Leslie Leroy Baggesen

Leslie Leroy "Rusty" Baggesen of St. Augustine died Thursday. He was 55.

The former Gainesville resident was a painter.

Survivors include sisters Connie LaPearle and Theresa Baggesen, both of Gainesville, and Debra Smith of St. Augustine; and brothers Harold Baggesen of St. Augustine and Larry Belcher of Interlachen.

Calvin Cleveland Bryan

CHIEFLAND - Calvin Cleveland Bryan died Monday at his residence. He was 67.

Mr. Bryan moved to Chiefland from Gainesville 30 years ago.

He was a Baptist and a retired supervisor with Koppers. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

He was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Bryan.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Bryan of Chiefland; a daughter, Patty Dease of Chiefland; sons Cleve Bryan of Chiefland and Ronald Bryan of Trenton; brothers George "Duke" Bryan of Gainesville and Sherman Bryan of Archer; and five grandchildren.

Robert Lee Dekle

LAKE CITY - Robert Lee Dekle died Monday at his residence. He was 72.

Mr. Dekle was born in Miccosukee and lived in Lake Butler and Lake City most of his life.

He was an installer and repairman for Southern Bell, retiring after 33 years. He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church in Lake City.

Survivors include his wife, Vivian A. Dekle of Lake City; a daughter, Annette Dekle All of Allendale, S.C.; a son, Robert Sherwood Dekle of Lake City; sisters Pat Johns of Lake Butler, Donna Coleman of Lake City and Mary Frances Lewis of Wellborn; brothers Billy and Richard Dekle, both of Lake City; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Charlotte B. Eddy

Charlotte B. Eddy of Gainesville died Tuesday at Shands at the University of Florida. She was 78.

Mrs. Eddy was born in Columbus, Ind., and moved to Gainesville from Pembroke Pines in 1986.

She was a homemaker and a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, William Eddy of Gainesville; a daughter, Karen Wilson of Hurst, Texas; sons David Eddy of Ocala and William B. Eddy of Tallahassee; and six grandchildren.

Dorothy Lee Griffis

n STARKE - Dorothy Lee Griffis, a lifelong resident of Starke, died Tuesday at North Florida Regional Medical Center. She was 77.

Mrs. Griffis was a homemaker and a member of the Victory Revival Church in Starke.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Melton Griffis; and a son, Jimmy Griffis.

Survivors include daughters Hazel Johnson and Patsy Luke, both of Starke, and Juanita Willingham of Lawtey; sons Robert, Raymond and Mitchell Griffin, all of Lawtey; sisters Lois Waldron of Willacoochee, Ga., Bessie Warren of Jacksonville, Gladys Gutierrez of Lakeland, Barbara Robinson of Douglas, Ga., and Ruth Tyler of Starke; brothers Buddy Cadle of Waycross, Ga., Luther Cadle of Starke and Walter Cadle of Lake Panasoffkee; 21 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Horace Lester Harrington

n ALACHUA - Horace Lester Harrington, a lifelong resident of Alachua, died Saturday in Gainesville. He was 58.

Mrs. Harrington worked on an assembly line making batteries at Moltec Inc. He served in the U.S. Air Force.

Survivors include sisters Bettye Harrington Purvis, Bobbie Jean Harrington Owens and Mary Francis Harrington McFarland, all of Alachua; and brothers Harvey Eugene and James Thomas Harrington Jr., both of Miami, and John R. Harrington of Gainesville.

Paul A. Jenkins

HAWTHORNE - Paul A. Jenkins died Monday at Shands at AGH. He was 86.

Mr. Jenkins was born in Weaubleau, Mo., and moved to Hawthorne from Jacksonville 26 years ago.

He was a retired conductor with the Seaboard Coastline Railroad and a member of United Transportation Union and Westminster Presbyterian Church of Gainesville.

Survivors include his companion, Loretta F. Person of Hawthorne; sons Joseph C. Jenkins of Hawthorne and James Timothy Jenkins of Clermont; a sister, Betty Roberts of New Smyrna Beach; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Rufus Broward Ward Jr.

Rufus Broward Ward Jr. of Atlanta died Sunday in Atlanta. He was 48.

The Gainesville native was an Episcopalian.

Local survivors include his parents, Jean and Rufus B. Ward Sr. of Lake City.

Myrtie A. Gaskins

STARKE - Myrtie A. Gaskins died Monday at North Florida Regional Medical Center. She was 88.

She was born in Lawtey and lived in Bradford County her entire life.

She attended Bradford County Schools and was a member of Northside Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Wade Gaskins; sons James Gaskins and Arthur Gaskins; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.

Stanley Richard Moyer

Stanley Richard Moyer died Wednesday at The Oaks in Gainesville. He was 80.

He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., and moved to Gainesville from Sanford 20 years ago.

He was a commercial artist and professional photographer. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He also helped design and build some of the first computers in the country.

He was Mennonite.

Survivors include his friend and caregiver, Jeffrey Young, and friend John Osley.

William F. Riley

LAKE BUTLER - William "Bill" F. Riley died Christmas morning after an apparent heart attack. He was 55.

Mr. Riley was born in Coco and lived in Lake Butler for 30 years. He was a sergeant with the Department of Corrections, where he worked with the New River Correctional Institution in Raiford. He also work for the Union County Sheriff's Office and was an auxiliary deputy and a member of the Union County Volunteer Ambulance Service. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Anne R. Riley of Lake Butler; his son, Travis Riley of Virginia Beach, Va.; his mother and stepfather Mae and Vernon Prevatt of Lake City, stepsons John Wynn and Calvin Haight, both of Lake Butler; a sister, Melissa Harwood of Oklahoma City; and three grandchildren.

Clarence Arnold "Butch" Prevatt,

Longtime newsman Prevatt dies

Butch Prevatt of Gainesville died Sunday at North Florida Regional Medical Center following complications in the treatment of stomach and liver cancer. He was 49.

The Hastings native was a newsman for 30 years. He began his career with the Palatka Daily News, working as a stringer during his high school years. After brief stints with papers in Fernandina Beach and Jacksonville, he returned to the Palatka newspaper, where he worked for the remainder of his career.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence A. and Earie Prevatt, and a sister, Pearl Marie Fisher.

He is survived by his partner, Mark Bass of Gainesville; a sister, Mary Frances Noles of Shreveport, La.; and two brothers, Richard Albert Prevatt and Henry Robert Prevatt Sr., both of St. Augustine.

A memorial service will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Beasley Middle School auditorium in Palatka. Visitation will be 2-3 p.m.

Lucy Vann Bareuther

STEINHATCHEE -- Lucy Vann Bareuther of Steinhatchee died Tuesday at Shands at AGH. She was 73.

Mrs. Bareuther was born in Swainsboro, Ga., and moved to Steinhatchee from Williston.

She was a retired bookkeeper with NASA and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Survivors include her husband, Frank Bareuther of Steinhatchee; and two sisters, Virginia Snooks of Swainsboro, Ga., and Debra La Boise of Binghamton, N.Y.

Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to the American Lung Association.
