John Maiden

APRIL 18, 1928 -- MARCH 27, 2004

ORMOND BEACH -- John Milton Max Maiden, 75, of Vanderbilt Drive, a retired builder, died Saturday at Emory L. Bennett Memorial Veterans Nursing Home, Daytona Beach.

Mr. Maiden, an Army veteran, was born in Glendale, Va., and came here in 1965 from Bristol, Va. He was a member of Covenant United Methodist Church, Port Orange and the Lions Club in Daytona Beach Shores. He enjoyed watching sports.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Kitty; a son, Gary, and three daughters, Phyllis Cervantes, Terry Conard and Patricia Sparks, all of Ormond Beach; a sister, Rebecca Maiden, Greenwich Village, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Alavon Direct Cremation, South Daytona, is in charge.

Anthony Nelson

AUG. 20, 1974 -- MARCH 26, 2004

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Anthony Louis "Tony" Nelson, 29, of Pioneer Trail, a construction worker for F&M Concrete, died Friday in an automobile accident on Massey and Edgewater Canal roads in Edgewater.

Mr. Nelson came here in 2003 from his native Detroit. He enjoyed charter fishing, riding four-wheelers and the ocean.

Survivors include his wife, Candice; a son, Anthony Cotton, and a daughter, Ciera Cotton; a stepson, Stoney Anderson; his mother, Lori McMillan, New Smyrna Beach; a sister, Melanie Ehrlich, Edgewater; and his maternal grandmother, Lillian Chumita, New Smyrna Beach. Settle-Wilder, New Smyrna Beach, is in charge.

William O'Neill

JULY 24, 1939 -- MARCH 27, 2004

ORMOND BEACH -- William F. O'Neill, 64, a firefighter for the City of Paterson, N.J., for 25 years before his retirement, died Saturday at Florida Hospital-Ormond Memorial.

Mr. O'Neill, an Army veteran, came here in 1991 from his native Paterson. He enjoyed reading and fishing.

Survivors include his wife of 14 years, Joanne; a son, William, Highland Lakes, N.J.; a daughter, Nancy Jodice, Blooming Grove, N.Y.; two brothers, James, Little Falls, N.J., and Jerry, Manteo, N.C.; two sisters, Judy Hauswirth, Ewing, N.J., and Jeannie Bernroth, Paterson; and 11 grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 1620 S. Clyde Morris Blvd., Suite 300, Daytona Beach, FL 32114. Ormond Funeral Home is in charge.

Francis Rothwell

JULY 13, 1911 -- MARCH 28, 2004

DELTONA -- Francis E. Rothwell, 81, of Alladin Drive, a former vice president of Lumberman's Mutual Insurance Co., Boston, died Sunday at Hospice Care Center, Port Orange.

Mr. Rothwell, a native of Fairhaven, Mass., also worked for Westinghouse Corp. in Fort Lauderdale. A graduate of Bentley College, Boston, he was an avid reader.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Virginia; a son, Richard, Cincinnati; a daughter, Carol Atkins, Newington, Conn.; a stepson, Terence McGuire, Erie, Pa.; a stepdaughter, Virginia Huffman, Atlantic Beach; 15 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Baldauff, Orange City, is in charge.

Izler Sanders

SEPT. 9, 1945 -- MARCH 27, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- Izler "Fletcher" Sanders, 58, of Division Street, a resident since 1952, died Saturday at home.

Mr. Sanders, a former farm worker, came here from his native Round O, S.C. He attended Mount Bethel Institutional Baptist Church.

Survivors include four brothers, Savin, Herod, Edward and Heywood, and a sister, Rose Coachran, all of Round O; and a cousin, Barbara Cooper, Daytona Beach, who provided for his care. Thompson is in charge.

Eilene Sauders

OCT. 3, 1924 -- MARCH 27, 2004

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Eilene Sauders, 79, of Ocean Avenue, a resident since 1959, died Saturday at Hospice Care Center, Port Orange.

Mrs. Sauders, a homemaker, was born in Bluffton, Ind., and came here from Nashville, Mich. She was a member of the Ladies of Elks Lodge No. 1557 and the Lupus Support Group. Mrs. Sauders enjoyed sewing, crafts and reading.

Survivors include two daughters, B.J. Lamie, Dover, Ark., and Geri Huckendubler, Copemish, Mich.; four brothers, Fred Huss, Caledonia, Mich., Dick Huss, Dowling, Mich., and Bill Huss and Butch Bollinger, both of Vermontville, Mich.; three sisters, Marge Shaw, MacClenny, and Betty Smith and Lou Faulkner, both of Nashville, Mich.; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. James Webster

JULY 9, 1940 -- MARCH 27, 2004

DELTONA -- James Harris Webster, 63, of Captain Drive, a communications systems engineer for a railroad company before his retirement, died Saturday at home.

