, Ga.; and a sister, Marguerite Taylor of Montgomery, Ala. He was preceded in death by two brothers, John Frank Spires, Hubert Spires; and three sisters, Irene Hurst, Bessie Dunn and Jane Shirley. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Craig Conner and the Rev. Bruce Raley officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 5-7 p.m. Those desiring may make a contribution to the Building Fund of First Baptist Church in memory of Bragg Spires.

Funeral services for Warren "Russ" Barnes Sr. of Panama City, Fla., who passed away on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. MICHAEL R. DALLAS
Michael R. Dallas, of County Road 22A, Panama City, Fla., formerly of Pennsylvania, died Wednesday in Bay Medical Center, Panama City, Fla. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of Mary D. (McGarvey) Dallas, Perkiomenville, Pa., and the late Joseph E. Dallas. He was self-employed in maintenance. He was a veteran of U.S. Army serving as a sergeant and paratrooper in Vietnam. During Vietnam, he earned two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star and an Army Commendation Medal for Heroism. He is survived by his mother; a daughter, Johanna Achtert, Drexel, Hill, Pa.; nine brothers, Joseph, Pottstown, Pa., John, Longview, Wash., Leo, Pottstown, Pa., Thomas, Perkiomenville, Pa., James, Pottstown, Pa.,Timothy, Pennsburg, Pa., Steven and Edward, both of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Robert, Bethlehem, Pa.; six sisters, Denise Doto, Boyertown, Pa., Theresa Undercoffler, East Greenville, Pa., Mary Kauffman, Boyertown, Pa., Kathy Morcrette, Barto, Pa., Susan Leister, East Greenville, Pa., Patricia Dallas, Perkiomenville, Pa.; and a granddaughter, Jacqueline Achtert, Drexel Hill, Pa. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. today, Oct. 3, 2001, at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, 1325 Klinerd Road, Pennsburg, Pa. Interment will be private. Friends and relatives may call from 9 to 10:45 a.m. this morning at the church. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, 1325 Klinerd Road, Pennsburg, PA 18073 or to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, 800 High St., Pottstown, PA, 19464. The Mann-Slonaker Funeral Home, 222 Washington St., East Greenville, Pa., is in charge of the arrangements.

EDGAR RAY DURDEN
Edgar Ray Durden, beloved husband and father, passed from this life on Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, to be with his Heavenly Father. Born in Enterprise, Ala., on Nov. 8, 1942, he later moved to and became a lifelong resident of Panama City. There he met and married his wife, Doris, of 40 years. Ed's passions were fishing and working in his bountiful garden. He was a bus driver for Bay District Schools Transportation Department where he was loved and admired by many students and parents. He was taken much too soon for someone so generous and kind, but showed courage and selflessness in the face of his illness. He was also a member of St. Andrew's Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Doris; his father, Louie Durden; one son, Paul Durden and wife Julie, one daughter, Belinda Gunter and husband, Gary; four brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Barbara Goodwin, Fred and Nancy Goodwin, Charlotte and Jerry Joiner, Wayne and Terrie Goodwin. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at 4 p.m. in the Southerland Family Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dewey Davidson officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Family and friends will be gathering at the home of his son, Paul Durden, 114 Foxridge Road, Panama City, Fla.

Mrs. Jane M. Swope, age 64, of Youngstown, Fla., passed away Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at a local hospital. She has been a resident of the area since 1991, coming here from Missouri. Mrs. Swope is survived by her husband, Leon Swope of Youngstown, Fla.; two sons, Dean Robb of Fayetteville, Ark., and Charles Swope of Warsaw, Mo.; a daughter, Sean Gooch of Springfield, Mo.; and three grandchildren, Charles Gooch, Paul Gooch, and Charles Swope. Memorialization will be by cremation.

WILLIAM D. 'BILLY' FERRELL JR.
Mr. William D. "Billy" Ferrell Jr., 34, of Panama City Beach, Fla., passed away Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at a local hospital. A native of Miami, Fla., he had been a resident of the area for 22 years. Mr. Ferrell was a 1984 Mosley graduate and a former Mr. Panama City bodybuilding champion. He is survived by his wife, Carrie Ferrell of Panama City Beach, Fla.; his father, William "Bill" Ferrell of Marianna, Fla.; his mother, Barbara Ferrell of Panama City, Fla.; a brother, Randy Ferrell of Panama City, Fla.; his maternal grandmother, Angela Crook of Rogers City, Mich.; two cousins, a niece, a nephew, and numerous aunts and uncles. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Raley officiating.
