Iola Kennedy Briggs, 89

Iola Kennedy Briggs, 89, passed away, Friday, May 8, 2009, at Candler Hospital in Savannah. She was born October 31, 1919, in Long County Georgia to J. C. Kennedy, Sr. and Annie McCumbie Wilson and lived in Brunswick most of her life. She was retired after 52 years as a supervisor from Kings Sea Harvest in Brunswick and loved to work in her yard and take care of her flowers. She was a dedicated member of Calvary Baptist Church in Brunswick. She is preceded in death by brothers, L.K. Kennedy, Audie Kennedy, J.C. “Boe” Kennedy, Otis W. Kennedy and Willie R. “Kenner” Kennedy.
She is survived by a nephew, Mike Kennedy of Brunswick; nieces, Dale K. Whelchel of Sugar Hill, GA, and Debbie K. Guisinger of Canton, GA; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 11, 2009, at Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home with Dr. Rick Cason officiating. Burial followed in Glennville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Danny Terrell, Wayne Terrell, Andy Wilson, Jr., Mitch Kennedy, Mike Horne and Reginald Terrell.
Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home of Glennville was in charge of the arrangements.

Ben Gibbs, 66

Mr. Ben Gibbs, 66, died Sunday, May 10, 2009, at The Doctors Hospital of Tattnall in Reidsville after a long illness.
He was born in Toombs County, GA, and was a graduate of Toombs Central High School. He served in the United States Air Force and was a proud member of the local chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He attended South Georgia College and Georgia Southern University and worked for 19 years with the Department of Corrections beginning as a correctional officer and retiring in 1985 as a counselor.
He was instrumental in organizing the first chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation in Tattnall County, where he served as the first president. He also served on the Georgia Board of Directors of the National Wild Turkey Federation and judged numerous turkey calling contests across the state. Most recently, his greatest joy was watching his grandsons play baseball and his granddaughter compete in cheerleading competitions.
He was a member of the Reidsville United Methodist Church where he served on various committees. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and Papa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, J.A. and Ella Grace Gibbs and one brother, James Gibbs, all of Lyons.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 44 years, Beverly Sanders Gibbs of Reidsville; two daughters and sons - in - law, Gina and Jay Williams and Nicole and Robert Balkcom, all of Reidsville; four grandchildren, Alex and Olivia Williams, and Bradley and Nicholas Balkcom, all of Reidsville; three brothers, Bobby Gibbs, Sidney Gibbs, and Don Gibbs, all of Lyons; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Matt Gibbs, Andy Gibbs, Bob Gibbs, Steve Gibbs, Don Warren and Herb Brown.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday from the Reidsville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Marc Foster and Rev. Don Gibbs officiating. Interment followed in the Reidsville City Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to: Reidsville United Methodist Church, POB 218, Reidsville, GA 30453.

Ernest Clark (EC) Hackle, 83

Ernest Clark (EC) Hackle, 83, died Saturday, May 9, 2009, at his home in Metter. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the European Theater. He loved hunting, fishing and umpiring youth league baseball.
Survivors include his son Keith and daughter - in - law, Norma Jean Hackle; brothers, Alvie J, Jan and Ellie Hackle; sisters, Audrey Roberts, Delloroh Wickham, and Modrea Collins, and four grandchildren .
Funeral services were Monday, May 11, in the chapel. Burial followed in the Evergreen Cemetery.
Kennedy - Morgan - Brannen of Metter - Cobbtown is serving the Hackle family.

Shirley Ann Hopkins, 63

Shirley Ann Hopkins, 63, of Brunswick, passed away Friday, May 8, 2009, at Baptist Hospital in Jacksonville.
Funeral services were held at Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at the Chapman Funeral Chapel in Brunswick, GA, with Rev. Michael “Smiley” H. Smith officiating.
Pallbearers were John Blocker, Mark Hopkins, John Hopkins, Lee Hopkins Jr., Donnie Hattaway, and Wesley Lyone.
Interment will be Wednesday at the Rome Church cemetery in Collins.
A native of Tattnall County, Mrs. Hopkins had resided in Glynn County since 1996, was an office manager in sales and a member of the Southside Baptist Church and choir.
Survivors include her husband, Capt. Curnie Lee Hopkins Sr.; son, John Blocker of Reidsville; daughter, Linda Bess of Brunswick; step - children, Lee Hopkins Jr. and wife Ruby of Belhaven, N.C., and Belinda Grace Garner and husband Dick of Moxville, N.C.; eight grandchildren and one great - grandchild.
Chapman Funeral Chapel & Crematory was in charge of arrangements.

