Mattie Lou Conley, 81

Mattie Lou Conley, 81, passed away January 28, 2008, at Evans Memorial Hospital. She was a native and life long resident of Evans County. She was a member of Hagan Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard H. Conley.
She is survived by five sons, Charles Conley of Orangeburg, S.C., Junior Conley of Hagan, Frankie Conley of Reidsville, Billy Conley of Glennville and Ellis Conley of Claxton; six daughters, Laverne Cannon of Baxley, Shirley Crosby of Walterboro, SC, Joyce Harrell of Glennville, Betty Sue Riggs of Statesboro, Kathy Cason of Glennville and Pansy Smith of Hagan; two brothers, Herman Cowart of Florida and Bennie Cowart of Texas; 24 grandchildren, 36 great - grandchildren and five great - great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 31, at 2:00 p.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Travis Cowart officiating.
Burial will follow at Brewton Cemetery. Pallbearers are Joey Smith, Levi Smith, Ronnie Cason, Kenny Cannon, Harry Conley and Cliff Conley.
Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home in Claxton is in charge of the arrangements.

Sadie Stubbs Durrence, 94

Sadie Stubbs Durrence, 94, passed away Saturday, January 26, 2008, at Glenvue Nursing Home. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville all of her life. She was employed with the Tattnall County School System and the Mascot Pecan Company for many years. She was a member of Loves Chapel Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Garney Durrence and children, Jewitte, Eldridge and Don Durrence and Monaree Holton.
She is survived by her son and daughter - in - law, Dyril and Rosie Durrence of Glennville; daughters and son - in - law, Maridean Salter of Glennville, Sue Nell and Ralph Keezer of Okeechobee, FL, and Willene Autry of Savannah; sisters, Jetti T. Howard and Montez Todd of Glennville, Nadine Anderson and Jean Deal both of Reidsville and Inez Hughes of Collins; brothers, Bill Stubbs of Collins, Herman T. Stubbs of Reidsville and Henry H. Stubbs of Niva, MO; 26 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren, 13 great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 28, 2008, at 11 a.m. the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home with Elder W.H. Durrence and Elder Jim Bowen officiating. Burial followed at Loves Chapel Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Dale Salter, Christopher Durrence, Palmer Durrence, William Autry, Randy Keezer and Joe Durrence.
Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home of Glennville was in charge of the arrangements.

Richard Edwards, 61

Mr. Richard Edwards, 61, entered into rest Tuesday morning, January 22, 2008.
Rich was a resident of the Tattnall - Evans County area for many years after moving here from Coastal North Carolina. Rich grew up in Washington, DC, and attended Assumption Catholic School where he was an altar boy. He then attended Gonzaga and Staunton Military School before attending East Carolina University on a football scholarship. At ECU, he joined Pi Kappa Phi, met his wife Tonya, and graduated with a degree in English.
Rich worked as a teacher, deputy sheriff, and volunteer firefighter at Sunset Beach. Rich left the education field to work in the sales and hydraulic business for the next thirty years before founding his own successful hydraulic company, The Hydraulic Division in Manassas, GA. The Hydraulic Division provides hydraulic solutions and parts for clients worldwide.
Rich is survived by his wife of 39 years, Tonya Lizabeth Gordon Edwards; two sons, Shaun Edwards of Manassas and wife Addie, Kelly Edwards of North Augusta, SC, and wife Mari; one daughter, Kimberly Cone of Key West, FL, and husband Christopher; a brother, Michael Edwards of Glendale, MD and wife Darlene; a brother - in - law, Jim Gordon of Fort Meyers, FL; two grandchildren, Erin Cone and Kristin Cone of Key West, FL; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial Services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 25, in the Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home with Rev. Marc Foster officiating.
Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home is serving the Edwards family.

Trianiah Fleming, 3

Little Miss Trianiah Fleming, 3, of Reidsville, passed into eternal rest, Monday, January 21, 2008.
She is survived by her mother, LaKisha Fleming; father Timothy Gardner; sisters, Asia Fleming and Chelese Cornish.
The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 26, 2008, at St. Phillips Baptist Church. Interment followed at Organdy Mills Cemetery.
Harper’s Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Ashley Rabon Sapp, 27

Ashley Rabon Sapp, 27, died Friday, January 25, 2008. He was born in Candler County, but lived in Tattnall County all of his life. He was a member of Rehoboth Missionary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Michael R. Sapp.
He is survived by his mother and step - father, Fonda and Al Jones of Statesboro; one brother, Neil Sapp of Claxton; his maternal grandparents, Harold and Jean Thompson of Claxton, and his paternal grandparents, Rabon and Patsy Sapp of Claxton; three step - sisters, Jessica Cowart of Canton, GA, Yvonne Jones and Sarah Jones, both of Statesboro; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 30 at 11 a.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home with Rev. David Hagan and Rev. Joe Eason officiating.
Burial followed at Anderson Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Adam Thompson, Paul Thompson, Colby Thompson, Devin Thompson, Alan Sikes and Ashley Stanfield.

