CLYDE L. 'SMITTY' SMITH
Mr. Clyde L. "Smitty" Smith, age 81, of Panama City, passed away May 25, 2002, at a local nursing home facility. Mr. Smith was born in Caw City, Okla., and had lived in Bay County since 1968, coming here from Meridian, Miss. Mr. Smith was retired as a master chief after 26 years in the U.S. Navy and was director of public works at Panama City Beach for several years. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, the DAV, Acme Masonic Lodge No. 222 where he was past master, the order of the Eastern Star, Scottish Rite, the Shaddai Shrine Temple and the Hiland Park United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Smith, of Panama City; a daughter, Barbara Bell, and her husband, David, of Jacksonville; a son, Jesse Smith, of Wilson, N.C.; stepson, Mike Douglas, and his wife, Linda, of Panama City; a daughter-in-law, Alice Sumner, of Panama City; his grandchildren, James Bell, Joey Smith, Kathryn McMasters, Sherry Bell, Tammy Green, Dewey Sumner, Kim Woodell and Shane Collier; his great-grandchildren, Corey McMasters, Amanda McMasters, Brian Green, Dakota Woodell, Cole Collier, Heather Bell and Savannah Sumner; four sisters, Louise Lange of Sedan, Kan., Betty Moore, of Washington State, Barbara Moody, of Washington State and Clyda Milks, of Fort Worth, Texas; sisters-in-law, Abbie Strickland, of Wimauma, Fla., Margaret Hall, of Lakeland, Fla., and Marjorie Vassie, of Panama City; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at the Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ray Bass and the Rev. Harry Johnson officiating. Interment will follow with full military honors and Ma-sonic rites at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Asked to serve as active pallbearers are: Fred Wilcox, John Weidenhaft, J.T. Windham, Gary Townsend, Howard Hartzog and Hubert Gilmore. Honorary pallbearers will include: John Meeks, Curtis Bond, members of the Eastern Star, all Masons, Dorothy Francis and the members of his Sunday school class. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday, May 27, 2002, from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Hiland Park United Methodist Church, 2420 East Baldwin Road, Panama City, FL 32405.

HARVEY C. BRAND
Pastor Harvey C. Brand, 55, of Panama City, Fla., made a touchdown in Glory on Sunday, May 26, 2002. Pastor Brand had been a resident of Bay County for 14 years, moving here from Enterprise, Ala. He was a pastor with ActZion Ministries for five years. Pastor Brand is survived by his mother, Janece Brand of Enterprise, Ala.; his wife, Karen Brand of Panama City; five daughters, Elizabeth Fulton and husband, Adam, of Chattanooga, Tenn., Holley Aaron and husband, Preston, of Columbus, Ga., Michelle Sellick and husband, David, of Crawfordville, Fla., Melissa Poston of Anson, Texas, and Melanie Kay DeRamus and husband, Anthony, of Panama City; one brother, the Rev. Eddie Brand and wife, Kathryn, of Baldwin, La.; one sister, Martha Lou Speer and husband, Tom, of Littleton, Colo.; four grandchildren, Cody Aaron, Andrew Sellick, Charis Sellick and Jared Sellick; two nieces, Karece Brand and Sue Brand; and three nephews, John Brand, Eric Speer and John Speer. Funeral services for Pastor Brand will be conducted Thursday, May 30, at 10 a.m. in Faith Christian Fellowship Church with the Rev. Tim Bradshaw and the Rev. Tony Slay officiating. Interment will follow in Meadowlawn Cemetery in Enterprise, Ala. The following gentlemen will serve as active pallbearers, David Sellick, James Jurena, Ron Lindaman, Anthony DeRamus, John Brand and Al Strickland. The family will receive friends this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

ROBERT LAMAR CHAFFIN
Robert Lamar Chaffin, 73, of Panama City, died Monday, May 27, 2002, in a local hospital. He was born July 5, 1928, in Atlanta, Ga. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a graduate of Georgia State University, Columbia University, and received his master's and doctorate degree from the University of Chicago. He was professor emeritus at Georgia State University, where he taught economics and corporate finance for 32 years. He was a member of the Chicago Alumni Association, the St. Bedes Episcopal Church in Chamblee, Ga., and attended the St. Andrew Episcopal Church in Panama City. He had been a resident of Panama City since 1996, moving here from Stone Mountain, Ga. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Phyllis Laird Chaffin of Panama City; daughter, Sharrie Mack and her husband, Brian; grandson, Brandan Mack, all of Marietta, Ga.; and numerous cousins in Henry County, Ga. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Roy E. McLuen and Father Monty Gideon officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. today.

