Mary Borelli

Mary Borelli, 95, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003.

She was born Catherine Mary Maxwell on Sept. 21, 1908, in Australia. Mary received her bachelor's degree in French, Spanish and Italian in 1934, and B.A. honors in 1935. She then acquired a diploma in German languages from the University of Berlin. In 1937, she taught English and did interpreting in Leipzig, Germany, and spent the next summer teaching English to doctoral candidates at the University of Naples, Italy. In 1938, Mary returned to England and started teaching French and German at the Rodean School in Brighton, England. She received her master's degree in Spanish in 1951, and earned her Ph.D. in Romance languages in 1954. Mary was head of the language department and also taught music in Edgehill, Nova Scotia. She then taught at Ohio State University for 14 years, as assistant professor in the Italian department with her husband, Luigi. They introduced and conducted an Italian radio program that ran 13 years without interruption. In 1963, Mary and Luigi accepted professorships at the University of South Carolina. While there, they continued to produce their Italian and television programs. In 1977, Luigi and Mary retired to Venice, Fla., before making Port Charlotte home. Mary was very active in the Cultural Center Program in Port Charlotte. All who knew her will dearly miss her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Luigi, in 2003. Burial is private.

Marjorie L. Harmony

Marjorie L. Harmony, 80, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Monday, Oct. 27, 2003.

She was born June 2, 1923, in Mansfield, Ohio. She moved to this area in 1995 from Panama City Beach, Fla. She was a member of the Punta Gorda Golf and Country Club. She enjoyed water aerobics.

Survivors include sons, Alan of Chicago, Ill., Bob of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., and Jon of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; daughter, Constance Harmony of Sarasota, Fla.; and six grandchildren. Mrs. Harmony was preceded in death by her loving husband, William, in 1998.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.

Arrangements are by National Cremation Society, Port Charlotte.

Richard A. Jarosz

Richard Anthony Jarosz, 49, of Lee's Summit, Mo., passed away Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at his home.

Richard was born Aug. 17, 1954, in Palatka, Fla., and raised near Daytona Beach, Fla. He later lived in Dawsonville, Ga., before moving to Kansas City, Mo., in 1995. Richard was currently working for Lazer-Pipes Services Inc. Richard's passions were the Atlanta Braves, NASCAR, summer vacations at the beach and, most importantly, his much adored "girls." His strength, wisdom and love will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Cher; daughters, Kari, Ryan and Haylee, all of Lee's Summit; his parents, George and Ruby Jarosz of Palm Coast, Fla.; brothers, George Jr., Joseph, Michael and John Jarosz of Palm Coast; sisters, Andrea Robertson and Martha White; parents-in-law, Jack and Marlene Knoll of Punta Gorda, Fla.; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jimmy.

Memorial services will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with the funeral Mass at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at St. Regis Catholic Church in Kansas City, Mo.

The family requests no flowers, but memorial contributions for his daughter's education may be made to Richard Jarosz Memorial Fund, c/o Missouri Central Credit Union, P.O. Box 66617, Lee's Summit, MO 64064.

Arrangements are by Langsford Funeral Home, Kansas City, Mo.

Clara Jones

Clara "Bo" Jones, 74, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Friday, Oct. 24, 2003.

She was born July 26, 1929, in Goldsboro, N.C., and moved to this area from Toledo, Ohio, in 1986. She was a resident at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was a member of Al-Anon and Veterans of Foreign Wars, both in Port Charlotte.

Bo is survived by her husband of 29 years, Edward V. Jones of Port Charlotte; sisters, Louise Varadion of Providence, R.I., and Martha Painter of Sarasota, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; and her close friends, Oscar and Lois Pryor.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, 5200 Indian Springs Cemetery Road, Punta Gorda, Fla. Inurnment will be private at Charlotte Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 1144 Veronica St., Port Charlotte, FL 33952.

The family has entrusted care and services to Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, Punta Gorda.

Dorothy E. V. Valkenburg

Dorothy E. Van Valkenburg, 86, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Friday, Oct. 24, 2003.

She was born Jan. 7, 1917, in Fredericktown, Mo., and moved to this area in 1970 from Dearborn, Mich. Mrs. Van Valkenburg was a homemaker and a life member of Sunny Breeze Golf Club, and was an avid golfer.

Survivors include her daughters, Sharon Reisinger of Punta Gorda and Sandra Custer of Prescott, Ariz.; son, Robert Van Valkenburg of Trenton, Mich.; sisters, Maxine Rogers of St. Louis, Mo., Jean Searle of Alexander, Va., and Margie Schag of Palm Desert, Calif.; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3, at the family's home.

Arrangements are by National Cremation Society of Port Charlotte.

Irene T. Winship

Irene T. Winship, 60, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, in Port Charlotte.

She was born June 2, 1943, in Queens, N.Y. Irene had been in Port Charlotte for 11 years, coming from Woodbridge, N.J. She was a member of St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church in Port Charlotte.

