Susie Walker Smith, 90

Ms. Susie Walker Smith, age 90, passed away Thursday, July 9, 2009, at the Glenvue Nursing Home in Glennville under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. The Jenkins County native had lived in Reidsville, prior to moving to Jacksonville in 1965. She returned to Reidsville in 2000. She was retired from JC Penny and was a member of the Reidsville Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Judge H.O. Walker and J.M. Smith; siblings, Woodrow McNear, Wofford McNear, Lois Clifton, Mattie Wilkes, and Laura Ozean Lanier
She is survived by: her sons and daughters - in - law, Gary and Betty Walker of Savannah, and Larry and Gail Walker of Alpharetta; a brother, Harrison McNear of Savannah; special niece, Sue Miller of Reidsville; special friend, Carl Cowart of Reidsville; six grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services were conducted Saturday, July 11, 2009, from the Reidsville Baptist Church with the Reverends Steve Miller and Sterling Bargeron officiating. Interment followed in the Reidsville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Kent Walker, Mark Walker, Eric Walker, Jeremy Walker, Bill Walker, and Bobby Rowland
Memorials may be given to: Ogeechee Area Hospice, PO Box 531 Statesboro, GA 30459 or the Reidsville Baptist Church Building Fund, PO Box 181 Reidsville, GA 30453.
Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Rosetta Stanfield, 64

Rosetta Stanfield, age 64, passed away Monday, July 13, 2009, at her residence under the care of Community Hospice. The Bradenton, FL, native had lived in Collins for 22 years. She was a seamstress, retiring from Well Craft Boat Company. She will be remembered by her generosity and her love for others.
She is survived by her daughters, Barbara Bennett of Dublin and Joyce A. Highlander of Ohio; a son, Joe Hurst of Adrian; two step - sons, Artie Monroe of Collins and Joshua Monroe of Pooler; sisters, Linda Sue McMurtry and Sally Rico, both of Collins; brothers, William P. Stanfield of Collins and Eddie Dean Stanfield of Ludowici; seven grandchildren, one great granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be conducted Sunday, July 19, 2009, from the residence of Ms. Stanfield, 329 William F. Stanfield Road, Collins, GA.

Barbara Ann Frazier Wooley, 52

Mrs. Barbara Ann Frazier Wooley, 52, of Glennville, GA, passed away on Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at the Seton Health Center of Troy, New York. She was a native of Tattnall County and a member of Mt. Zion #1 Missionary Baptist Church in Glennville, GA.
She is survived by one daughter, Christian Wooley of Troy, New York; five brothers; four sisters; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at Mt. Zion #1 Missionary Baptist Church in Glennville, GA, with burial following in the Robert Chapel cemetery in Tyson, GA.
King and Son’s Funeral Home of Glennville was in charge of arrangements.

Vaslea Manning, 58

Vaslea Manning, 58, was born on September 15, 1950, in Tattnall County, Georgia to the parentage of Eddie Byrd and Lelia Boyd. She departed this life on Sunday, June 21, 2009, at the Doctors Hospital of Tattnall in Reidsville. She was a member of St. Phillips Missionary Baptist Church in Reidsville.
She is survived by her husband, James Manning of Reidsville; children, Brenda (Cornelius) Brown of Eastman, Charles (Angelica) Smith of Macon, Willie (Katie) Smith of Reidsville, Samantha (Anthony) Brown of Eastman, Sabrina (Floyd) Flakes of Reidsville, and Wesley (Shemeka) Manning of Claxton; siblings, Joyce (Willie H.) Jones of Reidsville, Rosa Mae (Melvin) Browder of Reidsville, Gloria (Lucas) Glenn of Atlanta, Charles (Janice) Smith of Atlanta, Bobby Futch of Reidsville and Ricky Boyd (Etta) of Vidalia; eleven grandchildren, two great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other loving relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 26, 2009, at St. Phillips Missionary Baptist Church in Reidsville, with Reverend Artis Carswell officiating and Bishop Vincent R. Drummer, Eulogist.
Pallbearers were Cornelius Brown, Robert Smith, Paul Brewton, Cledis Brewton, Fernann Clay and Derron Rogers.
Vincent R. Drummer Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Bettye Jane Haney Sikes, 82

Bettye Jane Haney Sikes, 82, died Sunday, July 5, 2009, at her home. The Candler County native lived most of her life in Tattnall County. She was a bookkeeper at Candler County Hospital for many years. Betty was a homemaker and loved taking care of children and grandchildren. She was a member of the Cobbtown Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years; Howard Sikes of Cobbtown; a daughter, Brenda Wright of Cobbtown; a brother and sister - in - law, Charles Howard “Sonny” and Thadyne Haney of Stone Mountain; three granddaughters,
Melonie, Michelle and Monica Wright; eight great grandchildren; many brothers - in - law, sisters - in - law, nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services were conducted Wednesday, July 8, at the Lake cemetery in Metter, with the Reverend Walter Leveritt officiating. Pallbearers were Twig Hany, Mark Haney, Dale Sikes, Rob Sikes, Dustin Foskey, Trevor Ellis, Jerry Sikes and Jimmy Sikes. Remembrances may be sent to the Cobbtown Baptist Church, POB 176, Cobbtown, GA 30420.
Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, was in charge of the arrangements.

