Charles Douglas Crooms, 54, of Panama City died Friday, Oct. 3, 2003, at his residence.

He was born in Kynesville and lived most of his life in Jackson County. He was a heavy equipment operator for more than 15 years.

He is survived by one son, Charles D. Crooms Jr. of Dallas, Texas; a step-mother, Mallie Crooms of Alford; one brother, William Crooms of Fountain; and two sisters, Mary Martin and Sarah Williams, both of Dothan, Ala.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. CDT Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Salem Free Will Baptist Cemetery with the Rev. Donnie Hussey officiating with James and Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7 p.m. today, Tuesday, Oct. 7, at James and Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel.

John D. Redmon, 67, of Marianna died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, in Marianna. Arrangements will be announced by James and Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel.

Kathryn Odom Wheelus, 86, of Ashford, Ala., died Friday, Oct. 10 in Marianna. A native of Ashford, she taught elementary school in Ashford and Cottonwood, Ala., and in Cottondale, Campbellton, Marianna, Cypress and Sopchoppy, where she later retired. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ashford. She is survived by a son, Charles Ronald Wheelus, and wife Ann, of Marianna; two grandsons, Charles Ronald Wheelus II of Lake Worth and Jeffery Jarrod Wheelus of Marianna; one great-grandson, Blake Cody Wheelus; three nieces, Gale Eubanks of Ashford, Emily Sanders of Pansey, Ala., and Molly Bootle Sanders of Beaufort, S.C. A graveside funeral service will be held Monday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m. at Beulah Baptist Cemetery, Dothan, Ala., with the Rev. Jack Howell officiating and James and Sikes Funeral Home, Maddox Chapel, directing. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of the Emerald Coast, 4374 Lafayette St., Marianna, Fla. 32446.

Mrs. Ina R. Burroughs, 92, of Malone, Fla., died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Burroughs was born in Houston County, Ala., on Oct. 3, 1911. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Malone. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Burroughs, and daughter, Helen Anderson. She is survived by a son, Herman Burroughs of Malone; a daughter, Louise Peterson of Quincy; son-in-law, Henry Anderson of Malone; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held Sunday, Oct. 12, at 2 p.m., at the First Baptist Church of Malone, with the Rev. John Boss officiating. Burial will follow in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Home, Maddox Chapel, directing. The family received friends Saturday, Oct. 11, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Maddox Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, Fla. 32308-5428.

Hollis W. Smith, 30, of Marianna, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003, in Marianna. He is survived by a daughter, Mercedes Smith; two sons, James Michael Smith and Austin Smith; his mother, Mildred Smith of Rogersville, Ala.; one brother, Dale Smith of Rogersville; and three half-sisters and four half-brothers. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, at Elkins East Chapel in Center Star, Ala., with burial to follow in Bluewater Cemetery. James and Sikes Funeral Home, Maddox Chapel, is in charge of arrangements. The family received friends Friday at Maddox Chapel.

Mrs. Edna Earl Williams, 77, of Marianna, Fla., the Forks of the Creek Community, died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at the Courtyard at the Millpond. Mrs. Williams was a life-long resident of Jackson County. She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, a homemaker and a loving mother. Mrs. Williams is survived by two daughters, Nancy Carraway of Malone and Karen Stripling of Marianna; and one sister, Jewel Driver of Albany, Ga.; four grandchildren, Charlene Carraway of Cottondale, Dana Stripling of Gainesville, Seth Stripling of Marianna and Zachary Stripling of Marianna. The funeral service will be held Monday, Oct. 13, at 10 a.m. at Lord Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. John Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the family plot at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in the Forks of the Creek Community. The family will receive friends Sunday, Oct. 12, at Lord Funeral Home, 3449 Caverns Road, from 6 to 8 p.m. Lord Funeral Home of Marianna is in charge of the arrangements.

Mary McGee, 80, of Cottondale died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, in Jackson Hospital. Arrangements will be announced by James and Sikes Funeral Home, Maddox Chapel.

