RUTH C. HEMPHILL
Mrs. Ruth C. Hemphill, 79, of Panama City, passed away Nov. 21, 2001, at her home. She was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., and had lived in Panama City for 23 years. She was a homemaker and a U.S. Army Air Corps Veteran of World War II. Mrs. Hemphill was a member of Emmaus United Methodist Church. She loved sewing and quilting, and was a member of the Quilter's Guild. She also was the former mayor of Adiar Village, Ore. Mrs. Hemphill was preceded in death by a son, Roy Hemphill, in August 2001. Survivors include her husband, Jack Hemphill, of Panama City; one daughter, Charlotte Bright and husband, Jack, of Panama City; one brother, Donald Offen of Erie, Pa.; a sister, Lillian Cassidy and husband, George, of Glenshaw, Pa., a stepgranddaughter, Donna Crews and husband, Bill, of Salem, Ala.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at the Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Hankins officiating. Interment followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home, Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Mrs. Hemphill's name to the Emmaus United Methodist Church Building Fund.

THOMAS L. OLIVER
Thomas L. Oliver, 82, of Panama City, Fla., died Nov. 22, 2001, at Glencove Nursing Pavilion after a brief illness. Mr. Oliver was born in Superior, Wis., Sept. 5, 1919. He was a retired ironworker and worked most of his career with Building Trades, Inc. in Duluth, Minn. In Panama City, he was a member of St. Dominic's Catholic Church. His wife, Eleanor Ryan Oliver, preceded him in death. Survivors include a son, Keenan Oliver, of Rochester, N.Y., and a granddaughter, Kiyomi Oliver, also of Rochester, N.Y. His stepdaughter is Joanne Cox of Panama City, Fla. Other survivors include two brothers, James Oliver and his wife, Betty, and Joseph Oliver and his wife, Ella, all of Superior, Wis.; two sisters, Mary Hunter of Cleveland, Ohio, and Sister Elizabeth Oliver of Milwaukee, Wis. He also is survived by four nieces, Mary Joan Oliver, Carol Ann Oliver, Patricia Oliver and Susan Oliver; and four nephews, Joseph Oliver Jr., James Oliver, David Oliver and Thomas Hunter. Private graveside services were held in the Catholic Cemetery.

ROBERT IRWIN TUCKER
Funeral services for Robert Irwin Tucker, 88, of 923 Oak Ave., Panama City, who died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Mans officiating. Masonic services will be conducted after the service by the St. Andrew Masonic Lodge. Graveside services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. EST in the Bonaventure Cemetery Greenwich Addition, Savannah. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. today. Those desiring to may make a contribution to your favorite charity in memory of Robert Tucker.

BENTON D. BOWEN
Benton D. Bowen, 70, of Fairfield Bay, Ark., died Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, in his daughter's home in Panama City. He was a retired staff sergeant in the U.S. Army and a retired truck driver. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Bowen. He is survived by two daughters, Cindy Huebner of Panama City, Sherry Bowen of Columbia, Tenn.; son, David Bowen of Hillsboro, Ore.; five brothers, Wayne Bowen of Iowa, Harry Bowen, Donny Bowen, Billy Bowen, all of Michigan, and Floyd Bowen of Arkansas; two sisters, Corena Webster, Marjorie Mitchell, both of Michigan; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. in the Roller Citizens Funeral Home Chapel, Marianna, Ark., with Pastor Jim Ragland officiating. Interment will follow in the McCurley Cemetery, Blackton, Ark.