Michael Fred Morris, 39

Michael Fred Morris, 39, died Sunday, May 10, 2009. The Chatham County native had lived in the Claxton area most of his life. He previously worked for Savannah Communications as a radio installer and at Evans Memorial Hospital and Claxton Housing Authority in the maintenance department. He was also an avid Star Wars collector.
He is survived by his parents Linda Thompson Morris of Claxton and David Parker Morris Sr. of Claxton; step - grandfather, Henry Barrow of Claxton; sisters and brother, Cynthia Morris DeLoach and John of Claxton, Debra Morris Storch and Bill of Ponca city, OK, David Parker Morris Jr. and Melissa of Pembroke; nieces and nephews, Heidi DeLoach, Quinn Harris, Mikayla Crawford, Rihanna Morris and Lyddiha Morris; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at 11 a.m., at Smyrna Baptist Church with Reverend Edward Brannen officiating. Burial followed in Harmony United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Danny Anderson, Tom Hamlet, Keith Anderson, Tommy Pridgen, Ricky McGlashan and Jamie Thompson.

Randy B. Nail, 55

Randy B. Nail, age 55, passed away late Saturday night, May 9, 2009, at Hospice Savannah. The Reidsville native was a graduate of Reidsville High School Class of ‘72 and also graduated from Armstrong State University in Savannah. He had lived in Savannah most of his life and was a registered nurse, retiring from St. Joseph’s Hospital. He was preceded in death by his father, G. Cecil Nail.
He is survived by his mother, Sadie E. Nail of Reidsville; brother and sister - in - law, Attriss and Vickie Nail of Reidsville, and a niece, Natalie Nail of Vidalia.
Graveside funeral services were conducted Monday morning, May 11 from the Reidsville City Cemetery, with the Rev. Sterling Bargeron officiating.

Annette Pough, 52

Minister Annette Pough, 52, passed away, Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at The Doctors Hospital in Reidsville, Ga.
Minister Pough was born January 14, 1957, in Cincinnati, OH. She was the oldest child of the two children born to Pearlie Inez Ealey - Forrest. Later her brother Mark Forrest was added to the family through the union of Pearlie Inez and William P. Forrest on September 21, 1967. She graduated from Princeton High School in Cincinnati, OH in 1975. After high school she attended the University of Cincinnati and received her associate’s degree in Social Work and her bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice in 1981. In 1981 Annette was joined in holy matrimony to Freddie Pough of Collins. She moved from Cincinnati to Collins and became the mother of five children Crystal Leayasha, Freddie Jr., Karen Lafawn, Darien Deion, and Matthew Le Reece. She was employed as a counselor at Georgia State Prison and worked there for more than 25 years. After completing her studies in Christian Education she became a licensed minister under the leadership of the Church of God in Anderson, Indiana. She served as the Youth Minister at Collins Church of God and taught Sunday School on a regular basis. In her daily life Annette loved to praise and worship God. She was instrumental in working with the youth and led many people to Jesus Christ. However, the children’s ministry was her primary focus.
She is survived by her husband Freddie Pough Sr.; daughter Crystal Leayasha Pough and son Freddie Pough Jr. (Erika), both of Atlanta; twins Karen Lafawn Flowers (Joseph) of Atlanta and Darien Deion Pough (Yoshika) of Hinesville; and the youngest child Matthew LeReece Pough of Kuwait; her mother, Evangelist Pearlie Inez Ealey - Forrest of Collins; her father William Phillip Forrest of Cincinnati; one brother Rev. Mark Phillip Forrest (Kelly) of Atlanta; one sister, Lorretta Curry and brother Howard Lamont Curry, both of Cincinnati, OH; sisters Martha (Craig) Crawford and Jacqueline Lundey; four grandchildren Phillip Stokes and Freddie Pough III of Atlanta, Divine Rothschild and Kemar Bone, both of Chicago, IL; godmother, Geraldine Banks (Ron) of Cincinnati and godmother Mary Helen Goines of Atlanta; godson, William Thomas II (Tamika) of Atlanta, goddaughters Jada Lefawn Calhoun of Cincinnati, Heavenly Eunice Mincey and Daleysha Domanek Mincey of Jackson, FL. and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her sister, Phyllis Hill.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 11, 2009, at Mt. Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church in Collins. Burial followed in the Wilkerson Cemetery.

