Rossie Anderson Oliver, 92

Rossie Anderson Oliver, 92, passed away Monday, January 12, 2009, at Community Hospice in Vidalia. A native of Collins, she is the daughter of the late Walter and Ettie Cowart Anderson. She was a homemaker and a long time member of Collins Full Gospel Tabernacle where she was a pianist for over 40 years. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was “Aunt Rossie” to many nieces and nephews and honorary aunt to many others. No one visited her home without being invited to her kitchen for something to eat or drink. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Ottis Oliver; two brothers, Ottis and Bernice (Bunch) Anderson; and a great - granddaughter, Anna Mindt.
Survivors are a son and daughter - in - law, Carroll and Joyce Oliver of Cobbtown; daughter and son - in - law, Vera and Julian Rogers of Manassas; grandchildren, Julie (Ken) Mindt, David (Tara) Rogers, Ginger Oliver, Michael (Tasha) Rogers; great grandchildren, Caroline and Katie Rogers, Carmen and Grace Mindt, Bladen Rogers and Kevin Sweat.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, January 15 at 2:00 p.m., at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, with Rev. Greg Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Collins Baptist Church Cemetery.

Marsha Lynnette Tootle, 57

Marsha Lynnette Tootle, 57, passed away Friday night, January 9, 2009, at East Georgia Regional Medical Center. The Tattnall County native resided in Glennville for most of her life. She had retired from nursing after many years. She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by two sons, William Tootle of Glennville and Phillip Tootle of Tifton; one brother, David Donise Tootle of Reidsville; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Tuesday, January 13, 2009, with Reverend Michael Morgan officiating.
Pallbearers were Tony Bouwense, William A. Joyner, Donald Scott MacKinnon, Ben Wilder, Dustin Stanfield and Michael Dasher.
Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Nancy Ann Baker, 62

Nancy Ann Baker, 62, died Monday evening, December 29, 2008, at her home. The native of Blue Ridge had lived in the Metter area for the past 30 years. Nancy was a member of the Metter Freewill Baptist Church, and enjoyed horseback riding, fishing and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her husband, Carl Baker Jr. of Metter; three sons, Scott Baker of Fernandina FL, Carl Baker III of Metter, and Travis Baker of Ridgeland, NC; one brother, three sisters and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 31, 2008, in the Metter chapel. Burial followed in the Lake Cemetery.
Kennedy - Morgan - Brannen, Metter - Cobbtown, was in charge of the arrangements.

Madelene Wilson Blocker, 88

Madelene Wilson Blocker, 88, passed away Saturday, January 3, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville all of her life. She was a farmer, homemaker, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and lifelong member of Watermelon Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Dorsey Blocker and daughter, Gwinnett Blocker Durrence.
She is survived by her daughter, Velma Blocker Salter; son and daughter in law, Dannis (Pete) and Judy Blocker all of Glennville; sisters, Hazel Stubbs, Louise Craft and Betty Grice all of Claxton; five grandchildren, Glenn and Sandra Durrence, Danna and Jim Demos, Malissa and Paul O’Conner, Ellen and Joey Cowart and Russell and Kassie Blocker; 11 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 6, 2009, from the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home with Reverend Steve Miller and Reverend Vance Riggins officiating. Burial followed in Glennville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ricky Wilson, Randy Wilson, Andy Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Donald Stubbs and Richard Grice.
Remembrances may be made to Watermelon Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, 8882 Hwy 144, Glennville, GA 30427.

Claude Thomas Bragdon, 90

Claude Thomas Bragdon, 90, died Thursday, January 1, 2009, in Statesboro. The native of Candler County was a member of the Lake Primitive Baptist Church. He was blessed to have read through the Bible many times and was able to quote scripture from memory. Claude was a retired farmer, electrician, enjoyed fishing, spending time with his dogs and studying history, geography, and researching his genealogy. He was a predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Anna Marie Robbins Bragdon and a daughter, Claudette Miller.
He is survived by his son and daughter - in - law, Ronnie and Debra Bragdon of Harris Neck; two daughters and sons - in - law, Gail and John Cannady of Statesboro, and Sherry and Larry Joe McDaniel of Metter; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Funeral services were Sunday, January 4 in the chapel. Burial followed in the Lake Cemetery. In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to Ogeechee Area Hospice, 200 Donehoo St., Statesboro, GA 30458

