Robert E. Paul

Robert E. Paul, 62, of Arcadia, Fla., died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003.

He was born March 12, 1941, in St. Louis, Mo. He moved to Arcadia seven years ago from Pylesville, Md. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a retired plumber at Hartford County Board of Education in Maryland. He attended First Presbyterian Church in Arcadia. He loved ranch work and loved working with his cattle and horses. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra K. Paul of Arcadia; mother, Georgia Orlena McArthur of Arcadia; a daughter, Sharon (Mark) Kreder of Arcadia; a son, David E. Paul of Arcadia; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Marion James Paul.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home, 50 N. Hillsboro Ave., Arcadia. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Ted Land officiating. Burial will be at Joshua Creek Cemetery in Arcadia. Arrangements are by Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home, Arcadia chapel.

Karen A. Goff

Karen Anne Goff, 49, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003, in her home, surrounded by family.

Karen was born Aug. 27, 1954, in Decatur, Ill. She moved to Port Charlotte, Fla., with her family in 1959, and graduated from Charlotte High School in June 1972. In July 1972, she married Steve Goff. In 1975, Karen became one of Jehovah's Witnesses and remained faithful until her death. Karen was loved by so many that words are unable to describe the depth of our loss and how much she will be missed.

Karen is survived by her parents, Gordon and Yvonne Ekiss of Port Charlotte; her husband of 31 years, Steve; her sons, Josh and Steve; and a daughter-in-law, Shelley, all of Punta Gorda; two sisters, Mary Browning and Barbara Lewis, both of Port Charlotte; a brother, David Ekiss of Port Charlotte; mother- and father-in-law, Betty and Virgil Goff of Punta Gorda; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends who loved her dearly.

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, in Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 27265 Jones Loop Road, Punta Gorda. Arrangements are by Kays-Ponger Funeral Home, Punta Gorda chapel.

Patrick Macaluso

Patrick Macaluso, 92, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, at HQM nursing home in Port Charlotte.

He was born Aug. 20, 1911, in Westfield, N.Y., the second son of George and Rose LaBarber Macaluso. He moved to Erie, Pa., in 1916, where he lived until his retirement to Florida in 1981. He owned and operated Young's Cleaners and Dyers with his wife, Anne, in Erie, for more than 40 years. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed repairing things for friends and neighbors, and liked playing cards and bingo. He was a member of the Presbyterian church in Punta Gorda, Fla., where he served as an elder.

He is survived by two sons, Thomas (Kathleen) M. Macaluso of Erie and George (Kathleen) A. Macaluso of South Mills, N.C.; a daughter, Marilyn (Edward) Keim of Erie; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Rose LaBarber Macaluso; his wife, Anne Macaluso; and a brother, Joseph Macaluso.

Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at Church of the Cross in Erie. Florida services will be Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Presbyterian church in Punta Gorda.

Memorial contributions may be made to Safe-Net, P.O. Box 1436, Erie, PA 16512. Arrangements are by At Peace Cremation Services Inc., Sarasota, Fla.

John P. Parshley

John P. Parshley, 90, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003.

He was born May 31, 1913, in Portland, Maine, and moved to this area 18 years ago from Long Island, N.Y. Mr. Parshley was a retired television sales and service person. He was a longtime volunteer with the Kidney Foundation in Port Charlotte.

Survivors include his wife, Ellin; daughters, Lynn Freda and Gail Rewkowski, both of Port Charlotte; son, Alan Parshley of Kent, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren.

Friends can express their condolences from noon to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at the family residence.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.

Lester D. Patterson

Lester Dean Patterson, 80, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, in Punta Gorda, Fla.

He was born Aug. 30, 1923, in Moundsville, W.Va. Lester was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. Lester retired in August 1989 from the International Allied Trades Painter Local 476, of which he was a member since 1950. He had been in Port Charlotte since 1999, coming from Youngstown, Ohio.

Lester is survived by his two daughters, Loretta Patterson of Port Charlotte and Jeanette Amirech of Girard, Ohio; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Lester was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, 2405 Harbor Blvd., Port Charlotte. Burial with full military honors will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla. Arrangements are by Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Homes, Port Charlotte chapel.