Mr. Webster, 63, a Army veteran, was born in Birmingham, Ala., and came here in 2003 from Springfield, Mo. He enjoyed oil painting.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Brenda; a son, Allen, Springfield; a daughter, Tanya Isaacs, Orlando; a brother, Stanley, Fayetteville, N.C.; and two grandchildren. Wendell Wegelin

AUG. 2, 1921 -- MARCH 27, 2004

CASSADAGA -- Wendell Wegelin, 82, of Seneca Street, a retired inspector for McDonnell Douglas, died Saturday at Florida Hospital-South, Orlando.

Mr. Wegelin, a Navy veteran of World War II, was born in Stamford, Conn., and came here in 1994 from Titusville. He was a member of Colby Memorial Temple and the Moose Lodge in Titusville.

Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Dorothy; four sons, Wendell Wegelin, Rockledge, Stan Junk, Melbourne, and David and Dan Junk, both of Cape Canaveral; three daughters, Candace Singletary, Bradenton, Barbara Brooks, Rockledge, and Laura Tobin, Merritt Island; a brother, Phillip, Colts Neck, N.J.; a sister, Libby Montag, Westfield, N.J.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. John West

MAY 26, 1923 -- MARCH 27, 2004

ORANGE CITY -- John R. West, 80, of East Oak Lane, a resident since 1988, died Saturday at home.

Mr. West, a Navy veteran of World War II and an Air Force veteran of the Korean War, who received two Purple Hearts, was born in Warren, R.I. A retired warehouse manager, he came here from Fall River, Mass. Mr. West was a member of the Elks Lodge, Fall River, the DeBary Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Masonic Lodge, West Warwick, R.I., and Southridge Golf Club, DeLand.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Sarah, and two sons, John and Kenneth, both of California. Memorial donations may be made to Florida Hospital Memorial HospiceCare, co Stewart Meyer Hospice House, 770 W. Granada Blvd., Ormond Beach, FL 32174. Deltona Memorial, Orange City, is in charge.

Ethel Wormstedt

SEPT. 7, 1912 -- MARCH 27, 2004

PORT ORANGE -- Ethel Loeb Wormstedt, 91, of Village Trail, a former accountant for several Wall Street firms in New York City, died Saturday at Hospice Care Center.

Born in New York City, Mrs. Wormstedt also worked as an accountant in California. She enjoyed travel and cooking.

Survivors include her husband of 30 years, Gus, and a brother, Leonard Gerstein, Sunrise. Tri-County Cremation, South Daytona, is in charge.

Semira Zuniga

MAY 14, 1918 -- MARCH 27, 2004

ORMOND BEACH -- Semira Victoria Zuniga, 85, of Cobblestone Trail, a retired owner of a hardware import business, died Saturday at Hospice Care Center, Port Orange.

Mrs. Zuniga was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, and came here in 2003 from Canton, Ohio. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Daytona Beach.

Survivors include two sons, Manuel, Daytona Beach, and Vicente, Canton; two daughters, Isabel Greiner, Ormond Beach, and Maria Elias, Houston; a sister, Dora Valdibieso, Guayaquil; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Tri-County Cremation, South Daytona, is in charge.

George Brownhill

AUG. 23, 1911 -- MARCH 25, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- George H. Brownhill, 92, of Royal Birkdale Way, a retired engineer for Dow Chemical, died Thursday at Halifax Medical Center.

Mr. Brownhill was born in Pittsburgh and came here in 1990 from Key Biscayne. He was a 50-year member of Centennial Lodge, F&AM, and the Scottish Rite both in Carnegie, Pa., and the Syria Shrine Temple, Cheswick, Pa.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Ruth; two daughters, Nancy Govoni, Daytona Beach, and Alma Stachurski, Winter Springs. Memorial donations may be made to Volusia County Literacy Council, 1575 Aviation Center Pkwy., Suite 418, Daytona Beach, FL 32114; or Journey's End Animal Sanctuary, P.O. Bertha Cooper

APRIL 22, 1948 -- MARCH 27, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- Bertha L. Cooper, 55, of Jefferson Street, a former food service supervisor, died Saturday at home.

Mrs. Cooper was a native and lifelong resident of Daytona Beach. She was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and graduated from Campbell Senior High School and Daytona Beach Community College.

Survivors include a daughter, Adriana Humphrey, Daytona Beach, and two brothers, Leroy Cooper Jr. and George Cooper, all of Daytona Beach. Gainous is in charge.
