Violet Mercy Phillips Kinsey, 75

Violet Mercy Phillips Kinsey, 75, died Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at Tattnall Healthcare. The Syracuse, NY, native lived in Texas before moving to this area five years ago. She worked as a nurse’s aid for many years and was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family and was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by her children, Jeanette and Peter Plodeck, Linda and Pete Luchina, William Kinsey, Robert Kinsey and Daniel and Gina Kinsey of Reidsville; sister, Evelyn Phillips of North Carolina; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services were private.
Remembrances may be made to Southern Care Hospice, 2311 E. First St., Vidalia, GA, 30474.

Lula Mae Kunney, 93

Lula Mae Kunney was born to the late John Kunney and Lula Lofton Kunney on January 31, 1915, in Baker County, Georgia. She was the youngest of six siblings. She passed away on Sunday, May 11, 2008.
She was educated in the public schools of Baker County. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Albany State College in Albany, Georgia.
She was employed with the Baker and Mitchell County School Systems for over 35 years. During her employment, she served as a Lunchroom Supervisor, Teacher, Principal and Adult Literacy Teacher. She was also employed as a Census Worker for the United States Census Bureau.
Her civic activities included serving as Secretary of the Independent Fraternal Union.
She received numerous awards in the field of education and was a member of several professional organizations.
She joined Mt. Enon Missionary Baptist Church in Elmodel, Georgia at an early age. She was a devoted member and served as church secretary for 50 plus years until her illness.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Norris Kunney, Richard Kunney, Arminder Kunney and Alice E. Harris.
Miss Kunney leaves to mourn, her son, John Sr. (Mattie) of Reidsville, GA; brother, Benjamin T. Kunney of Elmodel, GA; grandchildren, Wanda K. Mosley (Quinton) of Reidsville, GA, John Kunney Jr. of Alpharetta, GA, Christopher Kunney (Rossie) of Atlanta, GA; great - grandchildren, Jamie Murphy of Ellenwood, GA, Brian and Jordan Kunney of Atlanta, GA; great - great - grandchildren, Jaylin and Jaimee Murphy of Ellenwood, GA, and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 17, 2008, at New Salem Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Elmodel, GA, with Moderator Henry Hogan, Jr., officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Enon Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were John Kunney Jr., Christopher Kunney, Jamie Murphy, Brian Kunney, Benjamin Wright and Frank Wright. Honorary pallbearers were George L. Brown, Cornelius Key, James Rogers, Benjamin Wright, Fredrick Hall and Willie Brown.
Ward Funeral Home in Dawson, Georgia, was in charge of the arrangements.

Joseph William Roberts Sr., 76

Joseph William Roberts Sr., 76, a lifelong resident of Glennville and affectionately known as Buck, graciously and peacefully went home to be with our Lord on Friday, May 16, 2008.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Earvin and Eula (Frazier) Roberts.
He accepted Christ at an early age and worshipped at First African Baptist Church in Glennville, GA. He worked as a Pulpwood Truck Driver. Joseph was a devoted husband, a caring father and a loving grandfather and great grandfather. He will always be remembered for his unconditional love, dedicated friendship and unreserved caring spirit.
He is survived by his loving wife, Johnnie Lee (Tillman) Roberts. In addition to his wife of 50 plus years, he leaves behind his daughters and sons, Shirley E. Smith of Glennville, GA, Dorothy M. Hall of Atlanta, GA, Polly A. Gaskins (Jimmy) of Norfolk, VA, Paulette Coleman (Franklin) of Montgomery, AL, Johnnie M. Jordan of Glennville, GA, Joseph W. Roberts Jr. of Glennville, GA, Gladys Shelia Joyce of Reidsville, GA, Ernest Roberts (Sandra) of Hinesville, GA, Vinesta Roberts (Terry) of Glennville, GA, Michael N. Roberts (Denise) of Griffin, GA; a brother, Thomas Roberts and sister, Pauline Williams of Glennville, GA; 21 grandchildren and hosts of great - grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and a multitude of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 23, 2008, at 1:30 p.m. at First African Baptist Church in Glennville, GA, with pastor Rev. Clarence Bolton. Interment will follow in the Glennville City Cemetery.

