Colan Eugene White Sr., 65, of 3305 East 2nd Court, Springfield passed away Thursday October 11, 2001. He was a retired supply boat captain. He was also known as Mr. Karaoke. He is preceded in death by his mother Stella Bruce and his father Ransom White. He is survived by his wife Roseann White; his sister, Betty White; his son, Colan E. White Jr.; many nieces and nephews; three grandchildren, Colan White III, Kimberly White and Ashley White of Pensacola, Fla. He will be missed by many and will be singing karaoke in heaven. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. today. Graveside services will be held Monday at 12:30 p.m. at Fort Barrancas National Cemetery, Pensacola, Fla. In lieu of flowers, the family request that contributions be made to the funeral home, to help with the funeral expenses.

Mrs. Patricia Ruth Galle, 75, of Daleville, Ala., died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at the Enterprise Medical Center in Enterprise, Ala. Mrs. Galle was born Aug. 22, 1926, in Callaway, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard Coon and Maida Grant Coon. Mrs. Galle was a homemaker and of the Methodist faith. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Bennie Coon; and sister, Mary Carolyn Girard. She is survived by her husband, Wilbert Douglas Galle, Minnesota; sons, Joel Galle, Orlando, Fla., Michael Galle, Ashford, Ala., Brian Galle, Daleville, Ala.; a sister, Leslie Galle Ward, Auburn, Ala.; grandchildren, Nathan Galle, Shalane Galle, Hannah Galle, Lyra Galle and Allison Galle; several cousins, nieces and nephews. Visitation for Mrs. Galle will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at Kent-Thornton Funeral Home. A private memorial service will be held at a later date by the family.

Funeral services for Huey Virgel Lumley Sr., 78, of 1106 W. 12th Court, Panama City, who died Friday, October 12, 2001, in his home, will be held today at 10:30 a.m. in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Adolph Bedsole, Dr. Jerry Moore, and Chaplain Ron L'Huillier officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Those desiring to may make a contribution to Hospice of the Emerald Coast, Gideons International, or the American Cancer Society in memory of Mr. Lumley. Active pallbearers are Ryan Buschmeyer, Casey Buschmeyer, Forrest Lumley, Martin Stanley, Gary Certalich, and Wayne George. Honorary pallbearers are Rodney Barnes, Carl Moody, Travis Whitman, John Parrish Sr., Andy Amann, Sonny McIver, Johnny Thompson, Roy Breedon, Dr. Ketan Patel, members of the St. Andrew Masonic Lodge No. 212, the Andy Amann Sunday School Class of Northside Baptist Church, and employees of Hospice of the Emerald Coast.

Ruby Lee Nash, 92, of Panama City Beach, died Saturday, October 13, 2001, in a local nursing home. She had been a resident of Panama City Beach for the past 3 1/2 years, moving here from Austell, Ga. She attended the Gulf Beach Baptist Church. She is survived by two sons, James W. Nash and his wife, Joan, of Panama City Beach, John C. Nash and his wife, Beverly, of Mableton, Ga.; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m EST in the Mount Harmony Baptist Church, Mableton, Ga. Interment will follow in the Westview Cemetery, Atlanta, Ga. The family will receive friends at the Davis-Struemph Funeral Home, Austell, Ga., from 4 to 8 p.m. today.

Mrs. Allene V. Robbins, 77, of Shay Lynn Court, Orlando, Fla., passed away, Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at an Orlando health-care facility. Born in Holmes County, Fla., she moved to this area in the 1940s and was employed at the Dixie Sherman Hotel until she opened her own business. Mrs. Robbins was the owner and operator of the Sea-n-Ski Motel and resturant in Panama City until 1994 when she retired to Orlando. She attended Gulfview United Methodist Church. Allene is preceded in death by her husband, parents and her brother, Luther who passed away in 1994. She is survived by her son, Mike Robbins and wife, Cheryl of Orlando, Fla.; daughter, Bonnie Robbins-Johnson and husband, Ross, of Montevallo, Ala.; and three grandchildren. Graveside services for Mrs. Robbins will be held today, Oct. 15, 2001, at noon in Greenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Si Matyhison officiating.