Gerald E. Cowart, 73

Mr. Gerald E. Cowart, age 73, passed away Wednesday evening at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah. The Bryan County native had lived in Reidsville for 28 years. He was retired from Union Camp and was the owner and operator of the Babcock Store in Reidsville for 19 years. He was a charter member of the Coastal Empire Horseman Association and the Georgia Federation Saddle Club. He was a member of the Rocky Creek Saddle Club and a former member of the Reidsville Lions Club. He attended the Reidsville Pine Grove Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years Mrs. Mary Cowart of Reidsville; a daughter and son - in - law, Delores and Vernon Owens of Hagan; two sons and daughter - in - law, Shane Cowart of Ludowici and David and Teresa Cowart of Pembroke; an “adopted son, ” Brian A. Hill of Reidsville; two sisters and brothers - in - law, Kate and Donald Joubert of Milton, FL and Katherine and Bobby Wilson of Crestview, FL; a brother and sister - in - law, Frank and Ruth Cowart of Statesboro; five grandchildren, Brittney and Brandon Cowart of Lyons; Paul Cowart of Pooler, Brad Cowart of Pembroke, Casey McNeely of Hagan; two great - grandchildren, Mason McNeely and Logan Cowart; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Pallbearers were James Hughes, Charlie Goodrich, Enoch Cowart, Russell Rogers, Chris Hill and Lang Dunhan. Honorary pallbearers were Bobby Collins, Ronnie Rogers, James Scott and Tommy Goodrich.
Funeral Services were conducted Saturday, January 3, 2009, from the Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home with Rev. David Moxley officiating. Interment followed in the Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Jerry Dasher, 67

Jerry Dasher, 67, passed away Tuesday, December 30, 2008, at his residence. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville all of his life. He was a carpenter in the construction industry. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Claudine Barnhill; sister, Wanda McAllister and grandson, Blake Dasher.
He is survived by his children, Terry Dasher (Ann) of Glennville, Renee Barnham and Lee Durrence of Glennville and Lang Dasher of Manassas; sister, Charlene Moore (Larry) of Newington, GA; brother, Theron Dasher of Miami, FL; grandchildren, Brook Ford, Scott Dasher, James Dasher, Vicki Bruce and Ricky Dukes; great - grandchildren, Jagger Bruce, London Smith and Jayme Ford, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday, January 4, 2009, at the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home with Reverend Kenny Edwards officiating. Burial followed in Glennville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Hal Dasher, Mike McAllister, David Easterling, Scott Dasher, Delmas (Shot) Durrence, Ronnie Anderson and Eddie Moore.

Delwin W. Dowdy, 69

Delwin W. Dowdy, 69, died Sunday, January 4, 2009, at Memorial Health University Medical Center. The Tattnall County native was a 1957 graduate of Glennville High School. He was employed with Seaboard Railroad in Savannah and Jacksonville before returning to the family farm. He was engaged in farming until his retirement in 2005, due to failing health. He was also owner of two Dairy Queen franchises and a member of Reidsville Baptist Church. In 1994, Mr. Dowdy was awarded the Soil and Water Conservationist of the Year Award and was the Onion Grower of the Year in 1996.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wren and Vida Dowdy and a brother, Daniel.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Dowdy of Reidsville; children, Devory Dowdy of Savannah and Danalyn Dowdy of Atlanta; sister, Deanna Floyd of Vidalia; grandchildren, Brennan Sarver and husband, Ricky and Sims Dowdy; great grandchild, Chatham Sarver; step - great grandchild, Hannah Sarver and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 7, 2009, at Glennville First Baptist Church with Reverend Rick Brown and Reid Torrance officiating. Burial followed at Harmony United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Dane Dowdy, James Floyd, Dennis Dowdy, John Floyd, Sims Dowdy and Jason Floyd.
Remembrances may be made to Hospice Savannah, P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, GA 31416.

Elizabeth Ann Jones, 80

Elizabeth Ann Jones, 80, passed away Thursday, January 1, 2009, at the home of her son and daughter - in - law, under the care of Serenity Hospice. She was born September 11, 1928, in Collins, GA, and was a life - long resident of Gibsonton, FL. She had lived in Tattnall County with her son and daughter in law, Jimmy and Debbie Lane for the past 15 months. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Gibsonton, FL.
She is survived by her son and daughter - in - law, Jimmy and Debbie Lane of Reidsville; grandchildren, Alisha and Kayla Lane of Reidsville and Theresa Campbell of Brunswick; great grandchildren, Benjamin, Rebecca and Devon Campbell; great - great grandchild, Savanna and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 6, 2009, at Serenity Meadows Funeral Home in Riverview, Florida, with Reverend Malcolm Clements officiating. Burial followed in Orange Hill Cemetery.
