Elizabeth Ruth Hipp

TRENTON -- Elizabeth Ruth Hipp died Saturday in Gainesville. She was 84.

She was born in Lebanon, Tenn., and moved to Trenton from Atlanta. She worked as a clerk for Sears and Roebuck.

She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include sisters Jane H. Beach of Trenton and Lucille Enns and Kathryn Huggins, both of Fort Pierce.

Emmett Lee Vickers

STARKE -- Emmett Lee Vickers died Saturday at Shands at Starke. He was 75.

He was born in Mobile, Ala., and moved to Starke in 1977 from Homestead. Mr. Vickers was a retired Sea Bee in the U.S. Navy. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and cooking.

He was a Protestant.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Vickers; daughters Linda Vickers of Fort Worth, Texas, and Rhonda Meeks of Hazelhurst, Ga.; son Emmett Lee Vickers Jr. of Corpus Christi, Texas; stepson Curtis Knights of Starke; a brother, Gordon Vickers of Alabama; a sister, Hazel Markus of Sturgis, Mich.; and 11 grandchildren.

Mable Dell Bryant

STARKE - Mable Dell Bryant died Monday at Windsor Manor Care Center after an extended illness. She was 88.

She was a lifelong resident of Starke and attended Bradford County schools. She was a retired presser at Dell's Dry Cleaners.

She was a member of Mount Moriah United Methodist Church, where she served on the Ushers Board for many years.

Survivors include her nephew, the Rev. Robert Dell; and her brothers Eddie and Dewitt Parnell of Macclenny.

Luella L. Buchanon

Luella L. Buchanon of Jonesville died Sunday at Shands at AGH following a lengthy illness.

She was 82.

A lifelong resident of Jonesville, Mrs. Buchanon was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Plain United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Buchanon is survived by her husband, Chester Buchanon of Gainesville; daughters Romelda Buchanon, Idella Ivey and Altamese Washington, all of Gainesville; a son, Chester Buchanon Jr. of Gainesville; a brother, Lyman Long of Jonesville; 14 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren.

Stella Howell Carter

Stella Howell Carter of Gainesville died Tuesday at Shands at AGH.

She was 89.

Mrs. Carter retired as a house mother at Tacachale, formerly called the Sunland Training Center.

Born in Tallahassee, she moved from Vero Beach to Gainesville more than 50 years ago.

She was a member of the American Legion and the Moose Lodge.

She was Pentecostal.

Survivors include a son, Thomas Kenneth Howell of Gainesville; a brother, Richard Williams of Wacissa; sisters Semmie Boland and Elverie Chapin, both of Tallahassee, and Alliree Walker of Wacissa; her caregiver, Pat Johns of High Springs; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Paul Durward Dempsey

PLANT CITY - Paul Durward Dempsey of Plant City died Monday in Tampa. He was 79.

Mr. Dempsey was a retired trooper with the Florida Highway Patrol.

He was born in Hamilton County and moved from Trenton to Plant City 35 years ago.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma Louise Dempsey of Plant City; a daughter; and a granddaughter.

Leo Floyd

Leo Floyd of Gainesville died Tuesday at Shands at AGH. He was 80.

Born in Chickasha, Okla., Mr. Floyd came here in 1960. He did maintenance and plumbing at the University of Florida.

Mr. Floyd served in the Navy during World War II. He attended Pine Grove Baptist Church.

Mr. Floyd is survived by his wife, Louise Thomas Floyd; three brothers, Jerry Floyd of Norman, Okla., and Gene and Dean Floyd of Andrews, Texas; and two sisters, Iva Penick and Geraldine McHugh of Chickasha.

Lucille McKinney Haven

Lucille McKinney Haven of Gainesville died Wednesday in Gainesville. She was 73.

Mrs. Haven was retired from the University of Florida Foundation.

Born in Wildwood, she moved from Atlanta to Gainesville 42 years ago.

She was a member of the University City Church of Christ.

Mrs. Haven was preceded in death by her first husband, Hugh H. Haven Jr.

Survivors include her husband, Don Phelps of Gainesville; a daughter, Jill Van Tassel of Valparaiso; a son, Paul H. Haven of Gainesville; and two grandchildren.

Elizabeth T. Holman

CEDAR KEY - Elizabeth T. Holman of Cedar Key died Wednesday at Ayers Health and Rehabilitation Center in Trenton. She was 96.

Mrs. Holman was born in Moncks Corner, S.C., and lived most of her life in Cedar Key. She was a homemaker who enjoyed music and playing the piano. She was a member and former treasurer of Cedar Key First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, W.L. Holman.

Survivors include sons Nathaniel T. Holman of Cedar Key and Herbert H. Holman of Silver Spring, Md.; a brother, DeWitt Taylor of Cedar Key; a sister, Madaline Richard of Milan; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Hallie Marjorie Neetz

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS - Hallie Marjorie Neetz died Tuesday at Life Care Center of Altamonte Springs. She was 80.

Born in Selma, Calif., Mrs. Neetz lived in Gainesville about 25 years before moving to Altamonte Springs last year.

She was a retired administrative assistant at Gainesville Regional Utilities and was a member of First Lutheran Church of Gainesville.

Survivors include her sister, Evelyn Hurn of Seal Beach, Calif.; and her daughter-in-law, Allene Neetz of Altamonte Springs.

Benjamin James Sr.

Benjamin James Sr. died Jan. 9 at Shands at the University of Florida following a brief illness. He was 64.

Mr. James was born in St. Augustine and moved here from St. Augustine 31 years ago. He was a transportation supervisor for the Alachua County School Board.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth James; daughters Beverly James of Tampa, Allison Oston of St. Augustine and Annette Hampton, Jeanette Cummings, Denise Williams and June Jackson, all of Gainesville; sons Benjamin James Jr. of Tallahassee and Michael James of Jacksonville; two sisters, Beverly Croombs of Tampa and Hortense Tookes of Tallahassee; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Jamesson Freitas

Jamesson "Aladin" Freitas of Gainesville died Sunday in an automobile accident in Tampa. He was 21.

A native of Bahia, Brazil, Mr. Freitas was a resident of Gainesville. He was an instructor in Capoeira, a Brazilian martial art that is more than 450 years old.

Mr. Freitas is survived by his parents, Antonio Freitas and Carmen Lopes of Bahia; and his close friend, Mestre Jelon Vieira.
