Herman Hadley, 82 Inverness

Herman Allen Hadley, 82, Inverness, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003, at home under the care of his family.

Born April 2, 1921, in Rabun, Ala., to Hazie and Gillie (Long) Hadley, he moved here in 1972 from Miami.

Mr. Hadley retired from the Powell Brothers Crane Service of Miami as a crane operator with more than 25 years of service.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II having discharged in 1946 as a sergeant.

Mr. Hadley was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 487 of Miami, First Baptist Church of Floral City, Marine Corps League Citrus Detachment 819 and served as past president of the Citrus County Horse Club.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Hadley; two daughters, Dawn Gruzdas of Inverness and Lereline Adams of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two stepsons, Charles "Corky" Hoff of Ocala and Gregory Teel of Inverness; three stepdaughters, Lutea Wright, Peggy Burns and Sherry Hoff, all of Inverness; five brothers, Jessie, Louis, Isaac and Vaton, all of Summerdale, Ala., and Leslie of Moscow, Tenn.; five sisters, Iva Mediate of Monticello, Bertie Geci, Irma Hadley, Mary Cox and Mattie Jane Sherman, all of Summerdale, Ala.; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Clifford Martin, 71 Hernando/Holder

Clifford H. "Cliff" Martin, 71, Hernando/Holder, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003, in Lecanto.

Born Feb. 21, 1932, in Salem, Va., to Luther H. and Beulah A. (Simons) Martin, he moved here three years ago from Philippi, W.Va.

Mr. Martin retired in 1997 with 17 years as a salesman for Curtis Noll Industry, main branch Eastlake, Ohio.

He was a member of Joy and Worship Church of Beverly Hills, past trustee at Chapel of Hope Church, Buchanan, W.Va., and past member of Moose Club in Philippi, W.Va.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Joyce E. Martin of Holder; three sons, Clifford H. Martin Jr. and Victor Martin, both of Maryland, and Vance Martin of Virginia; stepson, Edward Cale of North Carolina; two daughters, Denelda Riley of Virginia and Lorie Martin of Holder; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Cynthia Barker.

O'Neal McDougald, 67 Floral City

O'Neal Nathaniel McDougald, 67, Floral City, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003, in Leesburg.

A native of Samson, Ala., he was born July 10, 1936, to Nathaniel and Bernice McDougald. He moved here in 1988 from Hernando County.

Mr. McDougald was the former owner and operator of Mac's Place in Floral City.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He was Baptist.

Survivors include two sons, Jimmy (Vicky) McDougald of Cairo, Ga., and Timmy (Charlotte) McDougald of Brooksville; one daughter, Kathy (Cliff) Daughtry of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; three stepbrothers, LaDue Cooper and Maxi Cooper, both of Lakeland, and Jimmy Cooper of Lake Panasoffkee; two stepsisters, Nadine Scarborough of Elba, Ala., and Elaine Allen of Opp, Ala.; and five grandchildren.

Gaines Phillips, 46Salem, N.J.

Gaines Lee Phillips, 46, Salem, N.J., died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at Salem Memorial Hospital.

He was born Aug. 18, 1957, in Galveston, Texas, to William Earl and Sarah N. (Bennett) Phillips.

Mr. Phillips was a nuclear coating specialist for the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades Local 1331.

He loved hunting, fishing and gardening.

He was Catholic.

Survivors include his parents, William Earl and Sarah N. Phillips of Homosassa; wife, Lorraine S. Phillips of Salem, N.J.; daughter, Tiffany Phillips of Salem, N.J.; brother and sister-in-law, William A. Phillips (Dyann) of Middleburg; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Kathy (Kevin) McCarthy of New Orleans, La., Sarah Marie (Leonard) Clewett of Lancaster, Pa., Wendy P. (Scott) Leftwich of Brentwood, Tenn., and Jessica (Barry) Tierce of Fort Myers; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations requested to his daughter's school, Elsinboro Elementary School, Fort Elfsborg Road, Salem, N.J.

Thelma Rookstool, 87 Dunnellon

Thelma Alice Rookstool, 87, Dunnellon, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at her home.

Born Feb. 18, 1916, in rural Marion County to James A. Parker Sr. and Bertha Ogle Parker, she moved to Dunnellon more than 20 years ago from Amarillo, Texas, where she had been employed as a Southern Bell Telephone operator for many years.

She is survived by one brother, James A. "Buddy" Parker Jr. of Dunnellon; three sisters, Iris Fero of Dunnellon, OlaMae Blackburn of Brooksville and Ruby Sizer of Moorsville, N.C.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Rookstool.

Gerald Dumas, 70 Raleigh, N.C.

Gerald Robert Dumas, 70, Raleigh, N.C., formerly of Crystal River and Levittown, N.Y., died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003.

He was born June 8, 1933, in Bronx, N.Y., to William and Margaret Dumas.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy who served during the Korean War.

Dumas retired after 36 years as an employee and manager at American Airlines at both LaGuardia and JFK international airports in New York.

His wife, Patricia, preceded him in death in October.

Survivors include his son, Gerald W. Dumas of Bolton Landing, N.Y.; two daughters, Catherine Ann Lyons and her husband, Michael, of Raleigh, N.C., and Theresa Ann Dumas of Bellmore, N.Y.; a brother, William E. Dumas of New York City, N.Y.; and four grandchildren.

Mark Messenger, 51 Dunnellon

Mark A. Messenger, 51, Dunnellon, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, in Ocala.

He was born in Flint, Mich., and moved to the area in 1981 from there.

He worked as a machinist for Grimes AeroSpace (Allied).

He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam.

Survivors include his wife, Dawn Messenger of Dunnellon; two sons, Chad Messenger and Mathew Messenger, both of Dunnellon; daughter, Melissa Williams of Ocala; parents, Ralph and Gloria Messenger of Dunnellon; and five sisters, Linda Winningham of Ocala, Becky Skinner of Flint, Mich., Cindy Messenger of Spring City, Tenn., Bonnie Elderkin of Ocala and Melody Hardigan of Messena, N.Y.

Sue G. Roberson, 82, Inverness, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at Citrus Memorial Hospital in Inverness.

She was born July 9, 1921, in McCall, S.C., to Howard and Delightal Grice.

She was an administrative assistant for the government.

She was Methodist.

Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Robert Roberson of Inverness; daughter, Pamela McKinney of Inverness; a grandson; and a great-granddaughter.

Ruth Teed, 86 Dunnellon

Ruth Virginia Teed, 86, Dunnellon, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, in Dunnellon.

She was born in Dorchester, Mass. She moved to the area in 1984 from Naples, Maine.

She was a registered nurse.

She was a member of the Raynham Teachers Association and Chapter 143 of the Square Wheelers. She was a member of St. Margaret Episcopal Church in Inverness.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Norman B. Teed of Dunnellon; four sons, Don B. Teed and his wife, Marjorie, of Pocasset, Mass., Norman A. Teed and his wife, Virginia, of Raynham, Mass., Richard W. Teed and his wife, Dianne, of New Buryport, Mass., and Bruce E. Teed and his wife, Dee, of Leeds, Mass.; daughter, Denice L. Minardi of Exter, N.H.; brother, James R. Critchett of Silverton, Idaho; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
