Lizzie D. (Murphy) Alston, 47

Mrs. Lizzie D. (Murphy) Alston went on to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 30, 2009, at Cape Fear Valley Hospital at the age of 47. She was a devoted wife and mother. Although home was where her heart was, she was briefly employed by Kraft Foods and later by Fayetteville Christian School as a substitute teacher and cafeteria worker. She is a native of Tattnall County and a graduate of Glennville High School Class of 1980. She is the daughter of the late Larry and Dolly Mae Murphy of Glennville, GA. She was a member of the Outreach for Jesus Church in Hopeville, NC.
She is survived by her husband, Nathaniel; daughter, Jessica; and three sons: Derrick, Richard and Emmanuel; brothers, Michael and Ronald Murphy; sisters, Brenda L’Herrise and DeLoris Murphy; her mother - in - law, Mrs. Rosa Lee Alston of Glennville, and a host of in - laws, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Her love for God was expressed in every minute of her life. In spite of all circumstances, she would always say, “God is Faithful.”
A memorial service took place Tuesday, January 5, 2010, at Outreach for Jesus Church in Hopeville, N.C., with Pastor Dorothy Batts officiating.
A Homegoing Celebration will be held Saturday, January 9, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at Greater Zachariah Missionary Baptist Church in Glennville, with burial following in the church cemetery.
King and Son’s Funeral Home of Glennville, Ga. is in charge of arrangements. .

Paul Carutha Barnard, 72

Paul Carutha Barnard, 72, passed away January 5, 2010, at his residence in Jesup, GA.
The Evans County native resided in Jesup for the past 10 years. He was of Baptist faith and served two tours in the Vietnam War. He retired from the Georgia Department of Corrections after 14 years service.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Knight Barnard of Jesup; two sons, Paul Edward (Letha) Barnard of Jesup and Kenneth E. Barnard of Statesboro; two daughters, Betty Jean (Kenneth) Morgan of Reidsville and Penny (Greg) Davis of Reidsville; three sisters, Diane (Louie) Hightower of Reidsville, Sherrill Richardson of Claxton and Wanda (David) Morris of Claxton; eight grandchildren, two great - grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Friday, January 8, 11:00 a.m., at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Glennville, GA. Remembrances can be made to Hospice of choice or American Diabetes Association, 5105 Paulsen St., Savannah, GA, 31405.

Eli S. Burkholder, 83

Eli S. Burkholder, 83, born November 23, 1926, in Ephrata, PA, died Thursday, December 31, 2009, at the age of 83 years, one month and eight days. He was the son of the late Jacob H. and Emma (Sensenig) Burkholder. Eli was a member of the Little Mountain Mennonite Church in Fredericksburg, PA.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Edith Zimmerman Burkholder; son and daughter - in - law, David Z. and Lucille Burkholder of Benton, IL.; daughters and sons - in - law Rachel and Earl Heatwole of Metter, Ruth and Willis Mast of Myerstown, PA, Rhoda and Wilbur Sweigart of Richland, PA; 21 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren; brother, Elam Burkholder of Ephrata PA; sisters, Maggie Hurst of Quarryville, PA., Anna Burkholder of Ephrata, PA, and Mary Burkholder of Myerstown, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.
Services were held Sunday, January 3 at the Metter Mennonite Church and funeral services were held Wednesday at Centerville Mennonite Church with burial in the Martindale Mennonite Church cemetery in Lancaster County, PA.
Kennedy - Morgan - Brannen Funeral Home, Metter - Cobbtown, was in charge of the arrangements.

Thomas J. Durrence, 85

Thomas J. Durrence, passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, January 4, 2010, at the age of 85, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. At the time of his death, Mr. Durrence was under the kind and capable care of Odyssey Healthcare. Thank you, Odyssey, for making it possible for Tom to be cared for at home.
Mr. Durrence was a native of Tattnall County and served his country during World War II in the 8th Air Force. He was a graduate of the University of Miami, and was a retired structural engineer from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Tom participated in many Scottish organizations and was a proud supporter of Scottish cultural activities, including Grandfather Mountain and Savannah Scottish Games for many years. He very much enjoyed vacationing in the mountains of North Carolina. Some of his fondest memories were from those trips.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Martha Jo Durrence; son and daughter in law, Tom and Michelle Durrence; daughter, Julia Durrence; grandchildren, Katlyn Durrence and Michael Durrence, all of Savannah; brothers and sisters - in - law, Jesse and Lynette Durrence and Ruby Jo Durrence, all of Glennville, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 6, 2010, from the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home in Glennville with Reverend Steven Thornton officiating. Burial followed in Glennville City cemetery with Military Honors.
Pallbearers were John Cox, Jimmy Cox, Jack Cox, Jerry Cox, Bill Durrence and Jay Durrence.
Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home, Glennville Chapel, was in charge of the arrangements.

