Roy J. Newsome, 86, of Marianna died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, in Springhill.

He was a life long resident of this area. He and his wife were the owners of Independence Dry Cleaners and then he worked for the Cavalier Cleaners as manager until his retirement. He served our country with great pride during World War II where he was a member of the Rainbow Division and received the Purple Heart. He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church of Marianna. He was an avid member of the AARP of Marianna.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Fannie McCormick and Ollie Burch; and one brother, Isaac Newsome. He is survived by: his loving and devoted wife of 61 years, Mozell Newsome of Marianna; three daughters, Phyllis Mercer and her husband, John of Suwanee, Ga., Brenda Godwin and her husband, Harry of Marianna, and Sandra Ross and her husband, Don of Orlando; one sister, Stella Newsome Lee of Marianna; six grandchildren, Richard Mercer of Suwanee, Ga., Jeff Godwin of Marianna, Jana Godwin of Marianna, Jenda Trusty of Houston, Texas, Brad Ross of Orlando, and Danielle Ross of Orlando; six great-grandchildren; and many dear friends who will miss Mr. Roy greatly.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, in the First Assembly of God Church of Marianna with the Rev. Stephen Potter officiating. Burial will be in Sims Cemetery.

The family will receive friends tonight, Friday, Nov. 7, in the Marianna Chapel Funeral Home from 6 until 8 p.m.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the First Assembly of God of Marianna Building Fund or the charity of your choice.

Georgina B. Hamlin McGee, 44, of Marianna died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2003, at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.

She was a native of Meriden, Conn. She had lived in Jackson County since 1992 and was co-owner of Chipola River Town Houses in Marianna.

She is survived by: Gerald McGee of Marianna; two sons, Steven Brooks of Marianna and Justin Hamlin of Pensacola; two daughters, Courtney McGee and Autumn Whaley and her husband Derek, all of Marianna; her mother, Paula Bryant and her husband Danny of Marianna; one brother, George Vernon Thurston Jr. of Bainbridge, Ga.; four sisters, Verna Terry and her husband Clayton of Marianna, Stephanie Kirkland and her husband Richard of Fort Campbell, Ky., Catherine Thurston of Kansas, and Mary Jasmer and her husband Arthur of Apopka; and one granddaughter, Madison Whaley of Marianna.

The funeral was held Sunday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Stephen Potter officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery with James and Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

The family received friends Saturday at Maddox Chapel.

Mary Ellen Barber, 69, of Marianna died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, at the Medical Center in Dothan.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Marianna.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Hinton Barber.

She is survived by: Three daughters, Kathie Bailey and her husband James of Marianna, Maureen Godwin and her husband Wayne of Lakeland, and Donna Joan Hoke King and her husband Barry of Lorton, Va.; four sons, Charles Hoke and his wife Donna Marie of Lurey, Va., Daniel Hoke and his wife Eloise of Alexandria, Va., Brian Hoke and his wife Debbie of Dale City, Va., and Steven Hoke of Stafford, Va.; seven step-children; 29 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held at 1 p.m. CST, Monday, Nov. 10, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with Bishop Clay Rooks officiating. Burial was in Rock Bluff Assembly of God Cemetery near Bristol with James and Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel of Marianna directing.

The family received friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Willis Harrison McDonald, 70, of Marianna died Friday, Nov. 7, 2003, at University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham following a brief illness.

He was a native of Hartsfield, S.C. and had lived in Sunny Hills before moving to Marianna earlier this year. He retired from General Motors at the Chevrolet Plant in Flint, Mich. with more than 30 years of service. He was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church near Chipley.

He was preceded in death by his son John McDonald, and two daughters, Debra McDonald and Pamela McDonald Colson.

He is survived by: His wife, Alice W. McDonald; and his granddaughter, Christina Colson, both of Marianna.

The funeral will be held today, Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 3 p.m. at Maddox Chapel with the Rev. Gary Wiggins officiating. James and Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel will direct.

The family received friends from 7 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Harold L. "Hal" Williams, 81, passed away on Nov. 7, 2003 in Deland.

He was born in Bainbridge, Ga. and graduated from Malone High School in Malone in 1939. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the United State Navy from 1942 to 1945. In 1949, he graduated from the University of Miami in Miami. He retired from Pan Am Airlines in 1982 after 41 years of service. Much of his time with Pan Am was served abroad in locations including Uruguay, Guatemala, Panama, Trinidad, Saigon, Beirut, Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Amelia Williams; a daughter, Susan Williams of Fairfax, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Janet Williams of Tallahassee and grandsons Jackson Williams and Hudson Williams.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, Nov. 12, from 10 a.m. until noon at Waters and Hibbert Funeral Home in Pensacola.

Interment will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola.

Paris Carter, 80, of Calhoun and Gulf counties died Monday, Nov. 10, 2003, in the Gulf Coast Community Hospital in Panama City.

He was born in Fountain and had lived in Gulf and Calhoun counties for most of his life. He retired from the United States Army with 22 years of service, he was a veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict. He was an operating engineer, heavy equipment operator and was owner and operator of Carter's Restaurant for 12 years in Wewahitchka. He was a member of the Williams Memorial Methodist Church in Scotts Ferry.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Mary Elizabeth "Montford" Carter.

