LEAH TOLBERT GEIGER
Leah Tolbert Geiger died in her home in the presence of her family on Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999. Leah was born July 8, 1911, in Villa Rica, Ga., the youngest of seven children of Thomas Wilburn and Julia Stone Tolbert. She attended Chicora College in South Carolina and business school in Atlanta. In 1932, Leah married William Marlin Geiger, a professional photographer from Boaz, Ala. She worked with her husband in his studio in Gadsden, Ala. and then in Atlanta, Ga. They moved to Panama City, Fla. in 1947 where they sold real estate until his death in 1956. Following his death, Leah worked as the Director of Christian Education at Wallace Memorial Presbyterian Church in Panama City. Having served in many capacities, she was named an honorary life member of the Presbyterian Women of the Church. Beginning in 1958, she served for a number of years as matron of Central School, a boarding school for American missionary children in Lubondai, Congo. As she cared for the daily needs of the children there, she came to be affectionately known as "Mama G". The Congolese working with her called her "Mujadiki", meaning the one who makes things right. During the uprising that led to Congo's independence from Belgium, she came home to the United States, serving as the Secretary of Christian Education for the Atlanta Presbytery. She resumed her work in Congo in 1962, returning home again in 1964 to Panama City where she continued her work as a real estate broker. In 1978, she moved to North Georgia to be near her family and the mountains she loved. Living in Dahlonega in the 1980s, she continued her church work serving on the Presbyterial Board and starting a weekly prayer group which continues to this day. In 1991, she moved to Branon Lodge in Blairsville. This past March, she moved to Morningside of Gainesville to be closer to her family. Throughout her life, Leah traveled widely, visiting countries. Her endless zest for life and love of people is evidenced by the many and diverse friends she leaves here. She is survived by her son Dr. Leonard Geiger and his wife, Rebecca, of Gainesville together with her grandchildren: Marlin Geiger of Demorest, Len Geiger of Gainesville, Beth Geiger and her husband Arlen Bolstad of Richmond, Va., and Ralph Geiger of New Haven, Conn.
