BONNIE CAROL TAFT
Bonnie Carol (Vereen) Taft, 64, died Wednesday March 27, 2002, at her home in Inlet Beach in Walton County, Fla. Mrs. Taft was a third generation Floridian born in Perry. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, James P. Taft; her brother, the Rev. Carl Hartford Vereen of Tucson, Ariz.; five children, James P. Taft Jr. of Panama City Beach, Jennifer Kashtan-Kelley of Safety Harbor, Joseph Dwight Taft of Orlando, John Scott Taft of Nashville, William Hartford Taft of Panama City Beach; 11 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Bonnie had so many accomplishments and touched so many people in her journey through life. Just to list some of her many contributions and accomplishments: She was a chairman of the Citrus County Hospital Board, staff member for Gov. Bob Graham, past president of the Upper Pinellas County Democratic Women's Club, founder of Filmore Auditorium in Clearwater, host to many local political events in Pinellas County for the U.S. Senate campaign for Lawton Chiles, alternate then delegate for President Jimmy Carter, lifelong friend to Sen. Claude Pepper, who had at one time shared a common desk with her mother, Merle Vereen of Perry. Among her many attributes, she had a great love for education, history and travel. She earned an AA from Gulf Coast Community College, a B.S. in communications, an M.A in history with high honors from FSU-Panama City Campus, but always remained a loyal and lifelong fan to the University of Florida in Gainesville which she attended just after high school in Taylor County, where she is fondly remembered as head majorette. Additionally; she held a private pilot's license, a real estate license, owned and operated her own restaurant, was a featured writer in the St. Pete Times, Citrus County Chronicle, Panama City News Herald and Southern Magazine. Her travels included trips to China, Brazil, Italy, France, Haiti, the Bahamas and South America. Her favorite hobby was genealogy, where she will be missed as a reliable source for her information on the Taft, Vereen, Jernigan, and Snow colonial families. Regrettably, this fine lady spent the last five months of her life suffering from incurable cancer without the dignity of having the choice to die after a lifetime of fighting for individual rights. She was beautiful, creative, elegant, intelligent, complex, sensitive and oh so loving. She shared a different part of herself with each and everyone of us and though her voice may be quiet, her spirit will remain alive in our hearts forever. She will be so sorely missed. Please send donations, in lieu of flowers, to the Hospice of the Emerald Coast, 700 W. 23rd St., Suite G-59, Panama City, FL 32405.