He is survived by: His present wife, Annie Lee "Johnson" Carter of Grand Ridge; three daughters, Helen Newsome of Wewahitchka, Mary Ann Williams of Blountstown, and Ouida Carter of Panama City; two sons, Roger Carter of Panama City and Larry Carter of Wewahitchka; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; stepchildren, Dewayne Johnson of Sneads, Linda Cain of Grand Ridge, and Janice Hamilton of Grand Ridge; eight step-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held Thursday, Nov. 13, at 10 a.m. CST from the Christian Home Freewill Baptist Church in Blountstown with the Revs. Bob Bellman and Paul Griffin officiating. Burial will be in the Nettle Ridge Cemetery in Blountstown.

The family will receive friends today, Wednesday, Nov. 12, from 6 until 8 p.m. CST at the Peavy Funeral Home.

All arrangements are under the direction of Marlon Peavy at Peavy Funeral Home in Blountstown.

Helen Baggett Powledge, 74, of Marianna died Monday, Nov. 10, 2003, at her residence following an extended illness.

She was a lifetime resident of Jackson County. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, homemaker, loving mother and grandmother.

She is preceded in death by: Her husband, A. Frank Powledge; and three brothers, Ralph Baggett, Roy Baggett and Robert Baggett.

She is survived by: Two sons, Darrell Franklin Powledge MD, MPH and his wife Stephanie of Roanoke, Va., and Dennis Hayes Powledge of Marianna; two grandchildren, Lauaren Powledge and Damien Powledge of Roanoke, Va.; and two sisters, Hazel Dozier of Marianna and Hilda Belcher of Ozark, Ala.; and a host of nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral will be held Saturday, Nov. 15, at 11 a.m. at Pinecrest Memory Gardens with the Rev. Michael Petty officiating.

Lord Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Annita Pearl Sewell Oliver died in Overland Park, Kan. on Nov. 12, 2003 after an illness.

She was born March 11, 1937 in Marianna. She was a graduate of Florida A&M University High School in Tallahassee and attended Fisk University in Nashville, Tenn. She was a resident of Macon, Ga. for 15 years where she was employed by the United States Postal Service. In 1970, she relocated to Overland Park, Kan. with her family to operate the Bonanza Steak House. She was later employed by the United States Postal Service in Overland Park. She formed many lasting relationships and was loved and respected by her friends and associates.

She was preceded in death by her father, the Rev. Dr. George A. Sewell of Atlanta, Ga., and her mother, Edythe Barnes Samuel of Jacksonville.

She is survived by: Her husband of 47 years, Marvin Oliver; sons, Darryl and his wife Lisa, and Terry and his wife Suki, both of Overland Park; daughter, Marvita of Cape Coast, Ghana, West Africa; six grandchildren, Jenna Schipull and her husband Robert of Bear, Del., Soni Oliver, Duncan Oliver, Lauren Oliver, and Hanna Oliver, all of Overland Park, and Isaiah Oliver of Cape Coast, Ghana, West Africa; her stepmother, Lillie Mae White Sewell of Atlanta, Ga.; and a host of cousins, uncles, aunts and other relatives.

Cremation will be followed by a memorial service and burial at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church in Marianna on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 11 a.m. A memorial reception will be held in the Kansas City area on Wednesday, Dec. 3.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or Harvesters Community Food Network.

Ann M. Ward, 67, of Marianna died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, in Houston, Texas.

She was born in Cottondale and was a retired school cafeteria worker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harley Ward, in 2002.

She is survived by: One son, Harley D. Ward and his wife Francis of Montgomery, Texas; one daughter, Carolyn Garrett and her husband Larry of Houston, Texas; three brothers, Joe Carnley, Cecil Carnley and Broward Carnley, all of Marianna; three sisters, Kathrine Ingram of Orlando, Marie Harrington of Altha and Gladys Woerner of Marianna; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The funeral will be held Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 10 a.m. CST at Maddox Chapel will the Rev. Rudolph Barwick officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery with James and Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. CST today, Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the funeral home.

Willard Hymond Melvin, 71, of St. Petersburg died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003, in St. Petersburg.

He was a native of Marianna, he served in the U.S. Army, was an independent insurance agent and was of the LDS faith.

He is survived by: Two sons, Dale Melvin of Tampa and William Daniel Melvin of St. Petersburg; one daughter, Deborah Jarsen and her husband William of St. Petersburg; one brother, Charlie Melvin of Illinois; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. CST today, Tuesday, Nov. 18, at Maddox Chapel with Bishop Clay Rooks officiating. Burial will be in the Kynesville Methodist Cemetery with James and Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

The family received friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Monday.

Mary Fentress Braxton Bassett, 84, of Cottondale died Friday, Nov. 14, 2003, at Lee Memorial Cleveland Campus Hospital in Ft. Myers.

She was born in Cottondale. She retired after 37 years of service as an X-ray technician serving 20 years at Washington County Hospital. She was a member of Cottondale United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Edwin Bassett, and a grandson, Philip Parker Andrews.

She is survived by: One daughter, Carolyn Andrews and her husband Mark of Ft. Myers; and one son, Jim Bassett of Cottondale.

The funeral will be held today, Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 2 p.m. CST at Maddox Chapel. Burial will be in Cottondale Methodist Cemetery with James and Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

The family received friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Casey Richard Davis Jr., infant son of Casey Davis and Carolyn Votta, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, at Jackson Hospital.

Arrangements will be announced by James and Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel in Marianna.
