Willard L. “Will” Mahnke, 85
Willard L. “Will” Mahnke, 85, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Hospital. The Oklahoma native had lived in Glennville since 1983. He was a World War II Army Veteran, retired from civil service, a member of Glennville VFW Post #8379, American Legion Post #95 and a past Boy Scout Leader. He was a member of Glennville United Methodist Church.
He will be greatly missed by his wife, Betty Mahnke of Glennville; children, Marylee and Robert Tuttle of Dublin, Linda Sue and Robert Respoli of Florida, Robert Gene Mahnke of Florida, Tina Marie Burnett of Guyton, James Edward Mahnke of Savannah, Bruce and Wynelle Dunham Welsh of Jesup, T.J. and Patty Dunham Johnson of Long County and Henry Forte Dunham of Glennville; sisters, Geneva Helf of Neosho, MO, and Viola Williams of Oklahoma City, OK; sister - in - law, Lillie Mahnke of Guthrie, OK; 13 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 27, 2009, at Glennville United Methodist Church with Reverend Vance Riggins officiating. Burial was held Monday, June 29, 2009, at 11 a.m., in Hillcrest Abbey West cemetery in Savannah with Military Honors.
Pallbearers were David Smith, Daniel Smith, Michael Apostol, Chet Smith, Charles Reddish Jr. and Matt Blizzard. Honorary pallbearers were Members of the Wesley Fellowship Sunday School Class and members of the Cowart Memorial Sunday School Class.

Vaslea Manning, 58
Vaslea Manning, 58, was born on September 15, 1950, in Tattnall County, Georgia to the parentage of Eddie Byrd and Lelia Boyd. She departed this life on Sunday, June 21, 2009, at the Doctors Hospital of Tattnall in Reidsville. She was a member of St. Phillips Missionary Baptist Church in Reidsville.
She is survived by her husband, James Manning of Reidsville; children, Brenda (Cornelius) Brown of Eastman, Charles (Angelica) Smith of Macon, Willie (Katie) Smith of Reidsville, Samantha (Anthony) Brown of Eastman, Sabrina (Floyd) Flakes of Reidsville, and Wesley (Shemeka) Manning of Claxton; siblings, Joyce (Willie H.) Jones of Reidsville, Rosa Mae (Melvin) Browder of Reidsville, Gloria (Lucas) Glenn of Atlanta, Charles (Janice) Smith of Atlanta, Bobby Futch of Reidsville and Ricky Boyd (Etta) of Vidalia; eleven grandchildren, two great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other loving relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 26, 2009, at St. Phillips Missionary Baptist Church in Reidsville, with Reverend Artis Carswell officiating and Bishop Vincent R. Drummer, Eulogist.
Pallbearers were Cornelius Brown, Robert Smith, Paul Brewton, Cledis Brewton, Fernann Clay and Derron Rogers.

Rubye Sapp, 85
Mrs. Rubye Sapp, 85, of Reidsville, passed away Saturday, June 27, 2009, at her residence after an extended illness. She had lived in Jacksonville, FL, before moving to Reidsville ten years ago. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alvin Sydney and Bessie Gillispie Brock. She was a member of the First United Pentecostal Church of Glennville.
She is survived by one daughter, Susan Sapp of Reidsville and two sons, Rhodie Sapp and Gerry Sapp, both of Jacksonville, FL.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at 2:30 p.m., from the First United Pentecostal Church of Glennville. Interment followed in the Reidsville City Cemetery.

Warnell Barrow, 87
Warnell Barrow, 87, died Sunday, August 9, 2009, at Community Hospice in Vidalia. The Evans County native lived most of his life in Tattnall County and was the son of the late Fred and Kizzie Anderson Barrow. He was an Army veteran serving in World War II and received an Asiatic - Pacific Campaign Ribbon. Mr. Barrow retired from the Department of Transportation in road maintenance. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and attended the Claxton Primitive Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Evelyn Conner Barrow; sister, Eudell Stewart, and a son - in - law, Eugene Bryson.
He is survived by four daughters and sons - in - law; Sherry Bryson of Lyons, Vera and Glenn DeLoach of Mendes, Linda and Robert Colson of Vidalia, Melba and Jimmie Powell of Vidalia; two sisters, Wilma B. Jarrell of Blitchton and Doris B. Mullaney of Cheshire, CT; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 12, 2009, at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, with Rev. Josh Hughes officiating. Burial followed in the Anderson Church Cemetery. Military honors were observed. Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Duane “Pop” Carmichael, 75
Mr. Duane “Pop” Carmichael, age 75, passed away Sunday, August 9, 2009, at his residence under the care of his family and Community Hospice. The Dakota native had lived in Savannah many years, prior to moving to Reidsville in 1984. He was retired from the US Army, after serving 25 years, and also retired from the Georgia State Prison as a correctional officer. He had also worked as a security officer at the Claxton Poultry. He is a member of the Lake View Praise and Worship Center in Reidsville and loved spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Carmichael of Reidsville; three daughters and sons - in - law, Stacie Carmichael of Montana, Joanne and Thomas Griffin of Pennsylvania, Linda and Steven Jamski of Delaware; two sons and a daughter - in - law, Charles Carmichael of Montana and Joseph and Carrie Wolf of Reidsville; 11 grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin at 6:00 p. m Thursday, August 13, 2009, from the funeral home
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a. m. Friday at the Lake View Praise and Worship Center in Reidsville with the Rev. E.V. Jenkins officiating. Interment will follow in the Georgia Veterans Memorial cemetery in Glennville with full military honors.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Bowen, Jerry Davis, Andrew Jenkins, John Paul Haggard, Tommy Rollings and William Alldredge.

