Marvin Randolph Townsend

CROSS CREEK -- Marvin Randolph Townsend of Cross Creek died Wednesday at his home. He was 84.

Mr. Townsend was a retired cattle rancher and farmer. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Born in Hawthorne, he was a lifelong resident of the Cross Creek area.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Mr. Townsend was a Christian.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Dees Townsend.

Survivors include a brother, Dorsey Townsend of Cross Creek; three sisters, Thelma Griffis of Lake Placid, Christine Polk of Evinston and Lillian Polk of Windsor; and his caregiver, Curtis O'Quinn of Cross Creek.

Ross Harold Arnett

Ross Harold Arnett Jr. of Gainesville died Friday at his home after a long illness. He was 80.

Dr. Arnett taught entomology at the University of Florida and earlier at several other colleges and universities.

Born in Medina, N.Y., Dr. Arnett came here 17 years ago from Kinderhook, N.Y. He graduated from Cornell University, where he also received his master's and doctorate degrees.

He taught entomology at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y., Catholic University in Washington D.C., Purdue University in Indiana, Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y. and Florida State University before coming to UF, where he taught part time until 1996.

In addition, Dr. Arnett was an associate of the State of Florida Bureau of Entomology at the Doyle Conner Building and author of about 200 books and research papers. In 1985, he received the R. R. Hawkin Award from the American Association of Publishers.

He belonged to the Cosmos Club, Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi, the Florida State Entomological Society, the Center of Systematic Entomology, the American Entomological Society and others. He also was a member of the Holy Faith Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mary Ennis Arnett; eight children, Ross H. Arnett III of Columbia, Md., Michael J. Arnett of Tacoma, Wash., Mary Anne Arnett of Baltimore, Barbara Paraskevas of Tarpon Springs, Fran Armstrong of Gainesville, Joseph Arnett of Lafayette, Ind., Bernadette D'Alessandro of Waterford, N.Y., Matthew C. Arnett of Salt Lake City; two sisters, Georgiana Pound of Rush, N.Y. and Millicent Matson of Randolph, N.Y.; 21 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of North Central Florida or Holy Faith church.

Mary Lucille Rowe

STARKE -- Mary Lucille Rowe of Starke died Friday at Shands at Starke after a long illness. She was 66.

Mrs. Rowe was a homemaker.

Mrs. Rowe was born in the Theressa Community in Starke and lived all her life in Bradford County. She belonged to Grace Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Leonard Cecil Rowe of Starke; a daughter, Shawna R. Murrow of Keystone Heights; a son, Leonard Dale Rowe of Starke; three sisters, Shirley Gnann of Starke; Ernestine Moody of Keystone Heights and Emma Jo Hardenbrook of Westminster, S.C.; and two grandchildren.

Martha Jane Virgil Berger

KEYSTONE HEIGHTS -- Martha Jane Virgil Berger of Keystone Heights died Saturday at her home after a long illness. She was 68.

Mrs. Berger was born in Elkhart, Ind., and moved to Keystone Heights from Jacksonville, where she had lived for many years. A 1948 graduate of Washington Clay High School in South Bend, Ind., she received her associate's degree from Florida Community College at Jacksonville in 1982.

She retired from the Duval County School Board, where she worked as an accountant for 24 years. She was a member of the Keystone Heights United Methodist Church and Keystone Heights Womens Club.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, James Robert Berger of Keystone Heights; a daughter, Suzan E. Schnippert of Jacksonville; a son, Bruce A. Berger of Clearwater; and three grandchildren.

L. Arthurine Blanchard

LAWTEY -- L. Arthurine Blanchard of Lawtey died Saturday at St. Augustine Health and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness. She was 91.

Miss Blanchard was a lifelong resident of Lawtey. She worked as a senior bank clerk for Atlantic National Bank in Jacksonville for many years. She also was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Lawtey and a 15-year member of the Womens Hospital Auxiliary.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews.

Brian Mitchell Evans

NEWBERRY -- Brian Mitchell Evans of Newberry died following an auto accident Friday. He was 40.