Irene is survived by her loving husband of 30 years, James; son, Joseph Winship of Port Charlotte; mother, Elizabeth Szabo of South Jamesport, N.Y.; brother, Alex Szabo of South Jamesport; and sisters, Betty Jappell of Smithtown, N.Y., and Violet Heckman of Calabash, N.C.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday Oct. 30, at Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, 2405 Harbor Blvd., Port Charlotte, with the Rev. Robert B. Mattingly officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Irene's name to American Cancer Society, 22107 Elmira Blvd., Port Charlotte, FL 33952.

Francis Martin

Francis "Marty" Martin, 67, of Rotonda West, Fla., passed away Monday, Oct. 27, 2003.

He was born Dec. 27, 1935, in Detroit, Mich., and moved to Rotonda West in 1999 from Denver, Colo. Mr. Martin retired from the U.S. Air Force after 22 years of service, serving during the Vietnam War. He then worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Denver, retiring from there.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia "Ginny"; sisters, Marcella Taylor, Sally Tomaski, Eleanor Jean Martin and Nancy Stanek, all of Detroit; and brothers, Norman Martin and Jerry Martin, both of Detroit.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 5265 Placida Road, Grove City, Fla.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.

Arrangements are by National Cremation Society of Port Charlotte.

Marie A. Linton

Marie Anna Linton, 79, of Arcadia, Fla., died Monday, Oct. 27, 2003.

She was born Dec. 20, 1923, in Saginaw, Mich. She moved to Arcadia 21 years ago from Sanford, Mich. She retired after 26 years of service in the payroll department of Dow Chemical Co. in Midland, Mich. She was also employed as an accountant in her father's mason and construction business. Mrs. Linton was a former treasurer and member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the Oakview Mobile Home Association, both in Arcadia. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Midland. She was of the Methodist faith.

She is survived by her husband, Cecil K. Linton of Arcadia; two sons, Barney (Sherry) Linton of Hope, Mich., and Gerald (Mary) Linton of Howell, Mich.; two sisters, Jane Morrison of Midland and Ethel Anger of Cape Coral, Fla.; one brother, Joe (Donna) Noack of North Bradley, Mich.; two grandchildren, Scott (Larissa) of Arlington, Va., and Jeremy (Rebecca) of South Bend, Ind.; two great-grandchildren, Caroline and Jon, both of South Bend; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Hikal; and a brother, Carl Noack.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home, 50 N. Hillsboro Ave., Arcadia.

Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, NCICFUL, P.O. Box 102454, Atlanta, GA 30368-2454.

Richard W. O'Neil Jr.

Richard Warren O'Neil Jr., 81, of Englewood, Fla., died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003. Arrangements are by Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood.

Robert D. Fugett

Robert D. Fugett, 76, of Englewood, Fla., passed away Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at his Charlotte County residence.

Mr. Fugett was born Oct. 2, 1927, in Middletown, Ohio, to John C. and Christine A. (Steckrath) Fugett. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. He and his wife, Norma, moved to Englewood in 1981 from Middletown. Bob was a licensed real estate broker and owner of J&B Community Management in Englewood. He was past vice president of the Ohio Board of Realtors and a long-standing member of the Old Timers Rodeo and Wild West Show Club Inc., and held memberships in Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Englewood Board of Realtors and Englewood Chamber of Commerce. Bob and Norma were married more than 53 years.

Surviving are his son, Jeffrey Alan Fugett of Middletown; daughters, Beverly J. Gosnell, Susan E. Chabot, both of Englewood, Beth A. Greer of Venice, Fla., and Jodie M. Dell of Denver, Colo.; sisters, Elisabeth Gibson of Columbus, Ohio, and Marjorie Morrissey of Canon City, Colo.; 11 grandchildren, Caroline McGuiness, Nathanial Greer, Erin Greer, Jamie Fugett, Lyndsey Fugett, Angela Fugett, Trey Chabot, Madison Chabot, Riley Chabot, Collin Mix and Sydney Dell; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma, on Aug. 17, 2003.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood chapel, with the Rev. Noel D. Burke officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date at Woodside Cemetery in Middletown.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.

Arlene M. Lamb

Arlene M. Lamb, 74, of Gowanda, N.Y., and formerly of Englewood, Fla., died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, in Gowanda.

She was born July 21, 1929, in Jamestown, N.Y., the daughter of Donald and Ida Sherman Steenberg. She married Lee J. Lamb Sr. on Oct. 16, 1954. Mrs. Lamb worked as a medical transcriber in New York and at Bon Secours-Venice Hospital in Venice, Fla. She was a member of Women of the Moose 1582 in Englewood and Free Methodist Church in Gowanda.

Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Lee J. Lamb Sr. of Gowanda; a son, Lee (Teri) Lamb Jr. of Rockville, Ind.; two daughters, Patricia (Dennis) Anderson of Rockville and Lisa (Paul) Labelle of Gowanda; a sister, Donna Abers of Gowanda; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Ida Sherman Steenberg.

Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at Englewood Moose Lodge 1582, 55 W. Dearborn St., Englewood. Interment will be at the Gulf Pines Memorial Park in Englewood.

Memorials may be made to The Comstock Hospice, 1225 W. State St., Olean, NY 14760.

Schindler Funeral Home, Gowanda, is in charge of arrangements.

Carl M. Freeman

Carl M. Freeman, 81, of North Port, Fla., and formerly of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at HQM of Port Charlotte. Arrangements are by National Cremation Society of Port Charlotte.

Illeen C. Moore

Illeen C. Moore, 78, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003.

She was born March 19, 1925, in Tariff, W.Va.

A memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Port Charlotte.

Edward P. Griffis

Edward P. Griffis, 72, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte.

He was born Jan. 26, 1931, in Greenville, Pa., to Walter L. and Alice Kechler Griffis. He was a retired church custodian.

There are no known survivors.

Memorial services will be held at a later date at First Presbyterian Church of Port Charlotte.

Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home and Crematory, Port Charlotte.

Edward A. Kelly

Edward A. Kelly, 72, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, in Punta Gorda.

He was born June 13, 1931, in Carbondale, Pa. He resided in Punta Gorda since 1989, relocating from Westchester, N.Y. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955 as a radioman aboard USS Glynn. He graduated with honors from St. John's University in Queens, N.Y., in 1961. He worked for IBM in a variety of management roles for 34 years, retiring in 1987. He enjoyed travel and his family.

Survivors include his wife, Mary B. Kelly; a daughter, Jeanne M. Kelly of New Fairfield, Conn.; three sons, Edward A. (Lois) Kelly Jr. of Ellicott City, Md., Stephen C. (Linda) Kelly of New Windsor, N.Y., and Brian P. (Margreth) Kelly of Mahopac, N.Y.; a sister, Lorraine Quinn of Stockton, N.J.; and 13 grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a Scripture service at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, in the Punta Gorda chapel of Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Entombment will follow at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens.

Arrangements are by Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, Punta Gorda chapel.

Matthew D. Zimick

Matthew D. Zimick, 90, of Sterling, Ill., and formerly of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Wednesday Oct. 22, 2003, in Sterling.

Mr. Zimick was born July 24, 1913, in Chicago, Ill. He was a graduate of St. Patrick High School and earned an associate's degree from Loyola Business School in Chicago. He began his career at the South Works of U.S. Steel and later transferred to the Chicago headquarters. In 1950, he was transferred to the Homestead Works as a supervisor and later manager of Industrial Relations. He married Helen McGinnis on Sept. 1, 1934, who died in 1983. He then married Euniece Fishbeck on Feb. 22, 1986. He was a retired manager of Industrial Relations at U.S. Steel Corp. He was active in his parish, St. Charles Borromeo in Port Charlotte.

Survivors are his wife, Euniece; a daughter, Madonna (Edward) Maris of Sterling; a son, Brian D. (Renee) Zimick of Wexford, Pa.; six grandsons; two granddaughters; two step-granddaughters; one step-grandson; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Daniel; two sisters, Bonnie Krempasky and Stella Weiand; his first wife, Helen, on Aug. 29, 1983; a daughter, Mary Catherine Stuart; and a grandson, Thomas Maris.

Private services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials would be appreciated to Hospice of the Rock River Valley, 264 Illinois Route 2, Dixon, IL 61021.

Beverly Budwitz

Beverly Ruggles Budwitz, 59, was called home to Jesus on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003.

She was born July 23, 1944, in Meriden, Conn. She was the daughter of Walter and Lucille (Polvani) Ruggles. Beverly and her husband, Jack, moved to Englewood a few years ago, after living many years in Meriden and Middletown, Conn. In the early years, she worked in Meriden for Budwitz Bros. Garage and Phillips 66 gasoline station, assisting with the bookkeeping. She was vice president and secretary of many family-run corporations: Scott Oil Inc., Parisi Travel Services, Colony Tobacco Co., Tuxis Coal and Oil Co., Colony Convenience Stores, Colony Ice Cream Co. and Scoil Corp. Mrs. Budwitz was a member of the Juvenile Diabetes. Research Foundation International and a sponsor of Emory University Eye Center. Her granddaughter, Jessica, was her pride and joy and was loved dearly. Beverly was a very loving wife and mother.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 40 years, Jack M. Budwitz; a son, Scott M. (Anne Marie) Budwitz; granddaughter, Jessica; two sisters, Jacqueline Hill of Venice and Claudia Wickstrand of Meriden; 10 nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Memorial service for Beverly will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at Venice Bible Church, 2395 W. Shamrock Blvd., Venice.

In lieu of flowers, donations "In Memory of Beverly Budwitz" may be made to Juvenile Diabetes. Research Foundation International, Donor Service Center, 120 Wall St., 19th Floor, New York, NY 10005-4001.
