Blanche Hunter Odom, 85

Mrs. Blanche Hunter Odom, age 85, of Evans, Ga., died on January 19, 2010, at the Doctor’s Hospital of Augusta, after a short illness. She was a native of Tattnall County, Collins, GA, and had lived for 35 years in Lyons and the past 13 years in Evans, GA. She was a homemaker, a wonderful cook, which was passed down from her mother, and had a great love and concern for her family. Mrs. Blanche was a past member of the Lyons First Baptist Church and then a member of the Abilene Baptist Church of Martinez. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Edgar Griffin, and her late husband, Cecil P. Odom; parents, Ellis Henry Hunter and Ada Walker Hunter; four brothers, Onus Hunter, Ranee Hunter, Lemuel Hunter, E.H. Hunter; and three sisters, Inez Tuttle, Nellie Carter, Genevie Morgan.
Survivors include one son, Henry Reginald Griffin of Pensacola, NC; one daughter, Vivian New of Evans, GA; two granddaughters, Jennifer Ollis of Marion, NC, LeAnn Shutes of Ashville, GA; one grandson, Danny Swain New Jr. of Evans, GA; one great grandson, Ty Ollis, of Marion, NC. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
Graveside services for Mrs. Blanch Hunter Odom will be held on Friday, January 22, 2010, at 2:30 p.m., from the Brewton cemetery in Hagan, GA.
Family will receive friends at the Jones - Stewart Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, January 21, 2010, from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.

Elizabeth Sumerford Purvis, 98

Elizabeth Sumerford Purvis died December 8, 2009, in Bowie, MD, at age 98 from complications of aging and non - Hodgkin’s lymphoma. She was born in Pembroke, GA, on March 20, 1911, to Daniel B. Sumerford and Julia Wisenbaker Sumerford. She grew up in Reidsville, where her father owned and operated Sumerford Drug Store. Elizabeth graduated from Georgia State College for Women with a degree in education and married Mattox L. Purvis from Mendes, GA, on July 4, 1934.
After moving to Atlanta, the family attended Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church. Elizabeth taught the seventh grade at Knollwood Elementary School for 17 years, receiving numerous outstanding teacher awards and honors. Following her husband’s death in 1962, she continued to raise the children and assisted them through college and medical school. After retirement, she volunteered for the Council on Aging (Meals on Wheels) and at DeKalb Memorial Hospital. In 1997, due to health issues, she moved to Dallas, TX, to be near her daughter. After enjoying three years in Dallas she followed Virginia to Maryland . During this period, she experienced several wonderful family reunions with the families of her brother Taylor Sumerford Sr. and sister Dorothy Thomas and her husband’s family members, Drs. John and Kate Martin, Dr. and Mrs. Edward Purvis, and Mrs. Fran (Purvis) Mauney.
She was preceded in death by her husband, brothers and sisters. Her three children, Mattox, Virginia, and Christopher graduated from Emory University School of Medicine and have pursued careers in medicine. She is also survived by six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Ever mindful of the importance of education and research, she donated her remains to the State of Maryland Anatomy Board for scientific study. Her life, her accomplishments, her commitment to excellence, hard work, and self - discipline made her an outstanding role model for family, colleagues, and friends.
Donations may be made in her name to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the American Cancer Society, or Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church in Atlanta, Georgia.

Charlie Sutton, 57

Mr. Charlie Sutton, age 57, passed away Sunday January 24, 2010, at his residence under the care of his family and Ogeechee Area Hospice. The Auburndale, FL, native had lived in Reidsville the past 25 years. He served several supervisor positions before returning to his farm and becoming a poultry farmer. He was a US Air Force veteran and was a member of Come As You Are Ministries.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Sutton of Reidsville; stepchildren, Darrin Myers and Trina Cope, both of Tennessee, and Troy Myers and Darla Smith, both of Reidsville; two sisters, Mary McIndoe and Connie DeRamus, both of Alabama; nieces and nephews, Janna and Scott McIndoe and Ashley and Jim DeRamus, all of Alabama; many grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Services were held at the funeral home on Wednesday, January 27, with the Reverend Tom Elliott officiating.
Memorials may be given to the Ogeechee Area Hospice, PO Box 531, Statesboro, GA 30459.

Sandra Nell Arnold, 66

Ms. Sandra Nell Arnold, age 66, passed away Thursday January 14, 2010, at the Tattnall Healthcare in Reidsville under the care of her family and Georgia Home Health Care Hospice. The Duval County native had lived in Reidsville most of her life. She was a farmer and was of the Baptist faith. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Cleo Crews Merritt; daughters, Lisa Mendoza and Janet Lee McGlashan; son, Lloyd Eugene McGlashan Jr.; sister, Lucille Hutcheson and brothers, James Merritt and Jessie Merritt.
She is survived by daughters, Shirley Arnold of Reidsville and Marie Arnold of Bloomingdale; sons and daughter - in - law, Ernest McGlashan, James and Vickie McGlashan and Bobby Arnold all of Cobbtown, and Gerrell Arnold of Reidsville; sisters, Christine Bland and Nadine Driggers both of Reidsville and Marie Pearson of Florida; brother, Roger Merritt of South Carolina; 20 grandchildren, two great - grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services were conducted Sunday from the Reidsville Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Artis Carswell officiating. Interment followed in the Mt. Moriah Methodist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Robert Scarborough, Travis Arnold, Josh McGlashan, Jason Taylor, Travis Arnold, Tracy Arnold, and RJ Arnold
Honorary Pallbearers were Andy and Cody McGlashan and Eric Tootle.