She was a native of Pennsylvania and had lived in Jackson County for the past two years. She retired as a computer programmer and was of the Catholic faith.

She is survived by: three daughters, Bobbie Gazdy and her husband, Bob of Cottondale, Joan Saxton and her husband, Harold of Bristol, Pa., and Dee Sobolaski and her husband, Chet of Croydon, Pa.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorialization will be by cremation. James and Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Sam Baker Sr., 86, of the St. Rose community in Grand Ridge died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, in the Bay Medical Center Panama City.

He is survived by: his wife, Corena Nealy Baker of Blountstown; two sons, Sam Baker Jr. (Martha), and Terry Baker (SerSandra), both of Blountstown; a sister, Clary Childs of Blountstown; a brother, Frank Baker (Daisy) of Grand Ridge; and five grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 2 p.m. at the St. Rose African Methodist Episcopal Church with the Revs. E. Smith and S. Barnes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body will lie at the church one hour prior to the funeral.

Vann Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Myrtle Ruby Barfield, 82, of Marianna died Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, following an extended illness.

She was a native and lifetime resident of Jackson County. She was of the Baptist faith, and homemaker and a loving mother.

She was preceded in death by three sons, John Henry Morris, Roy "Jabo" Morris, and James Morris.

She is survived by: one son, Arthur Granberry and his wife, Kim of Jacksonville; two daughters, Ruby Kent and her husband, Alton of Cottondale, and Rachel Porterfield and her husband, Sterling of Brooksville; three brothers, Rufus Mayo of Alford, John L. Mayo of Round Lake, and Henry Mayo of Alford; one sister, Maxine Adkins and her husband, Robert of the Cherokee community in Jackson County; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The funeral will be held Thursday, Oct. 16, at 10 a.m. at Lord Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Round Lake Cemetery with the Revs. Mae Harrison and Betty Stewart officiating.

The family will receive friends today, Wednesday, Oct. 15, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Lord Funeral Home, 3449 Caverns Road in Marianna.

Quessie Perry McCallister, 94, of Sneads died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, in the Marianna Convalescent Center.

She was a native of Sneads and a member of the Sneads Community Church of Christ.

She is survived by: nine daughters, Ruth Anthony of Hoboken, N.J., Lula Jones of Sneads, Essie Gainer (Thready) of Chattahoochee, Mable Pittman (Fred) of Indianapolis, Ind., Inez Walker (Leonard) of St. Petersburg, Louise Warren (Charles) of Jacksonville, Eva Wells of Indianapolis, Ind., Clara Lewis (James) of Sneads, and Doris Johnson of Sneads; four sons, Freddie Jones (Marie) of Chattahoochee, Charles McCallister of Indianapolis, Ind., Leroy McCallister (Paula) of Indianapolis, Ind., and Emmett McCallister (Geraldine) of St. Petersburg; 34 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Saturday, Oct. 18, at noon at the Sneads Community Church of Christ with Bishop Willis Raines officiating. Burial will be at Little Zion Cemetery.

The body will lie at the church one hour prior to the funeral.

Patsy Lee Neel, 56, of Sneads died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, in Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan, Ala.

She was a lifelong resident of Jackson County and a nursing assistant at Marianna Convalescent Center. She was of the Baptist faith and was a loving wife and mother.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Cathy Tyus.

She is survived by: her parents, William M. and Jessie Lee Tyus of Grand Ridge; her husband, Bernard L. Neel of Sneads; three daughters, Tammy Neel, Jerris Reed and her husband, Tony, and Ericika Neel, all of Sneads; two brothers, Steve Tyus and his wife, Connie of Sneads, and Ed Tyus and his wife, Sandra of Greenwood; two grandchildren, Taylor Reed and Caleb Reed, both of Sneads; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. CDT Friday, Oct. 17, at First Baptist Church in Sneads. Burial will be at Carpenter Cemetery in Grand Ridge.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. CDT today, Thursday, Oct. 16, at Lanier-Andler Funeral Home in Sneads.

Joseph Young Jr., 23, better known as Pork Chop, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, in Jackson Hospital.

