Carl D. Horsley

OLD TOWN -- Carl D. Horsley died Tuesday in his residence. He was 65.

Mr. Horsley was born in Pike County, Ohio. He worked as a supervisor of maintenance.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cheryl Horsley.

Mr. Horsley is survived by his father, Jack Reed of West Liberty, Ohio; his wife, Judy Horsley of Old Town; four sons, Kevin Horsley of Sanford, Dale Horsley of West Liberty, Ohio, Carl Horsley and Mike Horsley, both of Urbana, Ohio; four daughters, Roberta Murray of Mimms, Deborah Horsley of Old Town, Carla Tatom and Donna Hughes of Orlando; three brothers, Ernie Horsley of West Liberty, Ohio, Joe Horsley of Bellfountain, Ohio and Larry Reed of West Liberty, Ohio; five sisters, Viola Reed, Kitty Stanley and Margaret Truesdale, all of West Liberty, Ohio, Sissy Karns and Judy Cauley, both of Urbana, Ohio; and nine grandchildren.

Robert Eugene Murphy

ALACHUA -- Robert Eugene Murphy of Alachua died Monday at Shands at AGH following a brief illness. He was 55.

Mr. Murphy was born in Gainesville and moved to Alachua in the early 1950s.

He was a laborer and a member of St. Mathews Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include a sister, Delia M. Peterson of Fayetteville, N.C.; and an aunt and caretaker, Evelyn Welcome of Alachua.

Billy H. Newman Sr.

KEYSTONE HEIGHTS -- Billy H. Newman Sr. of Keystone Heights died Thursday at the Hospice House of Gainesville. He was 61.

Mr. Newman was born in Coffey County, Tenn., and moved to Keystone Heights from Hawthorne in 1979.

He was a carpenter and a member of the Keystone Heights First Assembly of God.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1957-1967.

Survivors include his wife, Syble Holt Newman of Keystone Heights; two daughters, Mary Guirate of Keystone Heights and Tina Crosby of High Springs; a son, Billy Newman Jr. of Dover, Del.; a sister, Dora Howland of Muscatine, Iowa; six grandchildren; and a great- grandchildren.

Mildred G. Roberts

CHESHIRE, Conn. -- Mildred G. "Towie" Roberts died July 7 at Elim Park Baptist Home. She was 93.

She was born in Waterbury, Conn., and moved to Florida in 1969.

Mrs. Roberts retired from Whispering Pines Care Center in Starke in 1988, and moved to Cheshire.

She is survived by a son, William Roberts of Waterbury; a sister, Grace Mutter of Cheshire; five grandchildren; and five great- grandchildren.

George Ralph Schwab

George Ralph Schwab of New Smyrna Beach died Wednesday in Homosassa. He was 67.

Mr. Schwab was born in Dayton, Ohio, and lived in Williston before moving to New Smyrna Beach.

He was a professional golfer and a member of the Coronado Community United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Schwab of New Smyrna Beach; a daughter, Mary Stokes of Belaire, Md.; two sons, Davis Schwab of Jacksonville and Robert Schwab of New Smyrna Beach; a brother, Harry Schwab Jr. of Dayton, Ohio; and six grandchildren.

Mayme Lois King Scott

Mayme Lois King Scott of Gainesville died Wednesday after an extended illness. She was 77.

She was born in Pavo, Ga., and had lived in Gainesville since 1932.

She retired from the Alachua County School Board lunchroom program after 26 years.

Mrs. Scott was a member of Eastside Baptist Church. She is described as having loved the Lord and set an example for her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Hayward Scott; and two brothers, Claude R. King and Pete King.

She is survived by three daughters, Laverne Burch and Denise Scott, both of Micanopy, and Marjorie Parker of Titusville; three sons, Walter Scott of Seligman, Mo., Alton Scott of Archer and Winfield Scott of Micanopy; three brothers, Douglas King of Hephzibah, Ga., Norman King of Elgin, S.C., and Donald King of Hague; six sisters, Betty Sue Munn, Mary Lou Vann, Wilma Jean Rippy and Mildred Benefield, all of Hague, Nora Lee Dalton of Newberry, Gladys Green of Quitman, Ga.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Ralph W. Kluge

JACKSONVILLE -- Ralph W. Kluge of Jacksonville died Monday at St. Luke's Hospital in Jacksonville. He was 93.

