Leonard Donald Naylor of Fort Myers, Florida passed away on August 17, 2004. He was born September 1, 1915 in Duryea, Pennsylvania , to the late Charles Fred and Gertrude Penhale Naylor.
Len served in the U.S. Army for seven years. He was on the island of Corregidor, Philippine Islands, when World War II began. He was a Sergeant and Chief of Range in Battery H of the Coast Artillery AA. The defense of Corregidor lasted five months until the American defenders were almost out of food and water and had only antiquated equipment. They were forced to surrender all the Philippine Islands to the Japanese Army. Len was first held in a P.OW. camp in the Philippines and later shipped to Osaka, Japan, were he was forced to work in Yodogawa Steel Mill as a laborer. Three months before the war ended, he was moved to Miadsu, Japan, where he worked as a stevedore unloading ships for his Japanese captors. His reward for working in the Yodogawa camp was that his weight dropped from 168 pounds to 112 pounds. He was a prisoner of the Japanese for a total of 1,254 days, from May 1942 to September 1945. Len was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action on April 28, 1942. The day before his death, the Army awarded him a Purple Heart for wounds he received while in captivity, as well as a Prisoner of War Medal.
Len was recalled to action at the start of the Korean War and was stationed at Marham Air Base in England. He was discharged after being there eleven months. After discharge from the Army, Len was hired by IBM in Endicott, New York. During the thirty years he was employed by IBM, Len and his family moved to Green Castle, Indiana ; Sherman, Texas ; Concord, Massachusetts; and Dayton, New Jersey. He retired from IBM at Dayton, New Jersey in 1975.
Len was a life time member of Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor, Ex Prisoner of War, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Masonic Lodge in Johnson City, New York. He was also a member of: Irem Shrine, Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania ; Faith United Methodist Church, Fort Myers, Florida; and Shrine Club, Fort Myers Beach, Florida.
Len was preceded in death by his wife of 30 years, Ruth Tracy Naylor, and by his second wife of 23 years, Elizabeth Phillips Naylor. He is survived by four daughters, Lesbeth Offenberg of Marlboro, New Jersey; Arlette Pharo of Houston, Texas ; Michele Bacorn of North Brunswick, New Jersey; and Jessica Onesty of Roanoke, Virginia. He is also survived by two step children, Jeanette Reeder of Wadsworth, Ohio; Philip Jones of Dearborn Heights, Michigan and by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Friday, August 20th at Faith United Methodist Church, Fort Myers, Florida. Inurnment will be in Arlington National Cemetery. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Faith United Methodist Church, or Hope Hospice, Cape Coral, Florida.

Lloyd Daniel Williams, III, 25, (known to his family and friends as Danny) went to be with the Lord on August 13, 2004. His life tragically ended due to Hurricane Charley. He was known by family and friends for trying to fix and build things (even if it wasn't broke). He was always willing to lend a hand when help was needed, to anyone in need. He was also a very talented artist and musician. He is loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
Danny is survived by his parents Lloyd (Danny) and Debbie Williams, Jr., his sister Shannon Perez (Felix), his brother Cameron Williams, grandparents Francis Rudd, Marilyn Bryant, and Lloyd and Judy Williams, his great-grandpa Gaynor Blouin, aunts and uncles Gayle and Eric Moulton, Debbie and Willie Braswell, Kevin and Sue Williams, and Michael Nichols, and his cousins Amanda Stolt (Jesse), Mike Nichols, Ashley and Sarah Moulton, Willie Braswell, Max and McKenzie Williams. He was preceded in death by his uncle Greg B. Williams.
Funeral service will be Friday at 10:00 AM at the First Assembly of God on Summerlin Road with Pastor Kenneth Cook officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be Thursday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. Interment will be in Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the First Community Bank of SW Florida, 1565 Red Cedar Drive, Ft. Myers, FL 33907.

Edward B. Zakens, Jr., age 74, of Ft. Myers, passed away August 18, 2004 in Ft. Myers. He was born Nov. 18, 1929 in Detroit, MI to Edward B. Zakens, Sr. and Barbara Maslanka Zakens. Edward was former owner of Gulf Side Services Roofing Co. and then started a career in real estate, working as an associate with Gardenia Realty until his retirement in 2002. He served with the Army Engineers during the Korean War and lived in Detroit until the family moved to Ft. Myers in 1972. He was a member of Elks Lodge #1288 and Tice Ft. Myers Lodge #1297.
Survived by beloved wife Shelia Mulligan Zakens, children, Dawn Kiely (Derek), John Zakens (Marcia) and Edward B. Zakens, III (Becky), brother, John J. Zakens, E. Detroit, sisters, Joan Valent, Eagle Harbor, MI, Mary Ann Zakens and Barbara Zakens of Warren, MI, four grandchildren.
Funeral services are Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, 10:00 AM at St. Vincent DePaul Church in Ft. Myers with FAther David Arle officiating. Viewing and prayers with the family will be Friday, August 20, 2004 from 6:30-8:00 PM at St. Vincent DePaul Church. Arrangements by Akin-Davis Funeral Home-Ft. Myers.

