Paul Edward Howard

Dr. Paul Edward Howard died Tuesday at his residence in Gainesville. He was 79.

Dr. Howard was born in Akron, Ohio, and moved to Gainesville from Miami in 1993.

Before retirement, he had a general medical practice in Miami. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, flying B-17s from Sudbury, England. He completed 30 missions, retiring with the rank of captain.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Leona Hall Howard.

Survivors include sons Dr. Joseph Grady Howard of Cape Coral, James Hall Howard of Cooper City and John Paul Howard of Gainesville; daughters Dr. Catherine Howard Arrowood of Richmond, Va., and Ann Howard Thiele of Jacksonville; a brother, Robert Howard of Akron, Ohio; a sister, Agnes Ruth of Akron; and 13 grandchildren.

Robert Johns

STARKE - Robert "Speedy" Johns, a lifelong resident of Starke, died Thursday at the Hospice of North Central Florida. He was 72.

Mr. Johns was a dredge operator with DuPont and a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was a member of the First Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Eunice Johns of Starke; a son, Robert Johns of Starke; a daughter, Lynne Musgrove of Starke; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and three step-grandchildren.

Arrangements by National Cremation Society.

Mabel O. Jones

Mabel O. Jones of Jacksonville died Wednesday at Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville. She was 87.

The Lake City native served as postmaster with the U.S. Postal Service in Old Town.

She was a member of the Old Town Methodist Church.

She is survived by a son, Clarence H. Jones III of Jacksonville.

Jean M. Peterson

ARCHER - Jean M. Peterson of Archer died Tuesday at Ayers Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was 75.

A native of Antigua, British West Indies, Mrs. Peterson moved to Archer in 1945.

She was an office manager and a bookkeeper.

She was an Episcopalian.

Survivors include her husband, Richard U. Peterson of Archer; a son, Donald R. Peterson of Gainesville; a daughter, Denise Lyn of Gainesville; and a granddaughter.

Arrangements by National Cremation Society.

Devoe Sanderson

Devoe Sanderson of Gainesville died Monday at North Florida Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. He was 85.

Mr. Sanderson was born in Cleveland and moved to Gainesville from Vernon 21 years ago.

He was a Baptist and a truck driver.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Sanderson of Gainesville; a son, Devoe Sanderson Jr. of Texas; and daughters Carol and Charlotte Sanderson, both of Gainesville.

Richard Earl Tingle

DAY - Richard Earl Tingle of Day died Thursday in Perry. He was 73.

Mr. Tingle was born in Bridgeton, N.C., and moved to Day from Zephyrhills 16 years ago.

He was a member of Brewer Lake Baptist Church and North Florida Roadsiders. He served as president of the local chapter of the Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club.

He served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years and later worked as a corrections officer.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Lacourse Tingle of Day; sons Russell Tingle of Branford, Mass., Kenny Tingle of Thrall, Texas, and David Tingle of Day; brothers Billy, David, Bobby, Charles and Buddy Tingle, all of North Carolina; a sister, Betty Boyd of North Carolina; 13 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Robert Marion Wheeler

MAYO - Robert Marion Wheeler of Mayo died Friday in Lake City. He was 92.

A native of Cook County, Ga., Mr. Wheeler moved to Mayo in 1973.

Survivors include sons Robert E. Wheeler of Branford, James Wheeler of Oklahoma, Freddy Wheeler of Perry and Eddie Wheeler of Mayo; a daughter, Brenda Jackson of Mayo; a sister, Nell Ortmann of Plant City; and 14 grandchildren.

Faye Waters Adams

ALACHUA -- Faye Waters Adams of Alachua died Friday at North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville after a brief illness. She was 59.

Mrs. Adams was a homemaker and a former employee at Alachua County Collections Center.

Born in Lake Butler, she lived most of her life in Alachua.

She was a member of Countryside Baptist Church in Gainesville.