Mr. Kluge was the chairman of the civil engineering department at the University of Florida from 1952 to 1971. Involved in designing and testing lightweight concrete, he also wrote numerous technical articles for engineering publications and is listed in Who's Who in Engineering, American Men of Science and Who's Who in America.

Born in Chicago, he lived in Gainesville for 40 years before moving to Jacksonville four years ago.

He was a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Concrete Institute, a member of the American Society for Engineering Education, Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi and an honorary member of the Prestressed Concrete Institute.

Survivors include his wife, Mercedes Kluge of Jacksonville; two sons, Donald Kluge of Jacksonville and Paul Kluge of Columbia, Md.; a sister, Evelyn Samrascq of Arnold, Md.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Ann M. Lander

Ann M. Lander of Gainesville died Wednesday in Gainesville. She was 88.

Mrs. Lander was a former short-order cook and a salad girl at a restaurant.

Born in New Kensington, Pa., she moved from Erie, Pa., to Gainesville six years ago.

She was a Catholic.

Mrs. Lander was preceded in death by her husband, Norbert J. Lander.

Survivors include two sons, Joseph N. Lander of Gainesville and Edward F. Lander of Colleyville, Texas; a brother, Edward Smiadak of Fort Myers; a sister, Sophie Kobielski of Erie; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to Hospice of North Central Florida in Gainesville.

Lolly Mae Melton

CHIEFLAND - Lolly Mae Melton of Chiefland died Tuesday at Shands at AGH in Gainesville. She was 82.

Mrs. Melton was a homemaker and a member of Joppa Baptist Church.

Born in Macon, Ga., she moved from Cross City to Chiefland 56 years ago.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James B. Melton; and a daughter, Joyce E. Horne.

Survivors include two daughters, Evelyn Bluckhorn and Lola Deen Parker, both of Chiefland; three sons, James E. Melton of Odessa, Texas, Charles E. Melton of Mount Pleasant, N.C., and Loyd W. Melton of Jacksonville; 17 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Evelyn Lea Phillips

NEWBERRY -- Evelyn Lea Phillips of Newberry died Tuesday at her home. She was 76.

Mrs. Phillips was a former dental assistant at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Born in Bells, Tenn., she lived most of her life in Memphis before moving to Gainesville seven years ago.

She was a member of Providence Reformed Presbyterian Church of Bartlett, Tenn., and was a former president of the Dental Assistant Association in Memphis.

Survivors include a brother, Stacy Jack Lea of Newberry; and several nieces and nephews.

Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to Hospice of North Central Florida in Gainesville.

Onetta Darr Rudiger

Onetta Darr Rudiger of Gainesville died Monday at Shands at AGH after a long illness. She was 91.

Mrs. Rudiger was a homemaker.

Born in Coshocton, Ohio, she moved from Williston to Gainesville 14 years ago.

She was a member of First Baptist Church and Highland Missionary Baptist Church and was a former member of Williston Woman's Club and the Association of American Retired Persons.

Survivors include a nephew, Arthur W. Darr Sr. of Canton, Ohio.

Jeffrie Christian Tate

Jeffrie Christian Tate of Virginia Beach, Va., died Saturday in Virginia Beach. He was 22.

Mr. Tate was a petty officer third class, squadron No. VFA-81 in the U.S. Navy. He was voted best plane captain and best sunliner of the month.

He was born in Gainesville, and moved from Gainesville to Virginia Beach two months ago.

He attended Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C., and Daytona Beach Community College. He was voted best-looking his senior year at Seabreeze High School in Ormond Beach, where he played football.

Mr. Tate enjoyed sports and the outdoors.

Survivors include his father, Johnny Tate of Lexington, S.C.; his mother, Carol Tate of Gainesville; a brother, Bryian Parker of Hickory, N.C.; two sisters, Jennifer Davis of Fellsmere and Suzanne Hessler of Nashville, Tenn.; and his paternal grandparents, Howard and Evelyn Tate of Eastman, Ga.
