Mildred Tucker Osborne, 84
Mildred Tucker Osborne, 84, died Tuesday, December 8, 2009, at Candler County Hospital. The Bulloch County native had lived in Metter most of her life. She retired from Metter Banking Company after many years as a bank teller and was a member of the Metter Primitive Baptist Church. Mildred and Roy loved traveling in their camper. She was a loving wife, mother and sister. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Osborne and a son, Harry Osborne.
Survivors are a daughter and son - in - law, Donna and Kermit Powell of the Cedar Creek Community; a brother, Lehman Tucker Jr., of Metter; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, with burial following in the Lake Cemetery. Elder Tom Deal officiated. Pallbearers were Bubba Fields, Matt McGowan, Josh Tucker, Charlie Tucker, Jeff Hale and Rand Hendrix. The family requested that remembrances be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 201 Television Circle, Savannah, GA 31406.

Margaret “Maggie” L. Stanfield, 69
Margaret “Maggie” L. Stanfield, 69, died Tuesday, December 8, 2009, at Community Hospice Inpatient Facility. The Dade County, FL, native had lived in this area most of her life and was employed as a security officer with The Southern Company at Plant Hatch.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J. R. Stanfield and a grandson, Matthew Stanfield.
She is survived by her children, Janet and Michael Kicklighter, Billy and Faye Stanfield and Ronald and Sharon Stanfield, all of Reidsville; brothers, Donald Currie of Reidsville and Marvin Currie of Davenport, FL; eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, December 11, 2009, from the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home in Glennville, with Reverend Charles Hutcheson officiating. Burial followed in Glennville Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Justin Stanfield, Michael Howard, Bubba King, Brett Thompson, Charlie Iddins and John Paul LaGrone.

Susie Mae Padgett Brown, 91
Mrs. Susie Mae Padgett Brown, age 91, of Claxton, passed away Saturday, December 5, 2009, at her residence under the care of her family and Georgia Home Health Care Hospice. The Ft. Pierce native had lived in West Palm Beach, Fl, for many years prior to moving to Claxton four years ago, and she was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Mr. Elwood Brown of Claxton; daughter and son - in - law, Sheila and Larry Higgs of Claxton; sons and daughters - in - law, Kennon and Nancy Brown and Ronald and Lynn Padgett, all of West Palm Beach; brother and sister - in - law, Leroy and Marlene Padgett of Melbourne; eight grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, two great - great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. also survive.
The funeral service was conducted Tuesday, December 8, 2009, from the Glennville Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home with the Rev. David Hagan officiating. Interment followed in the Georgia Veterans Memorial cemetery in Glennville.

Joe E. Collins, 91
Mr. Joe E. Collins, age 91, of Vidalia, died Tuesday, December 1, 2009. He was a native of Collins, served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and retired after 34 years of service as a soil conservationist with the Department of Agriculture, working in Toombs, Liberty, Long, and Early Counties. While living in Liberty County, he was a member of the Liberty County Board of Education.
He returned to Collins in 1977 and served as a tax assessor in Tattnall County for seven years, prior to moving to Vidalia in 2003. He was a member of the Collins First Baptist Church and a watch care member of the Higgston Baptist Church.
Mr. Collins is survived by his wife, of 64 years, Ruth Collins of Vidalia; three sons, John P. Collins of Brisbane, Australia; Adrian P. Collins of Vidalia; and Mark E. Collins of Alexandria, VA; ten grandchildren; and nine great - grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 5, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home, with Reverend Mark Jones and Reverend Steve Kimbrell officiating. Interment will follow in the Collins First Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, December 4, 2009, from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.

Vernell Cooper, 81
Vernell Cooper, 81, departed this life on Friday, December 4, 2009, at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Freddie and Oretha Cooper. She was born in Long County on December 3, 1928. She joined First African Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend E.J. Junior. She was employed for a number of years at Sutton Place.
She was the mother of two children; one preceded her in death, Raymond Cooper. She will be greatly missed by a devoted son, Fred E. Cooper of Glennville; two daughters - in - law, Marie Cooper of Savannah and Barbara Cooper of Glennville; grandchildren, Doris Cooper, Vanessa (Eric) Parsons, Dana Cooper, Don Paul Cooper, Diego Cooper, Terris Davis, Kimberly Cooper, David Thomas and Felicia Rogers; 14 great grandchildren; three great - great grandchildren; two special cousins, Pauline Williams and Ollie Mae Ferrell and a host of nieces and nephews, other cousins and friends. One sister, Lola Mae Robinson, also preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 9, 2009, at Glennville First A.B. Church, with burial following in the Glennville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ervin Roberts, Dale Thomas Sr., Ananias Thomas Jr., Jimmy A. Ford, Timothy Rivers and James I. Roberts.