Sarah W. “Billie” Shuman, 89

Sarah W. “Billie” Shuman, 89, passed away Thursday morning, May 15, 2008, at the Glenvue Nursing Home in Glennville.
Born January 21, 1919, in Hagan, Georgia, she was a very devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and Church worker.
Mrs. Shuman graduated from Claxton High School and shortly thereafter moved to Reidsville and married the late Jim Shuman Jr. They operated “Shuman Market” for 45 years and she was a key to the success of the business. She was known for her industrious work and her ability to care for her customer’s needs. Their market was known for its outstanding meat along with the quality service.
She joined the Reidsville United Methodist Church in the late 1930s and was a loyal member of the Tommy Thomson Sunday School Class. She sang in the choir, served on the Administrative Board, and was actively involved in several committees. She supported the church regularly until her health declined.
Late in life she became a resident of North Springs Assisted Living in Claxton, Georgia, where she and her many friends were very involved in the activities of the home. She was an avid reader and spent many hours in her room in that pursuit. She loved her time there and thought the staff was outstanding. Her time at Glenvue was short but was highlighted by great care and attention by the staff.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Shuman Jr.; her mother, Elizabeth Smith; her father, Alva Smith; and her brother, A.C. Smith. Also a long time friend and employee, Johnny C. “Red” Futch.
She is survived by two sons and daughters - in - law, Jimmy and Frances Shuman, Daniel and Eva Lou Shuman, brother, Joel Smith, grandson, Jim and Clarice Shuman, granddaughters, Donna Peyton, Gina and David Marshall, and Danette Gore. She also had eight great - grandchildren.
The funeral was held at the Reidsville United Methodist Church on Saturday May 17, 2008. Interment followed in the Reidsville City Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Bruce Oliver, Billy Eason, John Shuman, Mark Shuman, Jackie Trim, Johnny Shuman and John Kappas. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Tommy Thomson Sunday School Class. Memorials may be sent to the Reidsville United Methodist Church, New Property Fund, PO Box 218, Reidsville, Georgia 30453.
Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home served the Shuman Family.

Margie Thigpen, 50

Mrs. Margie Thigpen, age 50, died May 14, 2008, at her residence, under the care of Community Hospice, after a brief illness. She was a native of Florida but resided all of her life in the Toombs County area. She loved flowers and gardening and was a member of the Lyons Holiness church. She was preceded in death by her mother, Carol Ann Wells and her brother, Richard Otis Mosley.
She is survived by her husband, Marvin Thigpen of Lyons, one son, J.R. Thigpen of Lyons, her father, Otis Mosley of Cobbtown, three grandchildren, Login, Jordan and Hunter Thigpen, and their mother, Daniell Sharpe Thigpen, all of Lyons, three sisters and brothers - in - law, Peggy and Fletcher Hoyt of Avon Park, FL, Emma and Gary Prescott of Palmdale, FL, Corrine and Brian Belgarde of Avon Park, FL, aunts and uncles, Homer and Glenda Culpepper of Avon Park, FL, Gene Hall of Avon Park, FL, Lottis and Jr. Wilkerson of Swainsboro, GA, Elizabeth and Dennis Joyner of Vidalia, GA, Mary Emma Hutcheson of Soperton, GA, Ray and Dianne Mosley of Higgston, GA and Dan Mosley of Swainsboro, GA.
A memorial service was held on Friday, May 16, 2008, from the Lyons Holiness Church with Rev. Henry Dowd officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Community Hospice of Vidalia.

Nina Mae Braddy Wilson, 90

Mrs. Nina Mae Braddy Wilson age 90 of Vidalia died early Saturday morning May 17, 2008 at Meadows Regional Medical Center after a short illness. Mrs. Wilson was a native of Montgomery County living in the area most of her life and was employed with Oxford of Vidalia as a seamstress for over 25 years. She was a member of Vidalia Baptist Temple and her favorite pastimes included fishing, sewing, and gardening.
Mrs. Wilson is preceded in death by her husband Lehmon “Lee” Wilson.
Mrs. Wilson is survived by two sons and daughters - in - law John Paul Wilson and wife Jaunita of Vidalia, and Larry Wilson and wife Karen of Dietrich, Illinois, two daughters and sons - in - law Lona Stewart and husband Ralph of Reidsville, and Shelby W. Kramer and husband Billy of Lyons. Eleven grandchildren, several great, great - great grandchildren and nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Mrs. Nina Mae Braddy Wilson were held Monday May 19, 2008, from the chapel of Murchison Funeral Home with Reverend Paul Thompson officiating. Interment followed in the Pinecrest Cemetery.
Murchison Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Joe B. Harris, 78