Jessie Elizabeth Smith, 69

Jessie Elizabeth Smith, age 69, of Collins passed away Monday, July 06, 2009, at her residence after a long fight with cancer. She was a 1958 graduate of Paxon High School of Jacksonville, Fl, where she was an outstanding golfer. Miss Smith was a U.S. Army veteran where she was a computer operator. While on duty in France she won the United States European Military Women Golf Championship. After leaving the Army she was a computer operator for Ryder/Pie in Jacksonville. She was a retired Georgia Department of Corrections Officer. While serving as a correctional officer she was selected to serve as security guard for the 1996 Centennial Olympics in Atlanta, GA. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wharton P. Smith and Jessie E. Smith of Collins and a brother, Phillip H. Smith of Middleburg, FL.
She is survived by her best friend, Ruth Dunn of Collins; sister, Harriett E. Carter and her husband Jimmy of Lynntown, GA; two bothers, Wharton Paul Smith Jr. and wife, Jo Ann, of Conehatta, MS, and Richard Franklin Smith and wife Judith of Middleburg, FL, aunt, Ethel Padgett of Jacksonville and a number of nieces and nephews.
Honoring her request, Miss Smith was cremated and will be buried in Jacksonville Memory Gardens in Jacksonville, FL.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice, PO Box 2277, Vidalia, GA 30474

Carol Lawler Bridges, 61

Mrs. Carol Lawler Bridges, age 61, of Vidalia, died Monday, June 22, 2009, in the Select Specialty Hospital in Savannah after an extended illness. She was a native of Toombs County and had lived in the area most of her life. She retired from Plant Hatch as an administrative assistant with nearly 20 years of service, and was a volunteer with hospice. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lyons, and was preceded in death by her parents, Hubert and Grace Ward Lawler, and a brother, Gerald Lawler.
Mrs. Bridges is survived by her husband, J. R. Bridges of Vidalia; two sons, Matt Williams of Hawaii, and Travis A. Williams of Collins; two step - sons, James Bridges of Winder, and Eddie Bridges of Baxley; two brothers, Bobby Lawler, and Lewis Lawler of Vidalia; eight grandchildren, Alexander, Evan, and Madison Williams, Brandon, Adaire, Tyler, Alex, and Maura Bridges, and one great - grandson, Oliver James Bridges.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the H.E.L.P. Foundation (Humanitarian Efforts to Lessen Poverty of underprivileged children in the Philippines), 23031 60 Road, Lebanon, KS. 66952, or by visiting their web site at www.helpfoundation.com.
Honoring her request, Mrs. Bridges was cremated.

Mary Hall, 91

Mrs. Mary Hall, 91, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at Candler Hospital in Savannah, GA. She was a member of Bennett Tabernacle Holiness Church in Hazlehurst, GA.
She is survived by her husband, Mr. Marion Elijah Hall; one son, Willie Hall (Brenda) of Savannah; four daughters, Mrs. Carolyn (Henry) Richards and Shirley Roberts, both of Savannah, GA, Mrs. Josie (Jet) Cox and Mrs. Janice Anderson, both of Glennville; 20 grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at 1 p.m., at the Bennett Tabernacle Holiness Church in Hazlehurst, with burial in the Wilcox - Hall cemetery in Hazlehurst, GA.
King Brother’s Funeral Home of Hazlehurst was in charge of the arrangements.

“H.C.” Hampton Columbus Howard, 90

“H.C.” Hampton Columbus Howard, 90, died Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at his residence surrounded by his family. He was born in Liberty County and lived in Long County all of his life. He was retired from Seaboard Construction and a farmer. He was a member and deacon of Grace Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Bertha B. Howard; daughter, Mary Elizabeth Groover and sister, Penia Bradley.
He is survived by his sons and daughters - in - law, Jerry and Janette Howard, Baxter and Elizabeth Howard and Dennis and Donna Howard, all of Ludowici; sisters, Doris Smiley of Meldrim, Lois Purcell of Savannah and Joyce Purcell of Glennville; 13 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 26, 2009, at the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home with Reverend Thomas Kelly officiating. Burial followed in Pigot Branch Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jerrod Howard, Mike Howard, Anthony Howard, Wallace Shaw, Wes Brantley and Ron Sharpe.

Patrick Lucious Kennedy, 54

Patrick Lucious Kennedy, 54, died peacefully, Saturday, June 27, 2009, at Candler Hospital in Savannah surrounded by his family. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville all of his life. He was a 1972 graduate of Glennville High School where he loved playing football for the Bulldogs. He retired from the Department of Corrections in 2002 and was a member of Georgia Peace Officers Association. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, loved fishing, sports and working on his tractor. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Melton Kennedy and Evelyn Kennedy Dreggors; grandparents, Lucious and Nita Kennedy; three best friends, Bubba Kennedy, Dana Holland and Joe Beck.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine Todd Kennedy of Glennville; daughters and sons - in - law, Missi and Matt Elrod of Glennville and Candice and Tom Elrod of Statesboro; granddaughter, Madeline Kennedy Deal of Glennville; brother, David Dreggors of Lyons and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at 2 p.m., at the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home with Reverend Jerry Knight and Reverend Dr. Randy King officiating. Burial followed in Glennville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Donald Barrow, Shane Odom, Ronnie Anderson, David Dreggors, Matt Brown and John Cox.
Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home of Glennville was in charge of the arrangements.