Mr. Evans was born in Baltimore. He moved to Newberry seven years ago and was a laborer at a Gainesville recycling plant. He was a Methodist.

Survivors include his grandmother, Thelma A. Campbell of Newberry; two aunts, Nancy Grogan of Newberry and Jackie Campbell of South Hampton, N.J.; two sisters, Vicky Neyer of Baltimore and Donna-Jean Wright of San Antonio, Texas; and a brother, William L. Evans of Baltimore.

Ruth Parmenter Holder

STARKE -- Ruth Parmenter Holder of Starke died Saturday at her home after a long illness. She was 48.

Mrs. Holder was a native and lifelong Starke resident. She was Baptist.

Survivors include two sons, Rusty Eberle of Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., and Richie Eberle of Alma, Ga.; her father and stepmother, H.F. and Barbara Parmenter of Alma, Ga.; a sister, Janet Lawson of Buford, Ga.; two brothers, Vernon Parmenter of Hampton Lake and Danny Parmenter of Starke; and two grandchildren.

Gertrude George Gornto

KEYSTONE HEIGHTS -- Gertrude George Gornto of Keystone Heights died Sunday at Shands at AGH after a sudden illness. She was 91.

Mrs. Gornto was born in Morriston. She moved to Keystone Heights a year ago from Jacksonville, where she had lived for 55 years. A homemaker, she was a retired licensed practical nurse and a charter member of Peace Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Gornto Jr., and a son, Ira Gornto.

Survivors include her two daughters, Catherine Robbins of Hallandale and Frances Buffington of Keystone Heights; a son, John Gornto of Neptune Beach; a sister, Mary Moon of Evansville, Ind.; a brother, Harry George of Gainesville; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Clarence Anderson

Clarence Anderson of Gainesville died June 18 in Lake Butler after a long illness. He was 54.

Mr. Anderson, a laborer, was born in Shamrock and was a Protestant.

Survivors include his mother, Gladys Anderson of Gainesville; four sisters, Annie Pearl Rentz, Wilhelmina James, Mary A. Cason and Geraldine Anderson, all of Gainesville; and two brothers, Jack Anderson Jr. and Otis Anderson, both of Gainesville.

Sheffield M. Cobia

Sheffield M. Cobia of Gainesville died Thursday at North Florida Regional Medical Center. He was 77.

Mr. Cobia was a retired rancher and motel manager. He also served in the U.S. Navy and Air Corps during World War II.

Born in Sebring, he was a lifelong resident of Florida. He received a bachelor of arts degree in animal husbandry from the University of Florida.

Survivors include his wife, Joan J. Cobia of Gainesville; a son, Jay R. Cobia of San Antonio, Texas; a daughter, Sally Ann Rogers of St. Rainier, Md.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to Hospice of North Central Florida.

Glen E. Elixson

MACCLENNY - Glen E. Elixson of Macclenny died Wednesday at St. Vincent's Hospital in Jacksonville after a brief illness. He was 59.

Mr. Elixson was a truck driver and a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Lake Butler.

Born in Lake Butler, he lived there until moving to Macclenny six months ago.

Survivors include two daughters, Malissa Elixson of Macclenny and Nicki Linton of Jacksonville; three brothers, Vernie Elixson, Ronnie Elixson and Donald Elixson, all of Lake Butler; a sister, Mary Joye of Wesley Chapel; and three grandchildren.

Robert Calvin Faircloth Sr.

Robert Calvin Faircloth Sr. of Gainesville died Wednesday at his home. He was 69.

Mr. Faircloth was a retired auto salesman. He also served in the U.S. Army.

Born in Sanford, he moved from Sanford to Gainesville 25 years ago.

He was a member of Church of God in Newberry.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Lee Faircloth of Gainesville; a daughter, Brenda Hess of Gainesville; a son, Bob Faircloth Jr. of Vancouver, Wash.; and four grandchildren.

Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to Hospice of North Central Florida.
