William Hernandez, 80

William Hernandez, 80, passed away Thursday, June 24, 2010, at Carl Vinson Veterans Medical Center in Dublin. He was born in San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, and lived in Orlando, FL, for many years before moving to Glennville three years ago. He was retired from the U.S. Army as a Master Sergeant with 23 years of active service. He was a Korean and Vietnam War Veteran where he received many commendations and awards, to include a Purple Heart and a Silver Star. He was a Mason and a member of Caleb Butler Lodge F & A.M. in Ayer, MA.
He is survived by his wife, Josefina Hernandez of Glennville; daughters and son - in - law, Mayra and Edgar Rodriguez of Glennville, and Rosa A. Hernandez of San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico;; son and daughter - in - law, Jose G. and Yolanda Hernanez of Orlando, FL; sisters, Lydia Merced, Andrea Hernandez and Iris Cruz; brothers, Luis Hernandez and Jose A. Hernandez; seven grandchildren, three great - grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 28, 2010, at the Georgia Veterans Memorial cemetery with full Military Honors and Masonic Rites.

James Samuel King, 74

Mr. James Samuel King, 74, of Glennville, passed away Monday, June 21, 2010, at Evans Memorial Hospital in Claxton, Ga.
He attended the public schools in Tattnall County and moved to Miami for many years. Recently, he returned to Glennville, and was a resident at the Glenvue Nursing Home in Glennville.
He is survived by his wife Mrs. Sherry King of Glennville, and one daughter: Miracle King of Glennville; one brother and sister - in - law, Ruben and Novella King of Glennville; three sisters, Mrs. Pinkie Brown of Glennville, and Mrs. Bernice Collins and Mrs. Zadine Walker of Tulsa, OK; his mother - in - law, Mrs. Lillian Orphee of Miami; and three sisters - in - law, Desiree Allen, Kim Holland, and Tangela Hillary, all of Miami, FL; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 3, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at the Center of Life - Church of God, with burial in the Old Halltown cemetery in Glennville, Ga.
Viewing and visitation at the funeral home on Friday, July 2, 2010, from 12:00 - 6:00 p.m.
King and Son’s Funeral Home of Glennville is in charge of arrangements.

Annie White Melton, 87

Ms. Annie White Melton, age 87 passed away Sunday June 27, 2010, at Evans Memorial Hospital in Claxton. The Greenwood, SC native had lived in Fellsmere, FL, for 30 years, and in Sebastian, Fl. for18 years before moving to Collins in 1997. While in Fellsmere she was a charter member of Fellsmere First Baptist Church. Once moved to Collins, she attended Pine Grove Baptist Church and Rehoboth Baptist Church. She loved to crochet and once owned a bee apiary with her husband Lehmand. She is preceded in death by her husbands, Lehmand White and Frank Melton; sons, John Thomas, William Irven, and Michael Lehman White.
She is survived by her daughter and son - in - law, Annette and Ed White Lanier of Collins; sons and daughter - in - law, Arol Eugene White of Collins, James Gerald and Theresa White of Hudson, NC, and Steven Anthony White of Savannah; brother, Melvin Box of Taylor, SC; sisters, Fannie Mae Johnston of Charleston, SC, and Bertha Usher of Orlando, FL;16 grandchildren, 19 great - grandchildren, three great - great - grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Tuesday afternoon from the Reidsville Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home with the Rev. David Hagan officiating. Interment will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Thursday from the Sebastian City cemetery in Sebastian, FL.
Memorials may be given to the Rehoboth Baptist Church Building Fund, 2332 Campground Rd, Claxton, GA 30417.

Juanita Dent Purcell, 92

Juanita Dent Purcell, 92, died Friday, June 25, 2010, at Summerhill, a Senior Living Community in Perry, GA. Mrs. Purcell was born September 14, 1917, in Wayne County, GA, and married Wiley Nolan Purcell on October 25, 1937, in Tattnall County, where she and Nolan lived for the majority of their 63 years of marriage. Mrs. Purcell was a faithful, devoted, and loving wife and mother. She had a strong and loving faith in her Lord and Savior. For many years, both in Glennville and during their eight years in Doraville, she worked as a food service provider at the schools where Mr. Purcell was a teacher. She served in several capacities over the years at her beloved church, Ebenezer Free Will Baptist Church. During the short time the Purcell’s resided in Doraville, they were founding members of a Free Will Baptist Church in Atlanta. Her faith was an encouragement to all who knew her. Her husband, W. Nolan Purcell, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons and daughters - in - law, Dr. Dent W. and Ann Rushing Purcell of Rincon, and Douglas M. and Luann Lipscomb Purcell of Warner Robins; grandchildren, Edwin Purcell, Mieke Kramer, Mikki Thomas, all of Rincon, Dr. Matthew Purcell of Birmingham, AL, and Wiley Purcell of Athens, and 11 great - grandchildren.
Funeral services were held from the Brannen - Kennedy Chapel with Dr. Rick Cason officiating, and burial followed in Ebenezer Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.

