Mary L. Sommers Brannen, 79

Mary L. Sommers Brannen, 79, died Wednesday, September 22, 2010, at Candler Hospital after a long illness. The Screven county native moved to Savannah at an early age and was a homemaker.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Louise Sommers; son, Dennis Brannen; and brother, Eugene Sommers.
Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Charles J. Brannen of Savannah; daughter and son - in - law, Nancy and James Champion of Niwot, CO; son and daughter - in - law, Ronnie and Linda Brannen of Middletown, DE; grandchildren, William Champion of Denver, and Daniel Champion of Tucson, AZ, Jessica Brannen and Monica Brannen of Middletown, DE; sisters and brothers - in - law, Joan and Lee Nelson of Taylors, SC, Myrtice and Melvin Johnson of Savannah; brothers and sisters - in - law, Jackie and Wynelle Sommers and Jimmy and Pam Sommers, all of Richmond Hill, and Richard and Jane Sommers of Savannah, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services were held Saturday, September 25, 2010, in the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home with Elder David Summerford officiating. Burial followed in Beards Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery near Glennville.
Pallbearers were Gary Zettler, Randy Sommers, Shannon Johnson, Cory Sommers, Stephen Brannen, Grayson Sommers, William Champion, and Daniel Champion.
Remembrances may be made to Beards Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery Fund, c/o Mike Lamb, 3516 John M. Brewton Rd., Glennville, GA 30427.

Travis Robert Carver, 31

Travis Robert Carver, 31, passed away Thursday, September 23, 2010, at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah. The Tattnall County native had lived in this area most of his life. He was employed at Food Lion, a caregiver, loved to play the guitar and was an avid Georgia Bulldog fan. He is preceded in death by an uncle, Gary Parker.
Survivors include his mother, Gloria Johnson of Ludowici; father, Randy Carver of Albuquerque, NM; sisters and brothers - in - law, Eva Beckham and Yamill Llanes of Hinesville, and Reina Carver and Ana Carver, both of Albuquerque, NM; maternal grandmother, Betty Parker of Glennville; paternal grandmother, Liz Dickerson of Louisiana; paternal grandfather, Bill Carver (Jan) of Poplarville, MS, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services were conducted from the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home with Rev. James M. Holland officiating. Burial followed in Pigot Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were George Mixon, Bill Stargel, Troy Moore, Jeremy Wiginton, David Gay, and Ashley Moore.

Linda Sue Stanfield Cathcart, 57

Linda Sue Stanfield Cathcart, age 57, passed away Monday, September 27, 2010, at the Doctor’s Hospital in Augusta. The Florida native had lived in Collins for the past 23 years. She was a homemaker and loved to read.
She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Cecil McMurtry of Collins; daughters, Paula Ricks and Sandra Cathcart, both of Collins; brothers, William Paul Stanfield of Collins and Eddie Dean Stanfield of Ludowici; sister, Sally Diaz of Collins; ten grandchildren, one great - grandson, and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 2, 2010, from Twin Oaks Baptist Church.
Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home, Reidsville Chapel is serving the Cathcart family.

Jimmie Lewis Cline, Jr., 68

Jimmie Lewis Cline, Jr., 68, died Thursday, September 23, 2010, at Community Hospice Center in Vidalia. The Kansas native had lived in this area most of his life. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and was retired from the Department of Corrections.
He is survived by his children, Buffy Jo Cline Rogers (Mitchell Rushing), Jimmie L. Cline, III, Ziera Catherine Cline (Randall Moody); sister, Marlene Janson; five grandchildren, Tracey Marie Rogers, Michael Joshua Gilliam, Katelyn Christine Weathers, Randall Tyler Moody and Megan Sierra Moody.
Graveside funeral services were held Monday, September 27, 2010, at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home, Glennville Chapel, was in charge of the arrangements.

Roscoe Lee Drake, DVM, 86

Roscoe Lee Drake, DVM, 86, of Gainesville, FL, died Friday, Sept. 24, 2010, at home, surrounded by family. He was born in Ohoopee, GA, to Claude and Alice Drake.
His early years were spent on the family farm and farming continued to be a lifelong interest. During WW II he was an engineer - gunner on the B - 24 Liberator. He was a member of the 449th “Flying Horsemen, ” based out of Italy, flying 51 consecutive missions. After the war he returned to enter veterinary school at Auburn University. He later transferred to the University of Georgia and was in the first class to graduate from Georgia’s veterinary college in 1950. He went on to practice in Georgia for approximately 12 years before moving to the Gainesville area. He retired after 30 years as the area veterinarian for the state of Florida, where he aided in the eradication of brucellosis and tuberculosis.
Roscoe was a member of North Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and served as a deacon. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved sharing stories of his and his family’s past, raising English bulldogs and being with his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Alice Drake and his brothers, Charlie and Leslie Drake.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty Sikes Drake; four children, Melinda and Rocky Chitty of Alachua, David and Sherry Drake of Midway, GA, Elizabeth and John Thomas of Alachua, and Roxanne and Reggie Tumlin of Melrose; four sisters, Mae Lynn and Joyce Rivers, both of Collins, Betty Collins of Lyons, and Margaret Williamson of Eastman; eigh grandchildren, and eight great - grandchildren.
A graveside committal service was held at the Collins City Cemetery, with Randy Sykora officiating. Pallbearers were Kenneth Sikes, Eddie Collins, Charles Drake, David Rivers, Joe Drake, Darrell Thomas and Benjamin Chitty. Remembrances may be made to Hospice of the Nature Coast in High Springs, FL.
Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, was in charge of the arrangements.

