Hershel Rewis, 98

Hershel Rewis, 98, died Wednesday, March 17, 2010, at Evans Memorial Hospital. The native and lifelong resident of Tattnall County attended Hillside Church of God. Mr. Rewis was a retired farmer and enjoyed fishing and working in his garden.
Survivors include his daughters and sons - in - law, Rowena and Hugh Strickland of Bellville, Jewel and Tony Weathers of Collins, Gertrude and Hop Knight of Jesup, Eva Mae and Bob Matteson of Prosperity, SC; sons; W.H. (Dub) Rewis of Salt Lake Utah, Howard Rewis of Cobbtown; 17 grandchildren, 20 great - grandchildren and several great - great grandchildren.
Funeral services were Saturday at the Cobbtown Baptist Church with burial following in the Cedar Creek Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to Pearls of Life Hospice 215 Duval St., Claxton Ga. 30417.

Corrine L. Barrax, 70

Corrine L. Barrax was born in Evans County, GA, on August 25, 1939, to the late Jessie and Viola Smith. She made her transition on Sunday, March 7, 2010, in the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Center.
She joined the United House of Prayer for all people at an early age and was a faithful member until her work was done and God saw fit to call her home. She was a member of the Bailey Young Adult Ushers of Bellville beginning during the era of Bishop Grace; she served as a Mountain Maid on the first visit of Bishop McCollough to Bellville United House of Prayer; she sang in the Bailey Young Adult Choir.
She attended school in Evans County, GA, and after marrying and starting a family, returned to high school, became homecoming Queen in 1971 and graduated the same year. She worked as a midwife for Dr. Curtis Hanes and delivered numerous infants to include Steven R. Drinks, who she delivered and named. She was a mentor to many people, advisor to all ages and will be truly missed in Tattnall, Evans and Liberty Counties.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Darvin Smith of West Palm Beach, FL; her sister, Lillie Bell Mincey of Claxton, GA and brother - in - law, Curtis Mincey of Claxton, GA.
She leaves to cherish her memories four brothers, Freddie Lee Mincey of Orlando, FL, John Thomas Mincey Jr., of West Palm Beach, FL, Tomario J. Johnson of Germany and Jessie L. Johnson Jr., of Fort Gordon, GA; two daughters, JoAnn Mincey Johnson of Hinesville, GA and Georgia Ann Johnson of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; one son - in - law, Reginald (Jay) Johnson of Hinesville, GA; two daughters - in - law, Tonette Mincey of Orlando, FL and Renee Mincey of West Palm Beach, FL; one brother, Ben C. Smith of Claxton, GA; three sisters, Mae Etta Smith and Ruby Smith of Claxton, GA and Earlene Morris of Charlotte, NC; two sisters - in - law, Willease Mills of Claxton, GA and Mary (Peaches) Smith of West Palm Beach, FL; 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces and cousins and friends.
Moody’s Funeral Home of Claxton, Georgia, was in charge of the arrangements.

Elroy L. Day Jr., 68

Mr. Elroy L. Day Jr., 68, of Walthourville, GA, passed away Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah.
He was a graduate of Coleman High School in Greenville, MS, and a member of the Good Shepherd Missionary Baptist Church in Hinesville. Upon graduation he joined the military and served his country with pride and honor. He earned the Army of Occupation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Good Conduct Medal (5th Award), Expert Rifle - M16A1 Award. He worked many years as a Civil Service employee and he was employed with the Long County Board of Commissioners as a Recycle Site Manager until his death. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and he enjoyed his life to the fullest.
He leaves to cherish a loving and dedicated wife, Mrs. Claudette Day; seven children Antwane Day, Shonnetta Downer, Hinesville, Terrance Day Sr., Birmingham, AL, Derrick Tolbert, Jacksonville, FL, Tiffany Brown, Kessler AFB; Delando Watts, and Deborah Watts of Birmingham; a number of grandchildren, six brothers and sisters Cheryl Robinson, Houston, TX, Gerald Day, Washington, DC, Ricky Day, and Billy Brown, Atlanta, Jacqueline Mack, Chicago, IL, Olivia Carter, Greenville, MS; sister - in - law, Claretha Belcher, Atlanta; brother - in - law, Tyrone Sykes, Walthourville and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, March 17, 2010, at the Good Shepherd Missionary Baptist Church in Hinesville, Ga.
The internment will be held at the Georgia Veterans Memorial cemetery in Glennville.