Mrs. Juanita G. Whatley, age 78, of Panama City, Fla., died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, in a local nursing home. Born in Pensacola, Fla., she moved here in 1956 from Pensacola. She worked at the Miracle Mile Resort for several years. Two daughters, Gail Odom and Gerald Anita Whatley; a grandson, Walter Barber; and a great-granddaughter, Brandy Mayo, precede her in death. Mrs. Whatley is survived by four children, Barbara Nichols of Fountain, Fla.; Hewey Whatley of Panama City, Fla., Joyce Barber and husband James of the Sandhills, Earlene Crooms and husband Bud of Fountain, Fla.; grandchildren, Carl and Cathy Nichols, Kenny and Toni Nichols, Anita Hewett, Lynn and John Lynch, Robert and Lorie, Callie Becker, Laura Whatley, Carol and Glenn Bishop, Brenda and Steve Rhodes, Debra and Jr. Ivey, Charles Mayo, Kevin and Dana Upshaw, Lisa Vickery, Thomas Wade and Brandy Odom; 28 great-grandchildren; and one great great-grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at 1 p.m. in the Southerland Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Floyd Wright officiating. Interment will follow in the Sandhills Community Cemetery. The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Dewey Whatley, Wayne White, Alan White, Charles Mayo, Kevin Upshaw and Jr. Ivey. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening from 6 to 8 p.m.

Earl Mitchell "HIP" LaFrance, A disabled veteran, died Tuesday, Oct. 2 , 2001, at 11 p.m. in New Orleans, La., in the Hospice Hospital. He was 64. Survivors include a loving wife, Mrs. Gloria J. LaFrance; and six devoted and loving children, Deborah J. Pope (Nathan) of Moreno Valley, Calif., Earl M. LaFrance II, who proceed him in death, Cynthia L. Hart, Letrice Anderson, DeAna Fate (Johnny Lee Jr.) and Iwana Comer (Greg); 16 grandchildren; five great-grands all of Panama City, except Nathan (Chantel), of Atlanta, Ga . He also leaves a host of friends and family here in Panama City and also in New Orleans, La. His surviving family in New Orleans include six brothers: George, Lester, Wallace, Raymond, August and Douglas of (Rhode Island) and a host of caring and dedicated nieces and nephews. Prentiss D. Melder of 2425 Pretty Bayou Dr., Panama City, Fla., was born Nov. 7, 1926, and died Oct. 15, 2001, at his home. He had been a resident here since 1955, moving here from Cordele, Ga., and was a native of Glenmora-Melder, La. He was a graduate of Troy State University, Ala., and Auburn University, Ala. He was a music educator in Bay County and a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church. He taught at least ten thousand students during his 46 years of teaching. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Plant Melder; two sons, Mark and his wife, Stephanie, of Lynn Haven, Mike and his wife, Ann; four granddaughters, Linsey, Lesley, Elizabeth, and Jennifer and great-granddaughter, Audrey, all of Tallahassee; three sisters, Mrs. Yvonne Ingram and her husband, Grady, Mrs. Melba Rhame and Mrs. Mary Lou Davis, all of Panama City; one brother, Jesse H. Melder Jr., of Arlington, Texas; and a stepsister, Mrs. Betty Meacham of Columbus, Ga. Memorial services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Bob McSpadden and Fred Sale officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Mr. Melder's wish, in lieu of flowers, was that a donation be made to the Music Department Scholarship Fund at Gulf Coast Community College, or the Music Department at Rutherford High School.