Ivey Wiley “Don” Harris, 78

Ivey Wiley “Don” Harris, 78, died on Saturday, September 25, at Community Hospice in Vidalia. He was a retired heavy equipment operator and an army veteran.
He is survived by his daughter, Sandra Jordan of Cobbtown; sons and daughter - in - law, Toby and Brenda Harris of Douglas and Tommy Harris of Cobbtown; four brothers and five sisters; six grandchildren; two great - grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were private. Remembrances may be made to Community Hospice House, P.O. Box 2277, Vidalia, GA 30475 or to The American Cancer Society, 515 Denmark St., Statesboro, GA, 30458.
Wood Funeral Home in Metter was in charge of the arrangements.

Barney Lee Murphy, 67

Mr. Barney Lee Murphy, 67, of Glennville, passed away Saturday, September 25, 2010, at the East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro. He was a native of Tattnall County and a 1962 graduate of Tattnall Industrial High School. He was a member of First African Baptist Church in Glennville.
He is survived by four daughters and two sons - in - law, Bonnie J. and Paul Smith, LaToya and Tyrone Davis both of Glennville, Shannon Harlie of Statesboro, and step - daughter Tawanna Murphy of Glennville; four sons, Bruce Murphy, Jeffery Murphy, Lee Murphy and David Bacon, all of Glennville; 16 grandchildren and two great - grandchildren; one sister and brother - in - law, Doris and Thomas Roberts, and one brother and sister - in - law, Johnny and Hattie Murphy both of Glennville; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 2, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. at the First African Baptist Church in Glennville, with burial in the Macedonia Baptist Church cemetery in Ludowici. No wake services. Visitation and viewing will be held, Friday, October 1, 2010, at the chapel of King and Son’s Funeral Home from 12:00 - 7:00.

James Winton Smith, Sr., 88

James Winton Smith, Sr. age 88 passed away Wednesday September 22, 2010, at Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro, following a brief illness. He was the retired owner/ operator of Tattnall Produce, Inc. Mr. Smith was a member of the Reidsville United Methodist Church and was a member of the Rising Sun Lodge #32 for the past 63 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ora Mae and Clarence Smith and a brother, Tietgen Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joyce Davis Smith of Reidsville; three daughters and a son - in - law, Brenda Smith of Atlanta, Linda S. and Keith Jerkins of Athens, Lisa Smith of Roanoke, VA; two sons and daughters - in - law, Rev. James W. Smith Jr. and Diane of Americus, and Stephen and Iris Smith of Reidsville; three grandchildren, Shanna S. Tanner (Dan) of Blackshear, James - Michael Smith of Charlotte, NC, and Stuart Jerkins of Athens; two great grandsons, Davis and Cole Tanner of Blackshear; sister, Alma S. Mitcham of Ludowici, brother, W. Louie Smith of Reidsville; three nieces, Lou Ann S. Brown, Dale S. Burch, and Marlene M. Zechman; three nephews, Louie Tietgen Smith, Louie Smith Jr. and L.G. Mitcham Jr., and several cousins.
Funeral services were conducted Friday from the Reidsville United Methodist Church with the Reverends Marc Foster and Michael Kennedy officiating. Interment followed in the Reidsville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Louie Tietgen Smith, Louie Smith Jr., L.G. Mitcham Jr., Wayne Martin, Bo Hearndon, Merle Anderson, Danny Jones and Aldrick Hill.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to: Ogeechee Area Hospice, 200 Donehoo Street, Statesboro, Ga. 30458; or Reidsville United Methodist Church, 123 Brazell St. Reidsville, GA 30453 or Marvin United Methodist Church, 1783 Ernest Webber Rd, Lyons, GA 30436.

Earl “DD” Cartmell Jr., 47

Earl “DD” Cartmell Jr., age 47, passed away Saturday, September 18, 2010 at his residence. The Kansas native had lived in this area for the past 15 years and loved to fish.
He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Carolyn Cartmell of Reidsville; stepchildren, Thomas and Janell Grubbs of Rincon, Dawn and David Wheeler of Bloomingdale; parents, Earl Carmtell of Kansas and Virginia Hill of Missouri; brothers, Coy, Vincent and Roma Cartmell, all of Kansas; sister, Carmalita Cartmell of Arkansas; half - sisters, Rachel Cartmell and Jolene Keating both of Kansas; step siblings, Penny Dial, Nancy Testan, John Ryan, Rose Ryan, Vincent Ryan and Candy Silbaugh, all of Kansas; six grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 23, 2010, from the Reidsville Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home with the Reverends William and Linda Prince officiating. Interment will follow in the Wells cemetery in Liberty County.
Pallbearers will be John Herb Jr., William Testan, Kenny Testan, Greg Keck, Nathan Testan and David Sheldon.
Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home, Reidsville Chapel is serving the Cartmell family.