JOAN CLOUTIER
Mrs. Joan Cloutier, 67, of Paradise Lakes, passed away Monday, May 27, 2002, at her home. She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., and had lived in the area since 1988, moving here from Dover, Del. Mrs. Cloutier had been a civil service employee and loved dollmaking and arts and crafts. She is survived by her husband, Ron Cloutier of Paradise Lakes; three sons, Michael, Raymond, and Douglas; one daughter, Jeanette; one brother, John; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 31, at the Garden of Memories Chapel with Father Francis officiating. The family will receive friends at the chapel Thursday, May 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. A special thanks to the staff at Gulf Coast Community Hospital and Covenant Hospice. THOMAS 'BUDDY' S. GAFF
Mr. Thomas "Buddy" S. Gaff, 69, of Cedar Grove, died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at his residence. He had been a lifelong resident of Bay County and was a retired mechanic. Mr. Gaff served in the United States Army. He is preceded in death by three sons, Gregory Gaff, Terry Gaff and Brian Gaff. Mr. Gaff is survived by his wife, Malvena P. Gaff of Panama City; two sons, Larry Gaff and wife, Debbie, of Bay St. Louis, Miss., and Tim Gaff and wife, Cathy, of Picayune, Miss.; four daughters, Sherrie Diliberto of Picayune, Miss., Darlene Smith and husband, Michael, of Inverness, Fla., Julie Smith and Diane Gaff, both of Picayune, Miss.; two brothers, Cecil Gaff and wife, Marie, of Honolulu, Hawaii, Richard Gaff and Roger Dorch and wife, Kathy, all of Panama City; four sisters, Betty Powell and husband, Dolan, of Bay County, Rose Riggs and husband, Larry, of Waco, Texas, Nell Emanuel and husband, John, of Panama City, and JoAnn Record and husband, Louis, of Bay County; 23 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mr. Gaff will be conducted Thursday, May 30, 2002, at 10 a.m. in the Southerland Family Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Jerry Guynn officiating. The following gentlemen will serve as active pallbearers, Larry Gaff, Tim Gaff, Jimmy Gaff, Matt Powell, Darrell Kinsey and Anthony Diliberto. Interment will follow in Millville Cemetery. TIMOTHY GENE GAHAN
Timothy Gene Gahan, formerly of Birmingham, Ala., died suddenly at his home in Lynn Haven, Fla., May 25, 2002. He was born Dec. 9, 1963, in Atlanta, Ga., and grew up in Birmingham. He was employed in the food service business for 18 years and with U.S. Food Service/PYA/Monarch Inc. of Montgomery, Ala., for the past five years. He is survived by his wife, Sheila Jacobs Gahan of Lynn Haven; and one daughter, Lindsey Blair Gahan of Birmingham; two children by marriage, a daughter, Delisha Corbitt (Adrian) of El Paso, Texas; and a son, Nathan Adams (Karen) of Montgomery, Ala.; three grandchildren, Kelson, Alisha, and Jarred; his mother, Marie Horne Walker of Birmingham; one brother, the Rev. William Patrick Gahan III (Kay) of St. James, Md.; and two sisters, Julia Gahan Badgett (Joe) and Virginia Kay Walker, both of Birmingham. He was preceded in death by one brother, John Hugh Gahan; and his father, William C. Walker. Funeral services will be held at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 901 Kingman Road, Birmingham, Ala. 35235, with burial following in Forest Hill Cemetery. Funeral services for Mrs. Edna Christine Goff, who died Monday, May 27, 2002, will be held at 2 p.m. today, May 29, 2002, at Springfield Community Church with the Rev. Homer Hutto and the Rev. JOSEPH P. HENDRIX
Dr. Joseph P. Hendrix, affectionately known as Dr. Joe, passed away Sunday, May 26, 2002, in Fort Worth, Texas. He was reared in Frisco City, Ala., and was married to the former Mariann Basford. Dr. Hendrix received his medical education at Emory University, and also served with a MASH unit in Korea as a general surgeon during the Korean War. He served in the Navy to get money for his medical school, and later was drafted in the Army in the medical draft. He came to Port St. Joe in 1953 and started a medical practice, he was very active in the American Heart Association, served as chief of staff at the Municipal Hospital; he also served as secretary/president of the Florida Academy of Family Practice, served as president of the Kiwanis Club and was an active member of First United Methodist Church. Dr. Hendrix is survived by his wife, Mariann B. Hendrix; his children, Joseph P. Hendrix Jr. and wife, Lynne; and their daughter, Sara, of Harlingen, Texas; William Hendrix and his two children, Max and Justin of Decatur, Ala., and Mitzi Bulger and her husband, Boyd, and their two children, Mariann and Catie of Fort Worth, Texas; and one sister, Ann Jones of DeFuniak Springs, Fla. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 31, at First United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. EDT with the Rev. Jesse Evans officiating. Interment will follow in Holly Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a favorite charity.

Dovie Doris Monk Landrum, 94, of Culpeper, Va., passed away Friday, May 24, 2002. She was predeceased by her parents, William Noah and Hasiltine Monk; husband, Fred Landrum; siblings, Augustus Monk, Henry Gauwrey Monk Sr., Palestine Anderson, Edith Buchanan and Annie Padgett. She is survived by her loving sister, Lou Ricker of Houston, Texas; and nieces, Margaret Duncan and Bernice Pratt of Panama City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Clore-English Funeral Home in Culpeper, Va., with Dr. Wayne Bernardo officiating. Christian is survived by his mother, Melissa Slay of Panama City; a brother, Daniel Moreno Jr. of Denver, Colo.; maternal grandmother, Kathy Gilbert of Panama City; paternal grandparents, Rafael and Sumiko Moreno of El Paso, Texas; two cousins, Erik Watson and Ronnie Watson, both of Panama City; an aunt, Kristy Watson and her husband, Mike, of Panama City; three great-aunts, Patty Busby of Navarre, Fla., Barbara Warriner and Teri Williams, both of Panama City; two great-uncles, Scott Busby of Navarre and John Slay of Panama City; and godparents, Steve and Renita Taylor of Panama City. Mr. Arthur Leonard "Fish" Sauls, 74, of Panama City, Fla., passed away, Monday, May 27, 2002, at a local nursing facility. He was a native and lifelong resident of Bay County, and was a retired glazier, working for many years at Panama Glass. Mr. Sauls was a member of Springfield Community Church and loved fishing. He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Hurst and her husband, Max, and Leni JoAnn Sauls, all of Panama City; two brothers, Ben Sauls and his wife, Mary, and Cleve Sauls and his wife, Margie, all of Panama City; a sister, Marie Goldman and her husband, Jack, of Panama City; and a great-granddaughter, Sarah Hurst of Tallahassee. Mr. Sauls was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Sauls; and his grandson, Michael Hurst. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 30, 2002, at the Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Carl Curti officiating. Interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery.
