Joseph E. Brogan, 85, of OTOW

Joseph E. Brogan, of OTOW, died Friday, May 23, 2003, at his residence. A native of Waterloo, Iowa, he resided in the Ocala area since 1985, formerly of Arlington Heights, Ill. He was 85.

Mr. Brogan was district rate manager for Illinois Bell Telephone. He was a member of Countryside Presbyterian Church, Ocala. He served in the U.S. Army and a veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Marion; son, Thomas Mark Brogan of Ashburn, Va.; and a daughter, Betsy Ann Brogan of Chicago, Ill.

Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services, TimberRidge Chapel, handled the arrangements.

Helen M. Gorton, 91, of Leesburg

Helen M. Gorton, of Leesburg, died Monday, May 19, 2003, at Leesburg Regional Medical Center. A native of New Haven, Conn., she moved to Leesburg in 2001 after having lived at On Top of the World in Ocala for four years. She was 91.

Ms. Gorton was a retired seamstress. She was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church.

Survivors include her brother, William Pavlovich of North Haven, Conn.; sisters, Mary Houston of New Haven, and Margaret De Rosa of Hamden, Conn.

Roberts Funeral Home, Bruce Chapel West, Ocala, provided information.

Mary Majewski, 73, of Pine Run

Mary Majewski, of Pine Run, died Monday, May 19, 2003, at Munroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala. A native of Schuykill County, Pa., she resided in the Florida area since 1987, formerly of New Britain, Conn. She was 73.

Mrs. Majewski was an administrative assistant.

Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Alexander; two sons, Gregory Majewski of Oakdale, Conn., and Michael Majewski of New Britain, Conn.; daughter, Debrah Plumbo of Hamden, Conn.; son, Daniel Majewski of New Britain, Conn.; 10 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services, TimberRidge Chapel, handled the arrangements.

Frederick V. Schnurle, 86, of OTOW

Frederick V. Schnurle, of OTOW, died Sunday, May 18, 2003 at his residence. A native of Portland, Maine, he resided in the Ocala area since 1992, formerly of Canisteo, N.Y. He was 86.

Mr. Schnurle was a retired owner of Schnurle & Son Insurance Agency. He was a member of Church of The Advent, Dunnellon, and a member of the American Legion Post 846 in Canisteo, N.Y. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during World War II.

Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Nancy; daughter, Beverly J. Taylor of Ocala; son, Gregory Schnurle of Canisteo, N.Y.; two stepdaughters, Maureen Tighe of Albany, N.Y. and Sharon Tighe of Canandaigua, N.Y.; three grandchildren and two great- grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Schnurle in 1982.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Advent Building Fund, Dunnellon.

Paul H. Carman, 91, of Dunnellon

Paul Herbert Carman, of Dunnellon, died Friday, April 25, 2003, in Dunnellon. A native of Lake Preston, S.D., he came here in 1987 from Livonia, Mich. He was 91.

Mr. Carman was a retired newspaper editor for the Detroit News. He started the Omaha Bee News and worked there from 1931 to 1934. He was also an editor for the Des Moines Register from 1934 to 1955, and the Detroit News from 1955 to 1976. He wrote the stylebook for the Detroit News. In 1971 he was one of two editors who were removed from regular duties and assigned to a project to make the Detroit News the world's first newspaper with a computerized newsroom. The project succeeded and was rapidly copied by other newspapers.

Mr. Carman attended the Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Trace Carman.

Survivors include his son, John Elwin Carman of San Francisco, Calif.; daughter, Anne Marie Christensen of Dunnellon; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial contributions be made in Mr. Carman's honor to Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church of Citrus Springs or to Hospice of Marion County.

W. Curtis Gray, 78, of OTOW

W. Curtis "Curt" Gray, of OTOW, died Thursday, April 24, 2003, at home. A native of Virginia, he moved here in 1989 from Largo. He was 78.