John Curtis (J.C.) Smith, 82

Mr. John Curtis (J.C.) Smith, 82, of Glennville, passed away Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at the Glenvue Nursing Home
John Curtis Smith was born in Wayne County, to the late Paul and Sally Smith on February 12, of the year 1928. Promised three score and ten and blessed with 12 more, his journey was complete as the father called him home, June 22, 2010. He blissfully spent 62 of those years with the love of his life, Ida Mae Roberson Smith, raising 14 children. Blessings overflowed as he lived to see his children grown, most of his grandchildren grown and to welcome the third generation of his legacy. His memory, his teaching, and his love will last forever.
His life has been anointed since that day, as he was working alone in the woods, and the Father’s voice spoke to his soul. In 1962, under the guidance of Elder and Mother Aaron Wilcox, he accepted Christ into his heart and became a member of the Church of Christ. He preached the word of gospel in the White Pines and Sand Hill Communities, fulfilling his mission in life to save souls. There were times that the congregation consisted of just his wife and children. To please the king, he preached to glorify him and could shake the rafters. His final days were spent encouraging and uplifting his wife and family. He said that he was “packed and ready to go and waiting on the Lord.”
He has seen some of this country’s worst times and was blessed to see some of its greatest. He was educated in the Tattnall County School System and as a young man he honorably served his country in the United States Navy. He taught his family the value of hard work and honest living by setting the example. He was employed in many fields to include turpentine and sap, farming, woodworking and working in the saw mills.
He was preceded in death by two sons: John Calvin Smith and Byron Colson Smith; his sisters, Rosa L. Middleton and Willie Mae Rhodes and his only brother, Nathan Smith, and daughter - in - law Betty Smith.
To cherish his memory and to continue his legacy he leaves his loving wife, Ida Mae Roberson Smith and 12 children: Larry Smith, Jesup, GA, Barry (Cathy) Smith, Homestead, FL, Thernell (Beverly) Smith, Statesboro, GA, Leon Smith, Glennville, GA, Jerry (Johnnie) Smith, Montgomery, AL, Joe (Antoinette) Smith, Jacksonville, FL, Laverne Jordan, Glennville, GA, Louvanda Harvey, Hinesville, GA, Gaynell (Alfred) Kimbro, Cincinnati, OH, Barbara Parrish, Glennville, GA, Terry(Tommie) Whitfield, Blackshear, GA, and Angela (John) Tillman, Glennville, GA; a special daughter - in - law Aggalene Smith, Seattle, WA; sisters - in - law:, Sarah (Jeff) Jefferson, Fayetteville, NC, Beatrice (Charles – deceased) Smith, Glennville, GA, brothers - in - law, Eugene Roberson, Trenton, NJ, Johnny (Mary) Roberson Jr., Hartesville, SC, Gaston Roberson, Orangeburg, SC, Rufus Roberson, Glennville, GA, and Leroy Roberson, Trenton, NJ. He is loved and will be remembered by a host of grandchildren, great - grand - children and a tremendous extended family.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at First African Baptist Church in Glennville, Ga. with burial in the Sandhill cemetery with military honors.

James Kenneth Youngblood, 68

James Kenneth Youngblood, 68, passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at his home. The Montgomery County native had lived in Reidsville most of his life. He was a 1959 graduate of Montgomery County High School. He attended South Georgia College, transferring to Georgia Southern College where he obtained his degree in Criminal Justice in 1974. He was a Mason and a member of the Peace Officers Association of Georgia.
He retired from the Georgia State Patrol and the Tattnall County Sheriff’s Department with 34 years of service. He attended Pineview Baptist Church. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren and their teammates participate in football, baseball and cheerleading at Pinewood Christian Academy.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Kay Dunham Youngblood of Reidsville; daughters and sons - in - law, Kim and Ken Tatum and Krystal and Ricky Trull, all of Reidsville; five grandchildren, Kay - Lyn Tatum and Kameron Trent Tatum, Tyler Kenneth Trull, Spencer Lane and Kenzie Kay Hinson; sister and brother in law, LaVerne and Albert Darley of Lyons; special nieces and nephews, Stevie and Brooke Youngblood Hinson and Shannon and, Tina Dunham and Taylor and Allison Dunham and several other nieces, nephews and cousins. Special friends, Bobby and Glenda McDaniel also survive.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 25, 2010, at 11 a.m., at Pineview Baptist Church, with Dr. O.H. “Tab” Smith, Reverend Greg Usry, Reverend Steve Miller and Elder Tom Sollosi officiating. Eugogies given by Martin Moses, Johnny Sikes and Kim Youngblood Tatum. Entombment followed in the Reidsville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Kyle Sapp, Buz Cromer, James Kennedy, Trent Sikes, Lane Miller, Brandon Oliver, Dently Crews, Neal Groover, Gordon Warnell, Matthew Wilkinson, Zac Kinsey and Garrett Blaxton. Honorary pallbearers were all retired and active law enforcement officers of the Georgia State Patrol and Tattnall County Sheriff’s Department.