Joshua Zeitler, age 1, of Naples, died Tuesday, August 17, 2004.
Joshua is survived by his loving parents, Kurt and Marianne Zeitler; his sister, Margaret and three brothers, Fred, Colton and Caleb; maternal grandparents, Fred and Virginia Williams of Naples and paternal great-grandmother, Myrtle Koch of Shawano, WI; several aunts, uncles, cousins and other loving family members. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents.
The family will receive friends Sunday, August 22, 2004 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Muller-Thompson Funeral Chapel, 2011 Pine Ridge Rd. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Muller-Thompson Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at Naples Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, a trust fund has been established in Joshua's memory where contributions can be made at any First National Bank.

Walter W. Duke, 90, of Cape Coral passed away on August 18, 2004. He retired from the 13th and 82nd U.S. Army Airborne Divisions and fulfilled a career working for the Defense Dept. at the Pentagon.
In 1983 he became a familiar face to many residents by helping spearhead the campaign to widen Rte. 80 with Sen. Connie Mack.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Monica Duke in 1990, daughter Deborah Ann, and sister Stella Gaul. He is survived by his loving sister, Helene Wenzel, daughters (and spouses) Jean Pavese, Jacqueline and Michael English, Virginia & Jack Russell, 9 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren.
Sincere gratitude to Maria Montoya and Marco Munoz for all their loving care. The family also wishes to thank the staff of the 2nd FL Med/Surg and 4th FL SPC Units at HealthPark Medical Center for their special care and support.

Christopher J. Heinle, 35, of Ft. Myers, died at home August 16, 2004. He was born in Merrill, WI a son of James and Carol (Emery) Heinle who also reside in Ft. Myers. He was employed as Director of Communications with Simmons Communications of Ft. Myers.
Chris is survived by his daughter, Savanna Rose, his parents, 2 brothers, Tom, Edgerton, WI and John (Diane) Grafton, WI.
Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held Thursday, August 26, 2004 at Stone Bridge County Club, 2100 Winding Oaks Way, Naples, FL.

Christy Jane Berg McClure, 58, of Bonita Springs, FL, formerly of Pittsburgh, PA, succumbed to a 2 year battle with Cancer, on Friday morning, August 20, 2004.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday, August 25 from 4 - 7 p.m. at Walter Shikany's Bonita Funeral Home, 28300 Tamiami Trail South (US 41), Bonita Springs, FL. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Thursday, August 26 at 7 p.m. at The First Presbyterian Church of Bonita Springs, 9751 Bonita Beach Road, Bonita Springs, FL.
Christy is survived by her husband, local attorney, Robert W. McClure, her daughter Laura Elizabeth, son Joseph Richard and a brother Richard Williams Berg, Jr. of Pittsburgh, PA.

Gertrude V. Tarkington, 92, of Ft. Myers died August 17, 2004. Born in Creswell, NC she came to the area in 1972 from Queens, NY.
Mrs. Tarkington was a resident of Shell Point Village for ten years. She also enjoyed many types of craft work.
Survivors include her children, Gloria (Ralph) Schulz of Cape Coral, FL, Susan (Frank) Sabatini of Granby, CT, and Tom (Teresa) Tarkington of Northport, NY; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was celebrated on Friday August 20, 2004. Memorial contributions should be directed to Hope Hospice at Shell Point C/O The Legacy Foundation at Shell Point.

Captain Eugene R. Williams, born July 7, 1912 to Thaddeus and Florida Belle Williams in Ft. Myers, FL passed away August 14, 2004 at his home in Sanford, FL. He was predeceased by his son, Whitney Eugene Williams.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Florence, of Sanford, FL, his son Frank T. Williams (Mary) of Key Largo, FL, and his daughter, Candace Charles (Michael) of Sanford, FL. He leaves nine grandchildren; Michael, Frank, Jennifer (Ken), Bridgette, Amanda (Victor), Heather, Mary Kathryn and Whitney and eight great-grandchildren.
Capt. Eugene Williams was from a Florida pioneering family who moved to the state in the early 1800's. Like his ancestors before him, Eugene's life was full and adventurous. During high school, he played football for Ft. Myers High School, which he graduated from in 1933. Upon graduation, he went to work as first mate on his father's charter yachts, and eventually was asked to captain the Porpoise, owned by Marineland of Florida in St. Augustine, supplying fish for the marine studio and for scientific study. Eugene also learned to fly at Emery Riddle School in Miami, FL and was a private flight instructor for the military in Arcadia, FL during World War II. He later moved to Miami and continued working as captain on luxury yachts before moving to Florida Keys where he purchased his first charter boat from Bucky Starke. Upon retirement, Eugene moved to Sanford, FL.
Captain Williams' love of the sea and the many tales of Old Florida he imparted over the years will be sorely missed.
