Tony Wayne Wilds, 54
Mr. Tony Wayne Wilds, age 54 of Reidsville, died Thursday, April 2, 2009, in the Doctors Hospital in Augusta after a brief illness. He was a native of Tattnall County, and lived in Toombs County most of his life. He was a 1973 graduate of Lyons Senior High School, was a correctional officer with the Georgia State Prison in Reidsville with thirty years of service, attended the Mt. Vernon Pentecostal Church, and was preceded in death by his parents, John Flannery Wilds and Gladys Futch Wilds.
Mr. Wilds is survived by his wife, Kitty Aaron Wilds of Reidsville; two sons, Dwayne Wilds, and Joey Wilds both of Lyons; one brother, Kenneth “Pee Wee” Wilds of Lyons; one sister, Pat Wallace of Brunswick; five grandchildren, Donovan, Larissa, Kyle, Jordan, and Justice Wilds all of Lyons, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday, April 5, 2009, at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend Ray Wood and Guy Aaron officiating. Interment followed in the Mt. Moriah Methodist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were the Honor Guard of the Georgia State Prison in Reidsville.

Evelyn Jeffries Abbott, 96
Mrs. Evelyn Jeffries Abbott, age 96, died Sunday, March 8, 2009, at her residence near Lyons. She was born in Phenix City, Alabama, to the late William Arthur and Harriett Parker Jefferies. She was a longtime resident of Phenix City, a 1932 graduate of Central High School in Phenix City, retired after 27 years as assistant to the clerk of the Russell County Commissioners and is a retired Alabama state employee. She was a charter member of the First Presbyterian Church of Phenix City, attended the English Eddy Presbyterian Church for 16 years in the English Eddy Community, Past President of the Phenix City Shrinettes, and was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Wilson K. Abbott, and three sisters, Lucille Duke, Clara Hibler, and Gertha Slaughter.
Mrs. Abbott is survived by one daughter and son - in - law, Jane and Joel Burch of Statesboro; one son and daughter - in - law, Kenneth and Linda Abbott of Lyons; four grandchildren, Laura Evelyn Burch of Phenix City; Jason S. Burch of Statesboro; Christy A. and Kemp Toomer of Reidsville; and Will K. Abbott of Reidsville; one great - granddaughter, Ansleigh Toomer; nieces and nephews, Ann Webber, Beverly Newsome, Mary Evelyn Rhodes, Roy Hutto, and George Slaughter, and special caregivers, Linda Denmark and Jackie Bryant.
Funeral services for Mrs. Evelyn Jeffries Abbott were held Thursday, March 12, 2009, at in Vance Memorial Chapel in Phenix City. Interment followed in Lakeview Memory Gardens in Phenix City.

Linda Bell, 56
Mrs. Linda Bell, 56, of Glennville, passed away at her residence in Long County. She was a native of Tattnall County and a member of Greater Zachariah Baptist Church where she served as a Deaconess. She was previously employed with the Tattnall County School System for 18 years.
She is survived by her husband, Gary Bell of Glennville, GA; one daughter and son - in - law, Francine and Stoney Hopkins of Reidsville, GA; two sons, Ron Bacon and Delwin Bell, both of Glennville, GA; six grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at Greater Zachariah Baptist Church in Glennville, GA, with burial in the church cemetery.

Russell Eugene Kangeter, 74
Russell Eugene Kangeter, 74, died Sunday March 29, 2009, after an extended illness. The native of Bryan County had lived most of his life in Candler County and was of the Baptist faith. Russell worked many years with Brannen Farms where he was a heavy equipment operator. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.
Survivors include a daughter and son - in - law, Felicia and Marty Todd of Claxton; a son and daughter - in - law, Rusty and Jan Kangeter of Pulaski; sister and brother - in - law Nancy and Earl Cook of Pulaski; brothers and sister - in - laws, Melvin Jr. and Wilma Kangeter of Avon Park FL, and James and Virginia Kangeter of Metter, and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2:00 Thursday, April 2, at Metter Freewill Baptist Church with burial following in the Lower Lotts Creek Cemetery.

Linda Joyce NeeSmith McCranie, 67
Mrs. Linda Joyce NeeSmith McCranie, age 67, of the New Branch Community, Lyons, died Tuesday, March 24, 2009, in the Community Hospice House in Vidalia after an extended illness. She was a native and lifelong resident of Toombs County, a homemaker, a member of the New Branch Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, the last charter member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, Post # 3563, and member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She served on the Board of Directors of the Toombs County Chapter of the American Red Cross and also served as Blood Service Chairman for Toombs County for many years.
Mrs. McCranie is survived by her husband of 29 years, Earl McCranie, of the New Branch Community; one son and daughter - in - law, Buddy and Terri Collins of Vidalia; one daughter and son - in - law, Sophia Collins and Wayne Smith of Lyons; one brother, Russell NeeSmith of Richmond Hill; one sister, Sue Andrews of Salt Lake City, Utah; four grandchildren, Duane Smith and Becky of Reidsville; Christopher Smith of Albany; and Ashley and Dillon Collins of Vidalia; five great - grandchildren, Drew, Ammiee, Hunter, and Emma Smith all of Reidsville; and Deidra Collins of Vidalia, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 27, 2009, in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend Michael Kennedy and Reverend Ron Womack officiating. Interment followed in the Hardens Chapel Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Dillon Collins, Lamar Fountain, Robert Roberson, Benny McLendon, Randy Usher, and Chris Williams. Honorary pallbearers were members of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, including, Shirley Curl, Pam Griggers, Sue Redfern, Florene Griggers, Sarah Jeffers, and Wanda Coursey.