Edward Martin Durrence, 86
Edward Martin Durrence, 86, died Monday, August 3, 2009, at Savannah Square Assisted Living. Born July 3, 1923, in rural Glennville, GA, to Earnest Allen and Ora Elizabeth Durrence, he worked tirelessly as a youth on the family farm. He graduated from Glennville High School, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and the University of Georgia with a Bachelors and Masters of Science in Agriculture. He was a World War II, Navy Veteran serving aboard the USS Pittsburgh in the Pacific Fleet. While on the Pittsburgh, he received two battle stars for valor and attained the rank of Ensign in 1946. He worked for Cryovac as a salesman, engineer and manager for 32 years until his retirement in 1985. His long career in food science allowed him to live in Glennville, Athens, Atlanta, Tampa, FL, Greenville, and Moore S.C., where he ultimately retired by returning to life on a small farm. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He married
Anita Smith of Glennville on October 19, 1946 and was a member of Grace Methodist Church in Atlanta.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Anita Smith Durrence of Savannah; daughter and son in law, Anita and Bruce Smithers of Savannah; brothers, Merrill Durrence of Atlanta, GA, William (Bill) Durrence of Columbus, OH, Jessie H. (Mutt) Durrence of Glennville; granddaughter, Jessica Miller of Charleston, SC; grandson, James Miller (Cassandra) of Kennesaw; sister - in - law, Doris Durrence and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, August 7, 2009, at Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home, with Reverend Vance Riggins officiating. Burial followed in Beards Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery with Military Honors.

Penny Merle Baxter Geiger, 87
Penny Merle Baxter Geiger, 87, passed away Friday, August 7, 2009, at Glenvue Nursing Home under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. The Tattnall County native had lived in this area all of her life. She retired from the textile industry after more than 30 years of service. She was a homemaker, taught Sunday School and was a member of Ebenezer Free Will Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, “H” Hampton Geiger; daughter, Anda Odom and granddaughter, Anne Geiger.
She is survived by her son and daughter - in - law, Louis and Glenda Geiger of Glennville; son - in - law, Barry Odom of Glennville; brother, Avis Baxter of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren, Shawn and Vicky Odom, Kimberly and Brian Blocker, Shane and Stephanie Odom; six great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday, August 9, 2008, at Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home, with Reverend Wendell Miller officiating. Burial followed in Glennville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Matthew Blocker, Mark Blocker, Ben Odom, Brad Odom, Stephen Odom and Avery Kicklighter.

Michael John Callanan, 42
Michael John Callanan, 42, died Friday, July 31, 2009, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Mr. Callanan was a native of Boston, MA, and had lived in Glennville for many years.
Michael joined the National Guard in October, 1986, and attended Construction Equipment repair school at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, where he served until 1990. In 1990 he enlisted in the active Army and attended helicopter repair school at Ft. Eustis, VA. From there, he was assigned to the 3rd Bn - 160th. He attended various schools available for helicopter crewman. He served in the Middle East on three occasions during the first Iraq War in Panama and Honduras. He received an Army Commendation Medal, three Army Achievement Medals, The National Defense Ribbon, The Kuwait Liberation Unit Citation and various other honors. He was honorably discharged as a SSG (E - 6) in March of 1996.
While serving at HAAF, he met and later married
Christi Gutierrez of Glennville. After completing his service, he pursued a career in direct mail services and transformed a garage - operated business into an extremely successful enterprise, employing several people. In 2006 he was recognized by the Savannah Business Report as a member of their prestigious “40 under 40” group of successful businessmen. Far more important to him though, was the success he and Christi shared at home with their four children; Taylor, Chandler, Spencer and Aniston. Friends and family alike will miss him greatly.
He is survived by his wife, Christi Gutierrez Callanan of Glennville; children, Taylor, Chandler, Spencer and Aniston; mother and step - father, Marie L. Geary and Kevin M. Geary of Glennville; sisters, Elizabeth Marie Callanan of Taunton, MA, and Deborah Marie O’Brien of Hanson, MA; brother, Scott David Callanan of Boynton Beach, FL; three nieces, four nephews and numerous brothers - in - law and sisters - in - law.
Funeral services were held Monday, August 3, 2009, from the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home with Dr. Jack Snellgrove officiating. Burial followed in the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Scott Callanan, Rob O’Brien, Christy Tarantino, Walter Dumphy, Chase Shuman and Gentry O’Neal.

Charles Lewis Coleman, 76
Charles Lewis Coleman, of Cobbtown, GA, passed away Thursday, July 30, 2009. He was born to the late Clifford and Edna Moxley Coleman, September 21, 1932. He held degrees from Berry College and the University of North Carolina. He also earned various fellowships and attended Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies, Cornell University, Georgia Southern College and the University of Georgia throughout his career.
He was a life - long member of the Cobbtown United Methodist Church where he served in various positions. He was an active member of the Cobbtown Lions Club and the Gideons.
He began his career in education at Collins High School in 1953. He later taught at Metter High School, Swainsboro High School, the Academy of Career Sciences in Swainsboro, and Emanuel County Institute and Southeastern Technical School. He also held positions including Lecturer with the Public Affairs Office at John F. Kennedy Space Center, Director of First District Cooperative Educational Services Agency, Science Department Head of the Governors Honor Program, and Director of Emanuel County Communities in School. One of his greatest pleasures was gained from being the owner of his family farm in Cobbtown.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Carol Elaine Coleman.
He is survived by his wife, Shelby Whitworth Coleman; sister, Martha Coleman Martin (Harry); daughter Brenda Burkhalter (Joe), Diane Rogers and Cathy Barlow (Tommy), all of Cobbtown; eight grandchildren and five great - grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Cobbtown United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 1, 2009, at Cobbtown United Methodist Church, with burial following in the Sunlight cemetery in Cobbtown.