He was a member of the Pope Chapel AME Church. He was a graduate of Marianna High School Class of 1998, Chipola Junior College, and was a student at the Florida A&M University majoring in respiratory therapy.

He is survived by his mother, Shirley Baker Young of Marianna; a brother, Stephen A. Young of Marianna; sisters, Tawana McClain from Miami, and Michelle Hall of Newark, N.J.; grandmother, Lillie Mae Baker; grandfather, Lugene Baker of Marianna; and a friend, Rebecca Bugg of Tallahassee.

The funeral will be held Sunday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m. at the Pope Chapel AME Church with the Revs. S.E. McGlockton and A. Jackson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body will lie at the church one hour prior to the funeral.

Billy Wilson Bryant, 88, of Grand Ridge died early Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003 in Marianna.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Grand Ridge, a retired carpenter and of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Tennie D. Bryant.

He is survived by: four sons, Bobby Bryant of Tallahassee, Eugene Bryant of Love Joy, Ga., Gene Bryant of Ackworth, Ga., and Jeff Bryant of Greenwood; one daughter, Betty Shelton of Plant City; two brothers, Golden Bryant of Grand Ridge and Davis Bryant of Tallahassee; two sisters, Amber Beard of Tallahassee and Emma Rea Wilson of Hosford; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. CDT Saturday, Oct. 18, at Shady Grove Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. William Walker officiating. Burial will be in Shady Grove Cemetery with James and Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 p.m. CDT today, Friday, Oct. 17, at Maddox Chapel.

Winnie Nell Ranew, 60, of Ashford, Ala., died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at the Medical Center in Dothan. Arrangements will be announced by James and Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel.

Rev. John David Hale II, 51, of Lake Butler, Fla., formerly of Graceville, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, following an extended illness. Rev. Hale was born in Griffin, Ga., living in Punta Gorda, Fla., for many years before moving to Graceville to attend Baptist Bible Institute. He was a member of Pilgrims Rest Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest Clifford Hale Sr. and brother Marion Boseman. He is survived by his mother, Edna Hale of Punta Gorda, Fla.; two sons, John David "Davy" Hale III of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Timothy Michael "Tim" Hale, and his wife, Jill, of Waxhaw, N.C.; two daughters, Kimberly Ann Hale of Marianna, Fla., and Christy Lee Finucane, and her husband, Richard, of New Orleans, La.; two brothers, Ernest Clifford Hale Jr. and James Paul Hale, both of Punta Gorda, Fla.; two sisters, June Davis of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Claudia Bloodworth of Fort Myers, Fla.; and a granddaughter, Olivia Finucane. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today, Sunday, Oct. 19, at Pilgrims Rest Baptist Church with Rev. Timothy Michael Hale and Rev. John David Hale III officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with James and Lipford Funeral Home of Graceville directing. The family will receive friends at the church today from 1 p.m. until time for the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Gideons International Chipley Camp, P.O. Box 308, Chipley, Fla. 32428.

Carl Buford Charles, 81, of Sneads, died Oct. 17, 2003, at his home. He was a native of Sumatra, Fla., and had lived in Sneads since 1979. He was of the Protestant faith. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict and retired from the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force. He is survived by five nephews and four nieces. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. CDT today, Sunday, Oct. 19, at Lanier-Andler Funeral Home Chapel in Sneads with burial in Pope Cemetery in Sneads.

Edith Long, 84, of 4309 Allen Street of Greenwood died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, in the Marianna Convalescent Center.

She was a native and life long resident of Jackson County and a member of the New Hoskie Missionary Baptist Church.

She is survived by: one brother, Charlie Long and his wife, Nina of Greenwood; one sister, Lina McGriff of Lauderhill; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held Saturday, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m. at the New Hoskie Missionary Baptist Church with the Revs. Lucious Williams, Willis Long, and Minister Bernard Felton officiating. Burial will be in the Orange Hill Cemetery in Marianna with Peoples Funeral Home of Marianna directing.

The body will lie at the church one hour prior to the funeral.