BEATRICE S. CAVELLI
Beatrice S. Cavelli, 96, of Parker, Fla., died Nov. 26, 2001, at a local nursing home. Mrs. Cavelli was born Sept. 28, 1905, in Stoutland, Mo., and grew up in La Junta, Colo. The first in her family to go to college, she earned a lifetime teaching certificate from Colorado Teachers College in Greeley (now University of Northern Colorado) and had graduated in 1941 from Boston University with a B.S. in education. She taught elementary grades in Colorado, the Panama Canal Zone in Central America, where she married Charles Cavelli Jr., colonel, U.S. Army, who preceded her in death in 1989 and was proceeded by four sisters. She enjoyed travel, playing bridge, piano, and had an active social life. She is survived by two daughters, Susan Kimball and her husband, Kim, of Panama City, Nora Cavelli of Denver, Colo.; three grandsons, Charles F. (Carl) Kimball and wife, Shannon, John Kimball and wife, Joy, Nathaniel Kimball; and two great-grandchildren, Matthew Kimball and Morgan Kimball. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Raley officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday. Graveside funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the Fort Barrancas National Cemetery, Pensacola, Fla. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Memorial Fund of First Baptist Church of Panama City in memory of Beatrice Cavelli.

DORIS M. FITZGERALD
Mrs.Doris M. Fitzgerald, 62, of Panama City, Fla., passed away Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at her home. She had been a resident of the area for 15 years, coming here from Pinebrook, N.J. Mrs. Fitzgerald was a housewife and homemaker who enjoyed her grandchildren and all of her family. She was Catholic by faith. Mrs. Fitzgerald is survived by her husband, Frank A. Fitzgerald, of Panama City, Fla.; a daughter, Laura A. Boucher of Panama City, Fla.; two stepsons, Scott Fitzgerald of Lake Hopatcong, N.J., and Robert Fitzgerald of Pace, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Cheryl Hagelund of Anchorage, Alaska, and Marion Lowe of Panama City, Fla.; two brothers, Francis G. Bertrand of Randolph, N.J., and Charles Leo Bertrand of Pinebrook, N.J.; a sister, Janet Theresa Van Hook of Bath, Pa.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Graveside funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at Evergreen Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Dan Estes officiating. Interment will follow. The family will receive friends at the Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home today, Nov. 28, 2001, from 6 to 8 p.m.

LISA MICHELLE GAY
Miss Lisa Michelle Gay, 39, of 6509 Lakeshore Drive, Panama City, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, in an Atlanta Hospital. Miss Gay was a lifelong resident of Bay County and was a nursing assistant for 15 years for Drs. Stephen M. Smith and Stephen G. Smith. She was Baptist by faith. She is survived by her parents, Mr. Jim H. and Alice Gay of Panama City, Fla.; one brother, Mr. Jim M. Gay of Stockbridge, Ga.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Miss Gay also was the grandaughter of the late Felix M. and Lorayne Gay and Walter W. and Alma B. Green. Funeral services will be conducted today, Nov. 28, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the Southerland Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Claude Turner officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The following gentlemen will serve as active pallbearers: Marvin Gay, Marion Gay, Jeremy Whitworth, Ron Dickerson, Stephen Raisbeck, Charles Green, Ricky Green and Art Green. Honorary pallbearers will be Charlie Buckles, Dr. Stephen G. Smith, Gayle Hartzog, Gary Dorman, Benton Dorman, Fred Snellgrove, Bruce Buckles and Al Hartzog.

Bertha Robinson Middleton, 86, of Quincy, Fla., died Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, in Quincy. She had lived in Panama City from 1948 until 1987 when she moved to Quincy. She owned and operated West Florida Plant and Trees Nursery. The service will be 2 p.m. CST Thursday, Nov. 27, at Cope Funeral Home in Evergreen, Ala., with burial at Robinson Family Cemetery in Paul, Ala. Survivors include spouse, Ben Middleton, of Quincy; five sons, Benton Middleton of Louisville, Ky., David Middleton of Pensacola, Marcus and Roger Middleton both of Quincy and Thomas Middleton of Louisville; a brother, Olan Robinson of Pensacola; one sister, Velma Worrells of Mobile; and three grandchildren. Independent Funeral Home of Quincy, Fla., is in charge of the arrangements, 850-875-1529.

Rodney Charles Taylor of Gravity, Iowa, died Thanksgiving Day following an extended illness. He is survived by his wife, Debra, of Gravity; and his mother, Myrle P. Strother, of Panama City; four stepsons, Joe, Kelly, Jamie and Eric Baker; two stepsisters, Helen Dunkle and Sandra Hudson. A memorial service will be held in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday at 11 a.m. with Father David Mans officiating.