Nancy Johns Brooks, 87
Nancy Johns Brooks, 87, of Metter died Sunday night at Candler County Hospital. She moved to Metter from Mobile, AL, eight years ago, and attended Metter Church of God. Mrs. Brooks owned and operated several assisted living homes in the Mobile area, and was the Metter Nursing Home Beauty Queen for 2006. She was preceded in death by her parents, Virgil and Elminey Jones Johns, and a daughter Betty Stacy.
Surviving are two daughters and a son - in - law: Etoye and Earl Rigdon of Metter, and Debbie Patronas of Mobile, AL; grandchildren: Charlie Stacy, Dana Stacy (Michael) Fadalla, Carla Pattillo, Amanda Nobles, Jason (Leslie) Rigdon, Stormy Patronas, Philip Patronas and six great grandchildren
Graveside funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at Rosemary Church Cemetery.

Johnnie Strickland Burkhalter, 79, passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Hospital. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville all of her life. She was a homemaker, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a member of Glennville First Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by her parents, Lan and Freida Strickland; husband, Herbert J. Burkhalter; daughter, Cindy B. Block; brother, Bill Strickland and sister, Naomi Waters.
She is survived by her daughters and sons - in - law, Jeannette B. and Eddie Taylor of Macon, Paulette Groover, Debbie and Robert Dasher, Rhonda and Royce Kennedy and Charles Block, all of Glennville; sons and daughters in law, Herbert “Bubba” and Holly Burkhalter of Glennville, Charles and Wynette Burkhalter of Claxton, Terry and Earlene Burkhalter, Randy and Lisa Burkhalter, Ricky Burkhalter, all of Glennville; sisters and brother - in - law, Wylene Johnson, Judy and Beach Stanfield, both of Glennville, Brenda Strickland, of Augusta; sister - in - law, Gayle Strickland of Merritt Island, FL; 19 grandchildren, 13 great - grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 1, 2009, at Glennville First Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Glennville City Cemetery.

Virginia Strickland Dubberly, 76
Virginia Strickland Dubberly, 76, died Monday, May 4, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah. She was born in Evans County on September 29, l932 to Marcus A. and Ida Mae Ray Strickland and lived in this area all of her life. She was employed by the Tattnall County Board of Education in the Food Service Department. She was a 34 year cancer survivor and a member of Birdford Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Elna Cannon, brothers, Windell Strickland, William A. Strickland and Donald Strickland.
Survivors include her husband, Reginald (Topsy) Dubberly of Glennville; daughters and sons - in - law, Rita Dubberly of Ludowici; Regina and Garland Wilson of Savannah; Vickie and Barry Von Bergen of Savannah; sons and daughters - in - law, Tim and Debra Dubberly of Glennville, Greg and Audrey Dubberly of Glennville; Terry and Patti Dubberly of Daisy; sisters, Doris Foster of Glennville, Viola S. Cannon of Vidalia; brother, Hugh Strickland of Manassas; 11 grandchildren, 10 great - grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 7, 2009, from the chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home with Rev. Daniel Harris officiating. Burial will follow in Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Marjorie H. Durham, 88
Marjorie H. Durham, 88, passed away Sunday, May 3, 2009, at Spanish Oak Hospice. The Long County native had lived in this area all of her life. She was a World War II Navy Veteran, serving as a 2nd Lt. in Washington DC. She was a graduate of Vanderbilt University, a member of Alpha Omega Phi, a member of The Nature Conservancy and an avid outdoors woman. She is member of Glennville First Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Lee and Nannie Lou Bryant Howard, and her husband, Hugh Durham.
She is survived by children, Lee, Lucinda, Bryant and Lawrence. Five Grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at the Chapel of Brannen Kennedy Funeral Home. Interment followed in the Glennville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Gene Wilds, Dickey Dixon, Terry Quick, Terrell Futch, Gerald Strickland, and Clyde Davis.

Mrs. Mae Hilton Ford, 77, passed away Friday, May 1, 2009, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Center in Statesboro, GA, after an extended illness. She was a member of Holy Temple Pentecostal Church in Glennville, GA, where she served as the Mother of the Church.
She leaves to cherish her memories: six sons - Bishop Wallace (Gertie) Grant, Lefane (Bridgett) Reynolds, Bishop Kenny (Cynthia) Reynolds, Curtis Ford and Sam Ford all of Glennville, GA, and Michael Brown of Statesboro, GA; ten daughters - Mrs. Lavern (Raymond) Williams, Mrs. Brenda (Rudolph) Reynolds both of South Bay, Florida, Sandra Reynolds of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Mrs. Eva Mae (Grady) Johnson, Mrs. Elease (William) Bacon, Lillie Ann Ford, Regina Ford, Mrs. Priscilla (Jeffery) Sanders, and Linda Gail Ford all of Glennville, GA, and Marie Wright of New York; 35 grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren. Two brothers, Stanley and Hilton Grant, Jr. both of Glennville, GA, . and three sisters, Mrs. Catherine Johnson of Walthourville, GA, Mrs. Ruby (Pete) Johnson and Dorothy Grant both of Glennville, GA, also survive.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 9, 2009, at 11:00 am at the White Pine Holiness Church in Glennville, GA, with burial in the Robert Chapel cemetery in Tyson, GA.