Shirley J. Beachner

Shirley J. Beachner, 84, of Englewood, Fla., died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003.

She was born Aug. 12, 1919, in Rochester, N.Y., and came to this area 16 years ago from Webster, N.Y.

She is survived by her husband, Randall G.; a son, Scott Randall of Webster; a daughter, Doreen M. Hosenfeld of Pennfield, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at a later date in Rochester. Lemon Bay Funeral Homes, Englewood chapel, is in charge of cremation arrangements.

Alfred H. Cors

Alfred H. Cors, 70, of North Port, Fla., and Etowah, N.C., died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003, at his home, following a brief illness.

He was born Dec. 31, 1932, in Glenside, Pa., the son of Alfred H. Cors and Edna Conway Cors. Prior to moving to Henderson County, N.C., in 2000, he lived most of his life in Glenside and North Port. He was employed as a finished carpenter in residential construction and was a member of Carpenters Union Local 1073 in Philadelphia, Pa.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Marie V. Cors of Etowah; two daughters, Linda Cors of Trooper, Pa., and Debbie Cors of North Port; sister, Joan (Ralph) Ballantyne of Philadelphia; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred H. Cors and Edna Conway Cors.

No local service is planned. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Four Seasons Hospice, P.O. Box 2395, Hendersonville, NC 28793. Shuler Funeral Home of Hendersonville is in charge of the arrangements.

Dennis T. Prahm

Dennis Theodore Prahm, 52, of Arcadia, Fla., passed away Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003, at his residence.

He was born April 26, 1951, in Waterloo, Iowa.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Prahm of Arcadia; a son, Philip (Lisa) Nazzaro of Spencer, W.Va.; daughters, Rhonda (Carl) Hiers and Tonya (Cecil) Bell, both of LaBelle, Fla., and Melissa Watson (Bradley Frye) of Arcadia; brothers, Donnie Prahm of North Port, Fla., Darrel Prahm of Mississippi and David Prahm of Cross City, Fla.; sisters, Karen Ricketson of Las Vegas, Nev., and Barbara Shimmel of Bradenton, Fla.; and 11 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at Robarts Funeral Home, Arcadia chapel, 163 N. Brevard Ave., Arcadia. Visitation was Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the funeral home. Robarts Funeral Home, Arcadia chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Peter M. Steiner

Peter Michael Steiner, 67, of North Port, Fla., passed away Monday, Oct. 13, 2003. Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home and Crematory, Port Charlotte chapel, Port Charlotte, Fla.

Tokie A.J. Adkins

Tokie Anna Jean Holland Adkins, 72, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, in Port Charlotte.

She was born June 7, 1931, in Kenova, W.Va. Tokie was an owner and operator of Tokie's Bait Shop in El Jobean, Fla., for many years. She had been in Port Charlotte for 24 years, coming from Ceredo, W.Va. She was a member of Church of Christ of Ceredo.

Tokie is survived by her sons, Charles William (Rita) Pridemore of Ceredo, Robert Franklin (Karen) Pridemore of Port Charlotte and Terry Lowell (Sandra) Pridemore of Venice, Fla.; sisters, Ethel Adkins of Ceredo and Wanda Skeenes of Kenova, W.Va.; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cline Adkins, in 2001; and three brothers.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday Oct. 16, at Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, 2405 Harbor Blvd., Port Charlotte. Services will be held in Ceredo at a later date. Burial will be at Hillcrest County Cemetery, Wayne County, W.Va.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tokie's name to American Lung Association, Attention: Asthma Summer Camp Program, 1436 Royal Palm Square, Fort Myers, FL 33919. Arrangements are by Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Homes, Port Charlotte chapel.

Mable Keys

Mable Lewis Keys, 91, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte, Fla.

