LUCIUS POPE JR. Lucius Pope Jr., 76, of Panama City, Fla., died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, after a lengthy illness in Panama City. Graveside funeral services and burial will be at 11 a.m. (CST) on Thursday, Feb. 12, 2002, at Pope Cemetery in Sneads. The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. CST at the Lanier-Andler Funeral Home in Sneads. Pope was a native of Chattahoochee and had lived in Panama City since 1980. He retired as a self-employed carpenter and he was of the Baptist faith. He was also a member of the Serenity Junction Alcoholics Anonymous in Panama City. He also enjoyed playing his favorite game of bingo at Bingo Paradise in Panama City. Survivors include his wife, Hazel Pope, of Panama City; son, Craig Pope and his wife, Nancy, of Sneads; sister, Dorothy Bright, of Sneads; granddaughter, Rachel Dietz, and her husband, David, of Blountstown; and great-grandchildren, Ridge and Braicee Dietz, of Blountstown. Memorial contributions may be made to the Serenity Junction Alcoholics Anonymous, 922 Jenks Ave., Panama City, Fla., 32401.

SARAH THOMPSON SKIPPER Sarah Thompson Skipper, age 88, of Panama City, passed away Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at the Bay Medical Hospital. Sarah lived in Crestview for most of her life before she moved to Panama City 13 years ago. Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie David Skipper; a son, Sam Foster; and a daughter, Ervie Foster. Survivors include one son, Walter Ray Foster; two stepsons, Buddy Foster and Edward Foster ; one daughter, Shirley Skipper Holder and husband, Dusty, of Panama City, Fla.; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; special nieces, Louise and husband, Harold Deese, Sandra and husband, Joe Brock; special nephew, Penny and wife, Helen Brake; special daughter, Paula and husband, Jimmy Barrow; and a host of nieces and nephews. Visitation will be today, Feb. 10, 2002, from 6 to 8 p.m. a t Whitehurst Funeral Home in Crestview, Fla. The funeral will be today, Feb. 11, 2002, at 10 a.m. from the Chapel of Whitehurst Funeral Home in Crestview. Burial will follow at Live Oak Park Memorial Cemetery in Crestview. Whitehurst Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Grave side services for James Lloyd Patterson Sr., age 66, of Springfield, who passed away Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at a local hospital, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 11, 2002, at Evergreen Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jerry Weaver officiating. Interment will follow. Asked to serve as active pallbearers are: Floyd Owens, Dick Hanson, Walter "Bo" Hamm, David Parish, Travis Wade and Tim Miller. GEORGE TANG Funeral services for George Tang, 46, of Lynn Haven, Fla., who died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, in an Arlington, Va., hospital, will be held today at 1 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Panama City with the Rev. Wes Lawson officiating. EDNA CAMPBELL WILKERSON Edna Campbell Wilkerson, of Fountain, Fla., died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, in a local hospital. She was born Feb. 7, 1918, to Charlie Webster Campbell and Emma White Campbell of Paragould, Ark. She had been a resident of Fountain for the past 30 years and was a member of the Fountain Assembly of God Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Herschel Wilkerson; sons, Charles Robert Wilkerson and Guy Wilkerson. She is survived by eight children, Loyd Wilkerson of Sebring, Fla., Leonard Wilkerson and wife, Lois, of Fort Pierce, Fla., DeRetta Henagen and husband, Bill, of Youngstown, Fay Tysinger and husband, Floyd, of Sophia, N.C., Roberta Fountain and husband, George, of Fountain, Brian Wilkerson and wife, Chris, of Connecticut, Denise Sumnitch and husband, Mark, of Wisconsin, Donna Perdue and husband, James, of Parker; 26 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Georgia Sanders and husband, Max, of Anderson, Ind., Juanita Richardson and husband, Dale, of Illinois; and sister-in-law, Melba Campbell, of Anderson. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Terrell Nelson officiating. Interment will follow in the Fountain Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6to 8 p.m. today. Active pallbearers are James T. Hallman, Charles Hallman, Dennis John, Stephen Reynolds, James Perdue and Leonard Wilkerson.

MARGARET 'PEGGY' FLEMING Mrs. Margaret "Peggy" Fleming passed away on Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, in Panama City where she had lived the last 25 years. Peg was a perfect military wife and mother who had set up more than 20 homes throughout the world for her family. She shepherded her family in love and kindness and was an example to all who knew her. Peg is survived by her husband of more than 51 years, Larry; two sons, Col. David Fleming of Brussels, Belgium, and Maj. Patrick Fleming of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and a daughter, Margaret "Missy" McClelland of McLean, Va.; and six grandchildren. Peg is also survived by her mother, Lillian Biddle, of Panama City, who lived with Peg and Larry; as well as a sister, Mary Larson, of Louisville, Ky. Peg was a member of St. Dominic's Catholic Church. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at St. Dominic's Catholic Church with Monsignor Norman Metsy officiating. A reception will follow in the hall of St. Dominic's Church, at which time the family will receive all friends of Peg. Interment will follow at a later date.