George Edwin “Tetsie” Spikes, 79

Mr. George Edwin “Tetsie” Spikes, 79, passed away Sunday morning, January 27, 2008, at his home. He was a retired farmer and a life long resident of Tattnall County. He was a member of Elza Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family and friends. His wife, Christine, and his son, Eddie, preceded him in death.
He is survived by four sisters, Inez Crews of Reidsville, Cora Lee Garrett of Guyton, Jean Morgan of Savannah and Joan Howard of Swainsboro; two brothers, Charles Spikes of Reidsville and Terry Spikes of Lyons; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 30, 2008, at Elza Baptist Church with Reverend Ronald Warren and Reverend Kenneth Green officiating. Interment followed at the Reidsville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Kenneth Crews, Ricky Howard, Ronnie Spikes, Dennis Spikes, Greg Spikes and Christopher Spikes. Honorary pallbearers were Robert A. Baggett, Sr., David Harvey, Ray Harvey, Jimmy Howard, Cline Tootle, Ronald Warren, Quinton Rush, Bud Rowdin, Larry Wilkes, Duwane Moore and Sam Collins.
Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home of Reidsville is serving the Spikes family.

Betty Tootle, 63

Betty Tootle, 63, passed away Sunday morning, January 27, 2008, at Orlando Regional Medical Center. The Tattnall County native had lived in Orlando the past forty years. She was retired from AT&T as an operator. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and Trinity United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Lillie Cox Tootle and two sisters, Janice Shuman and Sue Tootle.
She is survived by five brothers and sisters - in - law, Jimmy and Anh Tootle of Merritt Island, FL, Theo and Coty Tootle of Jasper, GA, Carroll and Shirley Tootle of Commerce, GA, Ray and Cindy Tootle of Metter and Mark and Suzanne Tootle of Pooler; great aunt, Grace DeLoach of Glennville; aunt, Mary Tootle of Reidsville; and special cousin, Sharon Bland of Savannah.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 30, 2008, at Reidsville United Methodist Church with Reverend David Hudson, Reverend Marc Foster and Mr. Ronnie McCall officiating. Interment followed in the Reidsville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Craig Tootle, Glenn Tootle, Brian Tootle, Mike Tootle, Clay Tootle and Garrett Shuman. Honorary pallbearers were members of the graduating class of 1962.
Memorials may be given to the Friends of Old Shiloh Cemetery, c/o Winona Shuman, 463 Robert Tootle Rd., Reidsville, GA 30453.

Hugh M. McCall, 91

Hugh M. McCall, 91, of Tampa, passed away, Friday, January 18, 2008. The son of Stephen Marcus McCall and Holland Way McCall, Hugh was born in Reidsville, GA, served in WWII as Air Force Photo - Intelligence officer and enjoyed a 44 - year career at the Ferman Motor Car Co. He was a loving husband and father who put his family above all else.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 yrs., Esther Jessica McCall; his brother, Larry W. (Alice) McCall, of Odessa; his sister, Etta Lewis, of Tampa; his daughters, Donna Lee (Duane) Davis, of Ramsey, MN, and Janis (John) Ricci, of Clearwater; his son, S. Mark McCall, of Tampa; his grandchildren, Alissa (David) Arnaud, Erin J. McCall and Lon J. McCall (all of Tampa) and Zachary S. Davis of St. Cloud, MN; and three great - grandchildren.
Memorial service will be held at Marsicano Funeral Home from 5:30 - 7 pm, Tuesday, January 29.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to LifePath Hospice.

Tommie L. Parker, 95

Tommie L. Parker, 95, passed away Monday, January 21, 2008, at Glenvue Nursing Home. The Tattnall County native had lived in this area all of his life. He was employed in the timber and turpentine industry. He and his wife operated Beard’s Bluff Adamson’s Fish Camp for many years. He was a member of Pigott Branch Baptist Church and is preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Lee Parker.
He is survived by a sister, Alma Haggerty of Hinesville; nieces and nephews, Frank and Jackie Parker, Judy and Joe Anderson, Sheila and Layton Fraser, Linda and Dave Bjork, Mike Haggerty, Deloris Kingsley, Ernestine and Ellis Todd, David and Nell Allred, Ann Stephens, Dorothy Hook and Scott and Cathy Hook.
Graveside services were held at 2:00 p.m. at Pigott Branch Baptist Church cemetery with Reverend James O. Young officiating.
Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home, Glennville Chapel, was in charge of the arrangements.

Ruth Futch Porter, 83

Ruth Futch Porter, 83, died Thursday, January 17, 2008, at Ogeechee Hospice. She was born in Liberty County on May 5, 1924. She lived most of her life in Tattnall County. She owned and operated Ruth’s Beauty Salon for many years. She was a homemaker and a member of St. James AME Church, where she served as a Trustee, Sunday school teacher and Class Leader, but the choir was her passion. She was chief musician at St. James and a great song leader. She also played piano for a number of churches in surrounding Counties, including Greater Zachariah, Macedonia of Ludowici, and Bethel AMEC of Collins to name a few. She initiated monthly musical programs at St. James, which featured many groups and individual singers. She worked tirelessly for her Church and community. She could always be relied upon to go when no one else would. She was affectionately referred to as “old faithful” by her Christian friends over a large part of Southeast Georgia. The Waycross District of the AME Church honored her on September 15, 2007, for faithful service. She was also a member of Laurel Grove chapter #118 OES.
She is survived by three daughters, Versaline Williams of Chicago, IL, Classine Porter of Glennville and Colleen Clowers of Perry; one son, Narcellus Porter of Claxton; one stepdaughter, Dorothy Porter of Queens, NY; one daughter - in - law, Elizabeth Porter and one son - in - law, Bishop Ernest Clowers; forty - four grandchildren; forty - one great grandchildren; four great - great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
A special wake/memorial/musical program will be held on Friday, January 25, 2008, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at St. James AMEC. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 26, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at St. James AME. Burial will be in Glennville City Cemetery.
King and Sons Funeral Home of Glennville is in charge of the arrangements.