Mr. Paul T. Phillips, age 65, of Panama City, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at Bay Medical Center. Mr. Phillips owned U.S. PolyCon Corp., which manufactured insulation for underground steam piping systems throughout the United States. Born in 1936 in Buffalo, N.Y., and raised in Quincy, Mass., he was the son of Morris and Dorothy (Wagner) Phillips. He graduated from State University College of Technology at Delhi, N.Y, in 1959. He also served in the U.S. Navy. He had lived in Panama City since 1987. Mr. Phillips is survived by his children, Bruce Phillips of Lowell, Mass., and Tracy England of Trabuco Canyon, Calif.; his sister, Lois Straffin, and her husband, Richard, of Rochester, Mass.; and his former wife, Edna May Meserve of Raynham, Mass. He is also survived by his former wife, Kathleen Vance of Panama City. Mr. Phillips continued his formal education in recent years, graduating in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in social science from Florida State University. A passionate advocate of Constitutional freedoms and critic of U.S. government policies, he frequently shared his views in letters published on The News Herald's editorial page. Mr. Phillips loved water skiing and competed in tournaments up and down the East Coast for nearly three decades. He could often be found skiing or behind the wheel of his boats on Deerpoint Lake. An observance in his memory is being held privately.

Ethel Webb "Stripling" Poche, passed away Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at her home. She was born in Walton County and has resided in Port St. Joe for the past 111/2 years. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her son, James Malcolm Stripling. Ms. Poche is survived by her children, Shirley Walden of Port St. Joe, Charles Bryan Stripling of Pace, Levon Maurice Stripling of Port St. Joe and Sarah Elizabeth (Beth) Stripling of Pinellas Park; one brother, Wilmer Earle Webb of Corpus Christi, Texas; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The viewing will be held at Comforter Funeral Home today, Oct. 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. ET. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at Elizabeth Chapel Cemetery near Pace.

James Leslie Van Elsen, age 72, died, Aug. 23, 2001, at 1:10 a.m. of lung cancer. Jim passed away only 33 days after being diagnosed with his illness. He was living in Panama City Beach, Fla., with his wife Helen. Jim and Helen just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in May 2001.

Funeral services for Mrs. Juanita G. Whatley, 78, of Panama City, will be held today, Oct. 16, 2001, at 1 p.m. in Southerland Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Floyd Wright officiating. Interment will follow in Sandhills Community Cemetery. The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Dewey Whatley, Wayne White, Alan White, Charles Mayo, Kevin Upshaw and Jr. Ivey.

Mr. James T. Culpepper, 82, of Lynn Haven, Fla., passed away Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at a local hospital. He had been a resident of the area for 32 years, coming here from Albany, Ga. Mr. Culpepper was a builder and developer. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He also was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite Temple, and the York Rite Temple. Mr. Culpepper was a Presbyterian elder for 44 years and a member of the Gulf Beach Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Hazel Davis Culpepper, of Lynn Haven, Fla.; a son, James Thomas Culpepper IV and his wife, Anne W. of Panama City Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Marie C. Norton of Panama City Beach; two grandchildren, James Thomas Culpepper V of Burlington, Kan., and Anne-Marie Clark and her husband, Lee C. of Mt. Dora, Fla.; three great-grandchildren, Brittany Culpepper and Alexis and Zachary Clark; a special nephew, Bill Reaves and his wife, Nancy; and a special niece, Hazel Robinson and her husband, Rob. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Bill Norton. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at the Gulf Beach Presbyterian Church with Dr. Kenneth Churchill and Dr. John Deason officiating. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery. Asked to serve as active pallbearers are Bill Headley, Bill Holt, Bill Reaves, Craig Reeves, Todd Reaves, and Mike Thomas. Honorary pallbearers will include: Members of Crew of LSM 460, Ross Gatlin, Joe Hauser, Jesse Lathan, Hill Mauldin, Gene Miekle, Jim Murphy, Ted Neal, Louie Porter, Dewey Reaves, Will Seltzer, Bill Stone, and Bob Thomas.