She was born May 23, 1912, in Punta Gorda, to her parents, Ruth Lewis and Leslie L. Lewis. She graduated from Charlotte High School in 1930. She also attended Halton Business College in Tampa, Fla., now Tampa Business College. She worked for the Inter-County Telephone and Telegraph Co. for 18 years. When she resigned, she took a position at the Punta Gorda Army Air Base with the Signal Corps until her husband came home from the U.S. Navy. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Her love was music; she was a talented pianist. She served as a musician at several sessions of the Grand Lodge of the Rebekah Assembly of Florida. She will be remembered as the manager and organizer of the Belles and Beaux Band sponsored by the local Rebekah Lodge. She was a life member and a past royal matron of Peace Court No. 50, order of the Amaranth and past noble grand of Golden Rule No. 60 Rebekah Lodge; a past district deputy of District 18, which is comprised of Punta Gorda, Fort Myers, Fla., and Lehigh Acres, Fla.; and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary Patriot Militant Tarpon No. 9, Fort Myers. She was a life member of the Pink Ladies Volunteers at Charlotte Regional Medical Center, and a 60-year member of American Legion Post 103. In 1970, she was awarded the Decoration of Chivalry for community service by the patriarch militant of "the sovereign Grand Lodge I.O.O.F." She truly enjoyed all of her activities and will be missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold "Slim" Keys; and her parents, Ruth Lewis and Leslie L. Lewis.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., with funeral services at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Punta Gorda chapel of Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Indian Springs Cemetery. Arrangements are by Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, Punta Gorda chapel.

Margueriete E. Reber

Margueriete E. Reber, 93, of Punta Gorda, Fla., and formerly of Marion, Mich., died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003, in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Mrs. Reber was born March 13, 1910, in Marion to John Richard and Elma Elnora (Chilcote) Thompson. She married Earl Ford Reber on Sept. 12, 1926, in Marion. She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist church in Marion. She was a loving mother and homemaker.

She is survived by her son, Jack (Rosalie) Reber of Port Charlotte; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Franklin Reber; an infant brother, Richard; a sister, Helen Wiley; a half-brother, Lewis Richard Reber; and a grandson, Timothy Earl Reber.

Funeral services for Mrs. Reber were held Sunday, Oct. 12, Fosnaught-Holdship Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev. Joel Nephew officiating. Burial was at Greenwood Cemetery in Marion.

Memorial donations may be made to an organization of donor's choice. Arrangements are by Fosnaught-Holdship Funeral Home, Marion.

Norma M. Staub

Norma Marguerite Staub, 84, of Englewood, Fla., died Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, at her Charlotte County residence.

She was born July 11, 1919, in Galesburg, Ill., to Elmer and Clara (Charleston) Asher. She had been a resident of Englewood for 21 years, coming from Westmont, Ill.

Mrs. Staub was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10178 and Women of the Moose, both in Englewood. She regularly volunteered as a visitor and an entertainer at local nursing homes. She was very well known and loved in Englewood. She was a loving wife, mother and homemaker for her large family and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Charles B. Staub of Englewood; four daughters, Betty A. (James) Lass of Downers Grove, Ill., Charlotte B. (Don) Barth of Marietta, Texas, Evelyn L. (Mike) Ieler of El Cajon, Calif., and Donna G. (Melvin) Pepper of Lake City, Fla.; two sons, Kenneth G. (Trudy) Staub of West Chicago, Ill., and Dale E. (Lisa) Staub of El Cajon; 12 grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at Englewood Community Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 3070 S. McCall Road, Englewood. Inurnment will be in Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla. Arrangements are by Englewood Community Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Englewood.

Eugene H. Taylor

Eugene Harold "Sonny" Taylor, 71, of North Port, Fla., and Bourne, Mass., died Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, in Bourne.

He was born Wednesday, March 30, 1932, in Quincy, Mass. He was raised in Dorchester, Mass., Weymouth, Mass., and on the cape. He attended Weymouth High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge, he worked for the Weymouth Water Department until moving to Bourne in 1965. He was a firefighter with the Bourne Fire Department, retiring in 1987 as a lieutenant. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, a past president of the Barnstable County Agricultural Society, a past trustee of the Bourne memorial community building and held several offices at Lazy River Village in North Port. He was a member of St. Peter's on the Canal in Buzzards Bay, Mass., and was of the Episcopal faith.