Lily B. Bland, 94

Lily B. Bland, age 94, of Baldwin, GA, died Monday, January 18, 2010, at the Habersham County Medical Center.
Mrs. Bland was born on August 9, 1915, in Newton County, GA, to the late John Jefferson and Bessie Moore Blake. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Barney W. Bland. Mrs. Bland was a member of the Pine View Baptist Church, Reidsville, GA, and was a homemaker.
Survivors include her stepson, Wellborn Bland, AL; her niece, Hazel Quinn, Cornelia, GA; and her great - niece: Jane Quinn, also of Cornelia She was the last member of her immediate family.
Graveside services were held on Tuesday, January 19, 2010, from the Pine View Baptist Church Cemetery, Reidsville, GA, with Rev. Jessie Browning officiating.

Carlos “Woody” Brown, 92

Mr. Carlos “Woody” Brown, age 92 of Claxton, passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro. The Glynn County native lived in West Palm Beach, FL, for many years before moving to Claxton four years ago. He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Mrs. Susie Mae Brown.
He is survived by his daughter and son - in - law, Sheila and Larry Higgs of Claxton; sons and daughters - in - law, Kennon and Nancy Brown, Ronald and Lynn Padgett all of West Palm Beach, FL; sister, Barbara Williams of Oklahoma; eight grandchildren, 16 great - grandchildren, two great - great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was conducted Tuesday, January 19, 2010, from the Glennville Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home with the Rev. David Hagan officiating. Interment followed in the Georgia Veterans Memorial cemetery in Glennville.
Pallbearers were Doug Higgs, Chad Brown, Joel Padgett, Shane Brown, Dan Bennett, and Brandon VanDeursen

Gerald Douglas Collins, 31

Gerald Douglas Collins, 31, passed away January 12, 2010. He was a former employee at McDonald Construction Company of Vidalia and also employed at Glenn Rice/ Tile Time.
He is survived by his mother and father, Jerry and Linda Purcell Collins; one brother, Jon Collins; and a sister, Karen (Grey) Collins; nieces and nephews, Sarah Collins, Lauren, Lannie and Covin Lynn; maternal grandparents, Janie Ruth Purcell. He was pre - deceased by his grandfather, Covin Purcell of Reidsville; and his paternal grandparents, Ellis and Sarah Collins of Hagan, GA;
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 16, 2010, at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in the Brewton Cemetery.
A Memorial Fund has been set up for Gerald D. Collins at the Claxton Bank, Claxton, Georgia.

Edna Smith Gardner, 78

Edna Smith Gardner, 78, passed away Thursday, January 14, 2010, at Azalealand Nursing Home after an extended illness. She was a homemaker, a loving mother and grandmother, and of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Ruth Smith; husband, Glenn L. Gardner and brother, Joe Smith.
She is survived by her son and daughter - in - law, Jimmy and Sherry Gardner of Savannah; granddaughters, Dr. Dallas Gardner (Corey Mitchell) of Woodstock and Dr. Jenna Gardner (Zac Morgan) of Pooler; sisters, Jency Ann Brannen of Glennville and Evelyn “Bo” Hook (George) of Aiken, SC; brother and sister - in - law W.C. “Buck” and Betty Sue Smith of Glennville; special nieces, Wanda Sue Allen (Billy) of Glennville and Bethany Smith of Statesboro and several other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday, January 17, 2010, at the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home with Reverend Edward Brannen officiating. Burial followed in Glennville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Mitchell Smith, Trevor Smith, Glenn Smith, Gray Brannen, Chase Brannen and Zach Allen.
Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home of Glennville was in charge of the arrangements.

Levi Stephen Lively, premature infant

Services for Levi Stephen Lively, premature infant of Amber and Lance Lively, were held Monday, January 18, 2010, at Evergreen Cemetery.
In addition to his parents, Levi was survived by his maternal grandparents Larry and Donna Bland, and maternal grandfather Steven Robinson; paternal grandparents, Harvey and Joyce Lively; paternal great grandmother, Betty C. Green; maternal great grandmother, Ella Jane Robinson; maternal great grandparents, Jr. and Marie Wilson; maternal great - great grandmother, Naomi Parker; aunts, Staci Robinson and April Smith; uncle, Kyle Lively, and other relatives.
Kennedy - Morgan - Brannen Funeral Home, Cobbtown –Metter, was in charge of the arrangements.

James Louis Barwick
Mr. James Louis Barwick, 92, of Adrian died Thursday, January 29.
Mr. Barwick was born in Emanuel County and was preceded in death by his parents, Lint and Veta Herrman Barwick, and his wife, Kate Thompson Barwick. During World War II he served as a Staff Sergeant in the US Army where he received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was a retired farmer and a member of Emanuel Church of the Nazarene, Adrian.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Barwick, Griffin, and Neil (Patrice) Barwick, Calhoun; daughter, Carol (Cliff) Miller, Evans; brother, Elliott Barwick, Adrian; three sisters, Nell Pearce, Tampa, Lucille Roberts, Macon, Betty Tison, Columbia, SC; seven grandchildren and two great - grandchildren.

Services will be held in the Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 31. Burial will be in Westview Cemetery, Soperton.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.