Omie Lee King Mackey Burney, 99

Mrs. Omie Lee King Mackey Burney, 99 years old, of Glennwood, GA, passed away at the Glennwood Hospital on Tuesday, June 10, 2010. She was a native of Wheeler County and a member of Starlight Baptist Church in Glennwood.
Mrs. Omie Lee King (Mackey, Burney) was born in Glenwood, on April 12, 1911. She was one of seven children born to the union and parentage of the late Morris and Corrine Clark King. Omie was introduced to the Lord’s church and obeyed the gospel through Jesus Christ in baptism. Because of her deep rooted faith, others found their way to the gospel. She was a member of Starlight Baptist Church. She served at a point in her life as the President of the choir. In later years she served and became the Mother of Starlight Baptist Church.
Omie Lee King (Mackey) married the late Charlie B. Mackey on the third Sunday of January, the sixteenth day of 1927. Their union was blessed with the birth of seven children: Roy Lee Mackey, Charlie Mae Barnes, Leo Mackey (preceded her in death), Jewel Lee all of Glennwood, Sarah Cray of Cordele, GA, Mary Kathrine (preceded her in death), and Maxine (Norman) Dexter of Vienna, GA; 15 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, 25 great - great grandchildren, and 20 great - great - great grandchildren.
She also helped raise special nieces and nephews: Ruben King, Sam King and Pinkie Brown all of Glennville; Mrs. Bernice Collins and Mrs. Zadine Walker, both of Tulsa, OK, and George King and Racheal Surrency (deceased).
Omie Lee Mackey later married Rev. Burney who preceded her in death. Mother Omie spent her working career as a nurse’s assistant, home and hospital health care aide. She also worked as a seamstress in various factory plants in the surrounding counties. She was an avid cook, baker, seamstress, quilter, crocheter, florist, crafter and fashion designer. She was also famous for her cakes and pies.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 15, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at Starlight Baptist Church in Glennwood.
King Brother’s Funeral Home of Hazlehurst, and King and Son’s Funeral Home of Glennville, was in charge of arrangements.

James Earl Carter, 79

Mr. James Earl Carter, age 79 went to be with the Lord on Friday June 18, 2010 at 8:55 at his home in Baxley. He died from congestive heart failure. Mr. Carter was a retired electrical worker from the Local IBEW 130 in LA and a Master Mason at the Woodstock Park Lodge 313 in Jacksonville, FL. He served in the US Army from 1948 - 1951. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert N. and Elizabeth H. Carter.
He is was the father of Terri Price, James A. Carter, Peggy C. Trigo, Amy C. Edwards, John R. Carter and William F. Carter; brother of Willie and Jody Carter, Grace Peterson, Oudia Coleman, and Janette Thompson. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Tuesday, June 22, 2010, from the Jacksonville Memory Gardens, 111 Blanding BLVD, Orange Park, FL.

Keshia Denise Futch, 31, and Baby Boy Futch

Ms. Keshia Denise Futch and Baby Boy Futch passed away Monday, June 14, 2010, at the Doctors Hospital in Tattnall in Reidsville. She attended Tattnall County Public Schools. In her early years she was raised by Rosaline and Luther Campbell. In her later years she was raised by her aunt, Linda Futch. Keshia enjoyed living life. She will surely be missed.
She leaves to cherish her memories, a loving mother, Clara Mae Futch, and a devoted father, Roosevelt Johnson.
She also leaves six beloved children: Z’tyia Futch, Zyria Futch, Zalia Futch, Zamiya Futch, Kareem Nails, and Kelis Futch; grandmother, Mrs.Lula Mae Johnson of Glennville; brothers, Kenny Futch, Darien Johnson, Sharvelt Johnson, Roosevelt Tootle, Dana Ross, Charles Grant; sisters, Ann Marie Futch, Ruthie Phillips, Shirley Burton, Lisa Johnson, Ella Walker, Casma Ross, and Julie(Eddie) Swint; a special friend, Ronald Nails; and a host of nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at Little Rock Holiness Church in Glennville, with burial in the Eureka cemetery in Claxton, GA.
King and Son’s Funeral Home of Glennville is in charge of arrangements.

Diane Jones, 53

Mrs. Diane Jones, 53, of Glennville, passed away Tuesday, June 15, 2010, at the Community Hospice in Vidalia, Georgia.
She attended the public schools in Tattnall County.
She is survived by her husband, Otis Jones, of Glennville, GA; two sisters, Mary Ann McClain and Willeen Smith; four brothers: Nathaniel, Levi, Joseph and Jimmy Crawford; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a special friend Mr. Herculees Radford of Glennville.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 19, 2010, at the Center of Life - Church of God in Glennville, with burial in the Old Halltown Cemetery.
King and Son’s Funeral Home of Glennville, Georgia was in charge of arrangements.