Margaret Wilkes Enzor, 94

Ms. Margaret Wilkes Enzor, age 94, passed away Monday, March 15, 2010, at the Altus Hospice Center in Atlanta. The Tattnall County native had lived in Atlanta before moving back to Reidsville forty years ago. She was a homemaker and a member of the Reidsville Baptist Church. Ms. Enzor is preceded in death by her husband, Walt Enzor and a son, Walter Enzor.
She is survived by her daughter and son - in - law, Sarah E. and Charles H. Waters of Dunwoody; daughter - in - law, Virginia P. Enzor of Gainesville, GA; two grandchildren, Stacy E. (Anthony) Finelli and Walter P. “Wally”(Cindy) Enzor III all of Gainesville; four great grandchildren, Will, Jacob, Addison Enzor and Zoe Finelli, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be conducted 2:00p.m. Thursday, March 18, 2010, from the Reidsville Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home with the Reverends Sterling Bargeron and Steve Miller officiating. Interment will follow in the Reidsville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Eddie Anderson, Floyd James, Dean Miller, Buddy McCall, Neil Rogers, and Bobby Rowland.

Z.C. “Jimmy” Godwin, 66

Mr. Z.C. “Jimmy” Godwin age 66, passed away Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at his residence under the care of his family and Hospice of Savannah. The Duval County native had lived in Tattnall and Chatham Counties most of his life until moving to the Black Creek Community six years ago. He retired from the Department of Corrections, beginning his career at Georgia State Prison and ending it at Coastal State Prison serving as the Maintenance Engineer for a total of 34 years. He loved all sports and touring on his Harley with his many friends. He was a member of the Black Creek Golf Club and was a Masonic member of the Richard T. Turner Lodge 116. Mr. Godwin is preceded in death by his father, Cecil Thomas Godwin.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Carla C. Godwin of Black Creek; five daughters and sons - in - law, Melody (Robbie) Robinson, Angie (Noah) Pittman, all of Vidalia, Talia Herrin of Collins, Lola (Jose Penuelas) Marx of California, Linda (Phil) West of Pooler; his mother, Ms. Vera Poole Godwin of Glennville; two brothers, Kenneth E. Godwin of Jacksonville, FL., Tommy B. Godwin of Reidsville; ten grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.
Pallearers were Smith State Prison Honor Guard. Honorary pallbeareres were James Dixon, Jim Coulter, Jimmy Youmans, Blynn Smith, Billy Tompkins, and Bernie Smith.
Funeral Services were held Saturday, March 13, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. at the Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home with Rev. Efton Green and Rev. Michael Moore officiating. Burial followed in Watermelon Creek Baptist Church cemetery.

J.C. Harper, 77

Mr. J.C. Harper, age 77, of Lyons, died Saturday, March 13, 2010, in the Community Hospice in Vidalia after an extended illness. He was a native of Tattnall and grew up in Collins. He moved to Toombs County in 1966, and was a U.S. Army Veteran. He retired from the Georgia Department of Corrections in Reidsville, at Wal - Mart in Vidalia, was the former co - owner of the “Zip Oil” in Lyons, and was preceded in death by his wife, Jerri Bland Harper in 2006.
Mr. Harper is survived by one son and daughter - in - law, Tony and Janice Harper of Vidalia, three sisters and brothers - in - law, Mary Lou and Fred Boyette of Bloomingdale; Jessie and J.Z. McKinley Hess of Lyons; and Lula and Bill Sikes of Cobbtown, five grandchildren, Tony Allen Harper Jr., Shawn Michael Harper, Christy Leigh Peterson, Anita Williamson, and J. George Burkhalter, nine grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services were held Tuesday, March 16 in the Cedar Creek Baptist Church cemetery with Reverend Bill Vansant officiating.
Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Community Hospice, P. O. Box 2277, Vidalia, GA 30475.

Edythe Rhoden, 97

Mrs. Edythe Rhoden of Augusta, Georgia passed away at the age of 97.
Mrs. Rhoden was a native of Reidsville, the daughter of Rufus Jiles Rogers and Georgia Hines Rogers. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank H. Rhoden and two of her children, Annette Rhoden and Frank H. Rhoden Jr.
She is survived by one son, Joseph Michael Rhoden of Augusta.
Mrs. Rhoden received her AB degree from G.S.C.W., her Master’s Degree and Sixth Year Education Specialist Certificate from the University of Georgia. She retired in 1977 after 39 years of teaching in Reidsville, Port Wentworth, and Augusta. She was a member of Retired Teachers and Rho Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was an active member of Crestview Baptist Church and the Kennedy - Sunshine Class.
A memorial service was held Sunday March 14, 2010, at Crestview Baptist Church.
Memorials may be made in her honor to Crestview Baptist Church, 2632 Mike Padgett Highway, Augusta Georgia, 30906.