Mr. Gray was a retired electrical engineer for General Electric. He was of the Methodist faith. He was a member of the General Electric Elfun Society, Pi Kappa Phi and was a computer operator for On Top of the World Golf Association. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Marjorie B; daughters, Barbara Guthrie of Highland Springs, Va., and Jean Enk of Lynchburg, Va.; sister, Evelyn Blair of Galax, Va.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Marion County.

Ernest R. Johnson, 81, of OTOW

Ernest R. Johnson, of OTOW, died Sunday, April 27, 2003, at West Marion Community Hospital, Ocala. A native of Worcester, Mass., he has resided in the Ocala area since 1991, formerly of Spencer, Mass. He was 81.

Mr. Johnson was a retired foreman with Crompton & Knowles in Worcester, Mass., with 40 years of service. He was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Ocala.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Lucille Johnson, April 5, 2003.

Survivors include a sister, Marie Barber of Worcester, Mass.; and a goddaughter, Lucille Arnold of Brandywine, Md.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Marion County, P.O. Box 4860, Ocala, Fla. 34478.

John W. Poole, 81, of Ocala

John W. Poole, of Ocala, died on Monday, April 28, 2003, at Estelle's House in Ocala. A native of Freborn, Minn., he came to Ocala in 1985 from Estherville, Iowa. He was 81.

Mr. Poole was a retired engineer for Rock Island Railroad. He spent 48 years on the railroad, working his way from fireman to engineer before retiring to Florida. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a life member of VFW Post 3398, Estherville, Iowa. He was a member of Timber Ridge Community Church of Ocala.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 24 years, Gladys B.: son, Dennis Poole of Longmont, Colo.; daughters, Laura Lee Schumacher of Bloomington, Ill., and Ruth Ann Griffin of Red Wing, Minn.; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Eleanor R. Raymond, 84, of OTOW

Eleanor "Ellie" Ruth Raymond, of OTOW, died Sunday, April 20, 2003, at Munroe Regional Medical Center. A native of Cleveland, she moved here from Shaker Heights, Ohio, in 1988. She was 84.

Mrs. Raymond was a homemaker and a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Cleveland. She was Ohio State University Homecoming Queen of 1939.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, W. Robert; sons, Ronald D. Raymond of Cleveland and Edward W. Raymond of Ann Arbor, Mich.; daughters, Sharyn Raymond Loosh of Coldwater, Mich., and Bo Raymond of Ocala; brother, Ralph Duncan of Maple Heights, Ohio; seven grandchildren and five great- grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Parkinson's Association, c/o Brain Institute of Florida, P.O. Box 100015, Gainesville, Fla. 32610.

Geraldine M. Wells, 92, of Marion Oaks

Geraldine M. Wells, of Marion Oaks, died Thursday, April 24, 2003, at Summerfield Hospice Suites in Summerfield. A native of Abbington, Mass., she moved here in 1979 from Dedham, Mass. She was 92.

Mrs. Wells was a retired secretary for Zayre Corp. She was a member of St. Jude's Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, Marion Oaks Neighborhood Watch and Knights of Columbus Auxiliary Council No. 8012.

Survivors include her daughter, Cheryl G. Frasca of Ocala, and a sister, Margaret Donovan of Rochester, N.H.

Miriam Andrews, 83, of Fairfield Village

Miriam Andrews, of Fairfield Village, died Monday, April 21, 2003, at Sylvia's Hospice House. A native of North Weymouth, Mass., she moved here in 1982 from Miami. She was 83.

Mrs. Andrews was a homemaker and a member of Joy Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Scandinavian Club.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, James C.; son, James C. Andrews Jr. of Plant City; daughter, Linda Andrews of Tallahassee; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sylvia's Hospice House of Hospice of Marion County.

Caleb S. Booth, of Whispering Pines

Caleb Scott Booth, of Whispering Pines, died Saturday, May 10, 2003, in Gainesville. He was born on Dec. 8, 2001 in Bethesda, Md. He was 17 months old.

He was a member of North Oak Baptist Church.

Survivors include his father and mother, Tracey and Andrea Booth, active duty Air Force, currently stationed in Ramstein, Germany; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Selemba of Ocala; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Coffey of Hernando; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James McCray of Grand Prairie, Texas.