Survivors include her husband, Jimmy Adams of Alachua; a daughter, Sheila Adams of Alachua; two sons, Jimmy A. Adams and Shannon Adams, both of Alachua; two sisters, Virginia Lamb of Lake Butler and Ann Clark of Gainesville; four brothers, John Waters of High Springs, Lowell Waters and Jimmy Waters, both of Lake Butler, and Joe Waters of Dundee; and four grandchildren.

Samuel David Hughes

BROOKER -- Samuel David "Sammie" Hughes of Brooker died Sunday in Hospice House in Gainesville after an extended illness. He was 54.

Mr. Hughes was born in Jacksonville, where he lived most of his life, and moved to Brooker in 1996. He was a supervisor with BellSouth until retirement in 1995. Mr. Hughes was a member of the First Christian Church in Lake Butler and the Clayno Hunting Club.

Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by his father, James L. Hughes.

Survivors include his wife, Gail Carter Hughes of Brooker; two daughters and sons-in-law, Vicki and David Gable, and Jan and Phillip McDonald, all of Jacksonville; his mother, Maudelle Hughes Carroll of Jacksonville; a brother, Jimmy Hughes of Jacksonville; and five grandchildren.

Namon Jerrell Crabtree

WILLISTON -- Namon Jerrell Crabtree of Cartersville, Ga., died Sunday in Nature Coast Regional Hospital in Williston. He was 75.

Mr. Crabtree was born in Henagar, Ala., and moved to Williston in 1946, where he worked for M.L. Smith Construction and then joined his brothers at Crabtree Garage.

Mr. Crabtree built C&L; Welding in 1976 and retired in 1985. He was a shipyard welder during World War II and was a Baptist.

Survivors include his wife, Elvia Crabtree of Cartersville; one son, Paul Layton of Cartersville; three brothers, Lamar Crabtree of Williston, Buran Crabtree of Ringgold, Ga., and Howard Crabtree of Liberty, Mo.; one sister, Vonnell Short of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; one grandson, James Layton of Williston; and several nieces and nephews.

Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to First Baptist Church in Williston.

Joseph A. Lee

MELROSE -- Joseph A. Lee of Melrose died Saturday in his home. He was 36.

Mr. Lee was born in Gainesville and moved to Melrose from Johnson, where he was a lifelong resident, three months ago. He attended North Florida Junior College. He was a sheet metal contractor and member of Sheet Metal Local 435, and he attended Johnson Community Church.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanie Lee of Interlachen; his parents, James and Annette Lee of Johnson; two daughters, Brandi Rardon of Melrose and Brittney Lee of Claremont, N.H.; two sons, Brandon Lee of Claremont, N.H., and Taylor Lee of Interlachen; sister Angela Annette Low of Johnson; and maternal grandmother Julia Townsend of Cross Creek.

Lois Howard Smith

LAKE BUTLER -- Lois Howard Smith of Lake Butler died Saturday evening in her home after an extended illness. She was 85.

Mrs. Smith was born in Union, S.C., and had lived in Lake Butler for 62 years. She was a homemaker and a member of Faith Baptist Church.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Smith. Survivors include a daughter, Irene Driggers, and her husband, Donald Driggers; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Loretta K. Vogel

Loretta K. Vogel of Gainesville died Saturday in North Florida Regional Medical Center. She was 88.

Mrs. Vogel was born in Curtice, Ohio, and moved to Gainesville from St. Petersburg five years ago. She was a homemaker and a pianist and organist for churches in Ohio and St. Petersburg. Her hobbies included needlework, shell art and crossword puzzles. She attended Redeemer Lutheran Church in St. Petersburg.

Mrs. Vogel was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Howard H. Vogel.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law Nancy A. and Harvey Pleiman of Gainesville; son and daughter-in-law Jack H. and Anita Vogel of Bradenton; grandchildren Hugh McArthur of Tallahassee, Patricia Vogel of Charlotte, N.C., and James Vogel of Bradenton; and great-grandchildren Vanessa Vogel and Brooke Vogel, both of Bradenton, and Nathaniel Amos of Tallahassee.