He is survived by his wife, Jaquelin L. Taylor of Bourne; two daughters, Bonnny Rose of Bourne and Lisa Zia of Huntington Beach, Calif.; three sons, Scott Taylor of Sandwich, Mass., Glenn Taylor and Mark Taylor, both of Bourne; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry H. Taylor and Catherine Taylor.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home in Bourne. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at St. Peter's on the Canal, Buzzards Bay, with the Rev. Richard Signore officiating. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Weymouth.

Ronda Zadroga

Ronda Byrd Zadroga, 29, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003.

She was born May 23, 1974, in Arcadia, Fla. She had been a longtime resident of this area. Ronda loved the outdoors and she also loved to sing and spend time with her family.

Ronda is survived by her husband, James; her beloved and precious daughter, Tyler-Ann; parents, the Rev. Roger and Rosalee Byrd Sr., all of Arcadia; brother, Roger Byrd Jr. of Tennessee; her paternal grandmother, Vernelle Strickland of Port Charlotte, Fla.; several aunts and uncles; cousins; and many special friends.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, 5200 Indian Springs Cemetery Road, Punta Gorda. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until funeral services at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at Church of God of Prophecy, 662 Cooper St., Punta Gorda. Burial will follow at Indian Springs Cemetery. The family has entrusted care and services to Charlotte Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, Punta Gorda.

Ara M. Dennison

Ara M. Dennison, 86, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at her residence. Englewood Community Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Englewood, Fla., has been selected to handle arrangements.

Anthony J. Guastavino

Anthony J. Guastavino, 50, of Sarasota, Fla., died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at his residence. Englewood Community Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Englewood, Fla., has been selected to handle arrangements.

Cynthia A. Skay

Cynthia Ann Skay, 53, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003. Arrangements are by Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services, Punta Gorda, Fla.

Mary N. Haegele

Mary Nedra Haegele, 84, of Deep Creek, Fla., passed away Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at Charlotte Regional Medical Center in Punta Gorda, Fla.

She was born Nov. 17, 1918, in Plymouth, Ill. She and her husband came to Punta Gorda from Cherokee Village, Ark., in the summer of 2003.

Nedra will be greatly missed by her husband of 67 years, John R. Haegele; sons, John R. "Rick" (Linda) Haegele Jr. of Placida, Fla., and Ronald F. (Lila) Haegele of El Dorado Hills, Calif.; and granddaughters, Dianna (Scott) Pickup of Woodstock, Ga., and Kayte Haegele of El Dorado Hills. She was preceded in death by her brother, Jack White; and grandson, Rhett Haegele.

Nedra will be returned to Cherokee Village, where she and John enjoyed so many happy years together. Arrangements are by Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services, Punta Gorda.

Helen Horner

Helen Horner, 84, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at Englewood Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Nov. 2, 1918, in Carmi, Ill., to Frank and Minnie (Galloway) Martin. She had been a resident of the Englewood and Port Charlotte areas since 1979, coming from Silver Spring, Md. Mrs. Horner was a retired registered nurse who served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. She was a life member of the Reserve Officers Association, Disabled American Veterans 154 in Punta Gorda, a charter member of Women in military Service for America, a member of One Source Columbia Hospital Corp.; and an alumni of the Jewish Hospital of St. Louis Missouri University Medical Center (class of 1939).

Survivors include her son, John S. Horner of Fairless Hills, Pa.; two daughters, S. Jill Horner of Frederick, Md., and Shelley Lynn Horner of Gaithersburg, Md.; and one sister, Virginia Young of Carmi, Ill. She was preceded in death by her husband, retired Lt. Col. John E.W. "Jack" Horner, in 1994.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Englewood Community Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 3070 S. McCall Road, with the Rev. Bill Nelson of Englewood United Methodist Church officiating. A committal Burial service will follow at 2 p.m. at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla., with the Sumter County Honor Guard. Arrangements are by Englewood Community Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
