Helen Brown, 98 Crystal River

Helen F. Brown, 98, Crystal River, died Thursday morning, Sept. 11, 2003, at Crystal River Health and Rehabilitation Center in Crystal River.

Ms. Brown was born Jan. 29, 1905, in Detroit, Mich., to Glen and Francis Brown and moved to this area 36 years ago.

She retired from the Packard Motor Car Company in Detroit as a secretary.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Crystal River.

She is survived by five first cousins.

Viola Campbell, 91 Inverness

Viola Eurena Campbell, 91, Inverness, died Friday, Sept. 12, 2003, at Mariner Health Care of Inverness.

She was born Aug. 13, 1912, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada to Otto C. and Mary B. (Jones) Wilson and came here 30 years ago from Tampa.

Mrs. Campbell was a retired office clerk in the insurance industry.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ian Campbell, on Nov. 2, 1998, and her daughter, Mary Jean Campbell, in 1943.

Survivors include one daughter, Janice M. Porter of Plant City; one son, Brian E. Campbell of Tampa; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Barbara Clayton, 68 Homosassa

Barbara Ellen Clayton, 68, Homosassa, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, at Cypress Cove Care Center in Crystal River.

She was born Jan. 22, 1935, in Clarksburg, W. Va., to Clinton and Ocie Bochert and came to this area five years ago from Sarasota.

Mrs. Clayton was a homemaker and a loving mother and grandmother.

She was a member of the Homosassa Lions Club.

She was Methodist.

Surviving are three sons, Mark Clayton of Homosassa, Paul and Curt Clayton, both of Sarasota; one daughter, Melinda Clayton of Homosassa; and seven grandchildren.

Liberco Coutinho, 79 Beverly Hills

Liberco Coutinho, 79, Beverly Hills, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, in Inverness.

Born Aug. 18, 1924, in Taunton, Mass., to Jerome and Amelia (Santos) Coutinho, he came here in 1986 from Pawtucket. R.I.

Mr. Coutinho was a retired plant superintendent for a rubber/thread company.

He was a World War II U.S. Marine Corps tank commander with the 1st Marine Division; member of the 1st Marine Division Association; member of the Marine Corps League Citrus Detachment 819, Beverly Hills; life member Veterans of Foreign Wars Harry F. Nesbitt Post 10087, Beverly Hills; and a member of China Marines.

He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Beverly Hills.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Rita B. Coutinho of Beverly Hills; son and daughter-in-law, Henry J. and Linda Coutinho of Crystal River; two sisters, Alice Ribeiro of Beverly Hills and Hilda Fresta of Taunton, Mass.; three granddaughters; and two great-grandsons.

William Hicks, 74 Floral City

William J. Hicks, 74, Floral City, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, in Floral City.

Born April 22, 1929, in Liberty, Ky., to Johnny and Lula Mae Hicks, he came to this area in 1986 from Franklin, Ind.

Mr. Hicks was a truck driver and a U.S. Army Korea veteran.

Surviving are three sons, Lester Maxfield of Hernando, Larry Hicks of Floral City and David Hicks of Boynton Beach; three daughters, Donna Menteer of Nineveh, Ind., Betty Gabehart of Liberty, Ky., and Brenda Hicks of Kokomo, Ind.; two brothers, James Hicks and Dale Hicks, both of Liberty, Ky.; one sister, Phyllis Ann Lyons of Campbellsville, Ky.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Kenneth Cassidy, 84 Beverly Hills

Kenneth Eugene Cassidy, 84, Beverly Hills, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003, in Inverness.

Born in Stoystown, Pa., he came here 20 years ago from West Palm Beach.

Mr. Cassidy was a retired plasterer in the construction industry and a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

He enjoyed watching his grandsons play Little League Baseball.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Gray Cassidy, on July 30, 1999, and son, Dale Cassidy.

Survivors include two daughters, Jamie Brooks of Floral City and Kenann Cassidy of Hernando; one son, Larry Cassidy of Hernando; a sister, Evelyn Bele of Edgewater; a nephew, Howard Wright of Beverly Hills; 12 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Citrus County or the American Cancer Society.

Oma Keller, 87 Hernando

Oma H. Keller, 87, Hernando, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2003, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, Ind.

She was born Sept. 8, 1915, in Magoffin County, Kentucky, to John M. and Dora (Wireman) Howard. She lived in Hernando and spent her summers in Fremont, Ind.

Mrs. Keller was a homemaker and a member of Dunnellon South Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, Dunnellon, also actively associated with The Fremont Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, Fremont, Ind. Since 1942 she was very active with The Jehovah's Witness Ministry sharing and teaching the Bible.

She enjoyed the outdoors and her cows.

She was preceded in death by Cecil B. Coburn and David W. Keller, first and second husbands; two sons, Cecil J. Coburn and John M. Coburn; and one sister, Blancha Neely.

Survivors include two sons, Joe E. Coburn of Hernando and Ronald D. Keller of Fremont, Ind.; one stepson, William E. Keller of West Unity, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

R.L. 'Lee' Lamb, 38 Dunnellon

R.L. "Lee" Lamb, 38, Dunnellon, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003.

Born in Gainesville, he was a lifelong resident.

Mr. Lamb was owner of R.L. Tree Service.

Survivors include four children, Alex, Eric, Nicole and Julia Lamb, all of Dunnellon; brother, Marvin Lamb of Levy County; and sister, Susan Touchton of Inverness.

Albert 'Al' Macko, 75 Inverness

Albert "Al" Macko, 75, Inverness, died Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, in Inverness.

He was born Oct. 15, 1927, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada to George and Theresa Macko and moved here in 1980 from Dearborn, Mich.

Mr. Macko was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a retired truck driver. He was a security officer for Black Diamond and a member of the Teamsters.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Ellie Macko of Inverness; sons, Scott Macko and his wife, Lori, of Erie, Mich., and Randy Macko and his wife, Vicki, of Hernando; a brother, Peter Toth and his wife, Vivian, of Lecanto; five sisters, Gloria Sorrell and Helen Eckert both of Windsor, Ontario, Ann Tyler of Hot Springs, Ark., Bertha Papp of Dearborn, Mich., and Mary Mortiz of Seymour, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews.

John Van Der Leest, 83 Beverly Hills

John Henry Van Der Leest, 83, Beverly Hills, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003, at his home.

He was born March 13, 1920, in Green Bay, Wis., to Frank and Elma Van Der Leest and moved here in 1985.

Mr. Van Der Leest was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. He was a retired truck driver.

He was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Hernando and the Teamsters Union No. 75 in Green Bay, Wis.

Survivors include his wife, Florence Van Der Leest of Beverly Hills; two daughters, Judi Bostian of Glendale, Ariz., and Barbara Thompson of Mobile, Ala.; one son, Lawrence Van Der Leest and his wife, Ann, of Mercer, Wis.; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