William Arthur “Bill” Waterman, 49

William Arthur “Bill” Waterman, age 49, passed away Tuesday March 9, 2010, during training exercises with the Department of Correction in Forsyth, GA. The Pennsylvania native had lived in Florida many years prior to moving to Reidsville three and half years ago. He was a US Marine veteran and was a correctional officer with the Georgia State Prison.
He is survived by his wife, Diane Waterman of Reidsville; sons, Ryan Waterman and Thomas Reynolds, both of Florida; daughters, Amy Waterman of Minnesota, Samantha Waterman and Brandy Reynolds, both of Florida, Alicia Erwin of Glennville and Dennise McCumbers of Reidsville; brothers, David Waterman and Robert Waterman, both of Florida; sisters, Diane McLeod and Sue Tuttle, both of Florida, four grandchildren, Kiara Lynn Chapman, Devon James Waterman, Anastasia Irvin, and Justin Sherrod, and several nieces and nephews..
Funeral Services were conducted Monday, March 15, from the Reidsville Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Home. Interment followed in the Georgia Veterans Memorial cemetery in Glennville with honors rendered by the GA. Department of Corrections Honor Team.

Margie Sapp Blocker, 81

Margie Sapp Blocker, 81, passed away March 4, 2010, at her home.
She was born and lived most of life in Evans County. Having attended Antioch Baptist Church, Smyrna Baptist Church and Rehoboth Baptist Church, she was presently a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She retired after many years of working with Ace Hardware. Her passion was loving her family and sharing her love of God with others.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Harold Kicklighter and Rex Blocker and sisters, Helen Mikell and Hilda Hackle.
She is survived by two sons and a daughter - in - law, Edwin Kicklighter of Albuquerque, NM, and Kerry and Shelley Kicklighter of Claxton; two daughters and sons - in - law, Elois and Andy Waters of Claxton and Carole and CharlesKennedy of Claxton; one brother and sister - in - law, Marvin Bobby, Jr. and Kaye Sapp of Cobbtown; two sisters and brothers - in - law, Jean and Harold Thompson of Manassas and Ruth and CB Waters of Bellville; nine grandchildren and four great - grandchildren; special caregivers, Jean Brannen, Ellen Russell and Dora Roundtree and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday, March 7, 2010, at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Marty Walker and Reverend David Hagan officiating. Burial followed in Canoochee Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Brian Mitchell, Brian Hodges, Avery Sapp, James Waters and A.L. Jones

Ben H. Callaway, 92

Mr. Ben H. Callaway, age 92, passed away Thursday March 4, 2010, at the East Georgia Regional Medical Center. The Tattnall County native had lived in Collins all of his life. He was a farmer who loved to fish and hunt. He was a deacon at New Anderson Primitive Baptist Church and is preceded in death by his wife of 70years, Lorena Jarriel Callaway and a son in law, Calvin Rushing.
He is survived by his sons and daughters - in - law, Larry and Peggy Callaway and Johnny and Dianne Callaway all of Collins; daughters and sons - in - law, Ann Rushing of Claxton, Judy and Larry Lanier of Statesboro and Linda and Bobby Thompson of Bloomingdale; nine grandchildren, 24 great - grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews also.
Pallbearers were Allen Jenkins, Benji Callaway, Bruce Duffield, Steve Duffield, A.J. Jenkins, and Kortney Hendrix.
Funeral Services were conducted Monday March 8, 2010, from the Reidsville Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home, with Elder Jack Anderson officiating. Interment followed in the Anderson Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

George Brinson (G.B.) Hodges, Jr., 87

George Brinson (G.B.) Hodges, Jr., born on January 7, 1923, passed away March 2, 2010, at age 87.
The Tattnall County native was a Deacon of Bay Branch Primitive Baptist Church. A kind and gentle man, he has been a friend to all who knew him.
“G.B.” retired after 25 years service as a Plant Industry Inspector for seed, feed, fertilizer and grain for the Department of Agriculture, for the State of Georgia. But, farming was his primary occupation throughout his lifetime. During WWII he worked for the Seaboard Railroad and in the early 1950s he and his wife, Jean, managed the Traveler’s Inn Restaurant next door to the G.B. Hodges Motel in Claxton, GA. His son and grandsons now own and operate his farm.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Powell Hodges, and his brother and sister - in - law, Holmes and Mary Ann Hodges.
Survivors include one son and daughter - in - law, Ricky and Beverly Hodges of Reidsville; one daughter and son - in - law, Johnnie and Nancy Crosby of Shellman Bluff, GA; one brother and sister - in - law, Carl Lee and Linda Collins of Claxton; three grandsons and grand - daughters - in - law, Rev. John and Jo Crosby of Guyton, GA., Gavin and Anna Hodges of Reidsville and Nathan and Lindsay Hodges of Reidsville; five great - grandchildren, Erin, Wesley and Jeffrey Crosby, and Kennedy and Caroline Hodges.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 5, at Bay Branch Primitive Baptist Church, with burial following at Bay Branch Church Cemetery.