THOMAS EDISON FUNK Thomas Edison Funk, 88, of Panama City, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, in his home. He was a 1939 graduate of the University of Michigan. He was born in Jeromeville, Ashland County, Ohio. He moved to Central Florida in 1948 and then to Panama City in March 2001. He was a forest manager and operated a building supply business in Kissimmee for 18 years, then a lawn grass dealership for 13 years. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Kissimmee. He is survived by his wife, Frances of Panama City; a son, James, of Panama City; two brothers, Welker Funk of Reedley, Calif., Hal Gordon Funk of Miamiville, Ohio; and a sister, Gloria Leidigh of Seattle, Wash. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wes Toncre officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

IRIS OPAL HOLMES Iris Opal Holmes, 83, of Panama City, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, in a local hospital. She had been a resident of Bay County since 1982 moving here from Dothan, Ala. She was a retired certified nursing assistant for a nursing home. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church of Dothan. Mrs. Holmes was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Holmes, in 1967. She is survived by two sons, David Holmes and his wife, Martha, of Panama City, Paul Holmes; daughter, Elizabeth Williams and her husband, Dennis, all of Montgomery, Ala.; three grandchildren, Martha Holmes, Sterling Lewis, Brenda Lewis; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Foyette Hallford of DeLand, Fla., James Sevelle Hallford of Casselberry, Fla.; and two sisters, Peggy Hatcher of Hartford, Ala., and Onyx Butler of Macon, Ga. Graveside funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Memory Hills Cemetery of Dothan. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

WILLIAM 'CASEY' JONES Mr. William "Casey" Jones, 76, of Fountain, Fla., passed away Friday, Feb. 9, 2002. He was a resident of the area for 33 years, coming here from Berlin, N.Y. Mr. Jones was a member of AMVETS Fountain Post No. 0231 and enjoyed shooting pool. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps and landed on the island of Tinien with the Fourth Marine Division, then landed on Saipan. On Feb. 19, 1944, he then landed on Iwo Jima and after three days was seriously wounded and returned to the United States to recover. Mr. Jones is survived by his sons, Lester Jones and his wife, Susan, of Melrose, N.Y., Richard Jones of Utica, N.Y., and Jonathan Jones and his wife, Diane, of Malta, N.Y.; daughters, Judith Jones of Albany, N.Y., Mary Sullivan and her husband, Richard, of San Diego, Calif., and Melissa Jones of Troy, N.Y.; a brother, Harold Jones and his wife, Minnie, of Berlin, N.Y.; and a sister, Madelline Henrickson and her husband, Troy, of Troy, N.Y. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Deborah Hoag. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Fountain Assembly of God Church.

COZETTA AUGUSTA PETERSON Mrs. Minnie L. Proctor, 96, of Panama City passed away Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at a local health-care facility. She was born in Georgia and moved to the Panama City area in 1967 from Apalachicola. Minnie was a homemaker, wife, and loving mother who enjoyed life and her family. She was an Episcopalian by faith. Minnie was preceded in death by her mother, father and her husband of 63 years, Clarence W. Proctor. She is survived by four daughters, Alva B. Roberts, Merle P. Cruce and husband, Harvey, Eunice P. Counts, and Shirley P. Batteiger and husband, Bill, all of Panama City; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Graveside services for Mrs. Proctor will be conducted today, Feb. 12, at 1 p.m. in Parker Cemetery with the Rev. John Richardson officiating. Interment will follow.

DANIEL 'CHRIS' BARNHART
Mr. Daniel "Chris" Barnhart, 45, of Panama City Beach, Fla., lost his courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday morning, Feb. 13, 2002. Chris was born on Jan. 27, 1957, in Columbia, Mo. He married Jacquelyn Kay McCrackin of Dec. 26, 1976. Over the past 20 years, Chris was a real estate broker and manager of the Casa Blanca Resort in Panama City Beach. Chris' journey was purposeful and productive and he leaves a significant legacy with his family and community. His compassion for others was a well-recognized gift and his ministry was a conscious extension of peace and love. Chris served as elder of the Gulf Beach Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Optimist Club of the Beaches for the past 10 years and was recognized last year with a lifetime membership award. He was also active in the Beach Soccer League, serving as a coach and league president and was recently honored as the Florida Youth Soccer Volunteer of the Year. He was also a volunteer at Beach Elementary School while his sons were students there. Survivors include his wife, Jackie; sons, Kyle and Brent of Panama City Beach; his parents, Charles and Reba Barnhart of West Plains, Mo.; and three brothers and their wives, Mark and Tammy Barnhart of Bismarck, N.D., Craig and Shirley Barnhart of Houston, Texas, and Paul and Michelle Barnhart of Springfield, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews and extended family members. Chris was preceded in death by his grandparents, Turner and Elsie Barnhart and Vespa McCann. The family extends great appreciation to the staff of M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, and to primary caregivers, Dr. Mahmood, Dr. Albibi, and Dr. Nichols of Panama City, and to their many friends for their loving support. A Witness of the Resurrection Service will be held at 4 p.m. today, Feb. 15, at Gulf Beach Presbyterian Church with Dr. Ken Churchill officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Chris Barnhart Scholarship Fund. Contributions can be mailed to The Optimist Club Foundation, P.O. Box 9259, Panama City Beach, FL 32407.