Hazel Smith Edenfield, 83

Hazel Smith Edenfield, 83, passed into eternal rest under the care of Hospice Monday, January 4, 2010, at her home. The native of Telfair County moved to Dodge County where she graduated from Chauncey High School in 1944. Hazel and her husband, J.R., owned and operated Edenfields’s grocery for many years. She enjoyed gardening, but her love was her church and family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Lizzie Evans Smith; sister, Christine Smith Morris, and brother, Thomas L. Smith.
Survivors include her husband of 63 years, J.R. Edenfield; sons, Johnny (Suzanne), Bill, Stanley (JoAnne), Richard (Stacy) Edenfield; grandchildren, Jason (Brandi) Edenfield, Justin Edenfield, Dawn (Tom) Weaver, Wendy (Jeff) Castille; great - grandchildren, Ethan Edenfield, Savannah, Shelby and Wynn Weaver and Joshua Castille; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 6, 2010, at Pine Grove Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mervin Sammons Warnock
Mrs. Mervin Sammons Warnock, 77 of Tarrytown, died Wednesday, November 17, 2010.
Mrs. Warnock was born in Treutlen County and was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Sallie Will Bridges Sammons; and her husband, Julian Warnock. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church, Soperton.
Survivors include a daughter, Brenda (Pete) Braddy, of Mt. Vernon; a son, Gregg (Sissy) Warnock, of Tarrytown; 2 sisters - in - law, Grace Dover, of Dublin and Monica Sammons, of Windsor, SC; 7 grandchildren, Sylvia (Reggie) Faulk, Sherry (Jason) Wynn, John (Tabitha) Braddy, Jackson Warnock, Hannah (Matt) Palma, Jacob Durden and Beth Benton; 8 great - grandchildren, Emma Faulk, Rye Faulk, Ethan Wynn, Maggie Wynn, Hannah Wynn, Jesse Wynn, Hunter Palma and Mattie Grace Palma; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 20 in the Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home with Ministers John Braddy and Scott Morrison officiating. Burial will be in Tarrytown Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and may be reached at the home of Gregg and Sissy Warnock, 3734 Bear Creek Road, Tarrytown.

Percy F. Harrell
Mr. Percy F. Harrell, age 91 of Swainsboro died Sunday morning, October 3, 2010.
Mr. Harrell was born in Treutlen County and was preceded in death by his parents, Robert L. and Dollie Belle Skinner Harrell, and grandson, David Bradford. He lived in Brunswick for 39 years before moving to Adrian in 1985.
Mr. Harrell was employed with Robins Air Force Base as an airplane mechanic and was the owner/operator of Arco Auto Parts, Brunswick. He was a member of the Georgia Automotive Wholesalers Association where he served as president from 1969 - 70. He was a member of the Glynn County Board of Commissioners from 1973 - 1976 where he served as Chairman.
A 33 degree mason for 50 years, he was a member of Ocean Lodge #214, Brunswick, and a member of the Alee Shrine Temple, Savannah. He was a member of Poplar Springs United Methodist Church, Adrian.
Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Dorothy Meeks Harrell; three daughters, Faye (Odell) Beasley, Adrian, Sandra (Bobby) Medders and Shirley (Jerry) Bradford, of Brunswick; five grandchildren, Julee Smith, Brad Bradford, Robert Medders, Carol Denis, Paul Medders; ten great - grandchildren and one great - great grandson.
Services were held in the Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home, Soperton, at 3 p.m. Tuesday, October 5, with the Rev. Tommy Veal and Paul Medders officiating. Burial was in Poplar Springs Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jerry P. Bradford, Brad Bradford, Robert Medders, Paul Medders, Michael Medders, Robby Medders, Gary Denis, Brian Smith, Julee Smith and Carol Denis.

Rebel Cleo Bowen
Mrs. Rebel Cleo Bowen, age 74, of East Dublin died early Saturday morning, October 16, 2010.
Mrs. Bowen was born in Griffin, GA, and was preceded in death by her parents, Marvin Lee and Cleo Tant Gaddy. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include six children, Alan “Skeeter” Grizzard of Rentz, Lynda Brown, Robbie Miller, Roy Miller and Steve Miller, all of East Dublin; Angela Horton of Eatonton; two sisters, Sylvia Dempsey of Fitzgerald, Shirley Smith of Bonaire, three brothers, Freddie Lee Gaddy of Tifton, J.C. Gaddy of Sylvester, and Bubba Sherrill of CA; nineteen grandchildren and twenty two great - grandchildren.
Services will be held in the Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 19 with Reverend Joey Diers officiating. Burial will be in Minter Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and may be contacted at the home of Linda and Dennis Brown, 902 Soperton, Ave., East Dublin.

Jacqueline “Jackie” Friend, 65

Mrs. Jacqueline “Jackie” Friend, age 65, passed away Wednesday December 30, 2009, at the Community Hospice House in Vidalia. The Jacksonville native had lived in Reidsville the past 27years. She was a homemaker and loved to take care of kids. She is preceded in death by her parents, Wallace and Lula Mae Martin; brothers, Wayne, Eugene, Ronald and Franklin Martin; grandson, Larry Webb.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Henry Friend, of Reidsville; three sons and daughters - in - law, Dwayne and Shirley Friend of Lyons, Jimmy and Tawnya Friend of Reidsville and Paul and Joan Friend of Salem, IN; four daughters and sons - in - law, Lynett and Jerry Turner of Brunswick, Susie and Larry Webb of Vidalia, Penny and Joe Stewart of Salem, IN, and Emily and Cesar Hernandez of Reidsville; three brothers, Earl Martin of Salem, IN, Bobby Martin of Helotes, TX, and JW Martin of Glennville; 23 grandchildren, five great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Pallbearers were Casey Collins, Ernie Collins, Ryan Smith, Braymon Murphy, Wayne Stewart and Joe Moore.
Funeral Services were held Sunday, January 3, 2010, from the Reidsville Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home with Pastor Wally Hill officiating.. Interment followed in the Pineview Baptist Church Cemetery.

Diana McIlwain, 61

Mrs. Diana McIlwain, age 61, passed away Tuesday December 29, 2009, at her residence. The Pennsylvania native had lived in Glennville for the past 20 years. She loved gardening, crafts and was a member of the Glennville United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Leon McIlwain of Glennville; sons, Joseph Borasky of New York, Scott Borasky and Andrew Borasky both of North Carolina, Joseph Gentile of Glennville;mother, Marie Beak of Florida; brothers, Ronald Raymond and Bruce Raymond both of California.
Funeral Services will be private.
Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home, Glennville Chapel is serving the McIlwain family.