Joe B. Harris, 78, died Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia. The Tattnall County native lived most of his life in Collins but had lived in the Reidsville area for the past 10 years. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the U.S. Marines and a graduate of the University of Georgia. For most of his career, he was owner and operator of Harris Grocery, a farmer and a former security guard at Thomas & Betts in Vidalia. Joe was a former Mayor and city councilman of Collins and a member of the Collins Baptist Church.
He is survived by a wife, Jane Tanner Harris of Reidsville; daughter and son - in - law, Sonia and Jeffrey Smith of Charleston, SC; two sons, David Harris of Collins and Dustin Harris of Statesboro; brother, Roy J. Harris, Jr. of Midway; sister, Emily Peterson of Statesboro; granddaughter, Tara Roberts of Charleston, SC; and the mother of his children, David and Sonia, Patricia B. Harris of Collins; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 15 at 11:00 a.m. at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, with Rev. Steve Kimbrell officiating. Burial will be in the Collins Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Ricky Strickland, Kinyard Jarriel, Jack Boyette, David Harvey, Roy J. Harris III and Van Harris.
Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements.

William E. “Bill” Tanner, 68

William E. “Bill” Tanner, 68, passed away Sunday, May 11, 2008, at his residence, under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. The Toombs County native had lived in the Glennville and Reidsville area most of his life. He was retired from Canoochee EMC and was a member of Reidsville Methodist Church where he was a former Sunday school teacher. He was preceded in death by his parents, George E. and Vera Tanner.
He is survived by his wife, Gracie Mae Tanner of Glennville; children, Jane E. Harris and Mary C. Tanner both of Reidsville and Melba Jean Martin of Lyons; sisters, Betty Tanner McNorrill of Akin, SC, and Phillis Tanner Helton of Merietta, GA; brother, George L. Tanner of Milledgeville; five grandchildren; three great - grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at 3:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home with Reverend Bill Eller and Reverend Robert Long officiating. Burial followed in the Glennville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Eddie Dasher, Jackie Dasher, Daniel Dreggors, Alex Rogers, Dustin Harris and Northern Anderson.

Julian B. Thomas, 74

Julian B. Thomas, 74, died Sunday, May 11, 2008, at The Griffin House in Claxton, GA. The Tattnall County native had lived in this area all of his life. He served in the Georgia National Guard, was a member of the Georgia Poultry Board and was a founding member of Glennville Hatchery. He also served as a Tattnall County Commissioner and was the owner/operator of Georgia Nuggets and Nature’s Choice. He was a member of Glennville First Baptist Church, serving on the Board of Deacons and as a Sunday school teacher.
He was preceded in death by his son, Danny Thomas; sister, JoAnn Thomas and parents, Rufus and Bertha Thomas.
He is survived by his wife, Jackie DeLoach Thomas of Glennville; daughter - in - law, Libba Thomas of Glennville; grandson, Drew Thomas and Brett Thomas, both of Glennville; great - grandson, Waylon Thomas, also of Glennville; sisters and brothers - in - law, Lyndal and Kennon Tatum, Wanda Lopez and Anita and Bob Kelley, all of Reidsville; brothers and sisters - in - law, Kerry and Mary Thomas of Albany and Ronnie Thomas of Charleston, SC, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at Glennville First Baptist Church, with Reverend Keith Rustin officiating. Burial followed in the Glennville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Kevin Tatum, David Brazel, Dr. Troy Rahn, Quinton Rush, Wayne Dasher and Johnny Murphy. Honorary pallbearers were Members of the Deacon Board of Glennville First Baptist Church and S. E. Smith, Micky Stubbs, Scott Cooper, Danny Lee Scott, Herman Lisbon, Artis Smith and Henry Lindsay.
Remembrances may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 321 West Barnard, Glennville, GA, 30427; Glenvue Nursing Home, 721 N. Main St., Glennville, GA, 30427; or The Griffin House (Alzheimer’s Unit), 107 W. Liberty Street, Claxton, GA, 30417.