James Herbert Cowart, 81
James Herbert Cowart, 81, died Monday, December 7, 2009. The Tattnall County native had lived in this area all of his life and was a farmer and member of Pine Grove Baptist Church in Reidsville and in recent years attended Hopewell United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Jenny Cowart; brother, Ted Cowart; sisters and brothers in law, Ernestine and Beverly Oliver and Louise and Burwyn Thurman and sister in law, Jewel Cowart.
He is survived by his brothers and sisters - in - law, Harris Cowart of Savannah, Enoch and Polly Cowart of Reidsville and E.B. and Jane Cowart of Glennville; sister and brother - in - law, Evalee and Joe Alston of Statesboro and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 10, 2009, at 11 a.m., from the chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home, with Reverend Vance Riggins officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Bruce Oliver, Neal Oliver, Greg Oliver, Don Cowart, Mark Cowart and Eric Cowart.

Charles Hinton Drake, MD, 91
Charles Hinton Drake, MD, 91, died Thursday, December 3, 2009, in Savannah after a long illness. He was a native of Tattnall County, Georgia, born August 29, 1918, the eldest child of Claude Hinton Drake and Alice Gordon Murray. He attended Indiana Central College before enlisting in the United States Air Force in March 1941. In the service he was initially trained as a bombardier and later as a combat intelligence officer. He served in the 391st Bomb Group of the 9th Air Force and saw action in England, France, Holland, Belgium and Germany, rising to the rank of major by the time he left service in 1945. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Croix de Guerre with Silver Star.
Following the war, on September 25, 1946, he married
Estelle Carolyn Nail, also of Tattnall County. He attended Emory University and the Medical College of Georgia, receiving his MD degree in 1951.
After an internship at Georgia Baptist Hospital in Atlanta, he moved to Glennville in 1952 to begin his medical practice. He was one of the last old - fashioned country doctors and was loved by the many patients he cared for during this thirty years of practice. He was a committed Christian and had a deep and abiding faith in God. Although he was not an ordained minister, he considered all that he did a form of service to his Lord.
In 1968, he became the first medical director of Glenvue Nursing Home, which he eventually purchased and owned for nearly 30 years before it was sold in 1997. In 1969, he helped found Pinewood Christian Academy, serving as one of its first directors.
In 1984, he was honored to receive a coat - of - arms from the College of Arms in London, granted under the authority of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. He was a member of the Order of Lafayette, a hereditary society of United States military officers who assisted in the liberation of France in World War II.
He was predeceased by one brother, James L. Drake.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Estelle; two children, Charles Edward Drake and Carol Louise Drake, both of Savannah; daughter in law, Rita Chabot Drake and grandchild, Vivienne Rita Drake; one brother, Dr. R.L. Drake of Gainesville, FL; four sisters, Mae Drake Lynn of Collins, GA, Joyce Drake Rivers of Collins and Margaret Drake Williamson of Eastman; two sisters in law, Betty Sikes Drake of Gainesville, FL, and Frankie Rich Drake of Commerce, GA; two brothers in law, J.H. Collins of Lyons and James Williamson of Eastman, plus many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, December 5, at Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home, with Elder Tom Sollosi officiating. Interment followed in the Glennville City Cemetery.

Margaret Stevens Duckworth, 78
Margaret Stevens Duckworth, 78, died Wednesday, December 2, 2009. The native of Emanuel County had lived most of her life in the Aline Community and attended Cool Spring Baptist Church. Mrs. Margaret was a homemaker, enjoyed cooking for her family, and loved her time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was predeceased by husband, Ed Duckworth; son, Randy Duckworth; step - son, J.E. Duckworth Jr. and sister, Ruth Roberts.
She is survived by her children: Carl (Colleen) Duckworth, Joyce (Curtis) Griffith, Sue (Joe Paul) Williams, Becky (Dale) Bennett, Earl (Nancy) Duckworth, Carol (Danny) Wynn, Lavonia (Kenneth) Carter, Virgil (Peggy) Duckworth, Betty (Taft) Minchew, Melvin Duckworth, Edith (Ted) Stewart; brothers, H.S. (Lois) Stevens, Tucker (Hazel) Stevens, Gene Stevens, and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, December 5 in the chapel. Burial followed in the Cool Spring Cemetery.

Herman L. Gay, 81
Mr. Herman L. Gay, age 81, passed away Thursday, December 3, 2009, at Memorial Health Medical University in Savannah. The Emanuel County native had lived in Reidsville most of his life. He was US Army veteran and was retired from Georgia Department of Transportation. Mr. Herman enjoyed fishing and was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by his wife, Opaline Holton Gay, and a daughter, Ann Gay.
He is survived by: his sons and daughters - in - law, Greg and Patsy Gay, Mike and Carolyn Gay all of Cedar Crossing; two sisters, Lucille Brown of Reidsville and Lilas Mae Powell of Lyons; a brother, JW and Miriam Gay of Reidsville; sisters - in - law, Joann Beshires and Melba Gay Brazell both of Reidsville; brother - in - law, Alvie Holston of Alston; two grandchildren, Brittany and Michael Gay both of Cedar Crossing; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 am Saturday, December 5, 2009, from the Reidsville Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home with the Reverends Thomas Shepherd and Paul Carlson officiating. Interment will follow in the Reidsville City Cemetery.