Ethel “Doll” Rogers, 100

Ethel “Doll” Rogers, 100, died Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at Glenvue Nursing Home. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville all of her life. A graduate of Georgia Teacher’s College, she taught school in the Tattnall School System for 44 years. She was a member of Glennville First Baptist Church and of the Retired Teacher’s Association. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alice and Uriah (Bud) Rogers; sisters, Mary Smith and Vera Miles; brothers, Eddy Rogers and Cliff Rogers.
She is survived by three nieces, Ashlea Rogers of Roswell, Patricia (Larry) Kennedy and Alice (Joe) McGovern of Glennville; two nephews, Buster (Jimmie Rae) Miles and Jimmy (Connie) Miles of Baxley; one sister - in - law, Martha Rogers of Glennville and special caregiver, Mae Brown.
Visitation will begin at 1 p.m., Thursday, May 14, 2009, at Glennville First Baptist Church with funeral services following at 2 p.m., with Elder Tom Sollosi officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery near Collins, GA.
Pallbearers will be Chad Kennedy, Alan Miles, Greg Oliver, Grady Miles, Mike Miles and Shane Brannen.
Remembrances may be made to Glennville First Baptist Church Building Fund, 321 W. Barnard St., Glennville, GA 30427.

Gregory Bacon, 50

Mr. Gregory Bacon, 50, of Reidsville, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2009, at the Tattnall Community Hospital in Reidsville. He was a native of Tattnall County, a graduate of Reidsville High School and a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church No. 1 in Tyson, GA.
He is survived by one daughter, Yaminah Bacon of Claxton, GA; four sons, Gregory Lashaun Bacon Sr. and Cornelius (Latonya) Bacon both of Lyons, Damonta’ Bacon of Claxton and Brandon Bacon of Reidsville; two grandchildren; father, Rudolph Bacon of Reidsville; three brothers, Rudolph Bacon Jr., of Carson, CA, Victor Bacon of Glennville, Emory Bacon of Greenville, SC; five sisters, Regina Grubbs of Glennville, Ann Jinks of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Glenda McRae of Reidsville, Linda Randolph of Murphysboro, TN, and Carol Bacon of Snellville, GA, and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 27, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church No. 1 in Tyson, GA, with burial in the Robert Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday at King and Son’s Funeral Home from 12:00 – 6:00 p.m. and the wake from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Nancy J. “Butchie” Harvey Haley, 63

Nancy J. “Butchie” Harvey Haley, age 63, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus on Sunday morning, June 21, 2009, at the Redmond Regional Medical Center in Rome. The Evans County native had lived in Reidsville for many years, prior to moving to Rome in 1990. She was a retired security officer from the Georgia Power Company. She was a member of the Pisgah Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her parents, James Levy and Myrl Harvey.
She is survived by her husband, Paul Haley Jr. of Rome; son, J.J. Allen of South Carolina; sister and brother - in - law, Vivian and Howard Wright of Lyons; brothers and sisters - in - law, Larry and Pat Harvey of Rome and Jerry and Faye Jo Harvey of Claxton; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were on Tuesday afternoon, June 23, 2009, from the Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Miller officiating.
Memorials may be given to: the American Cancer Society.
